About the Chamber of Commerce The Monmouth Area Chamber of Commerce was established in 1912 and is a not-for-profit organization which promotes the growth and prosperity of its members as well as the Monmouth community. The Chamber works to promote economic growth, tourism, legislative involvement, and serves as a community information center. The Chamber keeps a full calendar of activities throughout the year for members to network and learn more about the business world. Monthly Monmouth on the Move Luncheons, are held the first Wednesday of each month and feature local speakers who cover current business topics. The Monmouth Home Show in February showcases area merchants’ products and services for the home in preparation for spring home projects. The Annual Dinner is held in March and recognizes Chamber board members in appreciation of their service. The “Citizen of the Year” award is given at the Annual Dinner in recognition of the winner’s outstanding business leadership and community involvement. Also at the Annual Dinner the “Business of the Year” award is given to a small and large business who have given back to the community, demonstrated a unique or innovative business approach or technology, offer outstanding customer service, and strong business ethics. The Ladies Appreciation Day Luncheon in April and the Golf Outing in May are events where members can network and socialize. In June, the Chamber hosts the Pottery on the Square in collaboration with the Collectors of Illinois Pottery and Stoneware. This event promotes tourism by bringing pottery collectors to Monmouth to participate in a pottery swap meet and gives residents and visitors the opportunity to learn more about vintage pottery from knowledgeable collectors. June through October, the Chamber host the Monmouth Farmers Market at the corner of North Main Street and West Boston. Educational seminars are also presented each fall over the lunch hour for businesses to attend. Their active Shop Local program includes a traveling Make It Monmouth, Shop Local banner which is featured in the monthly Chamber newsletter and on the Chamber’s Facebook page. The program also provides the option to purchase Maple City Money at the Chamber, gift certificates that can be used at any Chamber member business. Businesses and organizations both large and small come together to make up the Monmouth Area Chamber of Commerce. Their participation and support keep the Chamber running successfully to advance the interests of our community. 3

Founded in 1831, Monmouth owes much of its rich heritage to the fertile western Illinois prairie from which it sprang, with many of its key industries derived from the abundant local natural resources. From its early days as a hub for grain and livestock commerce, the strategically located county seat grew steadily, but with the coming of the railroad began an industrial explosion as a manufacturing center, supplying the United States’ westward expansion with such staples as farm implements, stoneware, soap and cigars. The first settlers came to the area as early as 1828 and two years later the county of Warren was organized, at that time encompassing what is now Henderson County and stretching west to the Mississippi River. The young surveyor Abraham Lincoln occasionally entered deeds here, while Stephen A. Douglas often presided over the circuit court, including a celebrated 1841 hearing in which he ruled the Mormon prophet Joseph Smith could not be extradited on murder charges. Both Lincoln and Douglas would return to Monmouth to speak during the hotly contested 1858 senatorial race. City leaders supported an initiative to found a Presbyterian academy in Monmouth, and in 1856 that academy received a state charter to become Monmouth College. During its formative years, students from the college would play an active role in the Civil War and in founding two of the first women’s fraternities in the nation—Pi Beta Phi and Kappa Kappa Gamma. Despite its modest size, Monmouth was home to a number of influential individuals, most notably the frontier marshal Wyatt Earp, who was born here in 1848. The renowned illusionist Will Nicol (The Great Nicola) was a native of Monmouth, as was world pocket billiards champion Ralph Greenleaf. Modern dance pioneer Loie Fuller, Panama Canal chief engineer John Findlay Wallace and President Ronald Reagan all attended grade school in Monmouth. J.B. Herbert, a prolific 19th-century composer of popular and religious music, made his home in Monmouth. The Maple City—Monmouth’s longtime nickname—also holds the distinction of having the first library building erected in Illinois “as a people’s library” and the state’s longest continuously operating airport. While Monmouth’s industrial past is today mostly a memory, the city retains much of its historic character through its well preserved downtown district and the fine Victorian homes that still grace many of its neighborhoods. The city’s colorful history and many of its historical artifacts are carefully preserved in the new Warren County History Museum on South Sunny Lane.

