Presidents Message

Chairman’s Message

Having been a member of Morecambe Warblers A.O.S. for over sixty five years it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to our 2016 production of “Legally Blonde”.

I have been involved in amateur dramatics all my life, after being taken to my first show at the Winter Gardens at the age of 10 weeks by my Mum.

This year we are pleased to welcome Zak Phillips-Yates as our Producer/Choreographer and Joanna Jeffreys as our Musical Director for this wonderful show and with a superb, young and energetic cast who have worked with dedication and enthusiasm I feel sure all our audiences will have an evening to remember. Thank you for your invaluable support which will ensure live theatre continues to thrive in our area for many years to come.

Morecambe Warblers

Amateur Operatic Society Registered Charity No. 1148184

From an early age I performed as a member of Junior Warblers and then progressed to Morecambe Warblers AOS when I became old enough. I have been involved in many productions, from helping with the scene shifting, in the chorus and also have been lucky to play many lead roles. These include Jerry and Dave in The Full Monty; Buggins in Half a sixpence, which is where I met my wife Carey; and Tinman in The Wizard of Oz where I got to play against my daughter Bethany, both particular favourites. I am extremely proud to be a Morecambe Warbler and from the energy I have witnessed during rehearsals from our talented and enthusiastic cast and production team, I know that you are in for a very enjoyable production of Legally Blonde The Musical. See you in the bar...

Members also have access to a wide range of benefits and support. N.O.D.A. is divided into eleven areas supported by a regional network of representatives who form a vital link to the grass roots of the association, the amateur theatre companies. The headquarters of the association are based in Peterborough where friendly, knowledgeable staff are on hand to deal with enquiries relating to amateur theatre.

Zak Phillips-Yates Director & Choreographer

Zak has recently become the Managing Director of the Dolphin Dance Studios in Liverpool where he originally trained as a dancer. During his professional dance career Zak has performed all over the world; on board cruise ships to America, the Caribbean and to Europe. He has also performed in South Korea and in the UK. Since returning to the UK, Zak has been Dance Captain for the last 3 years in pantomimes at the Liverpool Empire, has choreographed for Hollyoaks and assisted for BBC Three and other shows. He has also performed on television and film, appearing in Fast and Furious, Hollyoaks, Coronation Street, Shameless, Mount Pleasant and various adverts. Zak performed in amateur shows from the age of 15 and has now been choreographing in and around the area for the past few years. His work includes Oklahoma, Pop Rock Classics, The Awards show, 21st Century Musicals, (Garstang Musical Productions); A Slice of Saturday Night, Mother Goose, Annie, Aspects of Love (Preston Musical Comedy Society); Annie, (MADOS); Our House, Rent, Dare to Glee (Dare to Go Theatre). Being asked to both Direct and Choreograph “Legally Blonde” was an opportunity not to be missed, and his aim was to bring the best out of the cast by encouraging them to go beyond their comfort zone. He would like to thank all involved with the production. It has been a pleasure.

Joanna Jeffreys Musical Director

Joanna comes to Morecambe Warblers as our Musical Director for the first time, bringing with her 12 years experience as Musical Director for other amateur societies. She performed on stage in the Warblers 1992 production of Half A Sixpence, and since the age of 16 has played regularly for many amateur productions in this area and further afield. Joanna was nominated for NODA’s Best Musical Direction Award in 2010 for MAODS production of West Side Story and was delighted to be nominated, and win, the award outright in 2014 for Lancaster Red Rose’s production of White Christmas. Legally Blonde has been a challenge and Joanna would like to thank the cast for all their hard work and dedication and to the Committee for their support.

In Memoriam

Geoffrey Pearson Cousens In 1950 Geoff joined the famous and very successful Morecambe Warblers - not as a singer but as a dancing boy. He performed in several shows; Kiss Me Kate, Kismet and Annie Get Your Gun but in true Geoff style he became heavily involved with running the society. He met his wife Brenda when he helped out at Heysham Amateurs and made such an impression on her that she joined the Warblers to be with him. In later years he became Vice Chairman of the society and was a well respected and dedicated member of Morecambe Warblers.

Synopsis & Musical Numbers We take you on a musical journey from sorority house, to Harvard Law, to the Halls of Justice with Elle Woods and her little dog, Bruiser. Elle Woods appears to have it all, she is a perennially perky girl who loves to be pampered, and shops for the latest all-pink outfits (and matching handbags, of course). She is dating the cutest boy on campus, Warner Huntington III, is president of her sorority, and is a bubbly – natural blonde – who’s only wish is to become Mrs. Warner Huntington III. Her life is turned upside down when Warner dumps her so he can get Serious and attend Harvard Law School. Elle turns to her Delta Nu’s for support and advice and makes a decision to follow Warner. Warner heads off to Harvard, rekindles his relationship with Vivienne Kensington and starts his law degree with the infamous Professor Callahan. Elle, not to be outdone, uses her charm to get into Harvard but finds it hard to be What [they] Want, particularly where Professor Callahan is concerned. Eventually with the help of Paulette Bonafonté, a hairdresser with family roots in Ireland, and Emmett Forrest, Elle realises her potential and becomes one of the best in her class. Elle wins one of four coveted, intern spots with Professor Callahan, assisting the defence of Brooke Wyndham in a sensational murder trial. The outcome ensures Elle is no longer thought of as a stereotypical blonde...

