STEPHEN ROBINSON W

THE MANAGER’S COLUMN

ELCOME to the Mazuma Stadium for our first two home games in Sky Bet League One against Shrewsbury Town and Rotherham United. These are my first home league games in charge since taking over and I am really looking forward to seeing us host games in front of our fans for the first time against two good sides in Shrewsbury and Rotherham. I would firstly like to say a huge thank you to the fans and everyone in the town for the welcome I have had since I came here in the summer. Everyone has been so positive and supportive and I can’t thank people enough for how they have helped me settle in. It has been a frantic opening few weeks at the club I have to admit. We have had to sign a lot of new players in a short period of time and had to prepare a new squad pretty quickly to get us ready for the season. It has been hard work for everyone but the reaction from the lads has been superb. Although it is very early days yet there are some promising signs with the draw at Ipswich last Saturday and the victory at Blackburn in midweek showing that we have a squad that can compete and will, I believe, get better as we go. We have already seen that when we play on the front foot and at pace, we can create chances and that is something we must continue to do over these next two games. We were all disappointed to concede so late at Ipswich but I think we learned from that pretty quickly, and used that experience to help us see out the game against Blackburn on Tuesday.

everyone has been brilliant so far. One thing I do demand is energy and a desire to improve, and the early signs have been extremely positive. As a group we are still very much finding our feet but we have done really well so far. There is a lot of competition for places and people will have to be at the top of their game to keep their places and that is how it should be. To go to Ipswich and be within seconds of picking up a win and to follow that up with a fantastic victory at Blackburn shows great promise and something that we should take confidence from. We know there will be ups and downs as the season goes on - there always is. But whatever happens we will compete for everything and work hard, day in day out, for this football club and look to make an impression on League One. One thing I have to mention is the support we had from the stands at Ipswich and Blackburn. Our fans travelled in good numbers and really got behind us in both games. Now we are at home I really do hope that noise continues. I know that the club has sold a record number of season tickets and that is brilliant. Home form is vital to the success of any club in any league and we start our journey at the Mazuma today so please keep up that support.

Stephen

THE CAPTAIN’S COLUMN

T’S great to be back at the Mazuma Stadium and in front of fans for these first two home games of the season in Sky Bet League One.

at Ipswich on the opening day of the season after conceding so late. But we went on and beat Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday with another excellent display.

Winning promotion in the way we did at Wembley a few weeks ago was a brilliant moment for myself, for the fans and the club. It was something that will stay with me for the rest of my life and to have friends and family there to share those memories, made it all the more special for everyone.

We have to remember that Blackburn played virtually their first team and wanted to win the game, but after a slow start we went on to have the better of the second half and deservedly win the game in my opinion.

For those of us who remember that day at Coventry when we had to battle to stay in the Football League, it was the end of a remarkable turnaround in fortunes that was built on hard work and determination by everyone at the club and I think that also made it even more special. The thing about football though is that you can’t ever celebrate for too long, and we have to put that to the back of our minds now, as we set about the challenge of League One for the first time ever. We need to kick on now and keep on improving. We will do that with a new gaffer and a host of new players after a really busy summer for the club on and off the field. We have brought in some really good players and I think we have an excellent squad. We have some excellent younger players but also good experience with a core of players who performed so well for us last season. Although it is early days we have so far produced two really good performances.

We are certainly not getting above ourselves because it is a long season with a lot of challenges ahead, but we have to take confidence from the start we have had and look to build on this in these games against Shrewsbury and Rotherham. It is going to be great to see the fans back in good numbers again, and to hear that we smashed our record for season ticket sales was brilliant. Our home form was excellent last year and is something we need to replicate this season at the Mazuma Stadium. That home form really helped us get over the line. Teams with good home records tend to do well and if we can get that consistency going here and get the fans right behind us, we can look to make life difficult for opponents and pick up points. Thank you all for your support. We missed you last season and we are so glad to see you back. Please get right behind us over these two games.

VIEW FROM THE BOARDROOM O here we are, our first home games in the EFL League One and enjoying the highest position in our 101-year history!

A warm Lancashire welcome to the players, officials and supporters of our guests from Shropshire and South Yorkshire and a personal welcome to the long-standing Shrewsbury Town Chairman, Roland Wycherley and Rotherham’s Tony Stewart, with whom we have had many a friendly joust with over the years. It would be remiss of me not to mention the Shrews’ manager, Steve Cotterill, who has had a torrid time battling the Covid-19 virus over the past few months. Steve, welcome back to the dugout. The euphoria of the League Two Play-Off Final was soon followed by the departure of Derek Adams to pastures new. I must place on record our thanks to Derek for the magnificent job he did here at Morecambe, and wish him well for the future. Victory at Wembley Stadium on Monday 31 May, was swiftly followed with applicants for the vacant manager’s chair here at the Mazuma Stadium flooding in. These were whittled down to a short-list and interviews took place on Saturday, 5 June. For me and a number of my colleagues, after reading Stephen Robinson’s CV, he was the stand-out candidate, something that became apparent during his interview. We had no hesitation in quickly offering him the job and he has certainly hit the ground running at 200mph! Stephen brought our former player, Diarmuid O’Carroll, with him as first team coach and we wish them both a successful tenure here in Morecambe. We have made appointments in a number of key areas

here at the Mazuma. Ben Sadler, our new General Manager, has joined us from Harrogate Town. Ben is responsible for all the non-football areas of running the club and I am delighted that he is on-board as it makes my life so much easier! Ryan Daly comes to us after working for the EFL and is our Head of Media & Communications. Rob Davidson is our new Head Groundsman and joins us from a senior position on the ground-staff at Reading FC. Rob is a Morecambe lad and has come home! May I take this opportunity to welcome all three of them to the Shrimps’ family as we settle into life in League One. It would be remiss of me not to mention the commitment and efforts of Terry “Chesh” Turner, our Head Groundsman for the past 26 years. Chesh has reduced his hours of work so that he can enjoy some fishing, gardening and cycling while still remaining part of the Mazuma family. Chesh, enjoy your semi-retirement, go out, have fun and don’t let the grass grow under your feet! Last Saturday was amazing for us Shrimps supporters, playing Ipswich Town at Portman Road as equals. Approaching the stadium on the team bus with supporters milling around it actually felt like a matchday again! Our performance on the park was magnificent, with only an injury-time equaliser from our hosts spoiling the day. Football is nothing without fans in our stadiums. The recent debacle regarding the proposed European Super League showed the contempt that some clubs have for their supporters. Don’t be an armchair fan of a club you may never actually watch in person, come to the likes of Morecambe, Shrewsbury Town and Rotherham United for real football, real fans, real support, and pride in your local club. CLUB

NEWS PHILLIPS PRAISES HIS TEAM MATES PENALTY hero Adam Phillips praised his team mates after their superb Carabao Cup win over Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park on Tuesday. Burnley loanee Phillips grabbed the headlines as he scored the winner from the penalty spot nine minutes from time but was quick to credit his team mates for the win. “It was a great team performance,” Phillips said. “We didn’t start off great, I’m one of the new players just getting to know the shape, I’m a bit out of shape but we managed to get in at half time still in the game. The gaffer changed the shape around a bit and it paid off in the second half. “I think the two lads up front were brilliant, running in behind. Y,ou could see how much they’re a threat and then to get the winner at the end was nice as well. “I was a player at Blackburn as a kid, so it’s obviously nice to go back there and score an important goal like that. It was a great experience and one that will stay with me.”

WOOTON AND HARRISON JOIN CLUB

SCOTT Wooton and Shayon Harrison became Stephen Robinson’s latest signings of the summer in midweek.

