From the Desk of MMG President Susan McDaniel A Reflection Hello Everyone!

I hope you are all enjoying the changing of the seasons, or if you live in AZ, the changing of slightly below 100 degrees. I’m sure we are all wondering where this year has gone! It seems like everything around us is moving at warp speed and we must do the same.

As a reflec on on this past year, I would like to thank our team from FCA for their con nued support and improvements made throughout this year. We have had some great enhancements made to Dealer Connect along with addi onal, much needed informa on and more to come…Several of our Mopar Masters have been involved in Focus Groups with Kathy Wideman regarding recalls and general Supply Chain, along with Bonnie Hedeen looking to improve the Parts Inquiry and Pipeline screens.

We really appreciate their relentless drive to keep improving our processes so that we can all be more producve.

We were recently informed of the unfortunate news that Mike Cockell will be leaving Mopar Sales and Field Opera ons and transi oning to Fleet Service. Although we are happy for Mike and the new changes and challenges ahead for him, he will be missed. Mike has always showed the utmost support and enthusiasm for our group and has been a key piece to our communica on with Mopar over the last few years.

Ryan Maguire from the Northeast Business Center will be taking his place with some big shoes to fill. We have heard some wonderful things about Ryan and are really looking forward to forging the same working rela onship with him and strengthening our lines of communica on even more. Farewell and best of luck to you in your new endeavors Mike Cockell and welcome aboard to your new beginnings Ryan Maguire.

In August we had one of the best “turn outs” we have ever had for our MMG 20 Group! As always, Mark Beaton and Jen Short did a fabulous job of coordina ng and facilita ng all details, members and vital informa on.

We had 30 members in a endance and 9 of those were Service Managers. It was a great group and a lot of useful informa on was shared.

In March of 2018 The Mopar Masters Guild will meet again at The Monte Carlo in Las Vegas. I cannot express enough to everyone on the Mopar Masters Tracking List (found on the home page of Dealer Connect) of the top 100 purchasing Mopar Dealers in the country to join us. I promise, you will be glad that you did!

Mopar Masters Guild Meets with Mopar in Auburn Hills Productive Time Includes FCA Service & Parts Managers 20 Group If there is one thing the MMG does well…it is leaving no stone unturned….

Members of the Mopar Masters Guild were in Auburn Hills in August and had a VERY even ul visit! Several of us arrived early on Friday the 18th for a dinner with Tim Quine e (from UPS) and his wife Denise at a restaurant called Black Rock Grill. As usual, a good me was had by all. If you have never been to Black Rock, you MUST try it. They serve their steaks and seafood on hot black rocks and it is s ll cooking to your desired temperature when they bring it out to you! It was great seeing Tim and his wife as we had not been able to meet up with them since New Orleans. We really appreciate all of the support Tim and his team at UPS provide for us throughout the year. He is always there to answer any ques ons and solve any issues that come his way. Thank You Tim!

On Saturday, a group of us met on the famed Woodward Avenue for the Woodward Dream Cruise and what a show it was! Any kind of car, truck, bus, bicycle…anything on wheels you can imagine was there.

The designs, colors and sounds were amazing to say the least. Thank you to our long- me friend and guild member, Glenn Hojnaki for se ng this up for us! We had front row seats at Village Jeep.

Continued from Page 6 On Sunday, we had another great event at The Henry Ford Museum. All I can say is WOW. Kat Monteiro (the renowned author of View from My Office), Shane Birdyshaw of Benchmark Chrysler Jeep Dodge and I had an amazing day looking at this spectacular display of history. There were, not only, cars from all eras, but se ngs of homes from different me periods, memorabilia from the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, etc. a special sec on dedicated to Civil Rights and Women’s Rights and machinery used in mills from the turn of the century…the list goes on and on…We also visited Greenfield Village on the grounds just outside the Henry Ford. This was another beau ful display of history with staged homes from different me periods and hosts there to explain the actual se ngs and tell specific stories.

On Tuesday, our friends from Mopar dropped by to share some informa on with us and discuss some upcoming changes to a few of our programs. As always, it was nice to see everyone and bounce ideas back and forth.

