A viga Vierendeel é um sistema estrutural composto de barras unidas por nós rígidos formando quadros. O uso de ligações rígidas se faz necessário, conforme visto nos exemplos anteriores, pelo fato de um quadro com nós articulados não ser estável. As barras na viga Vierendeel, além dos esforços de tração e compressão axiais, também estão sujeitas a esforços de flexão. Em vista disso, normalmente é exigida uma quantidade maior de material, fazendo que a estrutura seja mais robusta se comparada a uma treliça. Esse sistema pode ser uma alternativa ao uso da treliça. Em geral, opta-se pela viga Vierendeel quando, por exemplo, as diagonais interferem na estética ou na funcionalidade do edifício.
The Vierendeel truss is a structural system composed of bars linked through rigid joints, creating frames. The use of rigid connections is necessary due to the fact that a frame with articulated connections is not stable, as evidenced by previous examples. The Vierendeel truss bars, in addition to tension and compression stresses, are subject to bending stresses. Because of this, more material is usually required, making this structure heavier in comparison with a standard truss. This system can be an alternative to the truss. In general, the Vierendeel truss is selected when the diagonal members interfere in the aesthetics or in the functionality of the building, for instance.
