Note Biografiche di Leo Lionni Un artista fra due mondi Parlare di Leo Lionni significa raccontare la storia di una personalità poliedrica: pittore, scultore, grafico, designer, illustratore (anche di libri per bambini), un intellettuale che vive tra due mondi, l’Europa e l’America. Gli ambienti che incontra e gli artisti con cui dialoga e collabora sono fra i più importanti del suo tempo: dai futuristi e Marinetti conosciuti a Milano, agli artisti del Bauhaus in Germania, fino al fecondo ambiente dell’America post-bellica dove è a contatto con Saul Steinberg, Ben Shahn, Robert C. Osborn, Willem de Kooning, Fernand Léger, e diviene grande amico di Alexander Calder. Di origine olandese, nato ad Amsterdam nel 1910, aveva iniziato a dipingere a Genova, quando si era trasferito con la famiglia in Italia, Leo Lionni è costretto ad emigrare negli Stati Uniti, come molti intellettuali del suo tempo, a seguito delle persecuzioni razziali del 1939. Vive a New York, città divenuta il centro propulsivo della nuova cultura artistica, assume il ruolo di art director di Fortune e Print, riviste innovative nel campo della comunicazione, diviene docente di grafica al Black Mountain College, una sorta di “Bauhaus americano”, diretto dall’artista Joseph Albers. Nel 1954 espone la sua opera grafica al Museum of Modern Art di New York. Negli anni Cinquanta continuano i suoi riconoscimenti nell’ambito della grafica e nel 1955 è eletto presidente dell'AIGA (America Institut of Graphic Art). Negli Anni Sessanta torna in Italia e si stabilisce a Radda in Chianti, in provincia di Siena, nel 1964 Mondadori lo chiama a dirigere il mensile Panorama e nel 1984 vince la medaglia d’oro dell’Aiga, mentre la rivista giapponese Idea lo giudicò tra i trenta designers più influenti del ventesimo secolo, sancendo così il suo riconoscimento mondiale.
Biographical notes of Leo Lionni: an artist between two worlds Speaking of Leo Lionni means telling the story of a multifaceted personality: painter, sculptor, graphic designer, illustrator (including children's books), an intellectual living between two worlds, Europe and America. The environments he meets and the artists with whom he collaborates are among the most important of his time: from the futurists movement and Marinetti, known in Milan, to the artists of the Bauhaus in Germany, to the fertile environment of post-war America where he is in contact with Saul Steinberg, Ben Shahn, Robert C. Osborn, Willem de Kooning, Fernand Léger, and becomes a great friend of Alexander Calder. Of Dutch origin, born in Amsterdam in 1910, he began to paint in Genova when he moved with his family to Italy, Leo Lionni is forced to emigrate to the United States, as many intellectuals of his time, because of racial persecution of 1939. He lives in New York, a city that has become the driving force behind the new art culture, takes on the role of art director of Fortune and Print, an innovative magazine in the field of communication, becomes a teaching professor at Black Mountain College, a kind of "American Bauhaus" directed by artist Joseph Albers. In 1954 he exhibited his graphic works at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In the 1950s he continued to get awards in the field of graphics and in 1955 he was elected President of the AIGA (America Institute of Graphic Art). In the Sixties he returned to Italy and settled in Radda in Chianti, in the province of Siena, in 1964 Mondadori called him to direct the monthly magazine “Panorama” and in 1984 he won the gold medal of the Aiga, while the Japanese magazine Idea judged him one of the thirty most influential designers of the twentieth century, thus sanctioning its worldwide recognition.