Wednesday, we had a great mee ng at Centerline hosted by Mike Ritacca. We covered many topics such as Supply Chain Opera ons, Fleet, Recalls, Material Planning, PDC Opera ons, Packaging and Transporta on, just to name a few.

I can tell you that this team is on top of all of the issues that we struggle with on a day to day basis and they are all constantly working towards improving every technical aspect that involves our ability to service our customers. A big Thank You to everyone at Centerline for your support and hospitality.

This concluded our Big Adventure and if I may say so myself‌it was a success!

Mopar Masters visit Elite EXTRA in Eau Claire Wisconsin The Mopar Masters Guild’s Vendor Commi ee gathered in Minneapolis on Thursday a ernoon September 14 , 2017 for the annual migra on to Elite Extra’s headquarters Eau Claire Wisconsin. In a endance for MMG were Rick Monteiro, JD Ipsen, Joe McBeth, Steve Hofer and Tom Schelonka.

First we met Chris Messer, Publisher of Fender Bender Magazine and long me MMG sponsor, at Psycho Suzi’s for lunch in Minneapolis on the Mississippi River. We had to go to a restaurant that features a 1971 Hemi Roadrunner on its home page. We are Mopar Masters a er all.

Chris brought us up to speed on their publica ons that include 10 Mission media’s Fender Bender, Ratchet+Wrench and Fixed Ops Business publica ons. FenderBender is the leading progressive media brand exclusively serving collision repair shop owners and operators through examining in-depth real world struggles, successes and solu ons from the industry, providing our readers and users the inspira on, tools and mo vaon to help them succeed in the collision repair industry.

The road trip to Wisconsin took us across the Mississippi River and through the rural western side of the state.

The wildlife viewing included cows, corn and soybeans oh-my. We arrived in Eau Claire and se led into our downtown hotel had a light dinner and readied ourselves for the Friday mee ng with Elite EXTRA.

Elite EXTRA President Jim Ward introduced his team that included Susan Marco CEO, Ross Kleiner Director of Enterprise Accounts, Jen Kleiner Account Manager/Product Specialist and Josh Gurgel Integra on Manger to name a few. We were also joined by Jeff Smith CRO from Azuga a telema cs partner , Karen Blunden CEO and Karl Krug Market strategist of Infomedia Ltd. a So ware as a Service or SaaS company.

Jen Kleiner premiered a demo of the newest edi on 9.0. Elite EXTRA (Extreme Tracking and Rou ng Applicaon) so ware which is a real- me, GPS dispatch management solu on designed to maximize employee produc vity, improve customer service, and promote efficiencies.

Prior to our visit I was able to pilot Elite Extra 9.0 for a couple of weeks. This allowed the MMG to provide valuable feedback to Elite EXTRA on site in their headquarters in front of the key developers. The already world class product gives user’s addi onal features and produc vity enhancements.

We also got a peak under the tent of future products such as Automated Dispatch and EXTRA Shu le before hearing from EXTRA partners Azuga and Infomedia Ltd.

Jeff Smith from Azuga showed us the benefits of data retrieval via a connected device a ached to the OBD-II port of our delivery fleet vehicles. Azuga has partnered with EXTRA to deliver ba le tested OBD-II hardware to their customers. They can layer Azuga ONE to collect data from the vehicles providing valuable data to dispatchers and your management team.

Karen Blunden and Karl Krug gave a demo of Microcat PartsBridge® a parts ordering system that connects dealers with body shops, to sell more OE collision parts.

No visit to Wisconsin would be complete without cheese curds and an “old fashion” and a Friday Fish Fry night so we headed over to THE LOCAL LOUNGE a tradi onal Supper Club with a Modern Twist. I also learned a few things like. “I drank a couple-two-three beers”, “Can you pass me the cheese curds?” “You-Betcha! Here ya go.”

Since we traveled so far we agreed to stay the weekend and truly become Wisconsinites JD and Joe joined tournament bass fishermen Ross and Dick Kleiner for a true small mouth bass adventure while Tom and I headed out to Eau Claire Golf and Country Club with Jim and John Ward for a fantas c round of golf.

