Welcome to Moranbah BBQ Movie Night

From the Editor

Spring is here and Moranbah is coming alive. Haven’t we been lucky with all the events and activities happening in our little town. Flowers are starting to blossom and the smiles are back to our faces. We braved the “not so cold” winter and can now enjoy warm weather, holidays and during this time, take some time for you. Remember it is also a great time to declutter. “The Spring Clean” as they say. We have included some tips on spring cleaning for all our Moranbah families on page 15. This year has been hard for some families finanical as well as our local businesses, it is important to support the locals so our town can continue to grow and keep smiling. Happy Spring everyone!

Tai Chi Recently Moranbah & District Support Services - MDSS and Hinterland Community Care brought a Tai Chi instructor to Moranbah to celebrate Seniors Week. All the guests were ecstatic with the event and commented on how easy and relaxing the session was. Chris MacFarlan from MDSS and Kim Lowe from HHC, along with BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance BMA coordinated the tranquil event. As the session began the staff of BMA, MDSS and HCC happily joined in with the lesson releasing all stresses before heading back to work to complete their day.

Healthy Habits with Tai chi Tai Chi helps reduce stress and anxiety and it also helps increase flexibility and balance. Tai chi is also low impact and has minimal stress on muscles and joints making it generally safe for all ages and fitness levels. The guests focused on simple exercises that could be done in the comfort of their own home then enjoyed morning tea while chatting about their graceful morning adventure. MDSS and HCC planned a busy week for the Seniors of Moranbah and surrounding areas with Meditation, Indian Head Massage, Crafternoon Tea, Reiki, and worked along Isaac Regional Council the 150th Birthday Celebration in Clermont to coordinate seniors luncheon. The activities were enjoyed by all and more are being planned for next year.

Relaxing Art of Reiki

Reiki is an ancient laying-on of hands healing technique that uses the life force energy to heal, balancing the subtle energies within our bodies. Reiki addresses physical, emotional, mental and spiritual imbalances. This healing art is an effective delivery system. The Reiki practitioner serves as a vessel that supplies healing energies where they are most needed. Reiki’s ki-energies flow out of the practitioner’s body through the palms of the hands while they are touching the recipient’s body. To find out more about Reiki and Meditation

Meditation Classes are held in Moranbah every Monday at 7pm, Girl Guides Hut. Costing $10. All welcome

Another First for Moranbah Dental

So why did we come? It has always been my philosophy to offer fantastic dental treatment at prices that everyone can afford. I have been a dentist for more years than I would admit and it has always bothered me that small mining towns do not always have the access to the same kind of treatment that they would get in a big city. The fantastic Kim Dodds our other resident dentist has worked and lived here for over 9 years and joins our practice because she also shares the same theory as us. We are the first dental practice in the history of Moranbah and the surrounding areas to offer highly qualified dental specialists! So before you say ‘wow that’s great dentistry Andrew!’ I will try to explain the significance briefly. We are committed to finding the best dental specialists in:• Orthodontics (braces), • Endodontics (root canals fillings) • Periodontics (gums and implants) • Child therapist (treatment of children under 17 and under) • Prosthetist/Technician (fixed and removable appliances - such as dentures) We are hoping to be able to bring in an • Oral surgeon (for tricky wisdom teeth) and sedation treatment. Big deal! I hear you saying but it means that both children and their parents

“Another first for Moranbah Dental” We came to Moranbah to re-establish dental services in October of last year and before we had even officially opened and finished unpacking we were swamped with people seeking treatment. It was a very interesting few weeks until we got everything sorted as we didn’t even have a phone line in at this stage! It was a bit of a change from Brisbane but a welcome one. Everyone is so friendly here. I have also just bought a house here so I’m now an officially permanent resident in Moranbah! will not need to make a number of trips to Mackay to see a qualified Orthodontist for braces, instead they can see Dr Michael Whyte here who offers better rebates from health funds than dentist who do braces. After all if you had to choose between a qualified pilot or someone who had taken a few lessons which would you pick? Especially if the price’s are similar?? Currently you can’t even drive to Mackay to have endodontic treatment. You have to get on a plane to Brisbane or another city. Both cost you time and money before you have even started the treatment. This really is big news especially if you have ever experienced the pain that is caused by a failing root in a tooth.

finding the best of the best. There have been a few enquiries about same day crowns recently and although they do exist the material they are made from is a lower quality material than lab produced crowns. You usually get charged the same price as well. Plus all our lab produced crowns come with a 10 years warranty!

