Bird show number 29 A BIRD society founded on the Mornington Peninsula 30 years ago is holding its annual bird sale and expo later this month. It will be the 28th annual show by Mornington Peninsula Avicultural Society. It is on Sunday 26 May at KCC Park (State Dog Centre), 655 Westernport Highway, Skye. Society president David Renshaw said the show would feature a wide range of avicultural products for expert and amateur bird fanciers with more than 100 Victorian and interstate breeders selling birds. “It’s the state’s premier bird sale and expo and one of the largest in Australia,” he said. “In the trade section we will have pheasants and waterfowl, aviaries, carry boxes, display cages, birdfood, vitamins and bird toys.” Mr Renshaw said the trade area opens to the public at 9.30am and bird sales start at 11. Birds on sale will include exotic types as well as Australian varieties such as parrots, finches, quails, doves, budgies and canaries. Bird specialists would provide advice and tips to people starting out. The society was founded in 1983 and is seen as one of the strongest and most active in the state. It meets in the New Peninsula Church lounge, 370 Craigie Rd, Mt Martha, on the third Monday each month at 8pm. Sign up to ‘like’ the police POLICE hope Frankston residents will “like” their new Facebook page and help them solve crimes. The force has rolled out the Eyewatch program in the Frankston area after trialling the project in Geelong, Hobsons Bay, Darebin, Yarra Ranges and Brimbank. Eyewatch enables police to list crimes and share information, including showing photographs of missing or wanted people. Acting Deputy Commissioner Stephen Fontana said Eyewatch, backed by Neighbourhood Watch, provided a way for social media to be used by the public to communicate directly with police. “Police can post photos of people
who may be able to assist with inquiries into investigations in the hope that members of the community will recognise them, and police can also analyse any intelligence collected on the page and take action,” Mr Fontana said. Transit Safety Police have been using an Eyewatch page on Facebook since February last year with information provided leading to the arrest of two offenders for criminal damage on the Frankston line in August 2012. Police and Emergency Services Minister Kim Wells said social media can help residents make their communities safer. “A number of crimes have been solved as a direct result of information gained from the public through Eye-

watch,” he said. Frankston police will also use its Eyewatch page on Facebook to state facts about alleged crimes. Rumours about crimes that have not occurred are often spread online via social media including Facebook, creating unnecessary fear in the community. Acting Senior Sergeant Danny Dobell used the Eyewatch page on 7 May to confirm “rumours of a possible abduction” in Langwarrin were false. The police air wing was helping ground crews searching for a missing person, who was eventually found. View the Eyewatch Frankston area page at www.facebook.com/eyewatch frankstonpsa Neil Walker
