Accounting profession critical in transforming Lesotho’s economy: DPM By Pulane Lichaba MASERU- Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) Mothetjoa Metsing says Accounting profession is very critical in transforming Lesotho‘s economy. DPM said this in his statement during the annual conference of the Lesotho Institute of Accountants (LIA) under the theme ‘Accountancy Profession Defining the Leadership Paradigm for New Africa’. Metsing maintained that amongst all other professions, vocations, arts and crafts in the Lesotho market, the accounting profession has always, constantly provided Lesotho with the human resource that has been the reliable critical mass in formulating new solutions, shaping policies as well as implementing them. “Your decision seeks to answer the leadership question and fill the leadership void through your professional expertise is therefore commendable, because you are such an important profession, if Lesotho or any African country is to triumph over its challenges,” he stated. He continued that the wonderful exchange of experience and practices will surely concretize the hope and knowledge that we are indeed
on the right track to achieve ‘The Accountancy Profession Defining the Leadership Paradigm for New Africa’ and I am hopeful that other fraternities will follow in your footsteps in order for the whole spectrum to operate optimally.’ Meanwhile, Vickson Ncube, Chief Executive Officer of Pan African Federation of Accountancy (PAFA) stated that the best leaders are persons who have social influence, which maximizes the efforts of others towards the achievement of a goal. “Being a leader is not a seniority position in the hierarchy, title or personal attributes,” he noted. Ncube also added that the best leaders separate politics from economics. “Money knows no political parties. Strong economies are those where national resources are utilized for the benefit of all citizens, creating an environment where citizens have an opportunity to make a living.” For his part, the former President of South Africa Thabo Mbeki who was the keynote speaker at the event quoted a speech he made 17 years ago on the African Renaissance in which he stated that it is out of a pungent mixture of greed, dehumanizing poverty, obscene wealth and endemic and private corrupt practice, that many of Africa’s coups d’etat, civil wars and situations of instability are born and entrenched. “The time has come that we call a halt to the seemingly socially approved deification of the personal acquisition of material wealth and the abuse of state power to impoverish the people and deny our continent the possibility to achieve sustainable development,” he said.
Mbeki highlighted that in the October 2014 edition of the journal of the LIA, the CEO of the Institute, ’Malehlohonolo Mahase pointed out that Lesotho was faced with a situation of widespread corruption and fraud within the public and private sector. “The observations made by Ms. Mahase apply not just to Lesotho but also and at least to the greater part of our continent. Accordingly, part of the elaboration of the paradigm of leadership for the new Africa must include close attention to the task to combat this corruption and fraud on a sustained basis and we must take into account the global socio-economic setting within which such corruption and fraud take place,” he said. Mbeki also touched on money laundering issues, which he declared that according to the British National Crime Agency, money launder-
ing is heavily reliant on access to the professional skills of lawyers, accountants and company formation agents, among others. “Our accountancy profession should be conscious of the role it must play as a reliable guardian of good state and good corporate governance in the interests of the renaissance of Africa,” he asserted. Mbeki concluded that the political leadership, together with its social partners, and the state institutions should be empowered with the capacity to ensure that they elaborate and implement policies and programmes which actually result in sustained economic growth, development and transformation, as well as to eradicate poverty and underdevelopment for the benefit of the people as a whole.

HIV epidemic hinders sustainable socioeconomic development - official

MASERU - HIV epidemic remains the biggest obstacle to sustainable socio-economic development in the world, including Lesotho, says the United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator, Karla Hershey at the 70th celebration of the UN’s existence. The celebration was held in Maseru on Friday with the theme: ‘The road to dignity by 2030, working together for the future, we want to mark this anniversary.’ Hershey indicated that this year is a historical one that brought UN members states and citizens of the world together to decide and embark on new paths to improve lives of people everywhere. “These decisions will determine the global course of action to end poverty, promote prosperity and the well-being of all, protect the environment and address climate change,” asserted the UN Resident
Coordinator. She further stated that the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the unfinished MDGs Agenda which are taken up as part of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are the macro-level issues around which they should focus their efforts in developing the post 2015 development agenda for Lesotho. She noted: “MDGs focused global attention on a limited number of high impact initiatives aimed at addressing poverty and other development priorities.” Hershey said Lesotho recorded considerable progress in MDGs relating to access to universal education, gender equality and women’s empowerment, however “there is a need to increase efforts in transforming lives and reducing vulnerabilities among Basotho, especially women and children to tackle persisting inequalities and poverty.” The UN Resident Coordinator
indicated that Lesotho is one of the countries that still has unfinished business and ought to continue to strive towards goals relating to the eradication of extreme poverty and hunger and the health-related MDGs including reducing child mortality, improving maternal health and combating HIV and AIDs and Tuberculosis (TB). She also stated that HIV had prevented significant progress in the attainment of MDGs particularly in the areas of infant mortality, maternal mortality, gender equality and the burden of orphans and vulnerable children. Hershey pointed out that the HIV/AIDS epidemic was one of the key challenges, in delivering full immunization coverage of babies and children, basic health care, maternal mortality, the inability to adapt quickly enough to climate change

Meanwhile, UNAIDS Country Director Dr. Alti Zwandor said they were aware that the challenge of HIV/AIDs was very serious in the country. However, she asserted that they were beginning to see the political commitment regarding the HIV pandemic in Lesotho, though she said they needed to see the movement from concern to action. She further indicated that it was essential to encourage every individual to know their status. “Currently less than half today know their status in the country, which still remains a challenge,”
she said. For her part, Limpho Nkholi who was representing the youth talked about the role of youth in implementing the SDGs that follow the MDGs which were adopted in 2000. “In 2000, during the adoption of MDGs, none of us felt part of that but we are pleased that today we are here talking about the SDGs as youth in this country and feeling part of them,” she said further acknowledging the government and its partners for having made Lesotho youth part of the SDGs. Nkholi continued: “We dream of a time when we are able to face our challenges, when poverty and HIV/ AIDs are history in this country.” Her last message was: “Give young people a place to stand and they will move the world.”