We are committed to Moranbah and the surrounding areas

We will provide high quality dentistry at a fair price, we have brought you some of the finest dental practitioners in Queensland and we would like to keep doing this for years to come but in order to do this we need to get this Another first is the hard tissue laser message out there! So show your for fillings and similar procedures support and tell family, friends, work which is great in many situations as it mates in fact anyone who you think means no injections and no would appreciate this local service. drilling either. Hottest summer Warning to the Community Photo: Shane Knuth and Jacqui Hiron

Moranbah East State School P&C are sending a warning to all in the community that it has been reported that this year may be our hottest on record. The concerned parents of the well known school asked Shane Knuth, our member for Dalrymple, to come along and review the air conditioners in the school because many children were sent home due to heat exhaustion in the first few months at the beginning of the year. The P&C were so concerned by the number of children suffering from nose bleeds, headaches, nausea and lack of energy, that they personally wrote letters to Shane Knuth’s office to have something done about this issue. Shane and the Moranbah East State School P&C are now working together to have

this problem reviewed and offer a cooler environment for the children. “The Breeze Air units that are installed are just not working well enough and when turned on the teachers must yell to be heard by a class of heat exhausted children. It is an endless battle that we have to deal with living in a rural area.” said P&C President. The P&C would like to warn everyone in Moranbah about the heat reports this summer, watch your children very carefully for signs of heat stroke especially children with health problems. Make sure your children drink plenty of water this summer, wear a hat and stay out of the sun as much as possible.

What to look for Individuals with heat exhaustion tend to have symptoms such as:

World Class The Moranbah East State School Garden Party has

made a huge impression on 450 lucky ladies who attended the grand event this year. The Committee was overwhelmed by the response from local businesses and businesses from out of town to help put together one of the greatest afternoons booked on every woman’s calendar. Moranbah ladies were so excited about the event that they lined up from 5.30am in the morning on ticket sales day to get a ticket to make sure they would be a part of an afternoon of world class fashions, stunning prizes, fun games, giggles with friends and lots of dancing. Create-A-Sign help set the scene with a stunning backdrop of the New York City skyline and guests entered the event on red carpet. The Garden Party has become so popular with the ladies in Moranbah due to its safe environment, outstanding entertainment and making everyone feel special and beauitful. It is hard to believe that this small country town on this one day has the class and style of the Melbourne Cup Races. The entertainment was top class as well with the ladies listening to Sophie Phillis from “the Voice” along side local singers Rob Cookson and Klancie Keough. Not to stop there, last year for The Garden Party’s 10 year anniversary the guests rocked along with the Australian Band Busby Marou. The committee always try to do something exciting for its guests and this year as the lucky Door Prize winner, Kylie Chandler was treated to a sunset flight over Moranbah on the day with the helicopter landing on the school oval thanks to The Hornery Group. who happily accepted the request from the School and donated their time. Everyone was green with envy as they watched the lucky winner fly over the event. The Mystery prizes were so incredible with the total valued at $10,000, tickets were bought in bulk to win one of the eight gifts. The food was elegant thanks to Morris Corp, who donated all the catering to this amazing event, their community spirit is to be commended. Also the team from Dental Care Xtra brought “New York Smile Competition” to the Garden Party this year with the major winner receiving a total makeover, valued at $1500. The Fashions on the Green were brought to the event by famously known Mackenzie Mode. Landscaped, high quality parkland is scattered throughout Bushlark Grove to provide shared green space and to foster a sense of community. Buyers can choose from a range of homes designed by carefully selected builder partners or they can bring their own builder and design a dream home on a block of land.

Bushlark Grove achieved a first for the region by receiving the National EnviroDevelopment certification by the Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA) for outstanding environmentally sustainable design. National EnviroDevelopment Manager Kirsty Chessher-Brown said Bushlark Grove was a triumph for both ecological sustainability and housing affordability and sets an excellent example for other housingstressed boom towns. “Environmentally sustainable design makes good sense in terms of cost savings, and the residents of Bushlark Grove will reap the benefits of cleverly designed, energy efficient homes well into the future.”

