Artrell Hawkins, a former Bishop McCort( Johnstown, Pa.)and University of Cincinnati football standout, has already agreed to terms on a contract with the Cincinnati Bengals of the National Football League. The twenty-one year old Hawkins was a second round choice in the April 18th NFL draft, and became the first of the Bengal draft choices to sign a contract. The contract was reportedly a 3-year deal, worth $500,000.00, per year, with a $700,000.00 signing bonus. 'The Bishop McCort graduate is the highest drafted Cincinnati Resrcat since linebacker Alex Gordon, who was taken in the second round by the New York Jets -in 1987. Hawkins was a four year contributor and a two year starter for the Bearcats. lie had 46 tackles, 13 pass deflections,. and .2 Intercepdons his senior year at Cincinnati. The early signing bonus allows Hawkins to im- . m:diately concentrate on football in hope of attaining a starting spot in the Bengal lineup. The Bengals used 3 different starters at right cornerback last year whilecompiling a 7-9 record, the eventh straight year that they failed to make the playoffs. It appears that Thomas Randolf, a free agent acquisition;has the early edge for the starting spot on the right side, but Hawkins, along with Jimmy Spencer and Corey Sawy~r should provide solid competition. Hawkins joins Pete Durank~' Denver Broncos) and Jack Ham(Pittsburgh Steelers)as former Bishop McCort-alumni who have played in the NFL. -He will report to the Bengal's training camp on July 23rd.

Larry Hanley, the Executive Director of the WPIAL, announced last spring that the the 1998 football season in tlnv WPIALs consolodated into three nineteam conferences. In essence this gives each ofthe Class 'AAA teams eight(8)conference games, also meaning that most of these teams would open with a conference opponent- quite a change from the past. Mt. Pleasant coach Paul Tepper likes the change noting that sometimes teams let-up against non-conference foes. And Woodland Hills' coach George Novak likes the addition of a fourth..place teatu in the plauoffs, noting that Stealer last year was a 7-3 fourth-placer. Mr. Hanley agreed with Novak's evaluation, emphasizing that the changes would not prolong the season and would give the fourth placer a chance. Not all is roses, however. In Class AAAA, Central Catholic and Fox Chapel move from the Quad East Conference to the Quad North, while Woodland Hills moves from the North to the East. This move disappointed Fox Chapel because they are the smallest of the Class AAAA schools and now must face the largest.
