Filmmaking Our sessions are run by award-winning director and editor Tom Newman of Summer Isle Films. Devise, direct and produce film content for The Mix and our external clients. You will have the chance to gain real-life experience in all aspects of film production such as editing, storyboarding, scriptwriting, visual effects and acting.

Music The Mix Tape

Be taken through the process of song writing, recording and performing. Make a pop video, promotional artwork and photos. Learn all aspects of commercial music making from our practitioner Dan Turner, an experienced industry insider. Best suited for young musicians who are looking to expand and develop their existing skills.

Photography Led by Selina Taylor these sessions offer an introduction to digital photography. Over the sessions you will learn different techniques to make the most of your pictures. Sessions will take place at The Mix as well as on location around Stowmarket. Use one of our cameras or bring your own. Previous sessions have included food styling, portraiture, and a vintage fashion shoot.

Creative Writing Ever wanted to tell a story? Over the 10 weeks of the course, you will develop a portfolio of scenes, monologues and sketches and will build toward writing, workshopping and editing your own short play for stage or radio. This is a practical introduction to the creative writing process. Mix theory and technique with drama and writing exercises to help unlock your creativity and improve your skills. You will also gain an understanding of status, character development, dialogue and other essential elements of script work.

Music Get into Music

Get into our very own recording studio with our resident producer and sound engineer of Vorpal, Ryan Currell. With a hands-on introduction to music you can have a go at song writing, playing, recording and producing. Starts: Time: Cost:

Get into Sound Design

Discover what goes into making your favourite TV shows, films and computer game sounds. Learn how to create and record your own sound FX and synchronise them to the on screen action. Create your own musical score using a huge selection of virtual instruments. You will also have the chance to be involved with the development and creation of sound and music for The Mix’s very own mobile app.​ Starts: Time: Cost:

Digital Game Making Delve into Arduino hardware programming, with the internationally renowned chiptune musician and game designer Matthew Applegate. Using Arduino a dialect of Java, learn how to create interactive hardware and learn the fundamentals of hardware programming. “We are going to make things go beep and make flashy lights flash. It is very good fun.” Every eight week course has an option to do a CREST or Arts Award and comes with introductory booklets in each area. Mixed Voice Mixed Voice is The Mix’s youth panel; they get involved in loads of different opportunities within The Mix. As a member of Mixed Voice you might attend events, give presentations, sit on decision panels, discuss campaigns, represent The Mix and organise The Mix events. The Mixed Voice team work together at meetings, away days and keep in touch by phone and social media to create amazing opportunities for young people in Mid Suffolk. Mixed Voice is recruiting young people now. Urban Ateles Urban Ateles are the only teachers of Parkour and FreeRunning in Suffolk. Classes are based around the French art form Le Parkour along with body conditioning exercises which help hone the muscles for Parkour.

Little SODS Stowmarket Operatic and Dramatic Society SODS (Stowmarket Operatic & Dramatic Society) Youth Group is open to young people aged between 8 and 16. The youth group provides local young people with the opportunity to perform drama, learn new theatre skills and techniques and most importantly, have fun! We operate in a friendly, encouraging and positive environment, and we are always looking for more people to join us. Little SODS’ meet every Wednesday evening during term time at The Mix. A typical session includes a warm-up, drama exercises, games, movement, singing and working on pieces for performance. In the Spring term the group will be starting to rehearse for their summer production which this coming year will be a musical. Rehearsals will be tailored to the group so that every member has plenty to do each week and in the show itself. Zombie Film Night Alternative Valentine’s Night out! Opening Night of The Living Dead, rated 12.

“The entire house of Capulet have turned into killer, brain eating zombies, and you’re worried about the end of Act 5?....” An amateur dramatic society decide that their production of Romeo and Juliet must go on.....despite the zombie apocalypse. Opening Night of the Living Dead is the first project produced by Suitcase Films. This group of local filmmakers came together with the goal of using and improving their skills as Camera Operators, Directors, Actors, Sound and Lighting Engineers and Producers. The film was funded through the online crowd funding website Kickstarter. The Opening Night team includes, Joshua Dickinson, Joe Leat, Nick Williamson, Tim Leat, Callum Hale. Zombie make up was provided by Tim Quinton, Ally Boyd and Clive Double. Also showing, a zombie film produced by our own talented youth group. Come in fancy dress and get suitably made up by professional theatre make-up artists.

Suffolk County Council The Mix is the office base of Suffolk County Council Integrated Services who work with 0-25 year olds and their families. Integrated Services also include Children’s Centres, Community Development, School Nursing and Health Visiting. Our goals are to deliver early help to enable children, young people and families to make things better for themselves and work with communities to achieve positive change. The Matthew Project At the Matthew Project we work with young people who are finding their drug and/or alcohol use is becoming a problem for them or those around them, and with those who are being affected by someone else using. We won’t judge...we are here to help. The Matthew Project delivers drug and alcohol awareness sessions across East Anglia, in schools, youth groups and for professionals and parents.
