An artist’s perspective How Vicki Flynn was inspired to create her unique resin art Vicki Flynn was introduced to resin art b by her daughter Rachael. “She saw there was a class for resin happening in Sydney, where she Syd lives and she said, ‘Come on, Mum. Let’s do this.’ That was wa the start of the story, says Vicki. sto Rachael owns a Rach graphic design gra business, and she bu and Vicki have a always shared a love for creativity. “I was always doing crafty things with the kids as they were growing w up, says Vicki. u Experimenting and learning about the different techniques and techniq products is what Vicki enjoys most about making her resin art. Mixing together the resins, adding colours and then pouring tthem onto MDF

cut outs, she says you only have about half an hour to work with them. “I have to be very prepared and really think about what I want to do before I start so I have everything I need set up and ready to go. The resin takes 24 hours to set, and Vicki says you can go back and add more coats, or sand it back. “There are lots of different kinds of resins. Some are really fluid and others are more like glue and you don’t get much movement. So I pour on the resin, which I add colours to first, and then I pick up the MDF and tip it to let the resin move and create patterns. “I have learnt to understand the colours too, as some like black and white are dominant and different to work with. “I usually start a project with some colours in mind. I might decide I’m in a blue kind of mood, so I will choose another few colours to complement it. Vicki sells some of her resin work in Pacific Furniture Cooma. “Tracey in Pacific Furniture was kind enough to take my art in, says Vicki. “I was very nervous about taking it there as I really do my art for me, as a hobby and I am my own biggest critic. I don’t like to be in the spotlight. Vicki says although she would work with resin every day if she could, it is quite expensive to buy at about $40 per litre. “I do a lot of work with cement, creating crafty things, because I can buy it for just $10 a bag.

“I am always looking for something to be creative with. I have even got into making some jewellery lately, as well as acrylic painting. Vicki has donated some of her resin art works to some local causes, including the Louie Mould Fundraising Night and the Nimmitabel Country Club. Vicki’s works can be seen on her Instagram page called 2548art. 2548 is the postcode at Merimbula. Vicki and her family often visit Merimbula when they need to get away from their busy lives. Being in Merimbula inspires a lot of Vicki’s artworks, especially the beach and the water.