By ’Majirata Latela MASERU - Lesotho hosted the Sixteenth Steering Committee Conference on the Southern African Development Community and African Development Bank (SADC/ ADB) support for the control of communicable diseases on Friday last week. In an interview with Informative Newspaper, Dr. Moselinyane Letsie from the Ministry of Health indicated that the purpose of the meeting between the SADC health sectors was to review and recommend the adoption of policy documents to be presented to the Ministers for approval in the next SADC conference for Ministers of Health. “We also discussed annual reports and the implementation of strategic plans for Tuberculosis and Malaria and the post 2015 strategic
plans for TB and Malaria,” said Dr. Letsie. Dr. Letsie added that the objective of the meeting was to review and recommend the adoption of instruments for increasing access to medicine which will help in standardizing documents for getting medicines across the SADC region. “We also updated each other on project management as well as visiting Botšabelo Hospital in South Africa as Lesotho was the host,” she explained. In addition, Dr. Letsie asserted that the TB annual report for 2014 had been completed and had been reviewed and validated by the TB managers from member states and that the report showed that the region had made sustainable progress in TB control and they believe that greater progress could have been
made as some of the member countries have reached the set targets

She pointed out that the annual report for Malaria 2014 indicates that Malaria was reported to have increased in four out of six countries including the control group; comparing 2014 with the period 2011- 2014 and there had been an upward turn in both Malaria incidences and Malaria related deaths across all the low Malaria transmitted countries that reported on these indicators. She also highlighted that on the issue of improving sustainable availability of medicines, the Projects Steering Committee (PSC) agreed that the secretariat had undertaken an assessment to determine training and research needs of pharmaceutical regulators and managers in the SADC region. “This would help to facilitate the establishment of Centers of Excellence (CoE) and Centers of Specialization (CoS) in pharmaceuticals,” explained Dr. Letsie. Meanwhile, Setshwano Mokgweetsinyana from the Ministry of Health Botswana, and also a Chairperson of the meeting showed his gratitude over the meeting as he showed that they had made decisions for the benefit of SADC countries. Mokgweetsinyana pointed out that he was happy about the agreement that medical documents be standardized across the SADC region, which will help people to access the same medicines from all over the SADC countries without any problems. He also congratulated Botšabelo Hospital as he stated that he had realized on their visit to the hospital that people are given first class diagnosis and care and that the people from other SADC countries get the same care.

Detained Soldiers fail to appear before SADC Commission By ’Mantšali Phakoana MASERU- Chairperson of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Commission of Inquiry, Justice Mphaphi Phumaphi says 10 soldiers currently held at the Maseru Central Prison, suspected of mutiny failed to appear before the Commission. The Commission had summoned the 10 soldiers to appear before it on Wednesday last week, but this did not happen. Justice Phumaphi said this at the last sitting of the SADC Commission which was mandated mainly to investigate the circumstances surrounding Lieutenant General Maaparankoe Mahao’s death. The Commission was gazetted by the Prime Minister of Lesotho, Dr. Pakalitha Mosisili through the Legal Notice No: 88 of 2015, in accordance with Section 3 (1) of the Public Inquiries Act, 1994, I. He said the Commission will now be dealing with other issues that include the compilation of a report. “Today is our last sitting, we had scheduled a number of about 10 detained soldiers, however it has not been possible to have them here,” Phumaphi said. The Summons to the detainees was dated 16th October 2015. The Chairperson of the Commission acknowledged everyone who
had participated in assisting the Commission to complete its mandate. Meanwhile, Advocate Haae Phoofolo, (KC), representing Mahao’ s family before the Commission submitted to the Commission that they take a serious note that since the detained soldiers were denied the opportunity to testify before the commission, then the term of reference (1 a), has not been complied with. About 23 Soldiers were detained after being suspected of a mutiny plot. Term of reference (1 a), partly says the Commission is appointed to review the investigations into t h e a l -
leged mutiny plot. “Our clients have been denied the opportunity to testify before this Commission by people who are more powerful than they are,” said Adv. Phoofolo. Advocate Tumisang Mosotho indicated that the summons was directed to certain individuals (detainees) and they had not refused to appear before the Commission but the Lesotho Defence Force (LDF) had decided that they (the detainees) would not appear. Thanking the Commission for its operation in the country, the Prime Minister Dr. Pakalitha Mosisili who appeared before the Commission for the second time said he was grateful that his plea to assist the country of Lesotho in investigating the death of Lieu-

tenant General Mahao and matters surrounding his death was heard and considered worthy. “I am aware that you have completed your duty and we are pleased that we did our level best to assist you to facilitate your work,” he said to the Commission. He further indicated that it was of great importance that the Commission not be seen to be influenced by the government, as instructed by the SADC Heads of States. The Prime Minister concluded by stating that the Commission did its duty in a good faith, and in a way that protected the witnesses who testified before the Commission. Some of the identified people who testified before the Commission in public are: Commander of the Lesotho Defence Force (LDF), Lieutenant General Kennedy Tlali Kamoli, the Premier Dr. Pakalitha Mosisili, Deputy Prime Minister Mothetjoa Metsing, Minister of Defence Tšeliso Mokhosi, Colonel Bulane Sechele, Lieutenant Colonel Tefo Hashatsi, former Commissioner of Police Khothatso Tšooana, former Prime Minister of Lesotho, Dr. Thomas Motsoahae Thabane, Chief Thesele ‘Maseribane, leader of Reformed Congress of Lesotho (RCL) Keketso Rantšo, as well as some of the soldiers who fled to South Africa. The Commission started operating in Lesotho on the 30th August 2015 and had been given 90 days to operate in the country.
Lesotho invites South African expert to advise on electricity vandalism By Tefo Khunonyane MASERU- The Lesotho Electricity Company (LEC) has invited a South African technical advisor from the Southern African Revenue Protection Association, Rens Bindeman to help Lesotho solve challenges of electricity vandalism which includes copper theft which is said to be on the rise in the country. The General Manager Finance of LEC, ’Masechaba Mantsoe pointed out that the copper theft and vandalism is high in the country and that the company had lost a lot of money. Mantsoe indicated that between August 2014 and March 2015, 87 theft incidents had been reported and had cost the company M185, 305.00 From March 2015 to August 2015, she said 98 theft incidents had been reported while the company had lost M194, 141.00. Mental colonisation keeps you in ferocious chains and is much more brutal because it is written on your soul. It takes charge of your mind and begins to treat it like that of a horse. I hope you realise that the horse cooperates with you because of the pain caused by the harnesses. Mental colonisation forces you to cooperate with certain taboos because failure to do so has serious

