North West looking to retain their title Wouter Pienaar The Spar national netball championships will once again shine the spotlight on South Africa’s finest netball players as they aim for national success in one of the country’s toughest and fiercest competitions. This year the championship takes place at the Hoy Park Sports Centre in Durban from 7-13 August. North West is the current champion, having won the title last year under the mentorship of NWU Pukke’s Dorette Badenhorst. This year, Julene Meyer takes over the reins as coach and confidence is high that she can also steer North West to another victory. The champions started off like a house on fire on Monday, beating Gauteng 2, 51-17 in very windy conditions on the open courts. The following day, North West also got the better of KwaZulu-Natal A with a 50-34 victory. They also proceeded to thrash KwaZulu-Natal B 69-15 to end off a successful first two days of the tournament. At this moment, Free State and Western Cape look like North West’s main challengers for the title, with Gauteng making an indifferent start this year. The match of the tournament thus far has been between Free State and Gauteng as the former completed a close 49-47 victory. The margins for error are thin and can decide a match and championship - the winner will surely be the team that can hold their nerve and beat the high-flying North West. The final will be televised on Supersport 210 from 09:30 on Saturday 13 August.

Tour de Mielie takes centre stage in Potchefstroom Wouter Pienaar The third race of the Spur Schools MTB League will make its way to Potchefstroom this Saturday, 13 August with some of the best mountain bikers in North West and the country, for that matter, will battle it out for first place at Friesland Melkery. The appropriately named Tour de Mielie will feature a number of big school cycling names such as SA champion, Danielle Strydom, former SA XCO champion, Pieter du Toit, and current SA XCO champs, Nooi Louw and Ryan Conradie, to name but a few. Overall, Potchefstroom Gimnasium is in first place after the opening two rounds of the series with 199 points with Rustenburg High School in second place on 140 points. Volkskool Potchefstroom is in fifth place with 88 points and will need to start catching up. On an individual level, Joné van Ee-
den of Potchefstroom Gimnasium currently leads the sub-junior girls’ section with her brother, Brendan also showing his mettle in the youth boys’ section in second place overall. Ryan Conradie of the same school leads the way in this section. In the junior men’s section, the battle is hotting up between Pieter du Toit and Brandon van der Berg, both of Potch Volkies. Du Toit still leads the overall standings but Van der Berg got a well-deserved victory in the previous race. MTB enthusiasts should also keep an eye on the junior women’s race where Nooi Louw of Volkies and Danielle Strydom of Gimmies, who are training partners, battle it out for the top position. Almost like Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost, without the heated rivalry, these are two riders who battle it out on the track and congratulate one another after the race - a great example of sportsmanship.

Seventy years after setting foot on the Potchefstroom golf course as a caddy in 1946, earning “two and six” (25 cents) for a round of 18 holes and after playing the game for sixty years, Ronnie Moseley scored a hole in one, This occured on the par 3 17th last month at the ripe old age of eighty. When he started off as a caddy, they still used oxen-driven lawnmowers. Ronnie was a scholar at Central Primary and shared a classroom with people like Dick Daly, Peter Bolton and Louis Brugman. He then went to Potch Boys High.

He and his mother lived with his sister, Mathilda who was married to the golf professional, Steve Naudé. It is believed that the notorious Mathilda tree obstacle on the 12th hole was named after his sister. Mathilda also scored a hole in one on the course in the late forties. Ronnie has fond memories of his childhood as he practically grew up on the course with Steve Naudé as his guardian. His mother did the catering in the club. The retired metallurgical manager who specialised in the closing of redundant mines and the recovery of the last gold still plays twice a week.
