egistration for summer programs will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May. 17. Mail-in registrations will be processed in the order they are received. Visa and MasterCard payments are accepted. If the minimum number of participants is not met, the class may not meet, and those who are registered will be notified if the class or activity is cancelled. Upon registration you will receive a confirmation of starting dates and times as printed in the schedule. Refunds are available if requested before the start of the program or activity. Through the midpoint of a program or activity, pro-rated refunds will be considered on a merit basis. Refunds are automatic when programs or activities are cancelled or schedule changes prohibit attendance. In the event that the participant cannot attend the program or activity, he/she must provide notice at least seven (7) days prior to the start of the program or activity, or prior to the registration deadline, in order to receive a full refund. In the event of inclement weather, if Montgomery County schools are closed, then athletic programs are cancelled. 2

Aquatics

The Frog Pond Swimming Pool

The Frog Pond is a great place to hang out and just relax during those hot summer months. This pool has a zero depth entry, for those wanting to take their time and ease into the water and it also has a maximum depth of 8 feet for those who want to make a splash and go right in. The Frog Pond also has a children’s pool equipped with a whale and his water spouting blow hole and a bubbler. The Frog Pond has a total of 5 slides, 4 tube slides and a frog slide, from which you can surely make a splash. There is plenty of room to hang out in the sun. Snow Barn Concessions operates daily. The Frog Pond will be open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. While school is in session, it will only be open on Saturdays and Sundays. Regular hours begin on June 11. New! FAMILY SWIM NIGHTS

Beginning this summer, the Frog Pond will extend its hours on Tuesday nights to 8 p.m. Family Swim Nights will allow everyone to enjoy the Frog Pond after work and have some good family fun! Entry costs to the pool will be the same, but if you still have your receipt from that day, you can stay and keep slashing right on ‘til dark. Come join the fun - we hope to see you there!

SWIM LESSONS New! LONGFELLOW’S WHALE TALES

American Red Cross Longfellow’s WHALE tales provides easy-to-follow instruction to help children learn safe behavior in, on and around the water. Taught in a classroom session, WHALE Tales makes water safety fun and easy to learn. Each lesson is reinforced with color posters, worksheets, activities and a video that features Longfellow, the animated whale. Longfellow’s WHALE Tales includes eight basic lessons: • swim with a buddy in a supervised area; • be cool, follow the rule - the reasons behind water safety rules; • look before you leap - choose safe places to swim and dive; • think so you don’t sink - what to do when things go wrong; • reach or throw, don’t go - safe ways to rescue a swimmer in trouble; • don’t just pack it, wear your jacket - the importance of wearing a life jacket; • cold can kill - knowing the hazards; and • learn about boating before you go floating. This class will take place at the beginning of each session of swim lessons. Pre-registration is required. Aquatics

INFANT and TODDLER LESSONS

(ages 1-4) This program builds swim readiness and confidence in the water with an emphasis on having fun in the water. Parents and children participate in guided activities including bubble blowing, floating on front and back, elementary backstroke, freestyle and underwater swim. This is a Red Cross certified course and includes certificate and booklet. This course is designed to help teach parents the essentials so that they can help teach their child and we do ask that all parents participate in class. This class introduces the swimmer into the beginner forms of Freestyle and Backstroke. This class will meet on Mondays and Thursdays. AMERICAN RED CROSS GUARDSTART: LIFEGUARDING TOMORROW

(ages 11-14) The American Red Cross GuardStart: Lifeguarding Tomorrow program is for youth that provides a foundation of aquatic and leadership knowledge, attitudes and skills for the future that will help prepare 11-14 year olds to successfully complete the Red Cross Lifeguarding courses. To qualify for this course you must be able to complete the following; swim the front crawl for 25 yards continuously while breathing to the front or side, tread water for 1 minute using arms and legs and submerge and swim a distance of 10 feet underwater. Registration deadline is one week prior to start date. GuardStart T-Shirts will be provided. This class will meet only Mondays and Thursdays. $20 DATES July 11-28

