ALAN S. CRANDALL, MD “Every little bit you can do to help can make a big difference in the long run. I really believe that.” —Alan S. Crandall, MD

 Dr. Alan S. Crandall was a brilliant, caring surgeon who dedicated his many talents to helping others, training young surgeons, and providing eye care outreach in Utah and around the world. Over his 39 years at the John A. Moran Eye Center, his care and consideration for his patients and colleagues shaped a culture of family. Dr. Crandall trained hundreds of surgeons and performed countless charitable surgeries to restore sight in Utah, on the Navajo Nation, and in more than 20 countries worldwide. To honor his work, the Moran Eye Center is establishing The Alan S. Crandall, MD, Endowment in Global Outreach for Patient Care, Teaching, and Training. The aim is to raise at least $2 million in sustainable funds that will be directed towards patient care for the underserved, teaching and training ophthalmologists, and support for Moran’s Global Outreach Division. 4

The Moran Eye Center’s Global Outreach Division The Global Outreach Division works to solve the global problem of preventable blindness. Moran physicians, nurses, and medical personnel have volunteered their time in more than 25 countries, providing cataract surgeries and vision screenings while training local ophthalmologists and healthcare workers to increase access to care. The outreach team also provides charitable eye care locally, treating under-resourced populations in Utah and the Navajo Nation. Funded solely by donors, the Global Outreach Division in a typical year provides about 1,000 sight-restoring surgeries, 5,000 eye exams, and 2,000 free pairs of eyeglasses while training 30 international physicians and nurses; some 120 volunteers perform 12,500 service hours.

MISSION STATEMENT: The Moran Global Outreach Division strives to establish and support sustainable eye care solutions that empower individuals and underserved communities worldwide. OUR WORK IS FOCUSED ON:

8

1. Strategic partnerships 2. Custom training programs 3. Quality care 4. Research 5. Health equity advocacy
