BASSANO DEL GRAPPA an artist’s-eye view

modul-dance Modul-dance is a multi-annual cooperation project with the participation of 20 European dancehouses from 16 countries. One of the project’s key elements is the promotion of mobility, so that artists receiving its support follow itineraries across Europe to develop their creative work and present it to different audiences. Each of the guides in this collection shows a city from the viewpoint of a local artist, who proposes his or her own particular route to artists in transit, seeking to put them in connection with their host city. While these city routes share some basic features, each one is different and in their differences lies a wealth of gazes, aesthetics, approximations to the local and much more. In a word, they form a mirror of the diversity that modul-dance has always fostered. The Bassano del Grappa city guide has been possible thanks to the curatorial work of Centro per la Scena Contemporanea, a partner in the modul-dance project.

A small but essential taste of Bassano identity The bridge, of course: Ponte Vecchio. It is so nice to just listen to the sound of the river, to watch the landscape and feel the contrast with the town, with youngsters crossing the bridge. If you get here from the town centre, first you should stop at Nardini’s Bar, just at the start of the bridge: ask for a Mezzo, a typical drink from Nardini, and enjoy it on the bridge Ponte degli Alpini/Ponte Vecchio 2

03 Detail Visit the Church of San Giovanni on Piazza Libertà. Actually, what I have always found very interesting is that the church width is greater than its length. I sense a special ambience inside, and quite often it is empty. My advice would be to go there with a notebook, sit inside and simply write down your thoughts Piazza Libertà

04

02 Something for free/A panoramic view Start at Via Giovanni Volpato. From the bridge you should definitely follow Via Giovanni Volpato and find a trail allowing you to take a small street that goes along the river. You can go there with a friend, or alone, and stroll calmly in the midst of nature along the river. Try it for a few minutes, or even for hours. Beautiful!

One place I personally recommend Caffè dei Libri. This is a very nice place to drink a coffee or have lunch. It’s a bookshop with a bar/ restaurant inside. It is very quiet, but only go there if you have enough time. It may take more than an hour to be served a proper meal. A place where you can find me On the way to Istituto Scalabrini at the statue of Saint Joseph. In 2010, as I was walking from the centre to the Istituto Scalabrini I saw the statue of this saint. The following words were depicted: “ITE AD JOSEPH. I quickly realised it would be the title of my next piece. So now Joseph is actually the name of my first solo, and we are still touring with it! This is why I feel there is still a small piece of me at this spot Viale Scalabrini on the corner with Via Giovanni Volpato