Agriculture Agriculture is a huge part of Warren County and has been since the 1800’s. The War of 1812 prompted the settling of Warren County and soldiers that completed their service were given ¾ tracts of land which had been deemed good for farming. Warren County was also the home of the Pattee Plow Company and the Weir Plow Company. Today, approximately seventy-five percent of Warren County consists of farm ground. The average farm size is 516 acres. Majority of the crops planted are corn, soybeans, and wheat. You may also find hay, oats and orchards. As of January 1, 2013 Warren County was the leading Illinois County in number of sheep and number five in the number of beef cows in Illinois. In addition to that, Monmouth is the location of Farmland Foods which is a hog processing plant. Warren County is also the home of Monsanto Education and Research Center. Warren County is proud of its rich agriculture history and thankful for all that agriculture contributes to Warren County today. Location & Transportation Monmouth is set in West Central Illinois and is conveniently located less than four hours away from Chicago and St. Louis and less than an hour away from Galesburg, Peoria, Macomb, Burlington and the Quad Cities area. Two highways, U.S. Highway 67, which runs north and south and U.S. Highway 34, which runs east and west, connect Monmouth to these destinations. I-74, which links to Peoria, is just 20 miles east of Monmouth in Galesburg. Monmouth also has public transportation available through Warren Achievement Center’s shuttle bus for trips in town (please see their advertisement below for a schedule of stops). Amtrack services are available in both Galesburg and Macomb. For a train schedule, call their stations at (800) 8727245 for Galesburg or (800) 872-7245 for Macomb. Regional freight shipping is handled by the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad in Galesburg. They can be reached at (309) 345-6454. Arts & Culture The Buchanan Center for the Arts is a unique asset to the Monmouth community. Founded by Grace Buchanan [1894-1985], the Buchanan Center carries out Grace’s goal of instilling appreciation for art, music, dance, and theater in our lives. Their designation as Warren County’s local art agency allows the Buchanan Center to grant Illinois Arts Council funds to local arts groups, organizations and schools. The Buchanan Center provides regular art exhibits, classes, and theater productions throughout the year including: the Annual Town and Country Exhibit which features the artwork of local school children, the national juried exhibition 64 ARTS, and fall and spring plays for children in partnership with Monmouth College’s Theater Department. They often have live music performances, discussion groups, author readings, storytellers, film festivals and other special events. The Center also hosts the Tromp-as-Writ Weavers Guild each week. Be sure to stop in and see their current exhibition during your visit and check out their gift shop featuring work by local and regional artists as well as Fair Trade items. The Maple Leaf Community Concert Series brings world class entertainment to Monmouth performing at the Dahl Chapel & Auditorium on the Monmouth College campus. The concerts feature classical, Broadway, gospel, tributes to well-known groups and a variety of other professional artists that bring outstanding performances to the stage. Monmouth College’s Len G. Everett Galleries, located in Hewes Library, feature exhibits of art and antiquities from the college’s permanent collection, as well as rotating exhibits by regional, national and student artists. The college’s newly opened Fusion Theatre in downtown Monmouth is a versatile space with a black-box auditorium which can seat up to 150. Created in partnership with the community of Monmouth, it includes an art gallery and serves as a gathering place for many community groups The Warren County Public Library has been an important part of our community since 1868. With branches in Monmouth, Alexis, Kirkwood, and Roseville, the library works hard to provide our county with the educational and cultural resources we need. The library has a Genealogy and Local History Room that is open each Tuesday from 10:00 am-4:00 pm or by appointment. For those interested in the latest technology, the library has a tablet that may be checked out and an extensive e-library for books on your home e-reader or tablet. They also keep an active schedule of events including free movies for children and teens after school, story time for babies and toddlers, and a knitting and crocheting circle every other Saturday morning. Education
Monmouth College Founded in 1853 with direct support from the community, Monmouth College honors its historic ties to the city of Monmouth by welcoming the public to campus throughout the year for cultural, educational and athletic events, most of them free. The college boasts one of the most beautiful residential campuses in the United States, with outstanding academic buildings and residence halls, first-class athletic facilities, an acoustically superb performance auditorium, a modern library with coffee shop, and two versatile theatres (including a new experimental theater in downtown Monmouth). An educational garden, a small research farm and a 16-acre nature preserve provide opportunities for enjoying and interacting with nature. A weekly ecumenical service in the college chapel is open to the community. The most recent addition to campus, the $40 million Center for Science and Business, contains a planetarium and greenhouse, and houses all of the science departments as well as mathematics, business/economics and accounting. The 138,000-square-foot facility is designed to promote interdisciplinary teaching and collaborative research across the sciences and business. Connections with the larger community are supported through the Wackerle Career and Leadership Center, whose professional staff members assist students in identifying internship possibilities, including positions with local businesses and organizations. Monmouth-Roseville #238 Monmouth-Roseville Community School District #238 serves a diverse student body of