In fact it belittles our ability systematically to the point that we end up being spectators in issues which have a bearing over our futures. The moment we begin to ask intelligent
questions we are classified as rebellious because in their system we are not supposed to think or amount to anything. All we are supposed to do is sing praises to certain systems and honour certain pigmentation. We are so poisoned to the extent that we cannot see the genius in our brother and yet we are the first to heap praises on those from other shores. A system has been diabolically crafted so that it makes us victims in our own domains. I believe we need to let go the chains of mental colonisation and start appreciating who we are and the vast value wrapped around our pigmentation. It is time we begin to pour accolades to our own and celebrate the beauty and treasure housed in the inside of us. We have what it takes
to build our nations without being told by others what is good for us, as a matter of fact we already know. Let us arise and make a deliberate choice to lead so well such that our detractors will not have anything but pure respect for us. We owe it to the next generation to lead well, let us not fail it and ourselves. The reason why we were born now is because we have gifts needed by this generation. We are not mistakes and dummies, but we are very capable individuals able to take our people to the next level. May the leader in you arise. Success is an attitude; let us meet at the top. How to become a “successful” entrepreneur? Recently, I was asked to speak to a group of undergraduates on how to become a successful entrepreneur. I agreed for the fact that money and wealth can’t be separated from entrepreneurship. Full time employees make less than ten percent (10%) of the rich population, whereas entrepreneurs make more than 70% of the rich population. Undoubtedly, money is in business. We need to be successful entrepreneurs. By the way, what is an entrepreneur? Simply put, an entrepreneur is a problem solver or a life simplifier. How does one become an entrepreneur? It’s easy, just spot a challenge and come up with a solution. Then find a way to be paid for your solution. You will be an entrepreneur that way. However, that was not the question. The question is how does one become

a “successful” entrepreneur? My answer is still simple. By being like “successful” entrepreneurs. I guess the real question would be what are the qualities of “successful” entrepreneurs? They are many. For this week, we shall go through three qualities of “successful” entrepreneurs. 1. They know that if it has to
be, it’s up to them. Successful entrepreneurs take their success responsibility. They don’t put anyone in charge of their financial success. They know that no one cares as much about their financial future than themselves. To them, it is neither the government nor their employers, but themselves. If it has to be it’s up to them. 2. They also know that there is nothing of significant that has been reached one person. As a result, they are not ashamed to stand-up and ask for help. To them, asking for help is not a sign of weakness, but rather the sign of the highest level of maturity: Interdependency. They ask for help easily. 3. They know themselves. During the research for the financial success book: THE MOTIVE, we interviewed a few successful
business men and women in Lesotho and South Africa. I was rather astonished that most of them said self-mastery is the key to success. The advantages of knowing self is to pick a business that one can easily function in and have passion for so that they can endure all the challenges they will meet in their endeavors. I read somewhere that life is the most difficult examination, because some people spend most of their time trying to copy others, not realizing that each one of us has a different question paper. Successful entrepreneurs know themselves, especially their strengths. I am really tempted to dish them all out here, but I am sure that you can use some time to think and put to test these three. MEM establishes climate change awareness campaign By Thandie Mthimkhulu QUTHING - As part of climate change awareness campaign, the Ministry of Energy and Meteorology held competitions for Primary and High school students in the Quthing district to guarantee that the message on climate change is passed onto them, so that they can inform their communities. Speaking at the event, Mosuoe Lethaha, a meteorologist, indicated that education about climate change ought to start with the students, as they are likely to be the victims in future when the situation has worsened, and that if they grow up with the knowledge of how to prevent climate change and protect the ozone layer, they will be able to live with the available resources and ensure their proper use.
“First of all, the populace needs to recognize and admit that there is climate change so that they can take action about it,” he added. He continued to assert that the schools have been given a toolkit as a teaching aid to enable them to teach about the prevention of climate change and protection of the ozone layer, and that they want to find out whether the students are well informed about climate change by listening to their poetry, songs and debates. The Deputy Minister of Education and Training Thabang Kholumo, said they were working together to spread the message about climate change, especially in schools, so that students can also do the same in their communities. He further appealed to Basotho that it is their responsibility to help
prevent climate change because if the ozone layer gets destroyed, Lesotho will definitely be a victim too. The Minister of Energy and Meteorology, Silibe Mochoboroane, indicated that they were working together with the teachers on ensuring awareness about climate change and that they had even trained teachers how they can teach the students about this issue and have equipped them with sufficient knowledge that they will also be able to pass on to their communities. He further continued that people should take care of themselves by putting on clothes and hats during hot and sunny days because sun’s rays can have a negative impact on humans, such as eye cataracts and skin cancer they can also
have a negative impact on animals and plants as well. He indicated that he had spoken to the Indian Ambassador in Lesotho to donate a sponsorship to the students who will get the first position in these competitions to study in India, as part of appreciating their hard work on climate change awareness campaign. The two Ministries, being the Ministry of Energy and Meteorology together with the Ministry of Education and Training will go around the country, starting from the three districts which are Quthing, Mafeteng and Mohale’s Hoek, promoting the awareness campaign on climate change with school competitions as a way of preventing climate change and protecting the ozone layer for future generations.

