r. Edward Terino, owner and medical director of The Plastic Surgery Institute of Southern California, provides aesthetic (cosmetic) surgery and nonsurgical procedures. How do you distinguish yourself from the competition?
“By my extensive experience. Experience is the best teacher. Also because of my Godgiven gift of having creative-artistic talents and being able to bring them to the operating table. Everything in the beauty industry is an art form. To create beauty is to improve the quality of life for our patients. True, inborn artistic talent is not easy to find, and it is even more difficult if not impossible to teach, except to a limited extent. Another distinguishing quality is my perception that faces are three-dimensional, and therefore our surgery must be focused on improving threedimensional volume aspects of the nose, cheeks, chin and jaw line. I am also historically the leading pioneer in the legalizing research of biochemical ‘fillers’ that can be utilized with injections through the skin to fill volume deficiencies in the face from birth or aging.”
What is your area of specialty?
“My pioneering and unique invention and development of government-patented anatomic design 3-D facial contouring implants, as well as my initiating the field of 3-D facial fillers, have created for me a reputation locally nationally and internationally as THE specialist in that field. However with my artistic interest in plastic surgery, I totally enjoy performing all procedures both reconstructive and cosmetic and in all areas of the body.”

Tell us about your office staff.
“Our office staff aims to please in every way. From the moment patients walk in the door, my team knows that their time is just as valuable as our time. They are very experienced in the field of beauty and cosmetic surgery. The office is designed to have a nonmedical, cozy, homey atmosphere.”
How does having a strong relationship with you benefit your patients?
“My entire life has revolved around having strong, positive and meaningful relationships with people. That is why I decided to enjoy a private practice in lovely communities as opposed to the colder, distant relationships that MDs who work in universities, hospitals and clinics seem to have. A strong relationship creates trust, which in turn magically creates better results from their cosmetic proce-
dures. I get the highest degree of personal satisfaction out of my work and often make lasting personal friendships with my patients.”
What advice do you give for preventing illness?
“Even in my first year of medical school, I observed that people’s illnesses seem to be aggravated and even caused somehow by the patients’ patterns, habits of lifestyle and
