In 1983, the United Nations Secretary-General invited her to establish and chair the World Commission on Environment and Development. In 1987, the Commission published the Bruntland report (“Our Common Future”) containing the famous definition of sustainable development, which unifies the notions of well-being and economic growth with respect for the environment and preservation of natural resources for future generations. 133