As a result of sustainable design, homes within Bushlark Grove are calculated to use 50 percent less energy than the average home. Dental decay can happen at any age so good oral hygiene practices need to start as soon as your child is born. • Consider a battery-powered tooth brush, which adds novelty to cleaning their teeth • Sing nursery rhymes or play a favourite song while you help your child brush their teeth

• Offer a reward every time your toddler allows you to brush for two minutes • Make flossing and brushing as much fun as you can to avoid any negative association or resistance. Be sure to talk to your dentist if you need more advice. more advice

What’s happening at MDSS

Guests from Final Business Breakfast

Progress Update for Men’s Shed

The Neighbourhood Program at MDSS has been busy seeking funding opportunities, communicating with Isaac Regional Council and researching costs associated with land and building of a Mens Shed, in support of men in Moranbah. A survey completed earlier in February 2013 indicated the men of Moranbah are keen to have a place they can go to mentor, build and make things, hang out with others, perform community projects and more. Chris Macfarlan, Community Development Officer brought together a Steering Committee, with funding by Arrow Energy to fund a business case and since the completion of that study the group has met, regularly to further progress to the next stage a feasibility study. The group will meet again on Mon 30/9/13 to discuss how to move the project to the Feasibility stage. If any men would like to join the group they are more than welcome to call Chris on 4941 5164 for more information about the next meeting.

MDSS hosted the final Business Breakfast under the Neighbourhood Program on Friday 2/9/13. Proudly sponsored by Bhp Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance, with guest speakers Brodie Vansleve, Leanne and Sue from Office of Fair Trading. A good 40 people, both men and women were in attendance. Chris Macfarlan farewelled the event after 7 years at the helm, coordinating, facilitating and linking and connecting women in business in Moranbah. The Neighbourhood Program handed over the guard to the Moranbah Traders Association. The Neighbourhood Program new to MDSS, requires Chris to now work with a different target group.

MDSS would like to thank BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA)

BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance has been a proud supporter of MDSS and it is this partnership MDSS would like to thank BMA for. As BMA tenants, MDSS is very grateful for the opportunity to be based at 92 Mills Av, and has resided at this accommodation for 7 years now. Residing at Mills Av, has enabled MDSS to feel secure in its tenancy and concentrate on supporting and caring for the community. BMA is also a major contributor to the MDSS events and activity that both the Rural and Neighbourhood Program are well known for as well to a Community Partnership Program which now employs a MDSS/BMA Settlement Officer to the program. BMA and MDSS together share a passion and commitment toward the promotion and provision of opportunities for all of the community whether in the mining industry or other industry and professions. Education and health and wellness are paramount to a more viable and liveable community. Into the future BMA has contributed a large proportion of funds toward a new building for our youth, as well MDSS, Hinterland Community Care, Emergency and Long Term Accommodation and the Local Radio, in conjunction with a grant from the State Government. All of the not for profit groups involved are looking forward to co-locating together in a central location for the continued support of the community. Development for this project continues with support of the Isaac Regional Council. MDSS acknowledges all of its proud sponsors and supporters within the community, without your valuable donations and funding we are not able to deliver the events and activity that educate and promote health and wellness and much more, within the community.

Thank you to everyone!

Handing over Program to Moranbah TradersAssoc. A certificate of hand over sealed the deal! Presentation by Chris Macfarlan and Robert Adams of MDSS with Lyn Busk and Erica Frederickson of MTA occurred and Chris thanked the audience for their valuable support and sponsorship across the years. Lyn Busk also spoke of the long standing commitment of Chris and MDSS to the breakfasts and thanked MDSS for their part in supporting the business women of Moranbah .

Angry Child Outbursts Submitted by Robert Adams, B.Soc.Wk, MAASW, Rural Family Support Worker, MDSS and based on the work of child psychologists and social workers of the Empowering Parents organisation.

The 10 Rules of Dealing with an Angry Child Here’s a factitious scenario of a parent’s plight in dealing with an aggressive teenager.

Matilda, age 13, has just been told she can’t go to her friend’s house. You need to clean your room first,” says her mother, “You promised to do that, remember?” Matilda gets in her mother’s face and screams, “You’re the meanest mother in the world! I hate you!”. She turns and runs into her bedroom, slamming the door. “That’s it! You’re grounded, young lady,” her mother shouts back. The mother is left feeling exhausted and defeated, and unsure if she’s done the right thing.

who is very upset.” You’ll feel your heart start beating faster because your adrenaline will be heightened. Even though it’s difficult, the trick is to act against that in some way and try to stay calm. Remember, you’re lending your children your strength in these moments; to show them how to handle anger.