By Thandie Mthimkhulu MASERU - Deputy Prime Minister Mothetjoa Metsing together with Minister of Health Dr. ’Molotsi Monyamane and his deputy Liteboho Kompi recently had a tour at Health Centers that work with Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (EGPAF). The Health Centers are Queen Elizabeth II, Baylor and Sankatana Centre of Excellence which are all located in Maseru.
Queen Elizabeth II Hospital Director Dr. Lucy Mapota indicated that the hospital was reopened on the 31st October 2014 with the help of EGPAF and that they offer HIV/ AIDS related services. She said the aim of EGPAF is to fight HIV/AIDS in Lesotho and that they provide other health services except maternity services which they would offer as time goes by. She asserted that they do not have services for patients that ought to be hospitalized as they still refer them to Teya-Teyaneng hospital or
Motebang in Hlotse. Dr. Mapota pointed out that EGPAF supports them in the battle of preventing mother to child HIV/ AIDS transmission and in conducting male circumcision which decreases the chances of being infected with HIV/ AIDS by 60%. She further indicated that there is shortage of workers at the hospital and that they would be pleased if the hospital could be offered more health professionals so that they would be able to deliver fast and quality services to their patients. Meanwhile, EGPAF Country Director Dr. AppolinaireTiam said they are working in African countries to reduce HIV prevalence, mortality rate and morbidity by increasing population coverage of effective, integrated and quality comprehensive HIV prevention, care and treatment services using a district model approach. He fur-
ther indicated that they offer treatment for TB patients adding that they go extra by teaching youths around the country about Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) as well as HIV/AIDS. During the tour, Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Health ’Mamoruti Tiheli said there is generally shortage of nurses and doctors at health centers including hospitals and that she has since been promised that the government would hire more in the next financial year 2016/17 so that they could provide fast and quality services to the patients. EGPAF is working in fifteen countries and at more than 5,400 sites around the world to prevent the transmission of HIV to children and to help those already infected with the virus. Its global objectives are to implement prevention, care, and treatment and give those affected by HIV/AIDS the voice.

LNA warns Basotho about behavioral change By Tefo Khunonyane MASERU - Lesotho Nursing Association (LNA) encourages Basotho nation to have a behavioral change and to refrain from indulging in adultery in order to avoid being infected with HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections. ’Mapiers Mohapi who is a lecturer in the Faculty of Health Sciences in the Department of Nursing at the National University of Lesotho (NUL) indicated that Lesotho is one of the countries, where many men and women have indulged in adultery and have multiple sexual partners. She further pointed out that multiple sexual partners are a source of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. Mohapi mentioned that unprotected sex is also a source of HIV. She pointed out that sex is good
for married couples because it reduces stress and brings peace and happiness in the family. She also indicated that sex is a blessing because it is a source of children in the family, and that it was created by Almighty God Himself. Meanwhile a member of Autism-Lesotho, and also a parent of one of the autistic children, Pulane Moiloa indicated that autistic children differ from one another and that they do not behave in a normal way as other children do. Moiloa further pointed out that such children are very particular about the food they eat and that they do not eat many kinds of food. She also mentioned that some of them still want to be spoon-fed like a baby, even at the age of eight years, and if not so, they choose to play with food instead of eating. She stated that autistic children are very naughty and are always giv-

Standard Lesotho Bank celebrates its first Hippo account anniversary By Pulane Lichaba MASERU- Standard Lesotho Bank celebrated its Hippo account’s one year anniversary on Saturday with children. Marketing Manager at Standard Lesotho Bank, Manyathela Kheleli explained that the Hippo account is an affordable saving and investment account that teaches children the rewards of saving and that it does not charge any interest. “This account is specifically tailored for parents who want to invest for their children ranging from three months to 16 years, from as little as M50.00 per month, “he noted. He continued that “This product is in line with the government policies of teaching children about the value of money. Hippo is celebrating one year today, so we decided to celebrate together with the children and we are also grateful to the parents for appreciating the fact that they want their kids to respect money and learn to save.” Kheleli stated that they now have over 15000 children owning Hippo accounts in Lesotho. Lesotho launches housing profile

MASERU - UN-Habitat, in a joint venture with the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftainship Affairs through its department of housing has launched a housing profile aimed at delivering an indepth and multidimensional analysis of Lesotho’s housing sector. Speaking at the launch Fernanda Lonardoni, Housing Policy Adviser UN-Habitat, explained that a housing profile is a situational analysis on housing. “It actually investigates the achievements, gaps and way forward in the housing sector.” She added that the housing sector performance constraints in Lesotho were compiled into four sectors being Land, Housing Finance, Infrastructure and Building
materials and construction sector. “There is poor implementation of planning policies and also lack of co-ordination and communication between ministries and departments within them and stakeholders.” “In terms of Housing Finance we found out that it is difficult for people to access funding and credit markets, as people tend to have other debts which limit them from having other mortgages even if they qualify and also the formal private sector concentrates on housing at the very top of the market, leaving the majority unserved by formal housing supply,” explained Lonardoni. She continued: “In regard to Infrastructure we found out that
there is lack of local production of energy, which leads to importation and high prices, connection costs are too high, owing to having to import almost every component needed.” Lonardoni also added that construction in Lesotho is heavily influenced by South Africa and that incremental development is often layer by layer rather than room by room. Meanwhile, Lonardoni highlighted that there is a dire need of institutional land reforms, especially establishment of a Ministry of Land and Housing and also there should be a revised land tenure system to facilitate and accelerate land acquisition for housing. “Infrastructure supply should
focus on closing the supply deficit and supplying infrastructure to the new housing as it is built at costs affordable to the occupants,” she explained. She went on to indicate that establishing a construction council to regulate the industry and registration institutions for construction related professions would also help. Director of Housing, Kabelo Lethunya revealed that the current status of housing Lesotho is mainly caused by severe competition between agriculture and housing for land, as people continue to build houses on arable land. “We need to recognize formal settlements as a housing solution and create an enabling environment for private housing development.”