Continued from Page 12 A er the morning exercise we grouped back together for a brewery tour that ended in Dallas Wisconsin. Joe Mcbeth’s mother pointed out on Facebook that he looked a li le lost. “Joe this is not the Dallas you’re looking for”

Sunday was travel day, so we le early to experience a true country drive in western Wisconsin. First stop before lunch was to the Ellsworth Creamery. My team back in Escondido expects squeaky cheese curds and Wisconsin summer sausage when I get back and this place must have the freshest curds in the state. I bought 6 pounds of warm curds for the trip back home and we were ea ng them back in California less than 24 hours later. JD is a cheese burger connoisseur so we had to head to Home of the Original “Juicy Lucy” Ma ’s Bar before returning the rental car and ge ng on our planes.

On behalf of the MMG I want like to thank Elite EXTRA for their years of dedica on improving the so ware many of us use daily for our mutual success. You guys are wonderful hosts, we truly feel like we are part of the Wisconsinite family.

Snap-On Adds Capabilities to Support Collision Repair Diagnostics New coverage helps collision repair shops perform diagnos c scans on standard and advanced driver assistance systems.

Snap-on announced that it’s most recent so ware upgrades to its diagnos c scan tool products perform full system code scans mandated by vehicle manufacturers for pre- and post-collision repair work.

“Our Snap-on diagnos c pla orms offer the most comprehensive coverage in the industry, with coverage for 49 original manufacturer makes and the ability to diagnose more than 100 vehicle systems – any of which can be damaged by collision,” said Leian Wunderlich, so ware program manager, Snap-on Diagnos cs. “While collision repair is not covered by a manufacturer’s warranty, regardless of age, many insurance companies pay shops to perform scans, as required by vehicle manufacturers. Snap-on provides the most comprehensive and latest technology for older and newer models, delivering new opportuni es for business growth.”

Standard systems and new driver assistance systems can be damaged by collisions. Some of the most common included in the current So ware Upgrade 17.2: 

Seat weight sensor – o en when a collision occurs, airbags are deployed and seats are damaged. Not only does a Snap-on scan tool ensure there are no issues with systems post-repair, it also recalibrates the passenger seat weight sensor for proper opera on.



Forward collision warning/lane departure warning – this camera-based system is mounted at the top of the windshield near the rear-view mirror. A common repair in body shops, technicians must properly aim the camera upon replacing the windshield.



Adap ve cruise control – located in the front bumper or grill, this radar sensor may be the first sensor damaged in a front-end collision. To ensure proper opera on, technicians can use a Snap-on diagnos c tool to realign the sensor and make sure no fault codes are stored in the system a er repair.

The new Upgrade 17.4, available October 2017, adds even more of this valuable coverage. For example: 

Chrysler pedestrian protec on, light rain sensor module and ac ve noise cancella on



Hyundai and Kia lane departure warning system, park assist system and surround view camera system



Mazda headlamp leveling, adap ve front ligh ng and ligh ng control modules

“Technicians can service more vehicles in more ways, saving them time while increasing profits, all of which helps to expand their opportunities,” concluded Wunderlich.

The View From My Office

“It’s the most wonderful me of the year…”

I know most of you know this as a Christmas song, but I am going to steal this verse and apply it to the Fall Season because for me this is the most wonderful me of the year! I love this me of year. I enjoy the near perfect cooler weather and then of course there is Halloween and Thanksgiving. I do wish we had the beau ful trees changing colors like in other parts of our wonderful country, but we get a li le bit of it if we drive up into the mountains. I would love to be back on the eastern coast for the Fall season just to see all those colors, it’s on my bucket list.

But, as I am content and thinking about enjoying the Fall season I can’t help think of all the people who have endured all this crazy weather and are far from being content, they have lost their homes - heck - not just their homes but their whole communi es, and not only homes and property damage but so many lives have been lost. Some places will not even be habitable for so many years, if ever. They are struggling every day. I wish for those people affected, hope, and that they will once again feel peace and contentment.

I am sure there are many of you out there that are reading this right now that have been affected one way or another by all the September weather and storms. It’s all a lot closer to home than we imagine. Good wishes and thoughts go out to all.

For this issue I wanted to write about our trip to Detroit for the Mopar 20 group mee ngs and the Woodward Dream Cruise in August. What a great me I had! I am already hoping that we get to go again next year!