Wooton, pictured, who has accumulated over 280 career appearances to date, has experience across the Sky Bet Championship, League One and League Two and progressed through the ranks at Manchester United as a youngster. Wootton also has two Champions League appearances to his name, both of which came against CFR Cluj in the group stages of the 2012/13 season. Talking about the move he said: “I’m delighted to be here. “I’m glad to finally get it done and I look forward to having a successful season with the club, the first time the club has been in League One so positive times and I’m looking forward to it. “I’ve got experience playing in this league and higher, so I need to bring that to the team and show my composure. We need to keep clean sheets so first and foremost we need to defend well, and I need to be a leader at the back, that’s what I want to bring to the team. “It’ll be a tough season, that’s to be expected for all

teams, there’s no easy games but there’s also no team to fear.’’ The club also signed former AFC Wimbledon striker Harrison on a short-term deal which runs until January. The 24-year-old came through Spurs’ academy and went on to have spells with Yeovil and Southend. He most recently played for the Dons last season after joining from Dutch side Almere City in February. “I can add goals to the team, I’m very direct, I like to get in behind and I know I can offer a lot,” he said.

BEYOND RADIO BACKING THE SHRIMPS THE Shrimps have teamed up with Beyond Radio with the station providing full-match commentary for iFollow Shrimps. Supporters will be able to listen to exclusive, full and uninterrupted radio commentary of every single game, home and away, which will be broadcast simultaneously across North Lancashire on 103.5 and 107.5FM, as well as on the iFollow Shrimps platform Joining ‘Shrimps Live’ is experienced broadcaster, Dave Salmon. Dave has more than 20 years experience in the media industry, and is no stranger to the Mazuma Stadium, having been Sports Editor and a presenter at the former Bay Radio between 2008 and 2013, where he hosted the popular ‘Goal Zone’ show every matchday. Shrimps Live will also welcome special guests during the season and in addition to full match commentary, also on offer will be a ‘Shrimps Verdict’ podcast, featuring online, on demand content, including audio match highlights, post-match interviews and reaction, and the chance for supporters to have their say.

Dave said: “Beyond Radio has established itself as an integral part of the local community in recent years and this is reflected in the station’s significant investment in the new coverage.” The club would like to thank David Freear, Glen Cooper, Mark Swindlehurst, Steve Downes and others who have devoted their time to providing supporters with a fantastic commentary service over the past 10 years. Shrimps Live will broadcast from 2.45pm on Saturdays and 7:30pm for midweek games. Morecambe vs Shrewsbury Town // Morecambe vs Rotherham United

JOKULL ANDRESSON WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO THE CLUB? “I obviously played here a couple of times last season when I came on an emergency loan for two games. "When I was here I just felt that there was a real community feel about the club with everyone working closely together. For me, coming from Iceland, where there is a real focus on family, it was very much about being part of a good group of people and being part of a community and it really drew me to Morecambe, so when the offer came to come back here for the season I jumped at the chance. '' WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES FOR THE SEASON? "I am excited about playing in League One for the first time. I am stepping up a league now after playing in League Two last season and I know I am ready for that step up. DID YOU ALWAYS WANT TO BE A GOALKEEPER? "I didn't to be honest. When I was really young I wasn't really into football. It was my older brother who was football mad and he just needed someone to go in goal and I actually quite enjoyed it so I have my brother to thank.'' TELL US ABUT YOUR DAD? "My dad was a world class Strongman - ranked number one in the world at one stage - and he is an absolute nutter. I had never thought of joining him in the strongman game because that has always been his sport. Definitely not for me.''

UNDER 18s GO DOWN FIGHTING IN FINAL

MORECAMBE U18s 1 WIGAN ATHLETIC 2

I

T was a very wet afternoon down at the County Ground for the Lancashire FA Professional Youth Cup Final.

The boys kept going and got a consolation goal through Ben Jones after a really effective high press. Coach Neil Wainwright said: “It would have been interesting had the game gone on five or 10 minutes longer, but no sooner had we picked the ball up and carried it back to the centre circle then the referee blew the final whistle.

It’s been a long time coming due to Covid with the final originally set to be played some time ago yet the game didn’t disappoint.

“Wigan deserved the win on the day but it was a tight affair that on another day could have gone in our favour.

Both sides had good chances in the first half, Adam Mayor a particular threat for Morecambe down the left hand side. But it was Wigan who took the lead midway through the first half.

“We now look forward to the start of the Youth Alliance campaign next week.’’

The young Shrimps had needlessly given away a corner and it was punished with a powerful header to put the Latics 1-0 up. It stayed that way until half time and, although Morecambe kept the ball much better in the second half, they couldn’t quite find the breakthrough. Wigan pretty much sealed the result with 10 minutes left, a superb finish from outside the box after Morecambe gave the ball away in a defensive area.

INTRODUCING

JAMES MAIN LOOKS AT SHREWSBURY TOWN

T

HE Shrimps’ first home game in League One is against Shrewsbury Town.

The Shropshire based side have been in the third tier of English football since 2015, and their highest finish in the division since they were promoted came in 2017-18 when they finished third and lost to 2-1 to Rotherham in the Play-Off Final at Wembley. Last season they finished 17th in a lacklustre campaign where they never made it out of the bottom half of the table. They found themselves in the relegation places early on, so replaced manager Sam Ricketts with Steve Cotterill in November and they managed to steer themselves out of the dreaded bottom four. Their highlight of the season was making it to the Third Round of the FA Cup. A trip to St Mary’s in Southampton saw them lose 2-0 to the Premier League side.

appearances for Blackburn Rovers in the Championship; and Ryan Bowman, who was Exeter’s second top scorer last season with 14 goals. Head-to-head, the Shrimps have only won four times in 14 meetings between the two sides. The last clash came in 2017 in the FA Cup, when Shrewsbury won 2-0. Cotterill’s side have also won all the last five meetings between the two sides. Shrewsbury Town could not give Cotterill a memorable return to the dugout as they slipped to a 1-0 home defeat against Burton Albion on the opening day. Cotterill, who was hospitalised with Covid-19 in January, made an emotional return to the touchline for the first time in front of almost 6,000 fans.

Shaun Whalley was Salop’s top scorer last season with nine goals in all competitions, and the midfielder remains with the club. In pre-season, Cotterill’s side only played three games – beating Telford 3-2, Hereford 2-1 and playing Exeter on the last Saturday before the start of the season. In terms of transfers, they lost 11 players over the summer including Scott Golbourne, who retired, and the other 10 who were released included veteran striker Leon Clarke as well as Donald Love and Curtis Main. At the time of writing, they’ve made six signings – including defender Matthew Pennington from Everton; Elliott Bennett, who made nearly 200

STEVE COTTERILL OPPOSITION MANAGER

E

XPERIENCED manager Steve Cotterill joined Shrewsbury Town late in November 2020 - signing a three-and-a-half-year deal at Montgomery Waters Meadow.

and tactics during matches, for which he earned significant praise for putting his body on the line.

The former Nottingham Forrest and Birmingham City boss joined the Salop having already achieved EFL Trophy and Sky Bet League One title medals with Bristol City.

A turnaround in results, which included three consecutive 1-0 wins at three of the top four, lifted the Shrews well clear of the mire by New Year. And Shrewsbury continued to earn crucial wins through February and March, eventually finishing 17th.

In Cotterill’s first game, the Shrews progressed into the third round of the Emirates FA Cup after victory over nonleague Oxford City.

The road to returning to pre-season training has been tough but has brought a welcome and much-needed distraction.

Cotterill replaced Sam Ricketts at the club, who was sacked with the club sitting 23rd in League One.

“I had a goal to be back here. I knew I had to be here by July 1st” Cotterill said.

Cotterill then sadly missed four months of last season after contracting Covid-19.

“I have a very good set of staff who I trust implicitly and they were incredible while I was away. It made me realise I have to be a better delegator. I have never been a very good delegator and it is wrong because the more I include people, the more valued they will feel and the more they will feed back.

He suffered a serious bout and extreme after effects and spent just shy of 50 days in hospital during two spells. On the first occasion he was taken by ambulance after he got progressively worse after a 10-day spell isolating. “I was mainly sleeping when I was isolating,” he said. “It was a tough 10 days and then I went home for three or four days and was almost being force-fed. I wasn’t getting better and I knew I was in trouble. “The coughing was relentless and one morning I thought I was going to faint. I was poorly for a while when I went into hospital and I knew I was in a bad way.” He continued to manage from afar, working on all phases of training and match preparation, as well as team talks

“I have been wrong with that over the years. Being ill won’t make me any more desperate not to win a game on a Saturday and any more lenient with the boys in training if I don’t think they are doing what I want. I will have my moments. “The big thing is about helping other people with this now. It has made me appreciate life. But I’m OK, I’m here, fit, strong and healthy but not quite as fit, strong and healthy as I was. But I will get back there. It will take me a bit of time, but I will get back there - definitely.”

