Wax on: wax off MORNINGTON’S Civic Reserve Recreation Centre was transformed into a karate dojo last week for the Traditional Shotokan Karate National Championships. The annual championships are usually held on the Gold Coast, but this year they enjoyed a change of scenery on the Mornington Peninsula. Dojos from every state were represented by 200 competitors. Most brought family members for the week. Dojo heads from each state ran training sessions over the first three days, with the week’s highlight being a visit by the highest ranking member of the TSKF, Shihan Takahashi, who came from Japan for the event. Looking like a sea of white uniforms, the 200 competitors grappled and tumbled while vying for success in their bouts. Lower level belt competitions were held on Friday, followed by elimination events for black belts. Saturday’s individual and team competitions helped choose winners of the various disciplines, with dojo teams competing against one another as well as state teams before national champions were chosen. The flags might also relate to the presence of defibrillators, frequent callers, hints on accessing property, and patient medical information. Continued Page 7

A metropolitan newspaper last week reported that the list of paramedic danger zones had tripled in some suburbs in just five years, with paramedics routinely refusing to respond to calls for help without a police escort. The number of addresses regarded as unsafe or violent was said to have risen by almost 25 per cent across the state in the same time. The surge in trouble spots is reported to coincide with a rise in violence sur-
