Head Coach

Larry Donovan (N ebrask a, 1 9 6 4 )

Born March 31, 1941, D onovan cam e to UM from the University of Kansas, w here he was outside linebacker coach. Prior to that he was at the University of Iowa for three seasons as offensive line and quarterback coach. From 1972-75 he was an assistant at W ashington State w here he was defensive line coach for two seasons, and then defensive coordinator for two years. H e had m oved to WSU from South D akota, w here he coached from 1967 to 1971. H e began his coaching career at his alm a m ater, w here he served as a graduate assistant at the University of Nebraska w hen the C ornhuskers w on the O range Bowl. H e then serv­ ed in Korea as a lieutenant and was aw arded the Army C om ­ m endation Medal. H e stayed active in football in Korea, playing and coaching his division team to an 8-0-1 record. D onovan played linebacker/tight end at N ebraska and his 1963 team beat Miami of Florida, 36-34, in the G otham Bowl and was 9-2. He received his B.A. in ’64 and was commissioned through the ROTC program at N ebraska. H e earned his m aster’s in Secondary Education in 1968 at S outh D akota. Larry and his wife, Georgia, have three daughters, Andrea, Molly and Lindsay.

Larry R. D onovan is beginning his sixth season as head coach at the University of M ontana. His overall career record is 22-29-1 an d 14-21 in Big Sky C onference gam es. In 1981 he guided the Grizzlies to a 7-3 record — the fifth best record in school history and a 5-2 second place con­ ference finish. The following year he gave M ontana its first football cham pionship in 12 seasons, and UM advanced to the 1-AA national playoffs. Also in 1981 D onovan was honored by the G reat Falls O p­ timist Club, which sponsors the annual M ontana Sports B an­ quet, by nam ing him the state’s C oach of the Y ear. In 1982 he was n am ed the Boss of the Y ear by the Professional Secretaries International. He is currently District 8 and 9 C hairm an of the American Football C oaches Association Division 1-AA All-American C om m ittee. H e is also a m em ber of the District 8 Football Rules C om m ittee, one of three representatives. Active in local organizations, D onovan was C hairm an of the Team s Division for the YMCA Fund Drive, on the Board Directors for United W ay and active in the B .A .S .H . drive for Loyola High School. During his tenure at UM he has coached four AllA m ericans. At the academ ic level has coached two AllA m ericans and 11 All-District selections.
