GR%!El~ CATH®LIG.LEAGUE SPOTLIGHT. ROGER BACON'S JERRETr DEAN

;.use i BY HAVE SCHLTM Enquirer contributor Before the 1997 season began, Greater Catholic League North coaches hadn't heard much about Jerrett Dean,Roger Bacon's speedy tailback. However, that won't be the case this year with most defenses now geared to slow down the Dean Express that ran rampant last year.

In the most Surprising performane by a football player last season, Dean rushed for a single-season school record 1,804 yards and scored 22 touchL downs, another Jerrett Dean school record. That one-season effort has given' Dean a chance to leave Roger Bacon with his name on all the career rushing and scoring records. "We've had so many good run-

ning backs over the years that Jerrett must have a good season to break the records," Roger Bacon coach Dan Starkey said. Walt ' Roeckers holds Roger Bacon's career TD (33) and rushing (3,100 yards) records. So Dean needs is a 1,300-yard, 11 TD season. Based on his work during the offseason, thatis within reach for the 6foot-1,195-pound senior. "Jerrett has gotten stronger during the summer," Starkey said."He now has 4.4 speed in the 40 and has the ability to turn it on whenever needed."

Dean was unstoppable as ajunior. Early in the season opposing defenses did not know what to expect from the Spartans' offense. After Dean rushed for 200-plus yards in three of the first four games, they began keying on him. Dean isn't the only reason the Spartans are picked to battle Purcell Marian for the GCL North champions. Dean is complimented by Brandon Barnes, a 5-11, 210-pound fullback who's a good blocker with 4.4 speed in the 40. "Brandon and Jerrett are best

friends," Starkey said."They campliment each other and both are j.. threats to score every time they ban; dle the ball." This one-two running attack should make it easier for senior quarterback Sam Merkle, who should be vastly improved after ° throwing for less than 700 yards in 1997. Roger Bacon is loaded on the offensive line with Dominic Pugliel< .li (6-3, 240) and Scott Hollmann (66 The Cincinnati Enquirer/ Emest Coleman 3, 240) while place kicker/punter Mason player tries to bring down Roger B.J.