Sophie Butler Elle Woods

Sophie found her real love for theatre back in high school when she was cast as Sandy in Grease. In 2011 she was given the part of Scaramouche in We Will Rock You, this role made her realise musical theatre was the route she wanted to take after sixth form. She then went onto study Music Theatre at UCLan. During this time she was involved in several productions, Songs For A New World being her favourite. This course was a major life changing experience for Sophie. Since leaving uni, she has played Wendy Jo in Footloose with Dare To Go and was also in LADOS’s The Witches of Eastwick. Sophie can’t thank the cast and crew enough for the love and support she has received since getting the lead role in this incredible show. Never in a million years did she think she could take on a role as big as ‘Elle Woods’. However, it has been one of the best experiences of her life and will be forever grateful to the people that gave her the chance to be Legally Blonde. She hopes you enjoy the show, and believes it was totally worth leaving her ginger hair behind!

Becky Halpin

Understudy Elle Woods / Ensemble Becky joined Morecambe Warblers in 2011 for their production of Wizard of Oz and has stayed with the society ever since, and earlier this year branched out and appeared in the final for Charity Stars at The Grand. This is Becky’s first principal role and she is ecstatic to have the opportunity to play such an iconic role with such a lovely and talented group of people. Becky would like to thank her friends and family for their support in helping her to pursue her love of performing and to achieve what she has. She hopes everyone enjoys the show as much as she has enjoyed being a part of it.

Duncan Ryan Emmett Forrest

Duncan’s time on stage has often been spent in the chorus or supporting roles, so coming into Legally Blonde as leading man is something of a challenge, but one he is very excited to take on. It showcases a different aspect of his abilities as there is very little for him in terms of comedy, an area which in his most recent roles has been very prominent. He played Willard in Footloose in April 2016 and enjoyed ‘learning to dance’, which for a dancer, is rather difficult! Other favoured roles include Cogsworth in Beauty and the Beast for MAODS, and Lewis in Our House. Duncan feels very lucky to be playing opposite 2 fantastic ladies throughout the week and has really enjoyed seeing them both grow into their roles. It has been great to work with the whole cast as Assistant Director whilst learning from the talents of Zak Phillips-Yates. Duncan hopes you all enjoy the show.

Ceri Hamer Paulette Bonafonté

Ceri is very excited to be returning to Morecambe Warblers after a year off and is looking forward to performing the part of Paulette. She has particularly enjoyed shopping for outfits as it has allowed her inner hippy chick to be set free. Ceri is also happy to be sharing the stage with her own little ‘Westie’ Molly who is making her debut as ‘Rufus’. Rehearsals for the show have been lots of fun and she hopes you all enjoy the show.

Gabrielle Dams (Margot)

Training: Robinson Read School of Dance and Productions/Jazz Scholar for British Ballet Organization. Gabrielle has recently been filming for TV. Her past performances include Cinderlla in Cinderella (UK Tour), Eva Peron in Evita, Silly Girl 2 in Beauty and the Beast , Ursula/Postulant in The Sound of Music and Ronnie Boylan/Annette in Annie - all performed with MAODS. Last year, she played Johanna in Warbler’s NODA nominated Sweeney Todd. Gabrielle is Delighted to be given the chance to play Margot and would like to thank her family and friends for their love and support.

Anna Weatherall

(Serena)

This is Anna’s second show with Morecambe Warblers having joined the society for South Pacific in 2014. She is no stranger to the stage having performed in several productions in both Bolton and Lancaster. Some of her favourite roles include Marty in Grease, Billie in Our House and Rosalia in West Side Story. Serena has been a challenge for Anna but she has enjoyed taking on the role, particularly perfecting the Bend and Snap.

Claire Savage

(Pilar)

This is Claire’s third production with Warblers, and she regularly performs in productions with other local societies too. Some of her favourite roles have included Wendla in Spring Awakening, Mimi in Rent, Sarah in Our House, Urleen in Footloose, and Sukie in The Witches of Eastwick. After seeing Legally Blonde several times in the West End, the show very quickly became one of Claire’s favourite musicals. She has loved the challenges of bringing Pilar’s character to life and has enjoyed learning the harmonies and choreography that enhance this fabulous show.