4. Don’t get physical with your child.

I took a call once from a dad whose teenage son mouthed off to his mother, and the father shoved him. The fight escalated. The son would not speak to his father because he felt his dad should apologize to him; the father felt that his son caused the problem and worried that his authority would be diminished if he apologized. I advised the father to say, “I lost control and it was wrong for me to shove you. I apologize.” That’s it; end of story. You want to teach your child how to take responsibility and apologise when necessary. Remember, if you get physical, among other things, you’re teaching your child to solve anger with aggression.

5. Take a different approach with younger

kids. If your small child (up to age 4-years) is in the midst of a temper tantrum, you want to Don’t yell or challenge your child when move ever so slightly away from him/her, but he or she is angry. This will increase your feeling of being out of control. The best thing don’t isolate him/her completely. When small you can do is remain calm in a crisis. Think of kids are upset, you want to help them to start to learn that they can have a role in calming it this way: If you get into a car accident and themselves down. You can say, “I wish I could the other driver jumps out and is furious at you, if you can remain calm, they will probably help you calm yourself down. Maybe you can lie on the couch for a little bit”. So instead of, start to relax and be reasonable. But if you “You have to sit there for ten minutes by come back at them with an aggressive yourself”, it’s more of, “When you feel better response, and say, “What are you talking and not upset, you can come and join us”. about, that was your fault,” the tension just stays heightened. So don’t challenge your Don’t freeze up. Some parents freeze up child when he or she is angry - that’s like when their kids get angry. The parent is throwing a match on petrol. emotionally overwhelmed and becomes

6.

2. Don’t reason with your child when he or

she is in the middle of a tantrum, or angry outburst. Many parents fall back on logic when their kids are angry. As adults, we reason through things to defuse tense situations. Kids do not have the same capacity as us adults to apply logic. Saying, “Why are you mad at me? Will only make your child angrier. Instead, wait until he/she calms down and then talk it through later.

paralysed with indecision or gives in to the child. You may find that sometimes your child will get angry on purpose to engage you; they’ll bait you by throwing a fit or because they know it will cause you to give in. Your job is to not take the bait, don’t get angry, don’t give in. Parents can have a tendency to renegotiate in these situations. Remember, if you give in / renegotiate, you’re teaching your child that it’s worth it to act out.

Give consequences for the bad 3. Pay attention to your physical reactions. 7. behaviour, not for the anger. When your child It’s important to watch your physical throws a tantrum, starts screaming and loses reactions because your senses will tell you “Oh my God, I’m in the presence of somebody it, make sure you give him or her

consequences based on his behaviour and not on his emotions. For example, if your child calls you a foul name during an angry outburst, give him or her consequences later for that infraction of the rules. But if all he or she does is stomp into bedroom and yell about how life isn’t fair, I would let that go. Kids get angry just like we do; they need to feel that they have a safe place to let off steam.

8. Don’t give overly harsh punishments.

Harsh punishments are a losing proposition. Here’s why: Let’s say your child is angry, shouting and screaming at you. You keep saying, “If you don’t get it together, I’m going to take away your X-Box for a week. Okay now it’s two weeks…do you want to keep going?” Astonishingly, your child keeps escalating; the more you punish - the worse it gets. We have a name for that kind of discipline: It’s called “consequence stacking or emotional staking”. What’s really happening here is that the parent is losing emotional control and putting a bigger consequence in place to outdo the child’s reaction. At this point the parent has entered the child’s world and lost the parenting role. What you want to ask yourself is, “What do I want my child to learn?” The answer might be, “I want my child to learn how to not throw a fit every time he/she has to do something.

9.

Take a break. When you and your spouse are mad at each other, what do you do to calm down? Often, people say they take a break and do something on their own for a while until they can calm down and talk it through. This technique also works with kids, but parents often don’t think of it because they feel they should have control.

10.

Role model appropriate responses when you’re angry. I also tell parents they should try to role model dealing with their own anger appropriately in front of their children. What are some good ways to do that? Say, “I’m getting frustrated - I’m going to take a break” or “I can’t talk to you right now; I’m really upset so I’m going to wait until I’m calm. Admitting you’re angry and need time to calm down is not a weakness; it takes a lot of strength to say these words out loud. Remember, you’re teaching the lesson of how to manage your anger, and that’s exactly what you want your child to learn.