Let me start off by telling you a li le bit of history.

In 1848 Woodward Avenue was converted from logs to planks, young carriage drivers would race along the Avenue.

Continued from Page 20 Early in the 20th century Woodward Ave was developed as a major street in Detroit and was lined with mansions and major churches.

By 1958 the Avenue was used by many for unofficial street racing with cars. The road was wide and divided by a medium and there was not a lot of commercial buildings so the road was not as busy, all this was perfect in the eyes of young teens wan ng to get out and see how fast their car would go! As me went on Drive Ins were added along the upper road which a racted the local teen clientele and during the muscle car age Woodward Ave. had many car dealerships and auto accessory shops along the way. Pre y soon it became the Ave for people to come out to cruise up and down, race and hang out along the road.

In 1994 the Mayor, Pamela McCullough and Nelson House a plumber came up with the idea of the Woodward Dream Cruise to help raise money for a children’s soccer field in the community.

In August 1995 they expected around 30,000-40,000 people to show up for the inaugural event - about 250,000 showed up. Today the Woodward Dream Cruise is the largest 1-day classic car event in the world, brings in over $56 million annually to the Metro Detroit economy and brings in over 1 million people. And if you have never been - put it on your bucket list - it is amazing!

Our trip started off on Saturday a ending the Woodward Dream Cruise. It was so fun watching and listening to all the cars drive by, old and new, custom and stock, unusual and handmade! There were cars parked on every bit of space along the whole avenue, for miles! So many people walking around, or cruising, young and old, all with smiles on their faces. The whole day was filled with good energy and good vibra ons. It was great.

I want to give a BIG shout out to Glen Hojnacki from Palace Chrysler Jeep for talking with Village Jeep and arranging a place for us to hang out and have a seat.

It was a warm day and the shade and cold drinks were very much appreciated. That evening the Marrio Hotel where we were all staying had a BBQ with food and drinks in their bo om parking lot. A lot of cars came over from a day of cruising and parked, so we had our own li le car show.

Some of the cars were smoking their res at one end of the lot and then le ng loose to speed from one end to the other. So fun to watch!! There were also games set up where some of our members played a few good compe ve games of corn hole! It was a great way to end a great day.

On Sunday some people went exploring, others played golf, and I got to hang out with our Mopar Masters Guild President Susan McDaniel and Shane Birdyshaw - Marvin Windham’s new employee. We went to the Henry Ford Museum. Which is another place you should put on your bucket list if you have never been. So much to explore there, inside the museum and outside as well. We rode around the park on an old steam engine train and drove around in a Model T.

Monday brought on the FCA Service & Parts Managers 20 Group mee ngs with Mark Beaton and of course the highlight of the day being the eclipse! I joined them all for lunch and we sat outside and shared the 2 pair of solar glasses I brought with me. It was not totality like in some parts of the country but it was 86% so it was really cool to see.

Tuesday was more mee ngs for the group and then Glen Hojnacki came through again and took a group of us to the Detroit Tigers baseball game. What a great stadium!

Was sorry the Tigers lost to the Yankees but it was a very fun night and we all enjoyed ourselves.

Wednesday was me to head back home. The group had their mee ngs in the morning. Our plane le in the late a ernoon and Susan McDaniel was on the same plane as us so she rode with us and we spent the day cruising around Detroit on our way to the airport. Detroit is the most interes ng city. They have really cool sculptures around the city and they have walk ways over the roads connec ng buildings and they even make the underneath of these walk ways interes ng.

We drove over to Belle Island and got to see the awesome James Sco Memorial Fountain and drove along the same roadways as the Indy Cars drive on race day for the Detroit Grand Prix. Of course, as we le the downtown area we also drove through neighborhoods that are s ll struggling and are run down with burnt homes and abandoned buildings. It’s quite sad and I wonder if they will ever make it back.

Detroit is beau ful and has much to explore. Something I did not realize before. I am looking forward to going back again, hopefully next August!

From Fewer Accidents to Robo-Taxis: The Driverless-Car Era

The days when 15-year-olds learn to drive on a desolate stretch of road could soon be a thing of the past: We’re speeding along in the era of the driverless car.

