A Message from the Executive Director Welcome! And thank you for being part of Montshire Museum’s 2014 benefit auction. It’s always exciting to see the energy and enthusiasm when Montshire’s friends gather together in support of science education. Someday, I envision that our communities and schools will be equally as proud of their achievements in science as they are of our local Olympians. Everyone involved in this effort deserves our sincere thanks. Volunteers, sponsors, donors and YOU are all part of making this event a success. As a guest, you play a critically important role. Every bid you make helps ensure that the Montshire is here for you, your family, and your friends and neighbors. Every dollar raised helps Montshire serve the community with rich educational opportunities. I look forward to seeing you on May 2!

Auction Bidding: How it Works The Silent Auction will be held in the Porter Community Room from 6:00 to 7:50 p.m., and then concluding in the main gallery at approximately 9:20. 

 

The Silent Auction is divided into four sections. All sections open at 6:00 p.m., though closing times vary: 7:30, 7:40, and 7:50; the final section will close 15 minutes after the Live Auction ends. The closing time for each item is listed at the top of the catalog page on which it is described. To bid on an item, write your bidder number (provided upon your arrival) next to one of the preprinted dollar amounts on the bid sheet. You do not have to bid sequentially; feel free to skip ahead. Many items have a “Guaranteed Purchase” price at the bottom of the bid sheet. If you bid at this level, you win the item—no one can outbid you! The highest—or winning—bidder is determined at the close of each item’s section. You may check your status after closing by consulting the duplicate bid sheet left in place. If you wish to leave before the conclusion of the auction, the Cashier’s Desk will be ready for early checkout by approximately 8:30 p.m. Early checkout is only available if your winning bids are in the first three sections of the Silent Auction. You may pay by check, cash, Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Discover. The Live Auction will begin at the conclusion of the Silent Auction in the main gallery. To place a bid, raise your bidder card when the auctioneer calls the amount you wish to bid. If you are the highest (winning) bidder, keep your card raised until your number has been called and recorded.

10

Auction Guidelines The following guidelines are in place to help ensure that this event is enjoyable for guests, a positive experience for donors, and a successful fundraiser for the Museum. •

All auction sales are final and “as is”; there are no exchanges or refunds. Before bidding, please carefully note any restrictions or limitations, indicated or implied. Donors typically estimate the value of each item. Services must be used within one year of the auction date, unless otherwise specified. Please arrange deliveries and appointments directly with the donor if not otherwise noted. All private home, resort, or vacation offerings are intended for adults and their families, if allowed. Adults must accompany minors. These items are not transferable, except by permission of the donor. You will be responsible for any damages incurred. Winning bidders of getaways are responsible for making their own travel arrangements. We cannot guarantee that multiple opportunities will be available at the same time. If you break an item during the auction, you will be financially responsible for the item’s value or the current bid level, whichever is higher. In general, your purchase is a confidential transaction with the Montshire Museum. However, in some cases, your name and contact information must be provided to a donor in order for you to redeem your item or service. All items must be paid for in full and removed by 11 p.m. on auction night, unless you have made other arrangements with Museum staff. You may pay by check, cash, Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Discover at the Cashier’s Desk.

Fund a Need Help Montshire serve the community. “Fund a Need” is an important element of the Silent Auction that allows you to help make the Montshire accessible to everyone. Make a “bid” to make a gift. Everyone wins!

1201 Summer Camp Scholarships Help Montshire provide meaningful summer camp experiences to kids who otherwise couldn’t afford to participate. Your donation of $35 or $65 can help make memories that last a lifetime. (This special opportunity is part of Montshire’s Warm Welcome program.)

“When a child can’t wait to get to camp in the morning and is wildly enthusiastic about his day (everyday), I say (we say) “Bravo” for the experience and the fine program presented.” “A thousand thanks for this summer’s experience!”

1202 $2 School Visits Help Montshire provide low-cost field trips to cash-strapped schools. Each year in January, a dramatically reduced price brings hundreds of children from dozens of schools that can’t afford to visit at our regularly discounted rates. Your donation of $25 or $45 will help continue this special offer and provide a Montshire experience to more than 1,500 schoolchildren each year. (This special opportunity is part of Montshire’s Warm Welcome program.)

“Our school really could not afford to come otherwise.” — Teacher, Rutland, VT

1203 Strengthen Science Education in Rural Schools Help Montshire improve science education in small, rural schools through its School Partnership Initiative. Your donation of $40 or $60 will support teacher professional development, curriculum materials, co-teaching and classroom support, and community science nights at the Museum. The School Partnership Initiative is currently working with 10 schools in Vermont and New Hampshire to build their capacity, over time, for high-quality science education.

“This type of support is exactly what schools need to increase the quality of science learning at the elementary level.” — Jeff Valence, Principal, The Lyme School, Lyme, NH

Live Auction “Fund a Need” Paddle Raise “Warm Welcome” Program In January, the Montshire launched a major new initiative to welcome lowincome families to the Museum, and the community’s response has been tremendous. Your “Fund a Need” donation will help make a variety of learning experiences possible for disadvantaged children and families. • $2,500 provides a specially priced membership to 25 families; • $1,000 provides five summer camp scholarships; • $500 offers 40 people free admission passes, distributed through agencies like the Upper Valley Haven or Listen Community Services; • $250 helps support a community outreach program in a local school or community center; • $100 provides 10 low-income people with a Montshire Museum visit.

“Fund a Need” is a paddle raise that allows you to donate to Montshire’s Warm Welcome program at a level that is right for you. At the end of the Live Auction, we'll take a break from fabulous trips and unique experiences to remember why the auction is so important. Instead of asking for bids, the auctioneer will ask you to make a donation to the Museum. There will be opportunities to participate at $2,500, $1,000, $500, $250, and $100 (in that order). If you would like to participate, raise your bid card when the amount is right for you—please keep your card raised until your number is called and recorded. There's no limit to the number of winning “bids” at each level. Thank you in advance for helping Montshire serve the community!
