North Shuts-Down South In Lezzer Lumber Game
The South Rises in-Ken Lantzy Game

June 20, 1998 Led by Chestnut Ridge graduates, Jon Claar and Greg Feather,the South team bombarded the North squad, 35-14, in the 28th Annual Ken Lantzy Finest 40 All Star Classic played at Windber Stadium. Feather caught four passes for 156 yards and three touchdowns and was named the South's offensive player of the game. Claar completed 5 of7 passes for 166 yards, with two of those going to Feather for scores. The North, coached by Altoona's Ed Dalton, led 14-0 after one quarter, but the South exploded for 35 unanswered points, with 21 coming in the second frame. The South squad,coached by Bedford's Max Shoemaker,shut down the North offense the rest of the way. The North scored on runs of5 yards by Bellwood's Don Lingenfelter, and a.2 yard run by quarterback Matt Miller, also ofBellwood, to lead 14-0 after one ,period of play. The South came right back, in the second stanza scoring three TD"s to take the lead that they never relinquished. Three touchdown passes, two from Claar to Feather and a third from Bedford's Justin Secrest to Westmont's Aaron Peterman accounted for the scoring in that frame. They added two more scores,in4he third frame to set the final at 35-14. .This all-star game originated in 1971 and was named after Ken Lantzy, a former football player at Cambria Heights High School. Lantzy was injured in a 1970 game while making a tackle and was paralyzed. Area football coaches started the Ken Lantzy game in 1971 to help defray cost to his parents for medical bills and rehabilitation expenses. Lantzy went on to graduate from St. Francis College and is a successful insurance man in his home town of Carrolltown,Pa. Proceeds from the game now go to the Spinal Cord Society and provides scholarships to local athletes.Attendance at this year's game was approximately 6,000.'
NAFCA All-Star , Game Led by Seneca Valley. running back, Dan Tropf, the North defeated the South in the NAFCA AllStar game atMars,High , School onFriday,June 13w Tropf, scored on runs of one and two yards in the second quarter to lead the way for the North win. South quarterback, Corey Oakes (Perry) was named MVP for his squad and quarterback, Joe Singorella (Highlands), was named MVP for the North.

Foothill's Football Classic The third annual Foothill's Football Classic was played at Norwin Stadium on Friday, June 131. Behind quarterback, Waylon Davis( Norwin ),and Connellsville running back, Phil Braxton, the South scored a 14-3 victory over the North.. ' Braxton, who will take his talent to West Virginia University carried 17 times for 110 yards, and one touchdown, and was named the games MVP. Davis was 7 for 18 for 66 yards and 1 touchdown. Brandon Payne, running back from Woodland, Hills, was the North MVP.
South Park's _Tom Loughran Named Small School Top Coach Tom'U'Loughran; head coach`at'South Park High'School, was named the 1997 AP Small School Coach-ofthe-Year._ He not only coached his team to a PIAA Class AA Championship, but in the process his teams knocked three undefeated from those hallowed ranks, inciudinga convincing 33-7 thrashing of an outstanding Wilmington team in the PIAA semis. PFN congratulates Coach Loughran for this well-deserved honor.-
Defense played a large part in the 14th.Annual .Lezzer Lumber All Star Game, played at Altoona's Mansion Park. The game, formerly known as the Unimart All Star Classic,saw Coach Lyle Domico's squad shut down the South ground game on their way to a-solid 21-7 win. The tough defense held the South ground game to 57 yards rushing and 221 total yards in the game. A second period injury to Drew Onkst( Bishop Guifoyle). Blair Couno, Player of the Year, didn't help the South's cause. The first half was scoreless until the North got things going with a 33 yard scoring strike from Clearfield's Dennis Yohe to Drew Smalley. That set the half-time score at 7-0. Penns Valley's Jason Greeger raced in from 22 yards out in the 3rd frame to up the lead to 14-0. The South came back to cut the lead to 14-7 on a one yard scoring run'by Jeff Grissinger(Southern Huntingdon ), but on the ensuing drive, the North answered the South score with a 20 yard scamper by State College's Larry Johnson. Johnson was named the North's offensive MVP and Matt Maggs was name the defensive MVP for Domico's squad. . Altoona's Josh Geis was cited as the South offensive MVP and Central's Matt Harmon was named defensive MVPfor coach Jim'Zauzig's South squad. Some of the players in the game who will continue their playing careers at the intercollegiate level include Johnson and David Royer (Penns Valley ), Penn State, Jim Kyle( Mount Union ), Dickinson, Jon Garter and Chris Rosen - Jones (State College), Princeton. The series is now tied at 7-7.
