Seminar aims to keep seniors safe on roads KEEPING older drivers safe and mobile is the aim of a free driving seminar at Mornington Community Theatre, 10.30am-12.30pm, Thursday 1 September. The seminar is open to all senior drivers, their families and friends. “Older people make an important contribution to the economic and social well-being of the community as owners, employees or customers of businesses, as volunteers, and through the support they provide to family and friends,” organiser Nancye-Joy Gardner said.
“They need to stay mobile to sustain this contribution and to maintain their own sense of independence and wellbeing. “It is important to keep older drivers driving safely for as many years as possible. To do so, it is important that they keep up-to-date with the latest information available.” The seminars will cover safe driving strategies, road rules, vehicle safety, health and mobility issues, driver assessments, using alternative transport, and planning for future mobility needs. They will offer advice
on council services and other helpful resources. At the end there will also be an opportunity to talk with a qualified occupational therapist. The seminars are run and funded by Roadsafe, TAC and RACV in partnership with Frankston Council and Mornington Peninsula Shire. All seniors’ groups are urged to make a booking. Free refreshments will be provided and no tests are involved. Bookings: Nancye-Joy Gardner, 0419 398 695 or 5986 4621, or email dialsuccessdirect1@bigpond.com

Jumpers get a helping hand MOOROODUC Saddle Club members are jumping for joy after receiving a grant of almost $3000 for new cross country jumps. And they were especially pleased to receive help in erecting them from Dromana Men’s Shed at the club in Bentons Rd. President Terry Keet said the grant from VicHealth meant the saddle club would be able to hold training days and provide a safe environment for members to practise cross country jumping. “We are a family club that operates on tight funds,” he
said. “Most years there is very little difference between money coming in and money going out, and anything outside our normal running coats must be come from fund raising. “So, the input of $2895 from VicHealth was very much welcomed.” The saddle club is holding a QuizzaMe! quiz night on Saturday 10 September. Silent auction items will be up for grabs and donations of items is welcomed. Tables are still available for the fun night. Tickets are $25 each. Book at moorooducsaddleclub.com.au

Hotting up at laundromat MT ELIZA and Mornington fire brigades rushed to extinguish a fire at a laundromat in Mt Eliza last week. The Mt Eliza pumper was first on the scene at 8.10am when crews found smoke billowing from the business and flames spurting from a dryer. Firefighters wore breathing apparatus to quickly extinguish the fire and make the building safe, Mt Eliza Fire Brigade 4th Lieutenant Mark Turnham said. “Using thermal imaging cameras and a gas detector, crews investigated
the premise and found all to be OK.” Lieutenant Turnham said a passerby had made a valiant attempt to put out the fire using a fire extinguisher. “This definitely assisted in the suppression of the fire,” he said. “Even though we appreciate the attempts made by this person, please ensure your health and safety is always the top priority as smoke can contain dangerous toxic gases. “It was a great effort by all involved.”