SCUBA CERTIFICATION

(ages 10+) Program fee includes books, all rental equipment (including mask, fins, and snorkel), training fees, and certification. This course consists of two weekends of classroom, pool and open water training. Everything is conducted at the Frog Pond swimming pool except the open water certification dives which will be at a site within 15 minutes of Christiansburg. Independent study with an informative manual and DVD is required before the first day of class; you will receive this material when you register. A medical release must be reviewed and you may need a doctor’s approval prior to participation. DISCOVER SCUBA

(ages 10+) If you’ve always wanted to try SCUBA diving, then jump in! Here’s your chance to breathe underwater in a fun, convenient session conducted in a pool, or any pool-like body of water. After a short safety training session, you enter the water ready for your scuba adventure. As soon as you Discover Scuba, you’re on your way to an internationally recognized certification. The skills you learn during your Discover Scuba adventure count toward your Open Water Diver Certification Course. All equipment will be provided. A medical release must be reviewed and you may need a doctor’s approval prior to participation. $45

Rock the Pond

SUMMER BLOWOUT!!!

We will be kickin’ off our Rock the Pond Concert with The Kind at our July 15 Summer Blowout. This band has all the right moves and tunes to get you in gear for summer. The Kind is a hillbilly psychelic folk rock band formed in the New River Valley. They play a variety of styles including classic rock, R&B, jazz, bluegrass and country. The area which they most frequently blend their diverse influence is Grateful Dead covers! Come on down to the Frog Pond and join us for our 2011 Summer Blowout with The Kind! $5 DATES Fri, July 15

All concerts are free with paid entry to the Frog Pond that day; simply show your receipt to the Frog Pond from that day and entry to the concert is free. A voucher will also be provided for free admission to two additional concerts at the Eastern Montgomery Park - dates, times and performers to be announced.

18th CENTURY ENCAMPMENT ALONG THE GREAT ROAD The Great Road was the main thoroughfare going west to the Frontier. It was traveled by the likes of Daniel Boone, Andrew Lewis, William Preston, Adam Harman and the Ingles and Draper families. This event is to honor all the travelers who passed through the valleys of Southwest Virginia in the quest for a better life. It will feature demonstrations by 18th century reenactors and presentations on the history of The Great Road as well as talks by two authors: Mary Kegley, auther of Finding Their Way from the Great Road to the Wilderness Road, 17451796 and Lee Offen, author of Gooch’s American Regiment, 1740-1742, America’s First Marines. Nick Kalenich will also demonstrate 18th century medicine with his Detached Military Hospital. FREE, donations accepted. DATES Sat, Aug 6 Sun, Aug 7

COALMINER SHUFFLE 5K and 10.5K

Join Montgomery County Parks and Recreation for one of the few races on the Huckleberry Trail and the only race to feature the Coal Miner Heritage Park Loop Trail. This event will host two different races: a 3.2 mile (5K) race and a 6.54 mile (10.5K) race. The 3.2 mile race will strictly be held on the Huckleberry Trail while the 6.54 mile race will feature the brand new Coal Miner Heritage Park Loop Trail. Both races will start and finish at the trail entrance behind the movie theatre. Registration fee is $25 for preregistration and $30 on the day of the race. This two-part program will allow you to have some fantastic fun with your child between the ages of two and four. What a better way to spend a Saturday than by making some really great crafts in the morning and splashing around in the Frog Pond in the afternoon. Each date will feature a new event in this order: Sensory Bottles/Magic Wands (June 18); Butterfly Ink Blot/Tambourine (July 9); Bird Feeders (July 30); and Colored Sand/Bread Art (Aug 13).The cost is $16; this includes a pool pass for one adult and one child and all craft materials. After cleaning your house following the winter/spring seasons, you have found a number of items that you can no longer use - but maybe someone else can! This is a great opportunity to sell all your gently-used items for the best price. Declutter your life and get organized - even turn a profit! Sell your maternity and gently used children’s items, toys and clothing. No commercial vendors. All items must be clean, gently used and priced to sell. Set-up for vendors will begin on Saturday, June 11 at 7 a.m. Space is limited! Register for your spot early; spots start at $10. The registration fee will pay for a parking spot of retail space. WOMEN’S SELF DEFENSE CLASS