You’ll continue to drive but – slowly, gradually, over the coming decade – the car will take over. It will handle parking, braking when you’re too close another car and, possibly, shuttle you when you’re just exhausted.

Don’t skip buying a new car because none of this will happen overnight. Also, don’t fret that a future filled with driverless cars, drones and robots leaves no place for humans. There will always be the need for human touch because people can solve problems in ways that no robot could.

In UPS’s Routes to the Future whitepaper, we looked at key trends that will affect businesses over the next decade. Here are the four phases for the new driving area:

Many people equate driverless cars with Jetsons cartoons, but we’re already in the first phase of “passive” autonomous driving. Many new cars now come equipped with sensors and advanced electronics that give drivers audible warnings when they’re crossing lanes or following too closely.

Here are potential changes we’re thinking about: Fewer accidents Could car accidents become a rarity? KPMG, the audit and professional services firm, estimates that the adoption of self-driving cars could eventually reduce accidents by 80 percent in coming decades, to just one accident for every 1.6 million miles driven by 2040. Look further down the road, and by 2030 or 2040 accidents may become so rare that stand-alone car insurance could become a thing of the past. Auto coverage could simply become a rider on your homeowners’ policy.

Smaller vehicles

Limited driver substitution has just begun and will run probably through 2018. In the next few years, the driver remains the primary operator – but limited functions such as enhanced cruise control and self-parking will be handled by the car’s computer.

From 2018 to 2022, we’ll experience complete autonomous capability. New cars will accelerate, brake and steer themselves, but drivers will still take over in the event of an emergency or system failure. Read: Drivers still have to pay attention.

The fourth phase will kick in around 2024, with all new cars sold in the second half of the decade incorporating full autonomous capabilities that can function without any human intervention. By 2030, expect that 25 percent of all vehicles on the road will be fully autonomous. Of course, older cars will still be on the road – some people will hang on to their cars as long as they can – so the two types of vehicles will be forced to co-exist.

This evolution will affect everything from urban planning to logistics. New business services – and sectors – will emerge, while some established companies will see their business model come under pressure.

Fewer accidents also means that cars could become lighter – and cheaper. No longer will safety-conscious mothers feel compelled to drive mammoth SUVs. (It remains to be seen how this will impact warehouse store shopping trips!) As self-driving cars become cheaper to build – and then to operate – we’ll see new alliances formed between the traditional automakers, Silicon Valley players who understand software interfaces, and the ride-sharing services that are eager to deploy fleets of autonomous robo-taxis.

Robo-taxis If the fares for any future fleets of urban taxis became cheap enough, city dwellers might choose to no longer own their own automobile. If that sounds like bad news for car makers, fear not.

Yes, moving from a culture of car ownership to one where use urban taxis could mean there are fewer vehicles in circulation.

But if the future is filled with robo-taxis being driven around the clock, they’ll need to be replaced more frequently. While Americans today hang on to their car for an average 11.4 years on average, frequently used vehicles will need to be replaced every three years. That’s good news for car makers.

When we think about the future of driverless cars, we realize they’re not just about getting around any more than a smartphone is just about making calls. They will create a new ecosystem of activities and services that change the way we live our urban lives. They will offer up solutions to long-standing problems that plague today’s cities and challenge us to consider a host of new societal, technological and ethical questions.

FCA explains ban on weld-through primer, other considerations for welds An FCA expert said last month that the company’s opposition to weld-through primer stemmed from the concern that the substance overly contaminates the weld area. “That has always been a statement of ours,” FCA body, chassis and paint global service lead Dan Black told a July 13 Guild 21 call. (See slides.)

He said that FCA’s engineers have said “they’re not comfortable” using the product in repairs based upon the results. Honda cited a similar concern last year in ar cula ng its own ban on the substance. It said it started to investigate the science of weld-through primer following the opposition of OEMs like FCA and concluded zinc can contaminate the weld pool.

FCA takes its ban seriously. I-CAR reported in January that the OEM had previously allowed weld-through primer on Fiat vehicles but banned it on Chrysler models. But FCA ultimately carried out a purge and changed all prior repair manuals — including the Fiat instructions — to “forbid the use of weldthrough primer,” I-CAR wrote in January. (Emphasis I-CAR’s.) “Per our contact at FCA, the free site is s ll in the process of being updated and weld-through primer should not be used,” I-CAR also wrote then.