Lesotho’s efforts in combating climate change By Pulane Lichaba Quthing- Lesotho over along period has already been experiencing the impact of climate change in the form of severe drought, strong winds, heavy snowfall in winter and severe storms which leave many families vulnerable. According to ’Mamokhomo Mabote, Finance and Administration Officer in the Ministry of Energy and Meteorology, the Government of Lesotho together with the Global and Environment Facility (GEF) initiated a number of adaptation options and strategies under their project called Improvement of Early Warning Systems to reduce the impact of climate change and capacity building to integrate climate change on development plans. “Under this project we gave the community of Ha Rakhomo and Ha Damanyane forestry trees, orchards and koekoek chickens, for them to try and make a living out of them, as we realized that grazing land is becoming limited and unlike livestock these chickens eat everything which makes them low maintainance ,” she said. Mabote continued that “These koekoek chickens are resistant to drought and extreme weather conditions. They are the free ranging chickens with laying capabilities as well as a large bone-structure for meat production and they also maintain good egg production even with poor quality or insufficient feeding. koekoek chickens said the chickens have really changed her life positively as she is now able to assist her family financially. “I make
money out of them by selling their eggs. They are also easy to maintain as they eat everything from maize to pap,” she noted.
Mokhahlane added that she also owns a home garden (lentloane) where she plants vegetables. “I like home gardening because it is able to hold moisture for a longer period of time which makes it possible for us to have vegetables even in this severe drought we are in,” she said. Keketso Khobao said after being warned of the dangers of climate change and how it affects them, they teamed up as five farmers and decided to go into conservation agriculture. She said that they were told that it reduces soil erosion and that it increases the amount of water that penetrates into the soil. “We have been doing it for three years now and we receive very positive results during our harvest time. The Ministry of Agriculture also helped us with seeds and manure and now the only thing that affects us is drought and thieves,” she said. Mabote also stated that the Ministry of Agriculture also provided the two communities with training on promotion preservation and management of land. “The ministry realized that alien shrubs destroy the grazing land and encouraged communities to remove them and plant tšaane grass as it holds moisture for a long period.” She also added that as one of the adaptation processes the government also stationed an automatic weather station in Quthing, which helps in terms of taking accurate readings. Other adaptation measures the government has undertaken include the introduction of climate change into education curricula in schools, as the Ministries of Education and Training and Energy launched an educational tool-kit on climate change.
Lesotho Young Professionals Forum launched By Pulane Lichaba MASERU - Courtesy of the United States Embassy Lesotho, a forum for young professionals in Lesotho aimed at assisting youths with entrepreneurial skills has commenced recently. Public Diplomacy Specialist at the US Embassy ‘Mathabang Fanyane said she believes the forum would take young professionals very far in life. “Our engagement with young professionals is mainly on education. We offer them scholarships and very soon we are going to turn the American room at the State Library into Young African leader’s hub, where the youth could share ideas and skills depending on their profession,” she noted. Meanwhile, Karabo Maitin, Entrepreneur and Co-founder of Basutoland Ink stated that Basotho are not really accustomed to being entrepreneurs. “From a very young age we are encouraged to join the mainstream and find jobs in government. We have to do the right thing with our
education system and introduce a curriculum that encompasses entrepreneurship, “said Maitin. He also added that entrepreneurs should develop what is called business unusual, which would assist with challenges that might arise in the business. Dr. Molisana Molisana, Director Planning and Development at the National University of Lesotho (NUL) told the young professionals at the forum to utilize and use the knowledge they possess effectively. “If you want to be an entrepreneur you have to be involved in the process, understand and familiarize yourself with the content. Also you should network locally and globally,” he said. He added that NUL has a strategic plan to incorporate entrepreneurship in their curriculum. “We have already signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Vodacom as they have a business hub. We have also partnered with Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP) and we will be identifying opportunities and internships for our students there,” he stated.

