Corporate Counsel Monash Health Corporate Counsel, Mr John Snowdon and Legal Counsel, Ms Vicky Hammond provide legal support as required from time to time to Ms Malar Thiagarajan, Director of Research Services who is also a lawyer and has primary responsibility for the provision of all legal advice pertaining to research projects including the review of all research agreements and indemnities.

Monash Health HREC B chaired by Dr Simon Bower was ranked in 2nd place as 80% of all research project applications were reviewed and approved within 30 days. The Chairs of the Human Research Ethics Committees in 2012 were: HREC A Professor Mel Korman, HREC B Dr Simon Bower, and the Medical Administrators to the HRECs in 2012 were Dr James Doery, Dr Ian Woolley (until July 2012) and Professor Andis Graudins (from July 2012).

Human Research Ethics Committees

The Low Risk Review Panel reviews proposals which range from surveys, and data collection studies, through to quality assurance projects which involve minor privacy concerns.

There are two Human Research Ethics Committees (HRECs) at Monash Health. The committees operate in accordance with the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research (NHMRC, 2007).

The Therapeutics Committee, led by Professor Richard Harper, Chair, and Mr Ian Larmour, Executive Officer, reviews all drug trials and provides advice to the committees.

The HRECs meet monthly, except in January, to review research applications for proposals involving patients and staff at Monash Health. The HRECs are supported by Ms Malar Thiagarajan, Director of Research Services, Ms Deborah Dell, Administrative Officer, Ms Julie Gephart, Administrative Assistant and Mrs Heather Jackson, Secretary. The Monash Health HRECs have been ranked as the top 2 HRECs in Victoria for performance in the streamlined ethical review of multi-centre clinical trials over 3 years between November 2009 to November 2012 by the Consultative Council for Clinical Trial Research (previously known as Consultative Council for Human Research Ethics).
