CRYSTALLIZATION Crystallization a chemical solid–liquid separation

technique, in which mass transfer of a solute from the liquid solution to a pure solid crystalline phase occurs. In chemical engineering crystallization occurs in a crystallizer. Crystallization is therefore related to precipitation, although the result is not amorphous or disordered, but a crystal.

INSPIRATION

Cave of the Crystals or Giant Crystal Cave is a cave connected to the Naica Mine 300 metres below the surface in Naica, Chihuahua, Mexico. The main chamber contains giant selenite crystals, some of the largest natural crystals ever found. These crystals remain tucked away in in these caves such as the crystaline forms displayed within this typeface

AGATE PATTERNS Agate is a cryptocrystalline variety of silica, chiefly chalcedony, characterised by its fineness of grain and brightness of color. Although agates may be found in various kinds of rock, they are classically associated with volcanic rocks and can be common in certain metamorphic rocks.

RELAX

Crystalized patterns have been shown to cause relaxation of the mind and unknowingly help the brain fall into a “Zen mode. Crystal symbols along with basic geomentric shapes are frequently used in designs and logos because of this.

TOP PRODUCERS On the left is an inforgraphic that displays the top 4 florite producing countries in the world. The colors of fluorite are very pictorial and pleasant for the eye. The fluorite mineral can combine many shades of various colors, but mostly purple with white, or purple with green, or sometimes, green, yellow or gray. Fluorite is occasionally also called fluorspar. Its name is derived from the Latin word “fluo which means to flow. The industrial use of fluorite is to decrease the viscosity of slags in the process of steel production and to help eliminate the impurities from the final product. It is also used for manufacturing a variety of different sorts of glasses and polymers.

7 LATTICE SYSTEMS Cubic or Isometric - not always cube shaped! You’ll also find octahedrons (eight faces) and dodecahedrons (10 faces). Tetragonal - similar to cubic crystals, but longer along one axis than the other, forming double pyramids and prisms. Orthorhombic - like tetragonal crystals except not square in cross section (when viewing the crystal on end), forming rhombic prisms or dipyramids (two pyramids stuck together). Hexagonal - six-sided prisms. When you look at the crystal on end, the cross section is a hexagon. Trigonal - possess a single 3-fold axis of rotation instead of the 6-fold axis of the hexagonal division. Triclinic - usually not symmetrical from one side to the other, which can lead to some fairly strange shapes. Monoclinic - like skewed tetragonal crystals, often forming prisms and double pyramids.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER

Hi I’m Morgan, I’ve spent the past two years attending Academy of Art majoring in graphic design. I enjoy working on deliverables involving print and packaging. I am truly inspired every day when I step onto the sidewalks of San Francisco. This city brings so many fresh ideas to mind, I love grasping new concepts and integrating them into my designs. I pursued this crystallization book because I have always found crystals breath taking.
