FOREWORD BY SANDY CHAPIN I have cherished my years living on the water at Point Lookout, Huntington Bay and Fire Island. Jim Lennon’s beautiful book Shoreline celebrates the special magic of Long Island’s waters; the music, the dappling lights, the shifting tides on the vast and endless Atlantic to the patchwork islands checkering the bays

THE WAVE I float, incessant waves sweep stray undulating curls over sand and brush my day.

and the Lighthouse stands’ silhouettes against the sky. I trace the sea. toes probe the tide, the rolling surge, the tumbling chase and slide, dive into the peak, crest atop the wall, alert to hold the break, waver, stall and fall, ride and feel the wake, this single form’s last stand forever gone, one lovely rise and splash upon the sand. —Sandy Chapin

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to express my gratitude to everyone who has encouraged and supported my love for photographing the landscape of Long Island. My family has always been the rock that I stand on. They are there whenever things seem shaky and they keep me in check when ever I get stiff-necked. My extended family of cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends help provide the levity and insight that keeps my mind open. A special thanks to my late brother Jackie who put my first SLR camera on his credit card and let me pay it off over time. Thank you to my dear friend Sandy Chapin for the beautiful prose and poetry she wrote in the forward. A special thank you to Jon Sasala and Morey Creative Studios for their design andproduction expertise. Thank you to the late Danny Farrell of the Daily News for his guidance when I started out. As a friend of my Dad’s he was the example of how successful a professional photographer can be. I have dedicated this book to my mom and dad, Jack and Marie Lennon, for being the shining example of what kind and loving is and for encouraging all of their children to pursue what they love and believe in.

PREFACE Long Island is located in the Southeast part of the U.S. State of New York, just across the East River from Manhattan. Long Island contains four counties, two of which are boroughs of New York City (Queens and Brooklyn) and two of which are primarily suburban neighborhoods (Nassau and Suffolk). The term “Long Island” often refers to Nassau and Suffolk counties in order to differentiate them from the New York City boroughs. Images in this book represent all four Long Island counties Current census estimates Long Island’s population at 7,838,722, the most populated island in any U.S. state or territory. Its population density is 5,595 inhabitants per square mile. If Long Island were a state it would rank 13th in population and first in population density. Geographically, Long Island is in its own unique territory stretching Northeast into the Atlantic Ocean between the Connecticut coastline and New York City. At 118 miles long, 23 miles at its widest point and surrounded by the ocean and Long Island Sound, it’s almost impossible be anywhere on this island without feeling the influence of the sea.

INTRODUCTION The fragile existence of an ocean community that is primarily made up of Sea, Sky and Sand is the source of both beauty and heartache. As scientists and politicians argue over the causes, it is an indisputable fact that the Earth is getting warmer. A warmer environment puts more water into the atmosphere and more water in the atmosphere gives us more intense weather. Some of the more recent weather has left our neighbors devastated and has forced many to refigure or reconsider their place by the sea. While our buildings and structures may need to change, our hearts remain in love with the place where the Sea, Sky and Sand converge. The images that fill these pages capture moments and places that define the beauty of a coastal region where you can always find your own place to take it in. Finding a place to enjoy the scenery is easy on this island, being there when the light turns magical takes patience. All over the island you can find people by the shore patiently waiting for the magic. The visual pleasure of this island home is never ending. It’s a special place.

Enjoy!
