Publisher’s Letter Like many of you, I love to drive and often take the long way to get to my destination. I must confess, I drive an exciting car, one I believe shows off my personality. Since we can't go fast by ourselves, we need a cool car. I love the growl of the engine, the purr of the exhaust and the sight of the landscape blowing past me.

28 Long Island's

Not only do I love speed, I love sound. Listening to music while driving is much different than listening to music at home. On the road, music becomes my soundtrack to life. It really makes driving more enjoyable when listening to my favorite tunes on top-quality stereo equipment.

Living on Long Island means that we drive a lot. Most of us commute to and from work, and on the weekends we like to relax, unwind and take a short trip.

DRIVEN TO

SUCCEED COMPETITION IS AN INTRINSIC PART OF JOE BUZZETTA’S DNA. Joe Buzzetta, Sr., founder of the Competition Automotive Group, possesses a formidable competitive spirit that made him a winner on and off the track, where he enjoyed a long and successful career as a championship racecar driver. Buzzetta always had a passion for cars. He grew up listening to car racing stories while working in the family business at the Bella Vista, a popular restaurant in Centerport frequented by SCAA (Sports Car Club of America) racers who regaled their escapades to Joe and other car enthusiasts. Buzzetta began racing hot rods stateside and continued racing in Europe while deployed in Germany with the US Army, accompanied by the love of his life, his wife Valerie.

THE WEDDING CAR 1959 Porsche Convertible D

While stationed in Frankfurt, Buzzetta bought what he calls the "Wedding Car," a 1959 Porsche Convertible D.

"I squeezed enough money from our wedding to buy my first Porsche, which did very well in four races, but then I wrecked it," Buzzetta recalls. When the Buzzettas returned to Long Island, Joe resumed his job as a bartender at the Bella Vista. He became friends with Oscar Rubio, one of the regulars at the restaurant, and like Joe, a car aficianado. In 1962 they opened a small car service operation in Smithtown, but Joe knew that to be successful they would need to sell cars too. Buzzetta’s racing career spanned from 1958 until his retirement after the '69 season. During those years, when sportscar racing was at its zenith, Buzzetta’s reputation as a serious, competitive driver led Porsche to offer him the coveted position as one of their first American factory drivers in 1964. He was the only American under contract, and he delivered, steering Porsche to the pinnacle of racecar dominance from 1965 to 1969.

Buzzetta was also an astute businessman who knew that he couldn’t race cars forever. He began to wind down his racing career in preparation for retirement and concentrated his efforts into building his retail automotive business and growing his family with his beloved wife, Valerie. Today, their three children, Joseph, Jim and Nancy, are all vested in the family business consisting of five flourishing dealerships. In addition to BMW and Mercedes-Benz, there were many changes as the Competition Auto Group grew. Various car manufacturers were sold under Competition Imports over the years, including American Motors, Datsun, Porsche and Toyota. To compliment the business, property was needed to house the growing company, and in 1970 Buzzetta purchased 599 Middle Country Road in St. James, which cemented Competition Automotive Group's presence in the Smithtown and St. James area. In the '80s Buzzetta parted ways with Rubio, and over time, his children became an integral part of the business. Working together, the family has grown the auto group to five stores, including one of the first Infiniti dealerships in the US in 1989. The group now employs more than 500 people. The third generation of Buzzettas, James Jr. is onboard, and will continue the legacy his grandfather started.

The family continues to invest in their company as well as the community and are involved with many non-profit organizations including the Stony Brook Children's Hospital, Smithtown Children's Foundation, Celebrating St. James and St. Charles Hospital.

Buzzetta took his massive collection of cars, racing memorabilia including rare and original photographs, posters, badges, miniature cars and other collectibles, and housed them in a climate-controlled museum-quality facility tucked away in Smithtown. The collection includes almost every model Porsche he drove during his racing career; the 904, 906, 907, 908 and 910. Buzzetta's philosophy, echoed by his children, is to succeed by developing long-term relationships with both employees and clients. In fact, Buzzetta has been a resident of St. James for more than 50 years.

AWARDS & RECOGNITION In 2007, Buzzetta was inducted into the Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame. In 2011, the Saratoga Automobile Museum in Saratoga Springs, NY honored Buzzetta’s skill as a racecar driver and highlighted his win at Nßrburgring, among other victories. The exhibit, "Porsche: 60 Years of Speed and Style in North America," chronicled Joe's entire career. After his retirement from racing, Joe began competing in vintage sports car racing and became a big player in the sport. Vintage racing meant Buzzetta had to adopt a different driving style. He excelled, helping to make vintage racing a popular spectator sport.

Joe Buzzetta recognized the importance of preserving racecar history. His sports car collection and memorabilia are second-to-none.

THE COLLECTION HISTORIC RACE WINNER Porsche 910 The Porsche 910 is a favorite in his collection, and the same model he drove to victory in 1967 at Nürburgring, Germany’s most prestigious sports car race. A historic moment, this race was Porsche’s first overall win at Nürburgring, after a decade of losses. To this day, it is known as the most sentimental victory in Porsche history, as Buzzetta’s team won the race before the home crowd, who went wild with glee.

THE

RAREST Porsche 907

There were only a handful of this model made worldwide. This car has an accomplished racing history.

THE

FASTEST

Porsche 908/2 The 908 is the fastest in his collection and was raced by Buzzetta at Daytona.