THREE TO WATCH

MARKO MAROSI - GOALKEEPER

Shrewsbury completed the signing of Marko Marosi in the summer from Coventry City for an undisclosed fee. Born in Michalovce in Slovakia, Marosi began his career in England with Barnoldswick Town back in 2012, spending a season with the Lancashire club aged 18. Following an impressive trial at Wigan, Marko joined the Latics for a year, but without making an appearance, he would go on to join Doncaster Rovers.

It would be with Doncaster where the ‘keeper would finally make his mark, as he would go on to make just under 100 appearances. However, following the end of his deal in 2019, he made the move to the Sky Blues. Marko established himself as the Sky Blues’ number one, helping City win promotion and the League One title in his first season. Marosi kept 16 clean sheets during the 2019/20 season, earning himself a spot in the PFA League One Team of the Year.

AARON PIERRE - DEFENDER Born in Southall, London, Aaron Pierre began his career at home in the youth system with Fulham but was released by the West-London club in 2011. In 2012, Pierre signed for Brentford. During the 2013-14 season he went on loan to Cambridge United but failed to nail down a place. Another move came during that season, as he was loaned to Wycombe Wanderers before signing a permanent contract with the Chairboys in the next transfer window. His stint with the Buckinghamshire outfit came to an end when Northampton Town snapped him up in 2017. Pierre joined the Shrews in June 2019 for an undisclosed fee - signing a three-year deal. In January 2020, Pierre scored a famous 89thminute winning goal in a 1–0 home win against Championship side Bristol City in an FA Cup third round replay to set up a fourth round tie with Premier League giants Liverpool. He was named the club’s Player of the Year in June

JOSH VELA - MIDFIELDER Josh Vela joined Shrewsbury Town in the 2020 January transfer window from Scottish Premier League side Hibernian – signing a two-and-a-half-year deal at the Montgomery Waters Meadow.

After 182 appearances for Bolton over a 17 year period, Vela made the move north of the border, signing a three year contract with Hibs.

The box-to-box midfielder began his career with Bolton where he joined the club aged nine.

Despite the deal he spent just six months with the Edinburgh club and made just 14 appearances before putting pen to paper on a deal in Shropshire.

He enjoyed a prominent rise through the ranks and made his debut for the Wanderers in the Premier League against Swansea in 2012.

He certainly made his impact on the team’s fortunes and won both the fan’s and player’s Player of the Year awards for the 2020–21 season.

NATHANAEL OGBETA - 14

ETHAN EBANKS-LANDELL - 4

Harry Burgoyne joined Town from Wolverhampton Wanderers in the 2020 January transfer window after spending 12 years with Wolves. The 23-year-old goalkeeper has played in every age group for the Molineux men – including the first-team – most notably, against Liverpool in the FA Cup.

Hailing from Salford, Nathanael is a defender who signed for Shrewsbury Town in the 2021 January transfer window from Premier League outfit Manchester City signing an 18-month contract.

Ethan EbanksLandell signed for the Shrews in May 2019 on a threeyear deal from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

His other taste of first-team football came during loan spells with A.F.C Telford United, Barnet, Falkirk, Lowestoft Town and Corby Town.

The 19-year-old first joined City at 10-years-old and spent nine years in the academy. An England U16 international, he represented the Young Lions, in the Montaigu Tournament in April 2017. Primarily a left-back but also comfortable in midfield, Nathanael describes himself as 'confident and composed' on the ball.

Ethan is a product of the Wolves Academy – having joined the West Midlands outfit aged nine. In December 2010, he had his first involvement with the first team after being an unused substitute for a win against Birmingham. While at Wolves, Ebanks-Landell was sent out on loan three times, spending time with Bury, Sheffield United and Milton Keynes Dons who all competed in League One.

MATTHEW PENNINGTON - 5

GEORGE NURSE - 23

OLLIE NORBURN - 8

Matthew joined the Shrews in the January 2021 transfer window as Steve Cotterill's second signing of the period. The Evertonian made the move to Shropshire on loan until the end of the season.

Full-back George joined Town from Bristol City on a two-year deal in the summer.

Ollie joined Town from Tranmere Rovers in August 2018 for an undisclosed fee – signing a three-year deal.

Pennington began his career in the Toffees' youth system but has since enjoyed a number of loan spells in the Sky Bet Championship and League One. with Leeds United, Ipswich Town and Hull City. He is another member of the Town squad who has represented England at youth level having appeared for England under-19s.

Town's Manager Steve Cotterill said: "He's not just a full-back, that's why we've signed him. We've been looking for someone who can be flexible for us and George gives us that. He can play wing-back, left-sided centre-back in a three, or as a full-back. George is a good signing for us and he can in play many areas.''

The former Newport County defender makes the move to Shropshire having spent last season on loan with Walsall.

Norburn began his career with Leicester City. The central-midfielder rose through the ranks with the Foxes but was unable to nail down a place in the first-team. His first taste of senior football came during a one-month loan spell with Bristol Rovers. After an impressive short stint, the transfer was made permanent . His other former clubs include Plymouth Argyle, Guiseley, Macclesfield Town and Tranmere.

JOSHUA DANIELS - 22 Joshua Daniels joined Shrewsbury Town from the Northern Ireland Football League side Glenavon in 2020 - signing a two-year deal in Shropshire. Previous to joining Glenavon, the 24-year-old tricky winger played for his home town club Derry City. The midfielder has also spent time with Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland youth set-ups. He made his competitive debut for Shrewsbury as a substitute in a 4–3 defeat to Middlesbrough in the EFL Cup in September 2020.

ELLIOTT BENNETT - 17 Town completed the signing of former Premier League wideman Elliott Bennett when he joined from Blackburn Rovers in the summer. Bennett began his career with Wolves, making two appearances in the League Cup, before going out on loan to Crewe and Bury. He joined Brighton & Hove Albion in 2009, helping them win promotion to the Championship in 2011 – scoring eight goals as he was named in the League One team of the season. That earned him a move to the Premier League with Norwich City. Though the Canaries were relegated in 2014, he helped them back up to the top flight through the play-offs 12 months later.

SHAUN WHALLEY - 7 Liverpoolborn winger Shaun spent times in the non-league and lower reaches of the league at the likes of Accrington Stanley, Wrexham, Southport and Droylsden. A move to Luton Town saw Shaun win promotion to the Football League, before joining Town in the summer of 2015. After a difficult first six months with Shrewsbury, Whalley scored seven goals after Christmas and has since gone onto become a firm fans favourite. The 2017/18 season was Whalley's most productive yet as he scored 12 goals in 58 appearances.

A loan move to Cotterill's Bristol City followed, before joining Blackburn Rovers in January 2016. REKEIL PYKE - 15 The striker joined the club at the beginning of the 2020/21 season as a free agent having left Huddersfield Town earlier that summer signing a three-year deal at the club. Pyke spent his early years with Huddersfield Town and gained valuable first-team experience during loan spells with Colchester United, Port Vale, Rochdale and Wrexham - where he worked with former Town Manager Sam Ricketts. Known for his strength and pace, Ricketts was pleased to have secured his man ahead of the 20/21 campaign.

DANIEL UDOH - 11 Udoh signed a two-year contract extension at Montgomery Waters Meadow with an option for a further year in the Club's favour in the summer. The striker, who joined Salop from AFC Telford United, signed a deal in Shropshire that will see him remain at the Club until at least 2023. An ever-present member of the Salop XI last season, the 24-year-old made 44 appearances for the Shrews as he looked to impress Town manager Steve Cotterill. Born in Nigeria, Udoh moved to England agd nine. When he became a teenager, he joined Luton Town’s development squad and later moved on to the Stevenage academy.