Do you want to get fit and have fun while learning how to increase your safety awareness and learn self defense skills? This empowering course is designed for women and girls ages 10+. You will learn risk avoidance, risk awareness and defensive techniques such as blocks, strikes and kicks from a certified Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) instructor. Each student will receive a manual which will include all the course material. Classes will be held in the first floor multipurpose room at the Montgomery County Government Center, 755 Roanoke St., Christiansburg, each night except June 21, when it will be held in the second floor multipurpose room. This class will meet on Tuesdays for six weeks. No class will be held July 5. Registration deadline is one week prior to event. $40

ZUMBA!! (Latin dance workout)

Zumba is a Latin-inspired dance-fitness class. The name “Zumba” is derived from a Colombian word meaning “to move fast and have fun.” It fuses Latin and International rhythms with easyto-follow moves to create an exciting, fun workout program for any fitness level! THE “ROWDY DAWG” MOUNTAIN BIKE RACE

(ages 16+) This classic mountain bike race is a must for local mountain bikers. There will be many different classes of riders so come on out! This race is part of a doubleheader weekend that will be led off by the Rowdy Dawg Super D downhill race on Old Farm Trail and the Brush Mountain Breakdown, a half-marathon, 10K and 3K trail run on Saturday, Oct 29. Experience the past on Saturday, Aug. 20, 10AM-3PM at the Montgomery Museum! This popular annual event will feature exhibits of old-time cars, heritage, crafts, tools, machinery and engines. There will be live entertainment, food, games, horse and buggy rides, children’s activities and fun for the entire family. FREE

BASIC SKYWARN SPOTTING TRAINING

This class covers severe weather hazards including flooding, thunderstorms and tornadoes. This includes the general structure and movement of severe thunderstorms, indentification of important storm features and safety concerns. This entertaining and informative 90-minute presentation is open to the general public. If you ever wanted to be an official storm spotter - or you’re just interested in weather, we encourage you to attend. FREE DATE Wed, May 25

EASTMONT TOMATO FESTIVAL

The 4th annual EastMont Tomato Festival will be held Saturday, Aug 13 at the Meadowbrook Community Center. There will be tomato contests, tomato soup, sandwiches, pizzas and fried green tomatoes will be available for purchase along with fresh veggies from Farmers Market vendors. A tomato “catsupult” will provide entertainment. To top off the day, there will be a Tomato Pageant to annoint a Tomato Princess, Tomato Queen and Heirloom Queen for the mature woman. 9


Summer Camps

FROG HOPPERS

(ages 6-10) Frog Hoppers summer day camp is a great way for children to experience education and recreation in the outdoors. This is a well structured camp that will involve small group learning activities in Mid-County Park around the Frog Pond. This camp entails arts and crafts, nature activities and hikes, sports and games, and also includes two weekly swim lessons and free swim time at the Frog Pond. Camp is held daily, rain or shine. Qualified, trained and experienced counselors will initiate the fun and activities that your child will remember forever. Application forms and registration packets are available at the MCPR office Government Center, 755 Roanoke St. in Christiansburg. Camp will be held Monday-Friday and taught in weekly sessions with drop-off after 8AM and pick-up by 5:30PM. A late pick-up fee of $1 per minute will be applied after 5:30PM. Space is limited so register early. We will hold a FREE pool party for all Frog Hopper Camp participants and their families at Montgomery County’s very own Frog Pond swimming pool. JUNIOR MASTER GARDENER DAY CAMP

(grades 3-5) The Hahn Horticulture Garden at Virginia Tech and Montgomery County 4-H are hosting a one-week summer half-day camp based on the Junior Master Gardener program. Participants will be involved in hands-on activities that relate to a nature theme of the day. We will learn about plants, insects, soils, gardening and nutrition. All activities will be fun - yet educational! The day-camp will be led by faculty, staff and experienced volunteers. The fee will cover supplies and a mid-morning snack each day. $50 DATE July 11-15 10

ROCKET CAMP

This camp is designed for children grades five through eight. Spend each morning building and testing your very own model rocket! Propelled by Estes solid rocket engines, our rockets will be built by campers from scratch and tested in an open field on days when wind conditions are appropriate. We will also be visited by one or more adults hobbyists who will demonstrate larger, more advanced rockets! Registration deadline is July 11. $150 DATES Mon-Thurs, July 18-21

