Investing In Our Mission

VOLUME 2, ISSUE 1

Since 1807, when Moravian Theological Seminary was founded, many individuals have invested in the mission and activities of the institution by giving time, energy, prayers, and funds, ensuring the vitality and success of the Seminary for years to come. Enthusiastic alumni have spent time encouraging prospective students to contact the enrollment office. Members of the MTS community have donated their talents to craft meaningful decor items within the Bahnson Center. Pastors have invited students visiting home for the holidays to share their seminary experience with the congregation. Financial gifts have supported operating budgets, building programs, and the endowment. At this time of year, when holiday festivities fill every square of the calendar, MTS pauses to reflect on the rich history behind the campaigns, the endowment, and some of the donors who have supported the mission of the Seminary. While every expression of gratitude cannot be shared in the limited space of a newsletter, MTS is thankful for each and every gift of support and investment in the work of the faculty, staff, and students.

When It All Began One of the oldest stories of giving on record at the Seminary is about the original endowment establishment: Godfrey Haga was born in Germany in 1747 and migrated to America in 1766, apprenticed to a tailor in Philadelphia. As the American Revolution

heated up, Mr. Haga moved his work to Bucks and Northampton Counties in Pennsylvania. After the war, he returned to Philadelphia where he began a successful import and trade business with Germany, the West Indies and South America. He became an active member of the Moravian Church and served in the Pennsylvania Legislature. At his death, his very large estate was bequeathed to the Moravian Church (actually, to the Society for Propagating the Gospel) and developed a trust of $20,000 for the Theological Seminary. The money became available in 1825, helping to assure the survival of the struggling Seminary at that critical time. Γ’€”From Twentieth Century Moravian College Challenge and Response, by John R. Weinlick, 1977, page 4 As generous as that gift was, additional gifts to the endowment were not added until 1859, but by the centennial in 1907, the endowment had grown to $123,000 through steady, small gifts. In the 1930Γ’€™s there was an appeal for funds to offset the depreciation of the endowment during the Depression and as World War II approached, the endowment had grown to $500,000.

Campaigns of Note

Throughout institutional history, special campaigns have also been initiated to improve the facilities on campus. Some examples included a campaign throughout the Moravian Church for a refectory and the first phase of Comenius Hall, beginning in 1891.

The Common Thread

Several years later, there was a special appeal to repair and replace that same Comenius Hall after the building burned down in the Halloween fire of 1913. Additional campaigns in 1919 and 1928 funded the science building and a new dormitory.

In 1990, Rev. Dr. Henry May Jr. established the Zeisberger Lectures on Evangelism, with the first lecture in Central Moravian Church. These lectures honor the work of David Zeisberger, the Moravian β€œApostle to the Indians.” One year later, the Arthur Vining Davis Foundation established an endowment to be used, β€œto bring Moravians and others together for symposia, lectures, conferences, etc.” The Moses Lectures, established in 1995 to honor Bishop Walter Vivian Moses, were a product of this endowment. The latest addition to the Seminary’s lectureship offerings occured in 2010, when Bruce Marold ’12 established the Irene E. Marold Memorial Lectures in the memory of his late mother.

The Sesquicentennial Campaign in 1957 was a very ambitious drive funding two additional chairs at the Seminary, additional buildings, and the endowmentβ€”all helping to establish the Seminary as an independent theological school, connected to the under-graduate college. In the 70’s, a generous gift from Paul and Vangie Smith initiated the building of Bahnson Centerβ€”that history was recounted in The Common Thread 1.2. A decade later, the Heart of the Church campaign provided for Seminary housing and the office of the chaplain.

Developing Development Today’s supporters of the Seminary have relationships with the staff in the Office of Development, which was established in the 1980’s to appoint officers to work with the Seminary constituency. In the 1990’s the Alumni Board began to play an important role in fund development by instituting the phonathon and the Annual Fund which continues to be used to support the operating budget. The Alumni Office and development staff continue to work together to build relationships with all who invest in the mission of Moravian Theological Seminary.

Most recently, the Seminary completed the Mission That Matters campaign, bringing a new chair to the faculty, funding student scholarships, and making major improvements to the Bahnson Center.

Public Lectureships Through the generosity of the community, Moravian Theological Seminary is blessed to be able to offer several endowed or sponsored lectures each year, sharing the history of numerous donors with all who attend the programs. In the 50’s, brothers Herbert, Christian, and Bruce Weber initiated an endowment to honor their parents, Rev. Christian O. and Dorothy Pfohl Weber. The Weber Lectures launched the beginning of the robust continuing education program. Seminary Dean Vernon Couillard, along with his wife Cynthia, established a memorial fund in the early 1960’s to honor their deceased son and provide income toward the sponsorship of lectures in Christian doctrine. In 1988, Cynthia increased this fund to memorialize her husband.

Your investment in me is an investment in the Lord’s work… Thank you very much. β€”Bevon White, MATS student