RYAN BOWMAN - 12 Ryan signed for Salop in June 2021 from Exeter City The forward came through the youth ranks with Carlisle United before moving to Darlington where he would spend one season before joining Hereford United. Despite making a host of appearances in the 2012/13 season, he then opted to join York City before his first spell in Devon arrived in 2014. The striker spent one season with Torquay United where he netted 12 times in 37 appearances before moving back north to Gateshead.

ON THIS DAY

PRESTON NORTH END 1 MORECAMBE 2

DAVID Artell scored on 84 minutes to earn League Two’s Morecambe a shock win over Preston and send the Championship side crashing out of the Carling Cup. Preston keeper Wayne Henderson failed to hold on to a long free-kick from Adam Yates and Artell was on hand to poke home from close range. Skipper Jim Bentley gave Morecambe the lead with a firm right-footed volley. Danny Pugh headed in the equaliser for Preston after he met Karl Hawley’s cross at the back post. The Preston players were poor in the first half and were booed by the home support when they came off for the interval, but they moved up the gears after the break. Preston’s Sean St Ledger headed over from a Kevin Nicholls free-kick before Hawley’s 20-yard strike was tipped over by Joe Lewis. But they were left to rue not making the most of their few clear-cut chances when Artell capitalised of Henderson’s mistake. Morecambe’s victory came in their first League cup tie and it was their first competitive win over their neighbours. CONNECTIONS

NATHANIEL KNIGHT-PERCIVAL

The current Tranmere defender gave up a job in a car factory to turn pro with Wrexham and after winning the Football League Trophy with Peterborough in 2014 he joined Shrewsbury Town on a free transfer and was promoted out of League Two at the end of the 2014–15 season. He was appointed as club captain in January 2016, though took a free transfer to Bradford City in July 2016. He made 135 competitive appearances for Bradford over the course of three seasons, though was released following relegation out of League One in May 2019. He spent the 2019–20 season with Carlisle United before joining the Shrimps last season and becoming a popular and integral member of the promotion winning side, before rejoining former Shrewsbury boss Micky Mellon at Prenton Park.

CHRIS NEAL The AFC Fylde goalkeeper was part of the Shrimps’ promotion winning squad at Wembley as an emergency signing on loan from Preston following the injury to Steven Drench. After leaving North End he had successful spells with Shrewsbury Town, Port Vale and Fleetwood before joining Salford in 2018. He made 51 appearances throughout the campaign as Salford qualified for the Play-Off Semi-Finals with a third-place finish, and he saved two penalties in the shoot-out following a 1–1 draw with Eastleigh to secure a place in the Final. A 3–0 victory over AFC Fylde in the final won Salford a place in the English Football League for the first time. He shared the first-team goalkeeping spot with current Shrimps’ keeper Kyle Letheren during the 2019–20 season.

ANDREAS ARESTIDOU The Morecambe-born keeper was a junior with Blackburn Rovers and played for England at Under 16 level. After leaving Rovers he joined Shrewsbury in 2009. After being released by the Shrews he joined Preston on trial and signed a one-year deal. Despite him not appearing for the first team in 2010–11, he did enough to earn an additional year’s contract and broke into the first team after first choice goalkeeper Iain Turner broke a toe. He made his competitive debut for Preston in a League Cup game at Charlton on 13 September 2011, keeping a clean sheet, before going on to be on the winning side in five of his seven senior Preston appearances. The most notable match was a Football League Trophy game against the Shrimps which went to penalties, where he kept Preston in the cup by saving two consecutive spot kicks from Izak Reid and Kevin Ellison. LATE STRIKE DENIES SHRIMPS HISTORIC win

THE Shrimps kicked off life in Sky Bet League One with an opening day draw with Ipswich Town at Portman Road.

Cole Stockton netted twice, but goals from Scott Fraser and Macauley Bonne ensured a point for Paul Cook’s side. The hosts went close in the early stages with Lee Evans curing a free kick just wide and Joe Pigott heading a Fraser corner onto the roof of the Shrimps’ goal. But it was Morecambe who made the breakthrough in the 21st minute with a superb individual goal from Stockton who brushed off a string of challenges before firing past Vaclav Hladky. Ipswich continued to press as the half went on, but could not find a way through the Morecambe defence who were solid as the 45 minutes came to an end. The second-half started the way the first one ended, with

the home team on the attack. Kane Vincent-Young saw a shot well blocked by Liam Gibson before Town levelled just after the hour with a curling finish from Fraser. A onetwo between him and Chaplin saw the former receive the ball on the edge of the box, before unleashing an effort that curled past Kyle Letheren. But the visitors were not down and out and showed the resilience that had seen them promoted from Sky Bet League Two last season. A defensive mix-up at the back allowed the ever alert Stockton to nick the ball before rounding Hladky in the Ipswich goal, a real poacher’s effort from the 27-year-old. But it was heartbreak in stoppage time for the Shrimps as Macauley Bonne grabbed a stoppage-time equaliser. The debutant managed to use his strength before slotting the ball past the advancing Letheren, rescuing a point for the Tractor Boys.

Morecambe shock rovers in league cup MORECAMBE came from behind to earn a famous win at Blackburn in Round One of the Carabao Cup. Rovers dominated the first half and deservedly led through Tyrhys Dolan’s 21st minute header, but were pegged back early in the second half by Cole Stockton’s confident finish. And the League One new-boys secured victory over the 2002 winners six minutes from the end when Burnley loanee Adam Phillips emphatically converted a penalty after Dolan had brought down Greg Leigh in the box. Blackburn had the better of the first half and should have fired themselves into an early lead when Dolan found Chile international Ben Brereton Diaz, but the striker blazed over from close range. Brereton Diaz was later denied by Jokull Andresson, before Dolan broke the deadlock midway through the half, meeting a teasing Harry Pickering cross with an

unstoppable diving header. Andresson kept the deficit at one goal with a fingertip save to deny Ryan Nyambe. The second half was a totally different affair with the Shrimps bringing on Toumani Diagouraga and Liam Gibson in a change of system which quickly paid dividends. The Shrimps had the perfect start to the half in the 53rd minute when Stockton hammered home his third goal of the season with a superb finish from Jonah Ayunga’s cutback. The comeback was completed in the 84th minute when Phillips lashed a penalty into the roof of the net after Dolan’s foul on Leigh to send the visiting fans wild. Andresson pulled off a stunning save from Sam Gallagher in stoppage time to confirm the result.

Popular Shrimps' midfielder AARON WILDIG looks ahead to the season and looks forward to coming up against one of his former clubs in Shrewsbury Town.

AARON WILDIG

How has the pre season gone for you?

What are your memories of Wembley?

It’s been tough I must say. With getting to the Play-Off Finals last season we only really had a short break in the summer to get some rest so we were soon back into the swing of things.

I remember it was a really dull game. We started quite well in the first 20 minutes but then the manager changed the system and, although it proved to be the right thing to do, at the time I thought we lost some of our momentum and they were probably the better team for the rest of the game.

Last season was very definitely a career high for me and the win at Wembley was something I will never forget and always be proud of. But shortly after that Derek Adams left us which shows how quickly things can change in football. The new gaffer has come in and obviously has different ideas which we have to get accustomed to but I have to say it has been fantastic. It’s a different brand, a different style and a different style of coaching and I have learned a lot in the last few weeks and it has opened my eyes a great deal as I look towards a career in coaching myself one day. As well as being tough it’s been enjoyable. There are a lot of new players and there have been a lot of changes and it almost feels like I have signed for a new club in many ways because of all that. The club is vastly different to the one I signed for six years ago in terms of professionalism and we are definitely moving in the right direction. How would you describe last season? It was amazing and as I said before without doubt the best one in my career. I have been here a few years now and talked about the good squads that we have had on paper and never quite lived up to expectations. I said at this time last year that it looked like we had a good set of players but we had to do our talking on the pitch and we did that. We had good players who came together and our belief and momentum grew as the season progressed. We were pretty workman like at times but what we did do was find a way to win games like never before and we were a good football side that produced consistent performances and picked up points regularly.

