Despite the challenges thrown up by the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown, the Deep Roots Festival gets underway this month.
The flagship project of Arts Destination South Molton, it aims to bring together a broad mix of online and live events; community poetry projects, classical/folk/ popular music, exhibitions, talks and demos. In 2021 it spans three weekends, in June, July and September.
This year there is a special ‘legacy’ element to the festival. Devon based poet, Rosie Jackson and filmmaker, Gordon McKerrow will work with South Molton’s community to create a film-poem ‘Capturing South Molton in Words and Images’, and everyone is welcome to join in! The film will be of images you have taken or made - photos, videos, paintings, sketches, and your voices reading
lines you’ve written. These will be edited together, making a “vibrant celebration” of our community, to capture this time as we come out of lockdown. To get involved go to: artsdestination.co.uk/mysouthmolton
Among the festival highlights are Radio 4 Slam winner, performance poet Liv Torc (pictured left). Her climate change in the face of motherhood poem, ‘The Human Emergency’, recently went viral. Acclaimed North Devon singer-songwriter Jim Jones (pictured right) will be giving a solo performance live on Zoom to close out the June section of the festival.
For a full programme of events in the Deep Roots Festival see the advert in the What’s On section on page 11- the advert space has been donated by Molton Monthly in support of this community event.
