The speaker at our June meeting was supposed to be Amanda Sutherland but, unfortunately, she had covid so was unable to come.

We have re-booked her for our November meeting when she will be talking about trends in costume design and fashion. We were so lucky that Mary Newton was able to step in at literally the last minute.

Members may remember an article about Mary in the April edition of WI Life. Mary was a London-based forensic pathologist for forty years. She worked on some very high-profile cases that you may have heard of, such as the murder of Stephen Lawrence and the Night Stalker attacks.

Her riveting talk entitled ‘Blood, Sweat and Fears’ covered a variety of topics such as the power of DNA profiling and blood pattern analysis.

Her enthusiasm for her job was evident and we could all imagine the way a hammer could throw droplets of blood at different angles. We were given the background and some of the forensic issues connected with very familiar cases which she had worked on.

Contrary to public perception, Mary assured us that forensic science is not a male dominated profession. Women are well represented and successful in the field because they tend to be tenacious and meticulous – both qualities that make for good forensic scientists.

By the end of the evening, she had certainly proved the point. Her talk was absolutely fascinating, and I suspect that most of us will never look at Sellotape in the same way again!

We are a friendly group who meet one the first Wednesday of the month at Moreton Hall Community Centre at 7.30 pm.

If you would like to join us, please feel free to come along for a ‘taster’ session. If you contact us first we will look out for you.

We are a friendly group and prospective members are always welcome, and your first meeting is free!