In extra time we went back to the starting formation again and got the momentum back and I thought we always looked the team more likely to win from then on in. It was a game plan similar to the one we had followed throughout the season where we picked up a lot of 1-0 wins and that is what we did in the extra 30 minutes. It was great to celebrate with the Morecambe fans and we certainly enjoyed the night. It was definitely the highlight of my career. It was an unbelievable story really and even know I am not sure it has actually sunk in about how much we achieved last year and I am sure I will look back at the end of my time playing and realise just how big it was. For the minute though we have to put last season behind us, move forward and concentrate on life in League One and taking the club forward.

"THERE HAVE BEEN A LOT OF CHANGES AND A LOT OF NEW PLAYERS AND IT FEELS LIKE I HAVE SIGNED FOR A NEW CLUB.''

We also had a never say die attitude which came through at the end of the season, with two injury times goals to beat Salford and the late leveller at Forest Green and these are attributes that we will have to maintain this season. Morecambe vs Shrewsbury Town // Morecambe vs Rotherham United

We kick off the home campaign with a game against one of your former clubs in Shrewsbury Town. Do you have good memories there? I definitely do. Graham Turner took me to Shrewsbury which I always found a bit strange as I was a big Hereford fan as a youngster and he was such a big part of that club for so long. It was my first real taste of regular first team football. I was at Cardiff and was in and out of the first team there, and had a few injury problems but the move to Shrewsbury was good for me. It was a good club with a lot of good people working there and we had a bit of success. I first went there on loan when they were going for promotion in League Two and I played the last 10 games or so for them that season, and was in the side when they won promotion. There was about 10,000 there watching as we beat Dagenham in the last game of the season and I remember the pitch invasion after the game. What are your memories of League One? Looking back on it I think it is pretty similar to League Two in so much as there will be seven or eight teams who will have much bigger budgets than other clubs and be really strong. It’s obviously a really competitive league and it’s a tough league but I think we have a really good side. But we can’t really think too much about that and have to concentrate on ourselves and our own performances. I think our home form will be key and we have to do all we can to make ourselves hard to beat at the Mazuma Stadium like we did last season. We have struggled here in recent

years but last season was different. We had a great home record which is something we need to look to repeat this year. How good is it to have fans back again? It will be fantastic. Last year was brilliant obviously but how much better would it have been with fans here all season? I go back to the Salford game where we scored two goals in injury time and they had one disallowed. I still think now how electric the atmosphere would have been that night and how everyone would have celebrated, and spoken about the game for a long time. You look back at how everyone celebrated Barry Roche’s goal against Portsmouth a few years ago and the late winner against Yeovil years back, those are the sorts of scenes we all remember for ever in some circumstances. It will be so good to see everyone back today and I am sure it will make a massive difference to the occasion.

"THERE ARE SO MANY GOOD PLAYERS AT THE CLUB THIS YEAR THAT WHEN I DO GET GAME TIME I HAVE TO MAKE SURE I PERFORM TO THE BEST OF MY ABILITY.'' What are your personal aims for the season? Personally the main aim is to get as much game time as I can. It will be difficult because there are so many good players at the club this year, so when I do get game time I have to make sure I perform to the best of my ability to keep my place because everybody in this squad will be pushing for a first team place without a doubt. Looking back at last season I was happy with the contribution I made especially in terms of goals and assists. I got into double figures last season in terms of goals and the best before that was about four. If you spoke to our old manager Jim Bentley he will tell you that I have had plenty of chances to have about 50 goals for the club by now, but it was only really the end of the previous campaign and last season that I began to take more of the chances that came along. I scored about 15 goals in just over 50 games for Derek Adams and it’s hard to put my finger on exactly why that was.

right place at the tight time. Through experience and I am hoping I can do a bit more of that again this season. This season is definitely a step up for everyone isn’t it? It definitely is. Before you start you just need to have a look at the league table and see some of the clubs in League One. I played in League One earlier in my career and I have to say the league is stronger now in terms of the size of the clubs involved than it ever has been. Look at Ipswich last week and the fact they had more than 21,000 fans there and Sunderland who drew a crowd of more than 30,000. I don’t think the league has ever been stronger and it’s great to be involved in it. We all know the challenge ahead but we showed at Ipswich last Saturday that we are not just here to make the numbers up. We need to make sure we attack it and give it everything we have and see how we get on.

It was weird. It may be confidence, it may be that I was just better and getting into the right areas and being in the Morecambe vs Shrewsbury Town // Morecambe vs Rotherham United

INTRODUCING

JAMES MAIN LOOKS AT ROTHERHAM UNITED

T

HE Shrimps face Rotherham United on Tuesday night, after their return to League One following relegation from the Sky Bet Championship last season. The Millers will be hoping to bounce back this season and are 14/1 to win the league as opposed to the Shrimps’ 200/1. In the last decade they’ve been promoted from League One three times but haven’t been able to sustain themselves in the second tier. Their longest stay in the Championship in the last decade was three seasons. Last season it went down to the last day, and had they beaten Cardiff City the Millers would have stayed up on goal difference. They only won three times in their last 18 games though, and in addition to this they didn’t make it past the first stage of any cup competition they played in. Michael Smith was their top scorer with 10 goals in all competitions, and he remains with the club.

Warne has made five additions this season, which has included goalkeeper Josh Chapman from Sheffield United, and Northern Irish midfielder Shane Ferguson from Millwall. He has also signed 22-year-old defender Tolaji Bola from Arsenal, Rarmani Edmonds-Green from Huddersfield on loan and Hakeem Odoffin from Hamilton Academical. The Millers started their season in League One with a good 2-0 victory over Plymouth Argyle last Saturday as Warne’s quest to earn a third promotion from League One got off to a solid start. First-half goals from Freddie Ladapo, against his former club, and Ben Wiles set Rotherham on their way to a fairly routine three points. Tuesay night’s game is the first meeting between the two sides since 2016, when the Shrimps were 5-4 winners in the League Cup at the New York Stadium. Morecambe have won the last two games between the two sides.

At the time of writing, they were unbeaten in pre-season and had a training camp in Hungary. As part of this camp, they played III.Keruleti TVE from the third tier of Hungarian football and won 4-0. They also drew 1-1 with Newcastle United at the New York Stadium, and beat Parkgate 11-0 in their first game. Manager Paul Warne hasn’t been very busy in the transfer window at the time of writing. Of the eight players that have left the club, two have remained in the Championship. Matthew Olosunde rejected a new deal and joined Preston North End, while Matt Crooks left for Middlesbrough for an undisclosed fee. Morecambe vs Shrewsbury Town // Morecambe vs Rotherham United

PAUL WARNE I

OPPOSITION MANAGER

N his two spells as a player with the Millers, Warne accumulated over nine years, including back to back promotions to the Championship in his first spell, before playing a part in the campaign that resulted in a Play Off Final in 2010, where he was an unused sub. Between his spells in South Yorkshire, Warne played for Oldham Athletic and Yeovil, picking up the 2007/08 Supporters’ Player of the Year with the former. He was granted a testimonial in 2013 after more than 10 years service to the club over two-spells, and was a key member of Steve Evans’ backroom team that achieved back-to-back promotions to the Championship. Warne then served the club under the management of Neil Redfearn, Neil Warnock, Alan Stubbs and Kenny Jackett in his role as fitness coach before the latter’s departure saw him take caretaker charge of the first team in November 2016. In January of the following year, it was announced that Warne would continue as the interim boss until the end of the 2016/17 campaign, having picked up wins against the likes of Queens Park Rangers and Norwich City. On 5 April 2017, the club announced that Warne would become the first team manager on a permanent basis. During the close season of 2017, Warne, alongside assistant Richie Barker and Matt Hamshaw, made several changes to improve the culture behind the scenes. A pre-season tour of Austria laid the foundations for a wonderful first full season in management, as Warne guided the Millers to promotion after beating Shrews-

bury Town in the League One Play-off Final at Wembley. The 2018/19 season saw the Millers once again mount a valiant charge for Sky Bet Championship survival with Warne demonstrating that he had learned from his brief - but difficult - stint in the same division when he first took the managerial reins, but the Millers just fell short and were relegated back to the third tier. Charged once again with trying to conjure an immediate return to the Championship, the Millers were second in the league when the coronavirus pandemic saw the 2019/20 campaign to be curtailed. The outcome of the division for Sky Bet League One was decided on a Points Per Game basis, which resulted in Warne adding another promotion to his CV and giving him another crack at the Championship. Last season Warne’s men once again applied themselves brilliantly and his players gave Millers fans memories to treasure in the form of a historical first ever league double over near-neighbours Sheffield Wednesday, while wins over Derby County and Middlesbrough were also memorable. With plenty of clubs across the division rooting for the Millers to survive, it went down to the final game of the season, with Warne’s men needing a win at Cardiff City to stay in the division, whilst hoping the Rams didn’t beat Sheffield Wednesday. The Millers led the game convincingly until having their hearts broken by a Marlon Pack 88th minute equaliser, which would ultimately see them relegated in the cruellest of fashions.