Amy Lawton

(Gaelen)

Amy is eighteen years old and has just left school after completing A Levels in Drama and Music Performance. She has performed in many musicals over the past few years and has recently carried out roles in productions of Chicago, Oliver, Little Shop of Horrors and Footloose. She has been performing since a young age and feels extremely fortunate to now be involved with the Warblers. She has had an absolute blast being a part of this society and working with such talented cast and crew. She has loved the rehearsal process for this show and cannot wait to hit the stage. Amy wants to thank you for coming to watch and she hopes you thoroughly enjoy the show.

Cathy-May Moorhouse

(Kate)

Cathy has been involved in Amateur Dramatics since she was very young. Cathy has been lucky enough to play various roles including Oliver in Oliver , Annie in Annie, and most recently Rusty in Footloose. Cathy has been involved with the Morecambe Warblers for over 10 years and feels privileged to be playing the part of ‘Kate’ with a strong, talented group that have become good friends and a big part of her life over the past few months.

Chloë Isherwood

(Leilani)

From an early age Chloë has always been apart of amateur dramatics. From playing Frenchie in Grease to playing Bangles in Bugsy Malone, she has always loved being part of Morecambe Warblers and a variety of musicals. ‘Snaps’ for everyone in the audience and cast and she hopes you have a great show!

Chloe Butterworth

(Amber)

Chloe’s first appearance on stage with the Warblers was for their 2011 production of The Wizard of OZ. Since then, her love for performing and grown and grown. Chloe has performed in other Warblers productions, including Bugsy Malone, and Oklahoma, as well as number of productions at her former school, Heysham High, including Back to the 80s. This year sees Chloe take on the new challenge of studying Music at Kendal College - something she’s really excited about!

Legally Blonde

Page 11

Simon ‘Yakkers’ Yaxley

(Professor Callahan)

‘Yakkers’ is making his debut on stage at the Grand Theatre with Morecambe Warblers and is loving every minute playing Callahan! The Grand is becoming like a second home to Yakkers, with forthcoming productions of Black Coffee, and the pantomime Cinderella. When not on stage, you can hear Yakkers on Lakeland Radio’s Breakfast show - weekday mornings 6am - 10am! He asks that you don’t hate him too much he’s a nice bloke really!! That’s Yakkers - not Callahan!

Samuel Wicks

(Warner Huntington the Third)

This is Samuel’s second appearance in a Morecambe Warblers production after his appearance in Sweeney Todd as Toby. Samuel has been involved in amateur dramatics since leaving sixth form a year ago, and is hoping to attend drama school at the end of 2017. Samuel’s most recent performance was in The Witches of Eastwick, in which he played the juvenile lead, Michael Spofford.

Sarah Purcell

(Vivienne Kensington)

Sarah has been in a number of local productions over the past 5 years including Joseph, Jesus Christ Superstar and most recently Sweeney Todd. She is a big fan of musicals and has enjoyed singing and dancing her whole life. Much to her family’s pride this role goes against her previous turns which included parts as a prostitute, a prostitute and a prostitute! Sarah lives in Morecambe with her husband and two year old daughter who will not be attending the performance despite her clearly stated desire to do so.

Hannah Morris

(Brooke Wyndham)

This is Hannah’s first show with Morecambe Warblers, although she has been on the stage since she was 3 years old, and has performed at the Grand Theatre in recent years with MAODS. Hannah is very excited to be playing Brooke, not only because she gets to shout inappropriately at her fellow cast members, but because it has been a great motivation to lose her baby weight! She would like to say a big thank you to Morecambe Warblers for welcoming her into the society and a big thank you to the audience for coming to watch. If you want to find Hannah, she is probably ‘method acting’ at the gym...

Suzanne Willey

(Enid Hoops)

Suzanne’s time in the theatre began off-stage, working with the props team, before catching the stage bug and joining in with the ensemble for many of the local societies. Since then, Suzanne has taken on small roles including Roger’s Mum in Rent, Julie in Our House, and Betty Blast in Footloose. She first joined Warblers’ for their production of South Pacific, and has really enjoyed being part of such a welcoming and friendly society. Suzanne is really excited to be playing Enid in Legally Blonde, and is looking forward to the challenge.

Matthew Neale

(Kyle / Ensemble)

Matt is twenty nine years old and this is his second amateur show in the area. He took part in Witches of Eastwick earlier in the year and enjoyed it so much he decided he had to take on the role of Kyle. Matt works full time and has enjoyed attending rehearsals in his spare time. He has enjoyed playing the part of the sexy UPS guy so much that he may start wearing tight fit shorts on a more regular basis. Matt thinks highly of the cast and crew and has loved working with them over the past few months. He cannot wait to perform this evening and he hopes you enjoy the show.

Lola

Molly

Lola is a 3 year old Chihuahua, who loves going on walks, playing with pom-poms, and her big brother - MoJo!

Molly is a 9 year old Westie, who loves walks on the beach, sausages, and her Westie brother - Perkins.