Netherlands Hall set ablaze with ideas By Joalane Folepe ROMA-National University of Lesotho’s (NUL)’s Netherlands Hall was set ablaze in the early morning of Friday 23rd, as the NUL B.Comm. Association hosted its long anticipated entrepreneurship day. This event, which has had its struggles in the past in terms of implementation, was redefined from its former dreary sense of already established and mostly public sector organizations being invited to review students’ business plans with the aim of financing the ones that portray potential for profitability and growth, to a whole new level, of inviting organizations in the private sector with humble beginnings, with the hope of instilling the entrepreneurial spirit in our new breed of graduates to be. NUL BCom. Association is a student association established with the purpose of creating a platform for department of business administration (DBA) students to practice what they have learned in their lecture halls. This is done through interaction with relevant stakeholders in the market such as potential employers, investors and partners. This was excellently achieved through one of its team-project team, which worked day and night to ensure that entrepreneurship day comes into existence. The idea behind the whole day was to create a bridge between organizations and all students interested in becoming entrepreneurs, with the major objective of letting them know about the existing conditions in the corporate world.
The event commenced on a high note with welcoming remarks from a lecturer from DBA –who welcomed the guests and briefly outlined the significance of the day in the DBA calendar. The event was graced by the presence of some fast-growing organizations in the private sector, such as Dynamic Transformations, the BAM Group, Campus Kulcha, 10 Talents Construction Company as well as BEDCO. The beautiful Nozipho Nonyana of Dynamic Transformations kickstarted the companies’ presentations on a very inspiring note. She specifically outlined the importance of having a purpose, which is a function of love for the business idea, something that one is good at and which pays well. There should also be a need for such an idea to solve a particular problem in the market. She further accentuated the point of selecting a business that is compatible with the lifestyle that one leads so as to not compromise one at the expense of the other., Basotho Enterprises Development Corporation (BEDCO), being a government organization established with the main purpose of assisting start-ups with potential for profitability and growth to take off, stressed the point of having a plan - writing a meaningful business plan! Abiel Mashala mentioned that they meet with a lot of potential entrepreneurs with good ideas but who eventually disappear when requested to present a business plan entailing sufficient information to be granted funding. He went on at length to elucidate the importance
of putting passion before money, as money kills people’s fighting spirit when they meet challenges in pursuing their ideas until they become a reality. Reananetse Jobo, a recent law graduate shared with the excited students how and why he had decided to not practice as a lawyer and instead venture into business full time. The audience seemed to relate more to him, particularly when he mentioned the fact that he started his own company – Campus Kulcha in his 2nd year at NUL, with the National Manpower Development Secretariat (NMDS) allowance as capital to finance his initial costs to start his operations, driving home the fact that everyone can become a good entrepreneur if they have a burning desire to achieve something and put their mind to it. The BAM Group through Tšepang Tšita Mosena and Ntšepeng Tšita Tikiso put the cherry on the cake when they took to the stage their flamboyant and free-spirited selves, getting the entire hall on its feet. While they cheerfully expressed the importance of venturing into business, they also mentioned one aspect of having a good education to support individual entrepreneurs’ endeavours. Interestingly, they defined an entrepreneur as not being narrow-minded, rather creative, and hands-on and going beyond expected limits in whatever environment they find themselves in. Learning to let go of a venture or redesigning it otherwise was also something worth mulling over, before they descended the stage.
The 10 Talents Construction Company - brain child of one Mr. Lehlohonolo Paul Tšeisa (proudly BCOMM’s current 4th year student) and his partners were next. He unstutteringly sensitized the students about the huge role that entrepreneurs play in the economy, such as creating employment, which in turn leads to betterment of Lesotho in its entirety. He further encouraged the students to exert their full force at entrepreneurship as a course, because of its ability to build a robust foundation for a prosperous nation. This day was not just a normal student - lecturer type of interaction; it engaged everyone present in deep discussion that successfully motivated the attendees as future entrepreneurs to gain courage, take the first step and think out of the box. The students also seemed satisfied by the presentations prepared. This they manifested by the number of questions they asked in an attempt to comprehend more. This was echoed by BCOMM Association President Kopano Lechesa, who in his closing remarks stated how the success of this event had assisted him understand the principle of “passion before money” as he had always wrongly assumed that entrepreneurship was only about making money, which is clearly much more than that. Scores of attendees left the hall in high spirits with a single thought in mind - establishing their own businesses for the betterment of Lesotho. The NUL BCOMM association project team, through Lerato Hlepe’s leadership, outdid themselves in putting the whole event together.
IDM will hold 2nd annual research conference By Palesa Mosola MASERU- Institute of Development Management (IDM) will hold its 2nd annual research conference on Thursday and Friday this week. In a media briefing held on Thursday last week, the Marketing Manager of IDM, Palesa Motleleng Molefi said each and every year IDM holds the research on a rotational basis between Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland and this year the conference will be held in Lesotho where the researchers will share the information on how to improve on their services. Motleng Molefi further said that about 30 papers will be presented by participants from various countries
across the SADC region, who will be showcasing their renewable energy products with special emphasis on solar energy. In addition, Motleleng Molefi said the purpose of research conference is to create an opportunity for academics and researchers worldwide to connect and share their most recent findings in all aspects of methodology, conceptual or theoretical research in economic fields, regarding new trends and approaches in the context of a knowledge based economy. ‘Mamokete Hlaele who is the senior consultant on Public Health Management said at IDM they believe that research is very crucial in assessing community requirements for improvement, ensuring contin-
uous improvement and contributing towards the most effective initiatives of doing things.

The Big Six Clap N Tap summer festival By Phongwazana Sakachane Central Park It was a wonderful day to all Clap N Tap fans when Moafrika FM hosted a gigantic Clap N Tap music festival in the Central Park this past Sunday. According to Rev. Ben Mosala the founder of Balopolloa ba Morena, the festival was hosted by a Clap N Tap radio program called Tšetšetha on Moafrika FM. The festival materialized when he asked his listeners if they would love a Clap and Tap Festival and their response was positive. “We invited choirs throughout the country to take part but only six (6) groups around Maseru participated. The six Clap N Tap groups that entertained the audience with their melodious songs were Barutoana Ba Morena, Balopolloa Ba Morena, CMM, Lerato La Bolumeli, Naleli ea Bophelo and Balateli Ba Tumelo. Speaking with Relax Pastor Motlalepula Mahapane from Barutoana Ba Morena based in Ha Seleso said that the idea behind the festival was to promote Clap N tap music and also build a unification among Clap n Tap groups. He said there were South African guests from a KZN television channel 261. “The festival was an absolute success as the crowd showed up in large numbers. Speaking during the ceremony held at the hospital premises, the Director of Willies Hospital Dr. Cephas Kelvin Hoedoafia mentioned that this is an annual event intended to help the needy by handing out food parcels. asserted that this year unlike the other years, instead of going to the orphanage they called them to the hospital. “God loves a cheerful giver, when you give with nothing but love, good intentions and no expectation of a reward God himself will reward you tremendously. We care for those who have nothing, we also do not discriminate because God does not discriminate either,” he pointed out. He further indicated that their mission is to glorify God by providing opportunities for the less privileged children and families, and to assist them in growing spiritually, fervently, and physically. Born Kuena Makhetha AKA “DJ Linah” a student at National University of Lesotho popularly known for her talent behind the decks. DJ Linah is one of the DJ jays who won the first prize in the Female DJ category 2015; she hails from Khubetsoana,although originally from HaAbia. DJ Linah shares her story on Vodacom superstars 2015. How did DJing come about? Well I have always been a big fan of music; started off as a dancer back in my early days mainly because I was into house music.. When I finished high school and venturedinto tertiary at the Lesotho Agricultural College I tested my ability at DJaying by entering PSI competitions for the search of female DJs but I lost mainly because I was not that

