Free rabies vaccinations for Fochville region Adele Louw The Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development will be running a free rabies vaccination campaign for the Fochville and Kokosi area next week. According to the West Rand state veterinarian, Dr Jason Mpofu, people staying in the Fochville and Kokosi areas will be able to take their pets for inoculations from 26 July to 2 August. This follows a confirmed case of rabies in Carltonville last month. On all the days, vaccinations will be done from 13:00 to 16:00. On 26 July, officials of the State Veterinarian’s office will do vaccinations at Losberg Primary School and Fochville Clinic. On 27 July, residents will be able to take their pets to the Kokosi Clinic and Kokosi Extension 99 to be vaccinated. Vaccinations will take place at Retlile Primary School in Kokosi and at the Kokosi bus terminus on 28 July. On 1 August, vaccinations will be held at the Kokosi community park and at Kokosi Community Hall. Residents of Greenspark will get their turn at Greenspark Clinic on 2 August. Rabies is a disease of mammals that affects the brain and leads to the death of the person or animal involved if
not treated early. Animals found infected with the disease are put to sleep. Symptoms vary widely and include behavioural changes. An aggressive animal may suddenly become placid or a friendly pet may become vicious all of a sudden and could even bite the owner; aggressiveness and paralysis. It can occur from as early as seven days or as late as six months after be-
ing bitten by an infected animal. The virus occurs in great numbers in the saliva of an infected animal showing symptoms of rabies. To help safeguard them against accidentally getting the disease, members of the public should avoid touching or caressing strange, injured or sick animals. If bitten by a strange, sick or stray animal, wash the wound thoroughly
with soap, preferably under running water, disinfect the wound, seek immediate medical assistance and inform the nurse or doctor that you have had contact with an animal suspicious to have rabies. People wanting more information about the disease or the clinics can contact Ms Keabetwe Ngoetjana at 076 421 8816 or Dr Jaison Mpofu at 082 527 4783.