THREE TO WATCH

VIKTOR JOHANSSON - GOALKEEPER

Swedish goalkeeper Viktor Johansson was snapped up by the Millers in September 2020, following the expiration of his contract with Premier League side Leicester City. The 21-year-old rose through the ranks at boyhood club Hammarby in his native Sweden and quickly built an impressive reputation, attracting the interest of Aston Villa. He spent four seasons at Villa Park before making his move across the

Midlands to join Leicester City’s development squad. His performances for Leicester caught the attention of Rotherham United boss Paul Warne, who moved to secure his services ahead of his side’s upcoming 2020/21 Sky Bet Championship campaign. The Swede’s maiden season in South Yorkshire saw him become a cult hero with the supporters, despite him having never played in front of them due to the coronavirus pandemic restrictions.

RICHARD WOOD - DEFENDER Wood started his career with local neighbours Sheffield Wednesday, making his first-team breakthrough at the back end of the 2002/2003 season. After almost 200 appearances for the Owls, Wood moved to fellow Championship club Coventry City initially on loan in 2009 before the move was made permanent in January 2010. Wood settled into the Coventry defence seamlessly, passing 100 appearances in a three-year stint with the Sky Blues. After relegation with Coventry, Wood was back in the second tier after securing a move to Charlton Athletic where he helped the Addicks to the FA Cup Quarter-Final. He joined the Millers in 2014 and famously netted a brace as the Millers beat Shrewsbury Town 2-1 after extra time at Wembley in the Play-Off Final to earn promotion back to the Championship. He made 32 appearances in all in 2020/21.

FREDDIE LADAPO - STRIKER Rotherham United broke their record transfer fee to land 2018/19 summer signing Freddie Ladapo from Plymouth Argyle. The 26-year-old enjoyed a productive spell in front of goal in League One in the season prior to his arrival at AESSEAL New York Stadium, despite Argyle’s relegation – netting 19 times in all competitions. After leaving Colchester United early in his career, the Lagos-born hitman starred for the likes of Kidderminster

and Margate where he attracted interest from a host of clubs. He earned a big move to Crystal Palace in 2016, and while at Selhurst Park he earned further experience with loan spells at Oldham and Shrewsbury. A permanent move to Southend in 2018 was followed by a move to Plymouth, where his career took off as he bagged a hatful of goals despite the Pilgrims being relegated on the final day of the season.

MICHAEL IHIEKWE- 20

WES HARDING - 2

The young goalkeeper agreed a deal at AESSEAL New York Stadium until the summer of 2022 with an option of a further year, subject to EFL and FA ratification.

Liverpool-born defender Ihiekwe was Paul Warne’s first summer recruit ahead of the 2017/18 campaign, agreeing a two year deal.

Harding made his move from Birmingham City in August 2020.

The 18-year-old has been training with the goalkeeping department at Roundwood and has now joined to complete the counting among the goalkeeping ranks ahead of the 2021/22 campaign. The Worksop born operator came through the Academy system with South Yorkshire neighbours Sheffield United.

The centre back lists Wolverhampton Wanderers and Cheltenham Town on his resume as previous employers and he spent time in the Liverpool Academy set up as youngster. He was a mainstay during the 2019/20 promotion campaign, making 38 appearances in all competitions, netting four goals.

DANIEL BARLASER - 8

BEN WILES - 8

Rotherham confirmed the permanent signing of midfielder Daniel Barlaser from Newcastle United in October 2020, following a successful loan spell.

Academy graduate Ben has been a mainstay in the Millers midfield since his break-through campaign in 2018/19.

The Gateshead-born player impressed all during his temporary stay in South Yorkshire, during which he made 35 appearances and helped the club win promotion back to the Sky Bet Championship at the first time of asking. Barlaser caught the eye with his extensive range of passing and dead ball skills.

Wiles, who has impressed the first-team management with his development since making the stepup from the club’s youth set-up, will remain with the Millers until 2023, after being rewarded with fresh terms in August 2020. The midfielder was given his first professional contract in 2017, making his senior debut in the Leasing.com Trophy clash against Chesterfield in the 2017/18 season.

The 23-yearold, who is predominantly a right-back but can operate across the back four if required, penned a three-year-deal to keep him at United until 2023. Despite still being in the relative infancy of his professional career, Harding arrived in South Yorkshire having represented Blues over 50 times in England’s second tier. The Leicester-born defender joined Birmingham’s academy aged 16 in 2012 and progressed through the Under-18s and Under-23s sides. CHIEDOZIE OGBENE - 11 Paul Warne signed pacy winger Ogbene in August 2019, with the 22-year-old penning a threeyear deal after joining from Brentford for an undisclosed fee. Born in Nigeria, Ogbene then moved to Ireland with his family aged eight. After representing Everton as a youth player, he signed for Cork City in August 2015 and he spent 18 months there, winning the FAI Senior Challenge Cup in 2016. Limerick was his next destination and he was an ever-present during their 2017 League of Ireland Premier Division campaign, alerting interest from Brentford.

MICKEL MILLER - 14

JAMIE LYNDSAY - 16

SHANE FERGUSON - 17

London-born attacker Mickel Miller arrived at Rotherham in the summer of 2020, becoming Paul Warne’s first signing of the 2020-21 season.

The Millers paid an undisclosed fee to secure the midfielder's services from Scottish outfit Ross County, with his arrival bolstering the midfield ranks at AESSEAL New York Stadium.

The 24-year-old was snapped up following the expiration of his deal north of the border with Scottish outfit Hamilton Academicals. Miller impressed with the Accies for whom he turned out 68 times in all competitions after signing in 2018. He is most commonly deployed as a winger but is also capable of operating in central attacking areas, with a keen eye for goal, evidenced by him finishing as Hamilton’s leading goalscorer in the 2018/19 campaign. Miller earned his stripes in non-league with Carshalton Athletic before making the switch to Hamilton.

The 23-year-old was a key figure during Ross County's title-winning Scottish Championship campaign and he made a total of 48 appearances in all competitions for the Staggies, scoring nine goals.

Shane Ferguson was snapped up by the Millers boss following the expiration of his contract with Sky Bet Championship side Millwall, where he made over 200 appearances in Lions’ colours during a six year spell at The New Den.

JOSHUA KAYODE - 19

MICHAEL SMITH - 24

KIEREN SADLIER - 7

Forward Joshua Kayode has worked his way up through the Academy ranks, earning himself a long-term contract in April 2021 following a series of impressive loan spells away from AESSEAL New York Stadium.

Paul Warne's first signing of the 2018 January transfer window saw striker Michael Smith joined the Millers from Bury.

Kieran arrived at AESSEAL in August 2020 with the exciting attacker signing a two-year-deal to keep him with the Millers until 2022.

Kayode enjoyed a short stint with Chesterfield before furthering his education in the North East in the shape of a productive loan spell with Gateshead in 2019. The striker then joined Carlisle United on loan in January 2020 and netted thee goals in his five League Two outings, before the Covid-19 pandemic saw the season curtailed.