Linare mourn the deaths of their players By Tšeliso Tale LESOTHO -Linare Football Club, one of the oldest football clubs in the country over the weekend mourned the death of their players Lebohang Matamane and Maphothomane Libe. Both players were laid to rest on Saturday in two different southern Maseru villages after they died in two different accidents. Lebohang Matamane died on his way to Leribe from Maseru at Peka in Leribe on Independence Day. At the time of the accident, Matamane was with his only child and his elder brother. He died on his way to one of Maseru’s hospitals. Matamane played his football as a defender for Roma Rovers Football Club before joining Linare Football Club. He was working for Lesotho National Insurance Group (LNIG) at the time of his death. He was born on the 11th December 1984 and passed-on on the 4th October 2015. He was laid to rest last week Saturday at Ha Rasenkisi, Thaba Bosiu, south of Maseru. Two weeks later another Linare defender Maphothomane Libe is said to have committed suicide. He was laid to rest at his home at Lithabaneng. At the time of his death, Libe
played as a defender at Linare and Matlama Football Club. Maphothomane had two way movements between the two clubs as he played for Matlama, then Linare and back to Matlama. He had joined Linare again, which is where he died. Maphothomane was born on the 16th February 1985 and died on 9th October 2015. He was laid to rest on Saturday last weekend. Both players leave behind their wives and one child. A memorial service was held for them at African Methodist Epistolic (AME) hall in Maseru. Lesotho Football Association (LeFA) Secretary General Mokhosi Mohapi and Technical Director Lehlohonolo Thothanyana and Lesotho Premier League Management Committee (PLMC) Public Relations Officer (PRO) Lekholoa Mosito as well as Linare Football Club officials, players and supporters, friends, families and work mates attended the memorial service. The President of Linare and the former coach of Linare, Pitso Mosothoane said, “I know them very well because I coached them; to me these players had similar characters.” He said: “They worked hard. These were the players I could point to as examples of what a football
player should be. Matamane was coachable and I managed to change his style of play.” Mosothoane said Libe was a good defender but he had a unique attitude and “we are partly to be blame for his death, because we failed to protect him and change his character.” He said today they understand him well but it is too late because they cannot bring him back. “I tried to find out from him why at times he wanted to be alone by himself,” said Mosothoane.

Rabale joins Bloemfontein Celtic By Tšeliso Tale MASERU- The 17-years-old Boitumelo “Queen” Rabale is the latest Mosotho woman football player and the youngest to be signed by any South African side, and for that matter Bloemfontein Celtic Women’s team. She follows in the footsteps of Lehlohonolo Seema, who is now the Assistant Coach of Bloemfontein Celtic and the former captain of the club. Motlatsi Shale, Lebajoa Mphongoa and the late Tšeliso Thite, and the likes of Ronny Malefetse, ‘Makoaetose’ Mosala and Tšeliso ‘Frisco’ Khomari,are others who were part of the 1985 Bloemfontein Celtic that won the Mainstay Cup Championship against Kaizer Chiefs. Boitumelo ‘Queen’ Rabale is the leading Goal Scorer in the newly formed Lesotho Women Super League in seven games played and so far even after she has left, no player has overtaken her. She will begin to play for Bloemfontein Celtic after the December window period, since she is a late signing into the team but she is training with her new club. Posholi Posholi, Secretary General of Women’s super league and Likhosatsana Executive Committee Members said they are very happy with Queen’s achievement. Posholi said Queen is one of the very few players who have achieved what she has achieved in this country. “Very few players who are doing very well as soccer players do well in class. Queen has passed her COSC examinations very well, which gives her the opportunity to get into any University in and outside the country,” he explained. Posholi mentioned that this is a blessing because Queen is raised by a single mother and her mother is working at a Thetsane Factory, and it looks like Queen will change their lives for the better. “She is the first player to play her soccer internationally at her age and I believe she is going to make it in the Bloemfontein Celtic Camp,” said Posholi. KTA gets a good start By Tšeliso Tale MASERU-Khubetsoana All Stars (KTA) Basketball Team got off to a good start in the 2015 elite Basketball League in the country and they played and won their first two matches last week easily. KTA All Stars did not play their beginning games due to weather conditions but on Wednesday they played their first match against Leseli and KTA All Stars defeated Leseli Basketball Team 76-50 and went on to beat Bokamoso South by 40-32 on Saturday. The Independence Memorial Basketball Tourney Champions KTA All Stars looks like they will contest for the league and join the defending champions Bashana Ba Heso (BBH) and Lichocha Shooting Rifles (LSR) in the fight for the championship. Since the beginning of the 2015 league, BBH and LSR have not lost or drawn any match they have played, but BBH have played one more game than LSR and BBH is seated at first place of the Lesotho Basketball Association (LBA) National Senior Basketball League and followed by Leseli and LSR in the third place. Leseli are in the second place but they have played more games