LONGEST HISTORY WITH BUZZETTA Porsche 906 One of only 62 in the world, Buzzetta raced the 906 in 1966 for the Porsche factory. It was sold, repurchased and restored several times. Buzzetta toured the country and won multiple races with the US Road Racing Championship (USRRC) Series in this car. COMPETITION MAGAZINE VOL . 1 ISSUE 2 competitionauto.com

NÜRBURGRING

Buzzetta (far right) with Udo Schutz (top left)

Nürburgring is Germany's most prestigious sports car race and one of the the most extreme races in the world. Situated in a forest, Nürburgring has been described as a race track that feels like a roller coaster with 73 corners weaving through extreme high and low elevations. In 1967, Buzzetta and Udo Schutz negotiated more than 176 sharp turns in the 1000 kilometer (600 mile) race to cross the finish line in first place. Not only was the win the highlight of his racing career, it gave Porsche their first overall win at their home track. Buzzetta has raced at 24-Hours LeMans, 12-Hours Sebring and 24-Hours Daytona and many other international competitions.

When it comes to the world of high-performance automobiles, there is no better place to see and test drive an extensive selection of high-powered vehicles than at a Competition Automotive Group dealership.

WHAT IS HORSEPOWER? In the late 18th century Scottish engineer James Watt adopted the term “horsepower” as a comparison between the output of steam engines and the power of draft horses.

Simply put, horsepower is force times speed. P/hp =

T/(in.lbf) x N/rpm 5252

It is a unit of measurement of power, or the rate at which work is done. Check out our beautiful new vehicles like the Subaru STiS209, some resurrected models like the BMW M850i xDrive, the new and powerful Mercedes-Benz AMG GT and after 40 years, the first redesign of the Mercedes-Benz AMG G63 Wagon.

On the South Shore of the East End the sand is as smooth as sugar, while the North Shore is dotted with rocks and seashells. Just like the beaches, the North and South Forks boast different personalities offering excitement, history, sports and leisure activities that will please anyone. The North Fork Flower Farm in Orient is a new "hidden gem" worth the trip. The goats from the Catapano Dairy Farm in Peconic produce the milk to make their fresh and delicious goat cheese; and for organic fruits and vegetables, stop at The Golden Earthworm in Riverhead. Be sure to visit Lavender By the Bay in East Marion, or if the kids are in tow, their Calverton location is across the street from Splish Splash, making this trip one for the entire family.

DESTINATION DELICIOUS HU SK & V I NE K I TC HEN & CO CK TA IL S

Small or shareable plates have become a platform for innovative chefs wanting to create a dining experience that serves up full-sized taste in smaller portions. In fact, in a report recently released by food energy experts Technomic, more than 70 percent of consumers order shareable meals so they can sample more than just one item on the menu. Plus, if dining with friends or family, sharing contributes to a fun and exciting restaurant experience.

EVERY MENU TELLS A STORY Long Island native Nicholas Trovato, chef and owner of Husk & Vine Kitchen & Cocktails in St. James, created a menu that featuring shareable plates that are big on taste.

“I wanted to walk the line between traditional small plate offerings to give customers menu choices that they never tried before and provide something completely different for the more adventurous,” says Trovato. Trovato, one of Long Island’s most hip and innovative chefs, got his inspiration from his grandmother Sophie, whose love for quality food and family traditions led him on his culinary journey.

50

To keep it interesting, Trovato changes up the food and drink menus every week, ensuring that his customers enjoy a unique and high-level dining experience. Since everything is centered around the Earth’s bounty, Trovato infuses his creations with thoughtfulness and ambition, while using only fresh and pesticide-free fruits and vegetables.

FOODIE FAVORITES When Trovato was crafting the menu, he reached out to a group of local "foodies" or gourmands to sample his creations. Once everyone was satisfied that a particular dish was menu-worthy, it was labeled a "foodie favorite." "We want our customers to experiment with tastes on an elevated, yet approachable level. They can try a couple of different things, while spending about as much as they would have on just one entrée," he says. A few "foodie favorites" include: Steakhouse Bacon Candy: A thick slab of Nueske bacon, "Billy" Blue Cheese, tomato jam served with a baby Iceberg wedge, was as sweet and savory as a delicious BLT, without the bread. "Disco Fries My Way" are crispy Polenta squares with fresh mozzarella curd, brown gravy and crispy onions. Long Island Local Butter and Wine Breads included warm, thick, fresh bread, served with raspberry, orange and truffle honey butter. If bread could be described like a Porterhouse Steak, this 1-inch slab of flavorable carbs would be it. COMPETITION MAGAZINE VOL. 1 ISSUE 2 competitionauto.com

Other menu items include: Ahi Tuna Poke Bowl with edamame, avocado, mango, spicy Tobiko mayo, sweet soy Asian slaw and seaweed salad. Creamy Burrata and Watermelon Radish Salad, with flesh that is tender, crisp and succulent served with local Burrata, grape tomatoes, baby rainbow Swiss chard and pomegranate-fig molasses. Mofongo Relleno de Churrasco is tender marinated skirt steak served with garlic-bacon smashed plantains, guacamole and lime sour cream. A smokey and delicious dish!

RAISING THE BAR The craft cocktail menu at Husk & Vine is just as interesting as the shareable plates: Creating a fresh interpretation on the Mule, Trovato went stateside with a few American versions, including an Oregon Mule with American-Born Whiskey, EG Rhubarb Ginger Liqueur and orange bitters. The Kentucky Mule is crafted from Private First-Class Bourbon and the Georgia Mule is a mixture of infused peach vodka, lemon juice, honey and ginger bitters. Other clever cocktails with a unique mixology are Born to Rum, Kween Bee, Swine in a Blanket and Sweet Chai of Mine. There’s a weekly tap list with staff favorites like Black Hog Granola Brown Ale and Einstok Icelandic Porter, and an extensive wine list.

EAT. DRINK. RELAX. REPEAT. At Husk & Vine, sharing food is its way of uniting and connecting people while dining on fresh and delicious favorites. A winning combination!
