PENNSYLVANIA FOOTBALL NEWS NOW AVAILABLE by Norm Palovcsik, Publisher PA Wrestling Round-up With the inaugural issue of the Pennsylvania Football News, Pennsylvania has its first and only publication devoted exclusively to the coverage of high school, college and professional football in the Keystone State. As the publisher/editor of the Pennsylvania Wrestling Round-

up, I am pleased and honored to offer my support and advice to editors Tom Elling from Lock Haven and Rich Vetock from Ebensburg in their new venture. I am especially pleased to see these two devoted and highly-motivated individuals "tackle the task" of publishing a 17-issue, tabloid-sized -newspaper for the football public.in the state beginning this summer. The task before these two is monumental and thankless, but if it can be done'in a first-class way, Tom and Rich-will .get it done! -Tom Elling is a graduate of Moshannon Valley High School in 1962-and a Lock Haven State College in 1966. He eom ,peted in baseball and wrestling at Mo Valley and amassed a `30-3 varsity record and continued his wrestling career at LHSC 'where he won two varsity]ctters under Hall of Fame coach Gray Simons..

Ytich Vetock a 1961`graduate of,_Central-Cambria Bigl S6hbol:whe e'he Wag!a- star lineman on the Red ,Raider foot= ball team. He matriculated to Lock Haven State College and graduated in 1967. He developed and maintained an in terest in.athletics in high school and-has maintained that passion throughout, his life. Rich has also served as a devoted worker at the District 6, Northwest Regional and PIRA State Wrestling Championships as a timer and scorer.

These two individuals bring a lifelong dedication to amateur sports in Pennsylvania. I welcome the opportunity to work side by side with these two fine gentlemen in developing the communicative tool for football in the Keystone State. The newest sports publication will offer 17 jam-packed issues filled with football news, schedules, results, interviews, history features, columns,impact plays and players 'and much, much more. The first issue of.the News will be published July 12 in time for the summer All-Star events like the NorthSouth Shrine Classic on July 12 and the Big 33 Game in late July. The editors plan to be distributing free copies of issue # 1 at these contests in order to "showcase the product" and meet the public to receive their input in making it better. The remaining issues will be published and received on Fridays in September on the 4 th, 11th, 18th and 25th; October 2nd, 9th,.16th, 23rd and 30th; November 6tb, 13th, 20th and 27th; and December 4th and 11th; and January 16th (wrapup edition). The 17-issue subscription rate is a reasonable S30 which will entitle subscribers to 17 issues of the Publication regardless of ,when they might sign up. Subscribers will be able to keep track of the status of their subscription as each mailing label will include the expiration date listed next to the subscriber's name. The excitement is building for the upcoming 1998 football season and I'm pleased to- promote the latest venture for enhancing that season-the Pennsylvania Football News.

James Mungro of East Stroudsburg (1993-9¢) ranks 7th in all-time career rushing with 8,432 yards. #1 is Ken Hall of Sugar .Land, TX with 11,232 amassed from,1950-1953. Also on the list are some familiar, names! Emmitt Smith.(FL)-#4 with 8;804 and Billy Sims(TX) - #13 .withi7,738. Sims was the .1978 Heisman winner at Oklihoma. Mungro also is ranked nationally,in most TDs scored with 115 career and 47 in a season_ .

Philadelphia William . Penn Charter and Fort Washington Germantown Academy have the longest football rivalry in Pennsylvania, dating back to 1887. Lower Merion and Radnor in District 1 go back to 1897 and have met 101 times;in thatrspan._•,,,, The -Harrisburg Tech team of 1922 are ranked 4th nationally for most, points scored in an 11-12 game season(701)..

Of all the great quarterbacks Pennsylvania has pro;duced,onIy Berwick'sRon Powlus ranks nationally in any passing category. The Notre Dame grad had a career passing yardage of 7,342.

The 1992 Jersey Shore team ranks # 1 all-time for most average points per game with 75.1. The Harrisburg Tech team averagedd 66.3 that same year.-

Bob Thomas of Upper Merton set the national record for passes caught in one quarter(13) in 1975.

Harold "Red" Grange, native of.Pennsylvania, moved to Wheaton, IL, where he averaged 31.9 points cored. per game in the 1920 season.

Among coaches only Joe "Jazz" Diminick ranks nationally with 290 coaching wins at Coal Township, Susquenita, and-Mount Carmel. This places him #27 on the all-time win list.

Jeanette's Mark Brasco kicked 77 consecutive extra points in the 1982 -83 seasons. This ranks #4 in the all-time national high school record book.

Elling served as head wrestling coach at Loek.Haven High 'School from 1972-76 and his team s posted a 45-7 record with one PIAA state champion and 11 District 6 Champions. In 1973, his Bobcat team captured the prestigous Central Wrestling Conference title. He was named District 6 Coach of the Year three times and has worked tirelessly as toumament director for the PIAA District 6 and Northwest Regional tournaments and served as Financial Manager for the PIRA State Wrestling Championships. He has also been active in providing football color commentary for WBPZ radio in Lock Haven.

Carlton Haselrig (Johnstown High School ), the former Pittsburgh Steeler star who played in the Pro Bowl in 1982, is Playing semi-pro football for thePittsburgh Colts of the National Football Federation. . The former NCAA wrestling champion has, been out of football for the past four years. He last played for the New York Jets who released him in 1995 because-of, personal reasons. He sought out the Colts, according to head coach, Ed Brosky, the former 41cad coach at CanonMcMillan High School.. Haselrig -is expected to play guard and middle linebacker for the Colts,. who will play a ten game schedule in 1998. Players in the league, do not get paid, but they are insured. They practice twice a week. . .Former North Allegheny defensive coordinator, Tom.McConkey,has accepted the posction ..of, head coach at Keystone. Oaks High School. , Seneca Valley head coach, Rick Shepas, has resigned to take the head job at Ohio power Massillon High School. Kevin Topper,. 1998 graduate of ._ . Penn Trafford High -School, will play football at the ,College Of Wooster this fall.' Topper was a place kicker and a three year letter winner at Penn Trafford.He converted 49

season and was selected as a member of the North team in the Foothills Football Classic. Wooster is coming of its most successful season in 74 years,-finishing with a 9-1 record. Wyoming Valley West quarterback,' Marc Zlotek,led the West to a 28-24 victory over the East in the 48t' annual UNICO All-Star game in Kingston, Pa. Zlotek, who will take his talents to Division I Rhode Island, ran for 3 scores in the fourth quarter, with the winner coming with 23 seconds remaining in the game. He Ran for 101 yards on 12 carries. The game figured.to be an East blowout until Zlotek took control and led.the West to victory. . Danny Foor was named .head football. coach at .Northern. Bedford High School. ( Loysburg, Pa.) He takes ,;over.; for.,Joe .Nastasi who;resigned. after 29 years in the football program,the last 19 as their head mentoL; Foor is no stranger to the Panther- program since he.was a three-year ,starter at his alma mater, graduating in 1985. He is a graduate of Taylor University,Upland Indiana, where he also was a three-year starter. Foor previously served as an assistant coach at Southern