Having started his career at Celtic as a youth player, he represented the development side on numerous occasions, before spending time on loan at Dumbarton, Greenock Morton and Ross County. He then made his move to Victoria Park permanent in June 2018.

The 26-year-old began his footballing journey with the decorated Wallsend Boys Club before joining Darlington in 2010. A stint at Charlton followed where he found game time limited making loan switches to Accrington, Newport, Colchester and Wimbledon whilst contracted at The Valley. In 2014 he moved to Swindon Town for a six-figure fee which proved to be a successful switch. scored 26 goals from 61 starts in all competitions.

Following loan spells with Birmingham City and north of the border with Glasgow Rangers, Ferguson joined the Londoners from Newcastle United, initially in a loan switch in August 2015, before making the move permanent in In January the following year. On the international stage, Ferguson has 47 caps for Northern Ireland, scoring once for his country and was named in the Green and White Army’s squad for their Euro 2016 clash with Poland in Nice.

TREVOR PHILLIPS

Long-serving wing-half Danny Williams holds Rotherham United’s appearance record. Signing professional at Millmoor in October 1942, he starred as Rotherham narrowly missed promotion three years running and won the Third Division (North) title in 1950-51. ROTHERHAM 4 MORECAMBE 5 (AET) August 9th, 2016

A Jack Dunn hat-trick helped Morecambe past Rotherham after extra time in an EFL Cup firstround thriller. The Shrimps started the game superbly and took the lead after just six minutes through Cole Stockton with a stunning shot that flew past Lewis Price in the home goal. Rotherham then forced a number of half chances with young striker Jerry Yates and midfielder Richie Smallwood both dragging shots wide, but the half ended with the Shrimps on top as Tom Barkhuizen had two golden chances to extend Morecambe’s lead but saw two efforts well saved by Price. The Shrimps started the second half sharply with Mullin shooting wide and Stockton missing a golden opportunity to double their lead when he missed an open goal from eight yards out. He was made to pay for his miss a few moments later as Rotherham levelled from a soft penalty, when Greg Halford scored from the spot after he had been fouled by Ryan Edwards. The goal gave the home fans a lift but they were silenced again on 68 minutes when substitute Dunn put the Shrimps ahead for the second time with a superb firsttime finish from a left-wing cross. The Shrimps looked good value for the lead but were undone by two goals in two minutes. Rotherham levelled on 82 minutes when Tom Thorpe got in behind Luke Conlan on the right and pulled the ball back for Jerry Yates to beat Roche with a low shot from the edge of the area. The turnaround was complete when Anthony Forde beat Roche from a tight angle a minute later to put his side

ahead for the first time in the match. The Shrimps fought back however and Dunn was on the scoresheet again in injury time when he was brought down in the box and beat Price from 12 yards to set up extra-time after a pulsating 90 minutes. After a goalless first period the Shrimps then took the lead again on 113 minutes when Kevin Ellison scored from close range. The Liverpool loanee then secured his hat-trick with a top-quality finish with one minute to go after being found by Ellison to make it 5-3. Yates pulled another one back for the home side with a close range finish but the Shrimps held on to win on another memorable cup night for Jim Bentley’s side. AUGUST 17th, 2014

ON THIS DAY

MORECAMBE 0 CHELTENHAM TOWN 0

MORECAMBE and Cheltenham shared the spoils in a goalless League Two draw at the Globe Arena. A game that lacked skill and inspiration saw both sides struggle to create chances, with neither goalkeeper really troubled. The game started briskly with Luke Varney heading a Sean Long cross straight at Barry Roche from eight yards out, before a long period of inactivity. Lewis Alessandra put in a cross from the right that was just too far ahead of Kevin Ellison before Steven Old headed an Andrew Tutte corner well wide before a frantic final two minutes of the half. With time running out Cheltenham had a golden chance to open the scoring when the ball broke free to Gavin Reilly at the far post after the home defence failed to deal with Ben Tozer’s long throw but he failed to find the target. One minute later it was Morecambe’s turn to threaten with Alessandra hitting the crossbar from 12 yards after the home side’s best move of the game. The second half started with Roche saving smartly from a Reilly cross that was deflected goalwards, but from there the best chance fell to Morecambe’s Cole Stockton, who volleyed a John O’Sullivan cross just over from the edge of the box. Cheltenham forced a string of late corners with Conor Thomas seeing a volley land on the roof of the Morecambe net before an injury-time save from Scott Flinders from Andrew Tutte’s long range strike.

Morecambe: Roche, Buxton, Lavelle, Old, Tanner (Cranston 64), Kenyon (Sutton 70), Tutte, O’Sullivan, Alessandra, Ellison (Miller 64), Stockton. Subs not used: Halstead, Brewitt, Oates, Brownsword. CONNECTIONS BEN PRINGLE The Shrimps signed midfielder Ben Pringle for the 2020-21 season following his release by Gillingham. The 33-year-old was a regular in Steve Evans’ matchday squads but played just 11 games after moving to the League One club in September 2019 after joining up again with his former Millers’ manager. Pringle’s goals and assists during the 2013–14 season helped Rotherham reach the League One Play Off Final which they won 4-3 on penalties. In June 2015 he earned a move to Fulham before moving to Preston in 2016 on a three year deal. His time at Deepdale didn’t really work out and after loan spells with Grimsby and Tranmere he was released and joined the Gills. Ben was releasd by the Shrimps in the summer and last week signed for Altrincham.

CHRIS HOLROYD

Holroyd started his football career at Crewe Alexandra, progressing through the club’s youth system. He subsequently joined then league club Chester City for the third year of his scholarship, and signed professional terms in 2006. After spells with Brighton, Rotherham and Preston, he joined Macclesfield Town on loan until January 2013. On returning to his parent club, his contract was cancelled by mutual consent. He signed for Morecambe on a free transfer in January 2013 but never really made the grade at the Globe and rejoined Macclesfield at the end of the season, playing more than 140 games for the Silkmen. From there he joined Wrexham, Chorley, Stalybridge and Warrington Town.

DAVE ARTELL During an 18-year playing career current Crewe boss Artell made 495 first team appearances for 11 clubs including Morecambe and Rotherham. He won back to back promotions at his home town club Rotherham to reach the Championship and he also had spells with the likes of Shrewsbury, Chester, Mansfield and Morecambe where he was a popular central defensive partner to Jim Bentley. Towards the end of his playing career, Artell was presented with the opportunity to play International football for Gibraltar and he faced the then World Champions Germany in a European Championship qualifying game. Artell made seven appearances for Gibraltar before his retirement from playing. Since hanging uphis boots he has had success as a manager, winning promotion with Crewe from League 2.

CLUB HISTORIAN LAWRENCE BLAND LOOKS AT THE 1924/25 SEASON

T

After two years with Southport, he joined Chesterfield in September 1923 and made 13 appearances in his only season.

After a steady 1923/24 season further good players arrived to join Morecambe for the Lancashire Combination season.

He then joined Morecambe in August 1924, adding extra quality to a side which enjoyed success in the 1920s.

These players included inside-right John Hosker from Accrington Stanley, centre-forward Eugene O’Doherty (ex-Blackpool and Walsall), inside-left Arthur Brown from Lancaster Town and outside-left C Lomax, while Jack Sloane returned in goals.

He moved to Darwen in 1928/29 before passing away in Preston on July 20, 1971.

HIS week club historian, Lawrence Bland, looks at when Morecambe won their first silverware in the 1924/25 season.

Another of the players was former Preston North End, Southport and Chesterfield right-back Bill Greatorex. Born in Preston on January 3, 1895, William Henry Alphonse Greatorex started with Preston Winckley in 1914, before serving with the Royal Horse Artillery in World War One on the Somme. On demob, he signed amateur forms with North End in August 1919 and professionally in November 1919. He spent two seasons at Deepdale from 1919-21, making more than 20 appearances before moving to Southport for £75 in September 1921.