Leseli lost 50-76 against KTA and went on to beat Matlama 66-42 on Saturday, while BBH played once against Buffalos on Sunday and beat Buffalos 84-20, Rovers lost 44-91 against Lichocha Shooting Rifles and Matlama forfeited against LP giving LP their first maximum points. Rovers moved four places up this weekend after getting maximum points against Lerotholi Polytechnic (PL) who did not show-up for the match and forfeited it; in the second match of the day on Saturday Rovers went on to win by one (1) basket against Limkokwing University of Creative Technology (LUCT). LUCT forfeited the first game against Tigers and went on to lose the second game 29-30 against
Rovers, while the stalking LP forfeited their match against Rovers. Fako Masupha is back coaching Rovers starting from last week. Matlama feel the impact of having South African players in their team because ii is not every match they will come to, due to financial problems. Matlama suffered a defeat against Leseli because of the lack of confidence of the local players. In the women’s category Tigers got maximum points since LUCT failed to show-up and Shooting Rifle beat Rovers 46-22, these were the only games played since other matches are affected by the suspended league matches due to ongoing national high school exams. LBA had to move some of the second round matches forward to enable the league to keep going and to avoid pressure of the league after the high school exams.
MASERU-I had the opportunity to talk to some African foreigners staying in the country about Likuena’s performance recently. This is after the performances of Likuena against Comoros and Zimbabwe in and outside the country. They said it was disgraceful to see Likuena being knocked out of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers after the good performance they had shown in Comoros, coming back home with a draw but failing to bury the game at home. They blame the government of Lesotho for not giving Likuena players enough incentives, like a monthly allowance of at least M2000 per month, not including the camping allowances. On this one I totally disagree with them because Likuena is the national team not a football team, players come and go based on their current form. By so saying, it will not be possible for the government of Lesotho to pay Likuena monthly allowances. But I have no objection to Likuena players getting a good appearance free of at least M10 000 per official match they play. This is going to forge players who will fight for this country in the field of play. Likuena does not deserve to be out of the 2018 World Cup after being knocked out by Comoros. If they managed to hold Comoros to a 0-0 draw in Comoros, that shows we are capable of defending and that our main problem was how we convert the chances we created. This is what was said by Likuena care-taker coach, Seephephe Matete to Informative Newspaper before they met Comoros in the second round of 2018 World Cup Qualifier against Comoros. Matete said they were working on how to convert the chances but those chances came and we failed to make use of these opportunities. We failed to bury the game in the first half of second leg against Comoros. Our starting lineup was not convincing because we began the match with one striker and we delayed to take chances, even when we had created chances and needed to put more pressure on Comoros’ defence by introducing more strikers and get the goals that we needed. After talking to Zimbabweans staying in country, they said it is unfair to criticize Likuena for losing against Zimbabwe. They said, they have players who have played their football internationally some in South Africa and some in Tunisia, Algeria and others in Europe and they are back. Some of the players who have played against Likuena have represented their clubs in African tournaments and went as far as the finals of the African Champions League. One other factor is the level of the leagues. The Zimbabwe league is very competitive and professional and Lesotho league is still amateurish and not competitive like the Zimbabwe one. In this case I want to agree with them, the level of competition we have in the country says a lot, for the past five seasons. Lioli has been dominating Lesotho football, they have won the league more than any team in the country and that alone shows the level of competition in the country is very low. For the past ten seasons, Lesotho’s league was dominated by government institutions, like Lesotho Defense Force (LDF) and Lesotho Correctional Services (LCS) and Likuena was better than the one we have today; maybe because of the discipline within these institutions and the fact that they earn better salaries, and that influenced their performances.

Zimbabwe smashes Likuena

MASERU - Likuena was knocked out of the CHAN Qualifier Games by their rivals Zimbabwe on Sunday the 25 October 2015. This is the second time Likuena suffers a setback in less than a fortnight, as it has been knocked out of the international tournaments in two different competitions. Likuena played to a 1-all draw with Zimbabwe on Sunday in the CHAN match which was played at Setsoto Stadium, following the game in which Likuena lost 3-1 in the first leg played in Zimbabwe. A fortnight ago Likuena was knocked out of the 2018 World Cup Qualifier by Comoros and this was after Likuena held Comoros to a 0-0 draw in the Comoros and then went on to draw 1-all in Maseru. Comoros qualified with away goal rule; this means Likuena is out of the international competitions, it is quite an unfortunate for Lesotho and Likuena supporters. Likuena is only left with Senior Confederations of South African Football Association (COSAFA) games and Confederations of African Cup of Nations (AFCON). After the Sunday games some of the soccer legends in Lesotho and some from Zimbabwe staying in the country protected Likuena players and their technical team with their statements. They said the blame must be taken to Lesotho Football Administration, because Lesotho football is deteriorating in their hands. They asserted that Likuena cannot expected to do well while the level of Lesotho football league is very low, because Likuena is using the same players from this poor league. They also stated that Lesotho clubs can compete with Brazilian clubs, but what makes it different is that its National Team is made up of players who are playing internationally. My Zimbabwean brother, Ted Msipa said: “It is unfair to blame these boys for being not being able to beat Zimbabwe. The level at which Zimbabwe players are playing is very high as compared to Lesotho Vodacom Premier League. So it is not fair to say that Likuena had the best team while Zimbabwe was playing the second best. Zimbabwe was using their local payers and some of those players have played internationally.” Mahao ‘Bomba’ Matete also said: “The standard of the Lesotho Vodacom Premier League is very poor and the same standard influences the performance of Likuena and other national teams. There is a small pool in which Likuena gets players, we have to go back in the old days and organize competition like Top Mount and let the teams play in their districts and produce the district teams that will represent them nationally and Vision 2020 games for the minors ought to continue so that the coaches could scout for talent.”

They said Lesotho must have a short league and many other little competitions like in Australia where players are involved in highly intensive competitions which improves their standard. One of the young coaches with lots of international experience Shalane Lehohla said: “Likuena players like those of Lioli and Bantu look very fit but they lack agility, flexibility and most of all they lack speed because they lack training skills.” The match was even in the first half but Zimbabwe dominated the second half. Zimbabwe’s goal came in the first 36 minutes through Roderick Mutuma (7) and Likuena goal came in the second half from Ralekoti Mokhahlane’s (2) penalty spot, while Mohau Koenane (1) denied Zimbabwe Saha Blessing Moyo (6) a goal by saving his penalty. With one minute to go Likuena captain Moitheri Ntobo (5) got injured and Likuena had to play and finish thea match with 10 players since they had used all their substitutes. Likuena super striker Tšepo Seturumane hit the up-right early in the second half, but Likuena needed to win the match 2-0 to qualify for the 2016 Rwanda CHAN finals.
