The following nine works by Stanley Royle come from a single owner, private collection. The landscape painter, Stanley Royle (1888-1961) was a key figure in early 20th century British and Canadian art. An award-winning art student with a long artistic career who exhibited internationally, including London, New York, Montreal and Paris, at the latter his paintings won both Gold and Silver medals. His work can be best described as British Post-Impression. Stanley Royle was an incredible draughtsman with a keen eye for colour which can easily be seen in this diverse collection of works. Many of his finest works were purchased for permanent public collections on both sides of the Atlantic. His most notable and perhaps best loved painting is 'The Goose Girl' (National Gallery of Ireland). Stanley Royle first exhibited his paintings at the Royal Academy in 1913 and continued to exhibit there until 1950. In the period from 1913 to 1931 Stanley Royle became an established artist and produced major works depicting the Derbyshire Moors and surrounding areas. In 1922 he received a very prestigious commission to produce four large scale views in oil of Sheffield and these four paintings were extensively reproduced and now on display in the Sheffield Galleries and Museum and one of which was recently included in the Tate Modern’s recent exhibition “A Picture of Britain”. The delightful watercolour Early Morning included in this sale is a view of the village of Calver in the Derbyshire Moors is a very good example of the work produced by Stanley Royle in this area. As with numerous other talented artists at the turn of the century he was compelled to emigrate, spending fourteen years in the Canadian Maritimes where he presided over the implementation of the first Bachelor of Fine Arts degree course to be offered by a Canadian University. During his stay in Canada he regularly painted coastal scenes including locations in Nova Scotia such as Peggy’s Cove and Prospect Cove, particularly fine examples of which are included in this sale. In 1939 Stanley Royle painted Morning Light, Moraine Lake and Evening Light, Moraine Lake which show the same scene depicted in the different light of early morning and late evening, a practice which he utilised on numerous occasions throughout his career. These paintings are now in the collections of the Owens Art Gallery and the Beaverbrook Art Gallery respectively. A completed study of Evening Light, Lake Moraine is included in this sale. In 1941 he was elected a full member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Fine Arts. In 1945 Stanley Royle painted Evening, Cape Tormentine, New Brunswick which is included in this sale, and returned permanently to reside in England shortly thereafter. After the Second World War he wrote informed art reviews for numerous journals, held significant roles with various art societies with whom he had exhibited over his career and even had an art society named after him, which still exists to this day. During the 1950’s Stanley Royle visited Ireland, Scotland, Cornwall and Brittany during which time he produced paintings of exceptional quality. This sale includes paintings of Ireland, Scotland and Brittany which he painted at this time including the charming Boats, Concarneau. We are appreciative to Mr Timothy Dixon for his assistance in the write-up and cataloguing of these works.

This scene is from the pursuit of the young couple by Finn. He knows that Diarmuid and Grainne are in the magic tree. But because the tree is magic he has to entice Diarmuid out. He does so by setting up a game of chess under the tree knowing that Diarmuid is a chess fanatic. Grainne is on the other side trying to stop her lover. Tir na nog It shows Oisin and his lasher travelling across the sea to Tir Na Nog, the Land of the Young. The Salmon of Knowledge, Fionn is acquiring the divine knowledge having eaten the salmon of wisdom.

Lot 156 (Comprised of 3 Paintings) Martin Finnin (b.1968) Ulster Cycle - Cuchulainn Versus Fiar Diad mixed media on canvas signed lower right (90 x 130 cm) (35.5 x 51.25 in) Estimate: €6,000-8,000 Cuchulainn is receiving his Gae Bolga (lightning spear) from Scatach, the magic warrior. Cuchulainnn learnt magic and warfare from her. In the painting, they are floating on leaves to show the transfer of knowledge. The Tain. Queen Medb sent Morrigan to kill Cuchulainn. They fought in the river. During the fight Morrigan shifted from a crazy she-wolf to a vicious eel which attacked the hero from behind. He finally kills her in all forms and continues to battle Medb army. Then on the third day Fiar Diad put on a body amour and iron apron as protection against the infamous Gae Bulga. Fiar Diad through his sword which wounded Cuchulainn, burying itself in his side. Cuchulainn threw his Gae Bulga and pierced his friends heart. He stabbed a second time to make sure and it protruded through his body. The only colour here is the blood red of Cuchulainn’s eye and the wound of his friend.

Noah would not let her on the boat because she was a bit saucy so she built her own ship and sailed across the sea. The Nemedians, named after their leader Nemed (holy sacred) left their land with 34 ships. On their journey they saw a huge golden tower rising out of the sea. Driven by greed, most of the fleet approached the tower. Suddenly a great torrent rose causing the loss of the fleet. Only the chief and his ship survived. This magical tribe arrived with their flying ships on the Irish coast. They were initially unable to land because of an energy field created by another tribe, the Formorians. They had to circle Ireland nine times before they found their way through. Its rumoured that they destroyed their own ships upon entry to make a retreat impossible.

Lot 158 (Comprised of 3 Paintings) Martin Finnin (b.1968) Historical Cycle - A Vision of the Birdman mixed media on canvas signed lower left (91 x 131 cm) (35.75 x 51.5 in) Estimate: €5,000-7,000 Mad McSweeny was a high chieftain of Ireland who took offence to a priest building a church nearby. He promptly marched naked into that church and threw the priest and his chalice into a nearby river. The priest put a curse on him, to live naked and die by the point of a spear. McSweeny was called to assist in the battle of a friend that day and in the battle had a breakdown (or breakthrough) he took all his clothes off again and jumped on an enemies shield high up into a tree. McSweeny was a chief, a pagan, a hermit, wedded to the birds, the trees and the stars in the sky. He imagined that he was a bird and that he could fly around Ireland. He is nested in the treetop, staring at the stars. The towers of eyes on each side are a symbol of the paranoia he might have suffered. The Death of McSweeny. McSweeny came down from the trees for a little while and a man called Moling took pity on him. He asked his cook to give him a bowl of milk every day. The cook’s sister in law told the cook’s husband that she saw McSweeny giving the cook the glad eye and in a fit of jealousy the cook’s husband threw a spear at McSweeny as he was drinking the milk. It went through his heart and killed him. In this painting I would like the spirit of McSweeny to soar up into the sky like a bird.