LEGO/ROBOTIC CAMP

(grades 4-5) Tired of chores?! Using Lego Mindstorms’ Robotic NXT Invention System you might actually invent a machine to pick up trash or even write your name on your homework! This four-day camp will give children entering the 4th through 6th grades the opportunity to build and program small Lego robots. This is a great experience for any child who is considering joining a Lego League team in the fall. The instructor for this camp is the head coach for the Montgomery County Public Schools robotics team, known nationally as “Team 401.” Your robot will utilize infrared sensors for a new way to control every movement you ask it to perform. GO GREEN CAMP

A 4-day Exploration of Alternative Energy and Sustainable Living. This camp for fourth, fifth and sixth graders will explore the many different ways “Next Generation” alternative energy technologies are being used to power our everyday lives. Each day will have a different theme: wind energy, harness the power of the wind to produce electricity; hydro-electric power, the energy of moving water converted into work and electricity; thermo-solar, infrared energy from the sun is converted to hot water or steam; solar electric, light energy from the sun is converted to electrical current. All campers will visit a local alternative energy vendor AND make and take home their own solar powered vehicle! Registration deadline is June 7. $150 DATES Mon-Thurs, June 20-23

Virginia Techniques is a certified gymnastics teaching organization and is offering a special to those who register for monthly sessions through Montgomery County Parks and Recreation. • Virginia Techniques is in our new location at 1550 Roanoke St., Suite C, Christiansburg • The new training center includes new equipment, in-ground trampoline, foam pit, multipurpose/party room, and more! • No family membership fee is required if signing up through Parks and Recreation; however, only limited classes are available. • Families can become members of VA Techniques Gymnastics to have their choice of all available class times. • Families must complete VTGI registration form and liability waiver. • Registration deadline is one week prior to course start date. BOUNCING BUNNIES

This class is offered to boys and girls ages two and up and requires parent participation. Bouncing Bunnies class will provide parents and their older toddlers an introduction to general gymnastics skills with an emphasis on patterns, exploration, courage and confidence. Students will be introduced to general gymnastics equipment and skills while working with their parents under the supervision of our trained coaches. BOB ROSS JOY of PAINTING

Anyone can do this style of painting once you learn the very simple techniques, from mountains to seascapes, cabins, barns and lakes. Certified Bob Ross instructor (CRI) in landscapes, Bobby Wood, teaches classes to anyone who is interested and uses his skills for art therapy along with private lessons. After each session you will have a completely finished painting to enjoy and show off to friends and family. This class is so easy that children can participate and are encouraged to sign up. Bobby will go through a step by step process and assist each one individually until they have mastered each technique that is taught. All materials are provided from easels to canvases, oil paints, and brushes. Just sign up and learn. This class is for ages 7 and up. Children under the age of 10 are to be accompanied by an adult.

(ages 18+) Learn jazz and tap technique, while getting in some exercise. This class will begin with warm-ups & proceed to instruction in beginning jazz and tap technique to include fun step hip hop. NOVICE DOG CLASS

(adults) Does your dog think his or her name is NO! or maybe OFF! Then this is the class you and your dog need. Some of the exercises to be covered - not jumping up, sit, down, come when called and walking on a loose leash. Owners will gain an understanding of how dogs learn and how to establish a stronger positive relationship with their pet. This course is taught by instructor Joann Michaels. BASIC PISTOL / NATIONAL RIFLE ASSOCIATION CERTIFICATION COURSES

(adults) Co-sponsored by the Shawnee Shooting Sports Club, the NRA Basic Pistol Course instroduces students to the knowledge, skills and attitude necessary for owning and shooting a pistol safely. Through this course, students will learn about pistol parts and operation, ammunition, gun safety, pistol shooting fundamentals and pistol shooting activities. The Basic Course will also help prepare students for participation in other NRA courses. Students will spend six hours in the MCPAC classroom (three hours each on Wednesday and Friday evenings) and at least three hours on the Shawnee Shooting Sports Club’s Range on Saturday. The Shawnee Shooting Sports Club will provide safety equipment, firearms and ammunition for the course. Students will be allowed to bring personal firearms to the Range for practice after the course range exercise is completed. Minimum participants: 6; Maximum: 20. HUNTER EDUCATION CLASS

