As one of Canada’s first colleges to offer co-operative education, we know the value it offers to students and employers.

With over 50 years of experience, Mohawk College remains committed to providing its students and employer partners with enriching and rewarding co-op experiences.

Benefits of co-op

Co-operative Education supports academic learning with practical work experiences, providing a competitive edge upon graduation. Co-op work terms also provide students with the ability to explore career options, gain relevant employment skills, expand professional networks, and offset tuition costs.

What is a work term?

• Full-time work, in blocks of four, eight or 12 months

• Four-month terms, based on an average of 35 hrs/wk

• Related to the student’s program of study

• Students are paid by the employer

• Alternates between full-time study and full-time employment across an academic program

Mohawk offers 24 programs that include a co-operative education option

Over 3,000 students participate in a co-op work term annually

Work-terms range from 4 – 12 months in length

Mohawk works with over 1,100 employers

Students earn on average $10,000 per semester

Co-operative education information

Mandatory co-op

For mandatory co-op programs, students apply directly to the co-op program.

Optional co-op

Where a program is offered as “Optional Co-op”, students apply first to the regular program. Upon completion of first term, current students may apply to the co-op option.

Co-op fees

All co-op programs are charged a co-op fee. Fee information can be found on Mohawk College’s Tuition and Fees webpage.

The Mohawk College Co-operative Education department supports students in bridging their academic and workplace knowledge. Dedicated Co-op Specialists support students during each step of the process.

The co-operative education department

• Develops and maintains partnerships with business, industry, and government agencies.

• Facilitates the co-operative education preparation class.

• Assists students to develop marketable resumes, cover letters, and other job search documents.

• Provides guidance on interview techniques and job search strategies.

• Assesses suitability of work term employment opportunities.

• Facilitates the co-op recruitment process; including posting job opportunities, arranging interviews, and facilitating offers of co-op employment.

• Monitors co-op student work term progress.