over 1,700 students from the Monmouth and Roseville communities. Their K-12 curriculum is mapped to the Common Core Standards in order to prepare their students for the rigors of post-secondary schooling or employment. The Monmouth-Roseville CUSD #238 Board of Education entered into an agreement with McDonough Telephone Cooperative to be an anchor tenet for installation of fiber optic internet access for their school district. The fiber optic internet access will allow staff and student access to the bandwidth needed in today’s 21st Century classroom. Their technology improvements coupled with engaging student lessons will prepare their students for future academic and employment opportunities. In partnership with parents and the community, the district seeks to continuously improve and grow. United Community #304 The United Community Unit School District #304 serves over 900 students from Warren, Mercer, and Henderson Counties. The district consists of four attendance centers that include two PK-5th grade buildings, a 6th-8th grade junior high school, and a 9th-12th grade high school campus. The district offers a balanced, well rounded educational program that prepares students for both higher education as well as immediate entry into the workforce. The high school offers a number of Advanced Placement and dual credit courses so that their most aggressive students can earn college credit while still in school. Others choose to take their vocational education courses and develop trade skills that will provide immediate access to workplace opportunities after graduation. Their junior high offers a core curriculum that prepares students for the rigors of high school, while still offering a taste of electives through nine week exploratory programs in technology, Art, Industrial Arts, and Health. Their elementary buildings provide a firm basis for all learning. A tremendous focus on teaching reading at the primary grade levels has proven to be beneficial to all of their students throughout their educational careers. Recent security upgrades create some of the safest and most welcoming learning environments possible. Students continue to achieve at high levels and 92% of the most recent graduating class continued their education at the next level. Continued growth within the district boundaries sets the United School District up for great relationships with its industries and residents. Many healthcare options in the Monmouth area are available and keep our residents happy and healthy. OSF Holy Family Medical Center and OSF Holy Family Rural Health Clinic is located at 1000 West Harlem Avenue in Monmouth. OSF Holy Family provides Monmouth and the surrounding communities with a wide range of medical and surgical services all conveniently located on the hospital campus. They offer unrivaled patient comfort, flexible visiting hours, ample parking, and access to a wide variety of specialist services including Podiatric Care. OSF Holy Family also provides outpatient services that include traditional services as well as a Sleep Lab and a Diabetes Center. The OSF Holy Family Rural Health Clinic provides primary and pediatric health care services from their team of physicians, advanced practice providers, and nurses that are there to serve you with the greatest care and love. Home healthcare is available through OSF Home Care and Western Illinois Home Health Care should patients need quality care in the comfort of their home. Industry & Economic Development
Monmouth has many opportunities for growing businesses both new and existing. Several Monmouth businesses have recently completed construction projects and renovations to improve or expand their business and give a vibrant new look to their facility. In addition, Monmouth’s downtown offers some renovated retail and office space that is available for rent. Cloverleaf Cold Storage Company announced it will open a $30 million refrigerated warehouse and distribution center that will create 155 local full-time jobs. The facility will serve the Smithfield Farmland Corporation, which has an adjacent site in Monmouth. The new facility will encompass 250,000 square feet, is expected to be completed by the end of March 2015. The Illinois Small Business Development Center (ISBDC) at Western Illinois University, Monmouth’s City Hall, and the Monmouth Area Chamber of Commerce are three helpful resources when looking to start a new business or take a business to the next level. Parks & Recreation Since 1924, the Monmouth Park District has been providing residents with great locations for outdoor recreation. The Monmouth Park, located 1312 North 11th Street, includes picnic shelters, playground equipment, a new frisbee golf course, baseball diamond, basketball courts, and tennis courts. Gibson Woods Golf Course is a public 18 hole, par 71 course located at Monmouth Park. It is the proud home course of eight IHSA state champion teams. The Warren County YMCA offers eight different membership categories to make membership accessible to everyone. The YMCA stands for youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Our local YMCA features youth and adult sports, both indoor and outdoor, such as basketball, volleyball, softball, soccer, flag football, and baseball. Community Events
Monmouth Cruise Night The first Friday of each August, Monmouth hosts one of the largest car shows in Illinois, the Monmouth Cruise Night. Cruise Night is sponsored by the local Maple City Street Machines Club. Approximately 3,000 vehicles were shown at Cruise Night and more than 25, 000 people attended last year. In addition to classic cars, the show also features unique food vendors and live music. The show has been going strong for fifteen years. The Prime Beef Festival is a community tradition that began in 1948 when Monmouth supplied the most beef to Chicago, earning Monmouth the nickname the “Prime Beef Center of the World.” In addition to prime beef steer and hog shows, the festival has evolved over the past 65 years to include a parade, a princess pageant, demolition derby, industrial tent, strong man competition, and fair rides. The festival is always held the Wednesday through Saturday following Labor Day.