(Emphasis I-CAR’s.) Other OEMs are OK with the substance, and it’s important that shops respect each OEM’s individual instruc ons and not mix and match.

“A er wri ng this series of ar cles, we found that the majority of OEMs do require the use of weld-through when replacing steel weld-on parts,” I-CAR wrote. “Some OEMs do have a specific brand of weld-through primer that they require. We also located where this informa on can be found in the body repair manuals. It is important to note that weld-through primer should not be used on aluminum.” (Emphasis I-CAR.) More on FCA welding Black said the fear of contamina on also informs FCA’s requirement during a frame p replacement that all e-coat within 25 mm of the weld joint be removed. The buffers ensure the heat affect from the weld doesn’t burn into the e-coat. “We want to make sure we get good weld penetra on,” Black said, calling the e-coat removal “important.” Shops will “backfill” the corrosion protec on during the collision repair process anyway, he said. (This corrosion protec on would include substances like creeping wax inhibitor, which can be sprayed in 360 degrees inside a frame rail.) Black also cau oned shops welding front frame ps onto a Ram 1500 rail to measure the frame and p repeatedly.

First, measure to ensure the p was in the correct loca on prior to tack-welding it onto the frame, and then a second me following the tack weld. It’d be much easier to solve a misaligned frame rail before one began to skip-s tch the replacement p, Black said. (Skip-s tching minimizes the heat affect, as we discussed here.)

But measure a third me anyway to confirm alignment, Black said.

“In this case, you’re going to measure three mes,” he said.

Now that I have your attention with that title, I guess I need to explain...

Recently, a certain NFL team owner had a meeting with all of his coaches, players and field staff and firmly told them, “You are all simply paid performers on a stage and that field is my stage! Wow - strong words, right? But it got me thinking about all of the times I go into dealerships and hear the service manager tell me how he can’t get his people to answer the phone, or greet customers fast or call customers back with updates or use the proper op-codes or sell suggested services or get customers to sign a repair order - the list could go on and on. The key words here are “I can’t get” and my question is who, exactly, is running the store? Well, while I’m not sure who’s running it, I do know that obviously, it’s not the service manager. And that got me thinking - that’s a real problem in our industry.

Think about that little speech the team owner made for a minute. Look, I’m not saying you have to be that tough - but there’s a lot of good stuff in there. All to often we let our people run our store - and the fact is, if you are a service manager you are charged with running the store in a professional, profitable, customeroriented way.

Your boss, the dealer or general manager, picked you to run that department- he didn’t pick a tech or an advisor or, for god’s sake, a cashier to run it- he picked you! So to that, I say ‘Grow Some’.

Continued from Page 20 Be passionate, strong and driven - and let everyone know that you are in control and that the things you ask to be done are there because you believe they are the right things to do - and, get this, you have the right to expect those things to be done and they need to know that you will hold them accountable. To refer to the team owner’s speech- have your employees ever embarrassed you with a customer? You know the answer is yes - but the bigger question is - what did you do about it- or what are you going to do about it in the future?

Your job is to call the plays - you are in charge and the minute you look the other way when someone does something against your rules, that’s when you need to jump in and correct it. I say this all the time - I’ve been to stores where the tail has completely wagged the dog off - there’s just a big tail running the store, and that’s bad, real bad.

So, here’s my suggestion. Write down your rules. Give everyone a copy. Hold a meeting and make it clear that you are in control, you call the plays and while you need, love and care about every employee, you will not be run over anymore. Tell them straight up, you took a dose of strength serum and you ‘grew some’. And here’s the cool part, when you take control and ‘grow some’, your store will ‘grow some’ (business I mean)!

It’s important to note that I am not a dealership consultant. I have an advertising company called Car People Marketing that specializes in increasing service traffic and customer retention. I say this because people often think I am or should be a consultant because of the topics and content in the articles I write.

And for the record, I always try to bring value to my topics, I am truthful and sometimes controversial- in other words, I sometimes piss people off and this just might be one of those times.
