May is here and hopefully bringing us brighter, longer days, more consistent weather, and a taste of summer to come! In anticipation, we bring you an issue full of value-added entertainment and places to visit to help liven our mood and plan for the holidays ahead. Organise your May school break with our guide to the best things to do in the local area. The bank holiday weekend means you’ll find an ever-growing number of events and activities for all ages, with a variety of attractions inviting us to join them for music events, festivals, outdoor trails and shows. And if the sun shines, simply head outdoors to the numerous local parks and playgrounds with a picnic! Elsewhere, as ever, you’ll find a round-up of local news and detailed diary pages for day-to-day planning to help keep everyone happy and amused! We’ll be back again in July with our summer edition, bursting with inspirational ways to fill your free time! A budding young musician? Apply now for NMPAT County Auditions

Are you a young person interested in music and performing arts? Would you like to rehearse and perform with other, like-minded individuals? Why not audition for a County Ensemble? NMPAT offers a wide range of performing arts, activities including bands, choirs, orchestras, chamber groups and jazz ensembles, and Young Actors Company! County Ensemble auditions and rehearsals take place at NMPAT, 125 Kettering Road, Northampton. Each group rehearses weekly during term time and performs in concerts and festivals throughout the year, at venues including Northampton’s Derngate. All auditions are free to attend; membership of a County Ensemble is subject to a termly subscription, and financial support is available for families in need. The closing date for applications is Friday 24th May, and auditions will take place during the week commencing Monday 8th July, for membership to begin in September. Learn and develop an essential life skill with Northampton Swimming Club

Northampton Swimming Club is a not-for-profit organisation that provides swimming lessons and coaching every day after school and at weekends for children of all ages, in and around Northampton. They are based at The Northampton High School, The Duston School, Weston Favell Academy and Headlands School. Their classes range from Parent and Baby lessons to advanced lessons, to development squads and international swimmers within their competitive programme. They are a Swim England SwimMark accredited club with fully qualified teachers and coaches. Their aim is to help children to gain a life skill, improve water confidence and learn new techniques in a fun and safe environment, whilst achieving badges and certificates at every level. During school holidays, they host intensive swimming and stroke development courses to aid the progression of each swimmer.

Four weeks of free training for new beginners at TISKA Karate

TISKA (Traditional International Shotokan Karate Association) heads up clubs nationally and internationally. TISKA was established by Gursharan Sahota, the Chief Instructor (8th Dan) and founder. He achieved the high grade of 8th Dan in 2015 and was asked to accept the title of “Shihan” meaning Master Instructor. This title is given as a sign of respect for the person named. Shihan currently teaches over 40 classes per week to students in Beaconsfield, Chalfont St Peter, Amersham, Berkhamsted, Dunstable, Maidenhead, Northamptonshire and Leicestershire and has bought many hundreds of students to Black belt standard and beyond. Karate is the ultimate in self-defence and promotes fitness, self-awareness, confidence, etiquette, respect and self-discipline. Students at TISKA start from the age of four upwards, and as a family-based club, many families train together. Shihan offers all new beginners four weeks of free training upon joining TISKA. Family fun at Northampton’s Eid Festival

SUNDAY 19TH MAY

Northampton’s Eid Festival takes place on Sunday 19th May from 12noon-6pm at Becket’s Park. All are welcome to this free, cultural community festival, organised by the Northampton Eid Management Group, which will include live entertainment, craft and cultural stands, delicious food stalls and a range of inflatable games, such as Football Slide and the ever-popular Bouncy Castle. Enjoy on stage music from Dhol and African drummers and the Old Savoy Jazz Band, along with performances from Indian and Polish Dance groups, plus much more! Experience Ancient Adventures at Stanwick Lakes this May half term…

Along with pottery-painting and ranger-led activities! Travel back in time this school holiday to take on Boudicca’s Iron Age Quest - a trail to search for supplies and match stickers (£3.50) - or perhaps you’ll make and decorate an Iron Age shield (£1)? Available all week, these activities culminate with the Iron Age Settlement Open Day on 1st June - a ‘living history’ celebration experience - with blacksmithing and woodworking demos, weaving and crafting activities, magical storytelling and a chance to try ancient foods. Swimming and Soft Play options at Trilogy this half term

Trilogy Swim School delivers swimming lessons at Cripps Recreation Centre, Danes Camp, Lings Forum and Mounts Baths for all ages. Their School Holiday Swim Camps improve confidence and ability in the water and are available to Junior Active members aged four plus. The swim camps also cover different stroke techniques in detail. Courses run for one or five consecutive days and are FREE to Junior Active members! Trilogy’s Berzerk soft play is FREE to Junior Active members aged under 10 Monday-Friday during term time.