together Support your Team

Reduced version of Mind Tools Newsletter 293

If you know what causes stress at work for your team, there is a lot a Manager can do, inexpensively to support their team, during these times. For example: Jodie works in a high pressure role, however, she is rarely stressed or upset – in fact, she thrives, despite the demands of her job. One reason for this is her boss and her organisation are supportive. They provide a comfortable working environment, with frequent mentoring and development opportunities, and regular constructive feedback. Jodie is also friends with her colleagues, and she sets aside time each week to meet with them and connect with them. As well they have monthly staff and Management meetings as another form of connection. This scenario is using a work model called Job Demands Resources (JD-R Model). This model suggests that even if you work in a demanding role, you can experience less stress if your organisation provides resources to support you. This model assists Managers to analyse and improve their teams well being and engagement. The model was first published back in 2006 by Arnold Bakker and Evangelia Demerouti, whereby they published their findings in The Journal of Managerial Psychology. The model puts working conditions into two categories: Job Demands and Job Resources.

Job Demands – are the physical or emotional

stressors in your role. These include time pressures, a heavy workload, a stressful environment, role ambiguity, emtional labour and poor relationships.

Job Resources – (Job Positives) are the

physical, social or organisational factors that help you achieve goals and reduce stress. They include autonomy, strong working relationships, opportunities for advancement, coaching and mentoring and learning and development. The JD-R Model states that when job demands are high and job positives are low, stress and burnout are common. Conversely, good job positives can offset the effects of extreme job demands and encourage motivation.

Proudly brought to you by MDSS

Just Lovin’ it 26

How to apply the model Step 1 - Start by reviewing the stressors that may have a negative effect on your team These might include: • • • • • • • •

Short deadlines High volumes of work Complex or boring projects Few opportunities to work autonomously Emotionally draining tasks or roles Unclear goals, or role ambiguity Limited opportunity for career advancement or personal development Excessive rules and procedures.

Step 2 - Address Job Demands

With the list of factors affecting your team you know have it within our control to change many of these factors. Separate the ones you can influence from the ones you can’t and do what you can to deduce job demands. Make certain you have the right people assigned to the right tasks, if people are not playing to their strengths they are likely to experience higher stress levels. Can tasks be reassigned or redesigned? Examine work flows, are there processes that could be improved to remove bottlenecks or stress points? Support your team by helping them to feel engaged with the work they are doing, make sure they have the resources to do their jobs effectively.

Step 3 - Identify possible job resources/positives

Identify and promote job positives that act as a buffer between your team members and the role demands ie: • Mentoring and coaching • Training and Development • Constructive feedback • Clearer goals and organisational policy clarity

Step 4 - Promote Job resources/positives

Look for the opportunities to encourage learning and development and do not forget to look at the one key basic work principle of ‘good working relationships’. Create a happy, supporting environment now, by following these simple steps. In doing so, as you use this down turn in business to promote and educate staff, you might find they are more conducive to change and growth.

Study Tips for Exams

Facts on how to rock a test Geeks are C ool to be And turn out ss everyone’s Bo

Ten Tips - Studying

Make studying a part of your everyday school routine and don’t be limited to ‘cramming’ for exams and tests. Establish a routine

Set aside a particular time each day for study and revision and stick to it.

Have variety in your study program

Study different subjects each day and do different types of work and revision in each study session.

Avoid interrupting your concentration

Have all the appropriate materials with you before you start a session of study to minimise distractions.

Test yourself on what you have studied

Ask your parents or family members to quiz you on what you have learnt, use draft questions from books, past assessments or major exam papers.

Don’t panic at exam time

Create a study environment

If you have followed a study routine and have been revising your class work, there should be no need to worry. Try to keep yourself calm, positive and confident.

Set a timetable

Especially if you’re having trouble - whether it’s grasping a new concept or understanding something you learnt earlier in the year. They will be happy to help.

This should be away from interruptions and household noise, such as the television. Ensure there is adequate lighting and ventilation, a comfortable chair and appropriate desk. With a timetable you can plan to cover all your subjects in an organised way, allotting the appropriate time for each without becoming overwhelmed.

Ask your teachers for guidance

Look after yourself

Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, and eat healthy foods. Keep sugary foods to a minimum. Make sure you get enough sleep each night. Regular physical exercise makes you feel great, boosts your energy and helps you relax. So try to keep up regular sporting activities or at least fit in some regular exercise as often as you can.

Reward yourself for studying

Watch your favourite television program, spend time with your friends, walk to the park and play sport throughout the week. Just Lovin’ it 29 www.schools.nsw.edu.au/gotoschool/highschool/studyingtips.php
