Girl power: The team at Peninsula Strikers is giving the competition a run for their money.

The club finished the season last year mid field but has turned the tables on the competition to scoop three major winds this year. A MARITIME tragedy in Mornington in 1892 that horrified Victoria is now in print with the launch of journalist Paul Kennedy’s book Fifteen Young Men. Radio personality Virginia Trioli joined Kennedy in Mornington on 3 September to launch the book, which tells of the loss of members of the Mornington football team who died when their boat capsized in a squall off Mt Eliza while returning from Mordialloc. Michael Rowland was MC, while Mornington and District Historical Society president Diane White, spoke of the significance of the event in the history of the town. Janet Groves read from a letter written by the mother of team member, Charlie Allchin. Copies are available at Farrells book shop in Main St, Mornington, for $35.