FIRST STEPS - FIREARM INSTRUCTION, RESPONSIBILITY AND SAFETY TRAINING

(adults) This training is the National Rifle Association’s (NRA) response to the American public’s need for a firearm orientation program for new firearm purchasers. New firearm owners are encouraged to take the “first step” of obtaining training and the NRA FIRST Steps program is designed to provide a hands-on introduction to the safe handling of one specific firearm model. Students will spent two to three hours in the MCPAC classroom, break for lunch (on their own) and gather on the Shawnee Shooting Sports Club’s Range in the afternoon to actually shoot their handgun. Range officers, instructors and coaches will be present to coach each shooter through this process. Each student will supply his/her own handgun and up to 100 rounds of ammunition for that gun, as well as eye and ear protection. Minimum participants: 6; Maximum participants: 17

PERSONAL PROTECTION COURSE

(adult) This course is designed for law abiding citizens who have already mastered safe gun handling, shooting, adjusting and cleaning their firearm. Successful completion of the NRA’s Basic Pistol Course is required for enrollment in this course. Topics addressed include: avoiding the need for a gun, how your home’s design affects defense, cover and concealment tools, safe storage and access, choosing a handgun for home defense, and legal and emotional considerations. Students will spend six hours in the MCPAC classroom (three hours each on Wednesday and Friday evenings) and at least three hours on the Shawnee Shooting Sports Club’s Range on Saturday. Each student should provide his/her own handgun in a defensive caliber (.38/9mm or larger), 100 rounds of ammunition and appropriate eye and ear protection for the range. DISC GOLF

Montgomery County Parks & Recreation has an 18-hole Disc Golf course for you to enjoy. This is a very unique course that consists of wooded fairways, with a variety of elevation gains. It is free to play the course and we just ask that you take out what you bring in. FULL DAY GUIDED FLY FISHING

(ages 6+) You bring your rod and tackle and we take care of the rest. You and your partner will be in either a self-bailing raft or drift boat specifically designed for float fishing. Learning to “wet exit” and practicing the “Eskimo rescue” will help you find a comfort zone in your kayak even when you are upside down! KIDS in KAYAKS

(ages 7-11) This beginning level class will introduce children to the sport of kayaking. The class will focus on the parts of the kayak and all the equipment needed to get started. Learning to get in and out of the kayak, floating in their life jacket (or PFD), practicing basic paddle strokes along with fun games in the pool will be part of the experience. Introducing your child to the sport of kayaking in a fun and controlled environment will help them in getting started in the right direction with proper technique. CANOEING

Floating the scenic waters of Southwest Virginia is a wonder in itself. Bring a snack and lunch in a waterproof bag, plenty of water, and lots of energy for paddling! Participants must be able to swim.

ECO RAFT TOURS

Rafting on our local rivers can bring a new experience on the water! Take an exciting raft trip through the heart of the New River Valley on stable, inflatable rafts. This is a wonderful opportunity for viewing and photographing wildlife while exploring ecological and historical aspects. 21

What better way to explore the New River Valley than a raft float down the river? This trip is designed as a laid back, relaxing float with some exciting class II+ rapids thrown in that will bring you right into nature. DRIFT and DINE ON THE NEW

Some say the evenings are the best time to be on the water. This trip will take us down a short three mile class I, II section where we will experience all the New River has to offer. At the end of the trip we will dine at a local hotspot for evening entertainment. The Palisades is located in the former Pyne’s General Store in Eggleston. This restaurant offers contemporary cuisine in a unique countryside setting, warm hospitality and great food in an historic landmark building. Dinner will be on your own. PADDLE CRAFT FISHING TOURNMENT/DEMO

(ages 12+) This one day tournament is for any type of paddle craft, kayaks, canoes, rafts or even tubes. There will be prizes, and giveaways at the event along with top of the line demo kayaks for you to try out. This will be a Go Green event and all fish will be catch and release. To document your catch you will need a digital camera out on the water to snap a shot of your top two fish. We will have a computer on site to document your photo and a winner will be announced at the end of the day. The tournament will be held at the Whitethorn Public Boat Launch on the New River in Montgomery County. CHEVY YOUTH BASEBALL