Greatorex was part of a good Morecambe side, which went on to win the Lancashire Combination championship in his first season. They had trailed Rochdale Reserves for most of the season but they dropped a point in their final game. Facing Barnoldswick Town in their last game, Morecambe won 4-0 at home with goals from O’Doherty (2), Farnworth and Gradwell to lift the title. The club again reached the final of the Combination Cup, but lost, this time 1-0 at home to Chorley on April 27. The Combination title was the start of a successful period with Lancashire Junior Cup wins in 1925/26 and 1926/27, as well as Combination Cup victory in 1926/27.

EX-FILES

We catch up with some of our former players on their movements over the summer

PAUL MULLIN - WREXHAM

Forward Paul Mullin joined Wrexham after he turned down a new contract with Cambridge United.

Mullin scored 34 goals in 50 games for Cambridge last season as they secured promotion to League One. The 26-year-old had joined Cambridge from Tranmere Rovers last summer following a loan spell at the club in the second half of the 2019-20 campaign. “The ambition of the club attracted me

here,” Mullin said of his Wreham move. “Rob McElhenney (Wrexham co-owner) gave me a call and originally I wasn’t too sure about making the move. “But once he outlined the plans for the club, and the plans for me in the future, it was something I really wanted to be a part of and something that just excited me that much that I had to come. “He really sold the club to me. What they have planned for the club is magnificent and something I want to be a part of.”

ALEX KENYON - SCUNTHORPE Alex Kenyon signed a one-year contract at Scunthorpe in the summr after eight years with the Shrimps. Talking about his move, Kenyon said: “As soon as the gaffer called me, I was interested and it sounded like something that would be fantastic for me and hopefully I can show my qualities this season.’’ He added: “I had been at Morecambe for eight years and it felt hard to leave. To go to Wembley and win in the play-off final was unbelievable, and probably the best day of my life so far, but I’m looking forward to the challenge here and the season ahead. There were a lot of highs and lows but I enjoyed my time there and it’s a club I will always look out for.’’

LEIF DAVIS - BOURNEMOUTH

Bournemouth have signed former Shrimps’ Academy youngster Leif Davis on a season-long loan from Leeds with a view to a permanent move. Davis, 21, can operate as a left-back or central defender and has made nine Premier League appearances for Leeds - eight of them as a substitute. The loan deal includes an option for the Cherries to buy him. “I’m delighted to be here and I want to try and help the club get back to the Premier League because that’s where they belong,” he said.

Born in Newcastle, Davis started his career with Wallsend Boys’ Club, whose graduates include former England internationals Alan Shearer, Michael Carrick, Fraser Forster and Peter Beardsley. In June 2016, he signed a two-year scholarship with Morecambe and trained regularly with the first team at the then-League Two club. Davis joined Leeds for an undisclosed fee in July 2018 – just days after Bielsa had taken charge – and penned a threeyear contract at Elland Road.

A BUSY START TO THE SUMMER

M

ORECAMBE Community Sports has certainly had a busy start to the summer holidays.

The team has been out delivering football in the community with the soccer school activities, open to children of all footballing ability aged five to 14 years.

Mossgate Soccer School We are currently delivering our soccer school at Mossgate Sports Centre in Heysham throughout the holidays, five days a week, Monday to Friday. It has been great to see so many children wanting to keep active this summer and enjoy some footballing fun alongside their friends! Each day children have been given a theme by their coaches for what they will be working on. They have then taken part in a range of skill based activities and games. For example, shooting, dribbling and ball control, passing and team working skills have been some themes that children have focused on in their groups. Wednesdays have included the special penalty shoot out competition, the winner of this being awarded with a trophy. On a Friday we have had the World Cup competition, with all children getting a medal either bronze, silver or gold dependant on how they do.

Ingleton Football Camp During the last week of July, the team spent five days at Ingleton Cricket club to do the Craven soccer school for five days. We have had a long existing sports partnership with the Craven district. This soccer school gives children from the area the chance to participate in some footballing fun and build on their skills through the delivery of activities and games. Overall it was great to see good numbers for each of the days and to be able to deliver the sessions to children that have enthusiasm and passion to want to learn more about football; with a large number of players from the Craven Wanderers teams. As usual, we held the penalty shoot out and world cup competitions and on the last day all children received a medal. Awards for sportsperson and player of the week were also given. We would like to thank the team at Craven Wanderers for assisting with the smooth running of the soccer school each day and we hope to see some of the youngsters who attended at the Mazuma Stadium this season!

There are limited spaces remaining for week four of the soccer school, running Monday 23rd August to Friday 27th, 10am to 3pm each day at Mossgate Sports Centre in Heysham. It is priced at £55 for the full five days, if you would like more details then email: admin@mfccommunitysports.com

H

SHRIMPS TRUST

ELLO from everyone at the Shrimps Trust, it’s great to be back! And for not just any season the club’s first ever in League One.

Last season’s promotion success was truly historic, with the only shame being the absence of fans to witness all those great victories. Imagine THAT Salford game with fans? (Freez and Glen did a great job of creating atmosphere over the microphone though!) Fortunately, we were able to enjoy a couple of days out in the play-offs - returning to the Mazuma for the semi-final against Tranmere before heading to Wembley to see the team seal that historic promotion.

Danson to the Legends Wall, and we are on hand to assist the club with the Raise the Roof campaign. It’s great to see that the club and fans have engaged with this over the new season ticket scheme. There are also plans for providing coach travel to selected away games, as well as producing more frequent podcasts. Please do keep an eye on our social media channels or emails for any further updates from us throughout the season. We will also aim to have a presence both before and after home matches in the Think Interiors JB’s Bar. Let’s all enjoy the season!

I’m sure many of you will be aware the club’s three year plan to become sustainable in League One. That has been accelerated thanks to Carlos Mendes Gomes’s penalty, and it seems the club are grabbing the bull by the horns with their proactive and forward thinking recruitment this summer, both on the player and the management front. With Derek Adams’ departure just days after the Wembley euphoria, the board swiftly moved to bring in Stephen Robinson. As much as Adams leaving was a great shame, the appointment of Robinson looks to be a positive one. It will be great to welcome him for his first competitive game at the Mazuma today. On the Trust front, we will be actioning plans to add Dickie

Before the end of July we managed AGAIN to break our RECORD membership level. We now have more than 500 Shrimps Trust Members and are always looking for more. If you haven’t already, join today: https://shrimpstrust.co.uk/membership/membership-form

ON THE ROAD

GILLINGHAM v MORECAMBE PRIESTFIELD, SATURDAY, AUGUST 21st, 2021

T

HE Shrimps travel to Gillingham next Saturday to face Steve Evans’ side for the first time since November 2012.

Away fans are mostly housed on one side of the Brian Moore Stand (on the Medway Stand side) where around 1,500 supporters can be accommodated. This stand is of a temporary nature, so be prepared to meet a wall of scaffolding when you walk through the turnstiles. Although home and away fans have their own turnstile entrances, once inside it is surprising that both sets of fans are able to freely mingle behind the Brian Moore Stand. This end is uncovered, so be prepared to get wet (although the Club does hand out free rain macs if the heavens open) and it is quite difficult to really create some atmosphere from this area. A better bet may be to head for one of the 200 covered seats that are made available to visiting supporters in the Gordon Road Stand. Unlike most temporary stands though the facilities are surprisingly good, being of a permanent nature behind the structure.

Directions

Gillingham, going straight across two roundabouts. At the third roundabout turn left onto the A2 towards Gillingham town centre. At the traffic light junction with the A231, turn right into Nelson Road and passing the small bus station take a right turn into Gillingham Road, the ground is down on your right.

Car parking There is a residents-only parking scheme in operation around Priestfield Stadium, so if you want to street park, this will mean driving a bit further away to do so. There is also a cheap pay and display car park (£2.50 for four hours) on Railway Street near Gillingham station, which is less than 10 minutes walk from the ground and parking at the Our Lady of Gillingham Church (Ingram Road, Gillingham ME7 1YL). £3.

Postcode ME7 4DD

Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.

That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.
