Established in the year 1989 at Kolkata, Friends of Tribals Society (FTS) is a non – government and voluntary organisation committed towards upliftment of the underprivileged rural and tribal masses in India. It is providing fivefold education namely Functional Literacy, Health Care / Arogya, Development Education / Gramothan, Empowerment, Ethics & Value Education / Sanskar.

Holistic development of remote tribal villages of India by imparting functional education consisting of literacy, healthcare, economic development and empowerment.

FTS is generally active in remote villages for creating atmosphere for learning of fundamental skills. The school runs for 3 hrs for 6 days a week with average of 30 students. Starting with prayer, the core aim is to teach them basic skills of Reading, Writing, Basic Arithmetic, General Science, Basic Social study, Physical activities, Songs, Short stories, Handicrafts, etc for the overall development of the students.

Our activities have been acknowledged with the prestigious Gandhi Peace Prize 2017 handed over by the President of India Shri Ram Nath Kovind along with the Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi at a glittering function held at Rashtrapati Bhawan on 26th February 2019. Currently, FTS is having a wide network of 34 chapters in all over India to serve the rural and tribal community in a better way.

FTS runs One Teacher School (OTS) or Ekal Vidyalaya, which imparts non-formal primary education to children between 6 and 14 years of age. OTS is typically comprises of 25 – 30 children of classes I – III. The duration of the classes is about three hours.

FTS runs more than 35,000 OTSs in 34 states and along with other associates are running more than 60,000 OTS in India and Nepal. FTS is involved in five – fold education which includes Functional Literacy at Primary Level, Health – Care / Arogya, Rural Development / Gramothan, Empowerment Education / Jagran and Ethics & Value / Sanskar Education. n Bharat Lok ShikSha PariShad