Shelor Chevrolet and Chevy Youth Baseball are teaming up once again with Montgomery County Parks and Recreation to help raise money for much-needed baseball equipment and supplies by selling raffle tickets to win two vehicles. LET THE KIDS PLAY SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The Let the Kids Play Scholarship Fund was created several seasons ago to ensure that all kids have the opportunity to play sports and participate in after school programs. The fund pays 75 percent of fees to qualified participants. If you would like to make a donation to the scholarship fund, your help is always appreciated and will only be used in our service areas. Children now more than ever need a chance to run, be on a team, learn from coaches/instructors and have the opportunity to just go play. NRV YOUTH FOOTBALL

This is a full contact youth tackle football league designed to provide instruction in the basics and fundamentals of football and to stress the importance of sportsmanship. The league consists of teams from Montgomery County, Pulaski County, Radford City, Christiansburg and Blacksburg. Participants’ birthday as of Nov. 1, 2010, determines age. Participants will be divided into teams based on age and size. Registration will be held July 1-Aug 13. FORT VAUSE BAND & HELPING HANDS

A unique opportunity for a fun evening in the park with musical entertainment by the Fort Vause Band featuring bluegrass and a bit of country! A kid-friendly event will feature face painting, free lemonade and watermelon provided by the Meadowbrook Library. Those attending the concert are requested to bring “kid-friendly” non-perishable items or make a monetary donation to support the Eastern Montgomery County Food Bank. Summer is an especially difficult time to try and feed children and there are some who have no food at home to eat during the summer or on weekends. Join the fun at our First Annual Ice Cream Social at Eastern Montgomery Park! Sample homemade ice cream and enjoy the sundae ice cream bar. Everyone must bring a topping to share! Parks and Facilities

Eastern Montgomery Park This is Montgomery County’s newest park and is tucked away in the eastern part of the County on the South Fork of the Roanoke River. East Mont Park has some unique amenities such as a model airplane flying strip and a canoe and kayak boat launch into the river. A new playground and walking trail make this a great place to spend time. The shelter is available for rental and has picnic tables, concrete floors and a grill. The Frog Pond The Frog Pond, Montgomery County’s only outdoor public pool, is a beach-entry leisure pool with water slides, fountains, and geysers. The tot’s pool beside the leisure pool provides enjoyment for children under five. The Frog Pond opens yearly Memorial Day weekend. The entire facility is available for rental. Golden Hills Disc Golf Course Golden Hills Disc Golf Course is the only eighteen-hole disc golf course in the region. The course boasts tight fairways with severe elevation changes throughout. The wooded area makes for a very challenging course. Monthly meetings of the Hillbilly Huckers Disc Golf Club as well as several amateur and professional tournaments are held here. Huckleberry Trail As a collaborative effort by Montgomery County, Blacksburg and Christiansburg, Huckleberry Trail is an asphalt-paved bike/pedestrian path constructed on the old Huckleberry Rail Line. The trail currently runs from the Blacksburg Public Library to the New River Mall in Christiansburg. The total distance from the library to the mall is 5.762 miles. McCoy Park Just a 15-minute drive from Blacksburg, McCoy Park features a youth baseball field, a picnic shelter, walking track, and brand new playground equipment. The shelter has picnic tables, concrete floors, and electricity. Both the field and shelter are available for rental. Mid-County Park The largest park in Montgomery County at 110 acres, Mid-County is home to the Activity Center, the Frog Pond, Golden Hills Disc Golf Course, as well as an extensive nature trail system and three shelters. The shelters near the Frog Pond share a detached rest room facility as well as a children’s playground. The shelters all have picnic tables, concrete floors, electricity, and grills. Motor Mile Park Built with donations from the Shelor Motor Group, this tournament-style baseball facility hosts bathrooms, a lighted Dixie regulation baseball/softball field and a multipurpose practice field for a variety of sports. Future plans for this park include a shelter and playground. Plum Creek Park Located in the western part of the County near the city of Radford, Plum Creek Park features a competition-level baseball/softball field, soccer fields, walking track, brand new playground equipment, and a restroom facility. The field is available for rental. 39
