SOCIAL HOUSING

Mohit

We had an opportunity to collaborate with the City of Phoenix to give them a vision for Social Housing located at a Site in South Phoenix. My project envisions creating a mutually inclusive and diverse community focused on providing co-living, interactive and inside- out spaces to bring different demographics of young individuals together, especially those who are transiting out of a supported residential housing environment like living with family or friends.

The project tends to redefine the use of spaces by giving community and interactive areas. The idea here is to create semi – open spaces that can be utilized to make meaningful connections that not only happen inside the home, but outside the home as well. The housing is integrated with landscape to reduce the microclimate of the site and the building orientation helps in shading the gathering areas during daytime. To enhance the economic development of the region, it has also been integrated with commercial spaces which will help in creating more job opportunities.

The project will create a landmark due to its prominent location in axis to downtown phoenix and remarkable access to public transport right in front of the site that includes light rail, bus stop and the bus terminal. Towards the residential neighboring areas, the density of the residents has been increased and opened to rest of the public to bring them in, while keeping the security of the residents in mind.

The commercial space also has been opened for public access with the public approaching through transiting by bus or train. The vehicular and pedestrian movement here have been separated to provide clear access for each of them. The first and second floor here are allocated for commercial activities along with the leasing office and residential amenities like gym, recreational areas, conference rooms etc.

The site can accommodate about a total number of 126 units with vertical cores being provided separately for each building. Creating semi-open terrace gardens for public and residents is also major highlight of the project where several social activities can take place. This is in response to the low density and low economic activities in the region.

The design, use of materials and research done to integrate these activities form innovative design solutions in terms of lower energy consumption by giving proper building orientation and using simple design methods to full extent.

SWOT ANALYSIS

Integrating Landscape

• The 15% baseline is lower than the 25% tree and shade canopy goal that the City Council approved in January 2010 as part of its Tree and Shade Master Plan.

• Some south Phoenix neighborhoods are 10 degrees hotter than those in central Phoenix or in other places

• According to a city report, achieving tree equity means “all of Phoenix’s neighborhoods will reach a minimal standard of tree canopy cover that is feasible and appropriate for the city’s desert climate and conditions by 2030.”
