In conversation with the 2022 Mississauga Music award winner, Rob Aguiar, for best local promoter. Rob’s “Glimpse Into The Life Of A Child” initiative selects a new focus yearly and the content is collaboratively created and presented by the “Glimpse Kids."

Congrats on winning the Mississauga Music 2022 Best Local Promoter award! Describe the feeling and reaction upon hearing your name called. It really was a surreal experience. Glimpse initiatives had been nominated a few times previously and that acknowledgement alone was reward enough for me. I was just excited to be part of the event and happy to hang out with some wonderful people that have become great friends over the last 5 years. Nobody in the room was more surprised than I was when my name was called out and it was a wonderful way to celebrate my birthday. I’m super grateful to have been selected.

What motivates you to keep going?

The root of each incredible journey is still the new batch of students I meet every September. Being able to empower their voice, shine a light on their hearts, build community, and spread some positivity to make the world a better place is what motivates me.

Where did the idea originate from for Glimpse?

I have always tried to encourage students to believe that they have a voice that can and should be heard to give the world a glimpse into who they are, what they have to say, and what they can do. Written on the back of our classroom are the words “Building partnerships and creating changes.” If something inspires you, shine

a light on it in hope of inspiring others. If you recognize something that needs to change, then you have the power to build connections and work together to find solutions.

What are you most proud of with Glimpse?

Changing the world one song at a time through our annual music festival called Glimpsepalooza is pretty special. Hosted by the Glimpse Kids, Glimpsepalooza celebrates amazing collaborations by promoting the incredible talents and kind hearts of local artists.

Changing the world one smile at a time through our role as Junior Smile Ambassadors for Operation Smile Canada. With the generous support of local sponsors and donation matches, our fundraising efforts have raised almost $50,000. We have helped to change the lives of more than 200 children via safe access to much needed cleft lip/palate surgery.

Changing the world one heart at a time. Through all that we do, Glimpse Kids grow in confidence, resilience, and compassion. They learn to love and embrace who they are. They learn to lead with their heart, learn from each other’s fabulous differences and make the world a better place.

GRAB YOUR TEACUPS!

Buckle your theatre seats and grab your teacups, British comedians

James and Jamesy are bringing their unique brand of hilarity to Ontario this holiday season. Reminiscent of classic British pantos, O Christmas Tea is rich with wordplay, comic physicality, and cleverly crafted interactive elements, yet it is the duo’s chemistry and charisma that provide the real magic of this play.

“The Christmas season is the time of year when we are encouraged to dream big, embrace imagination, and celebrate child-like excitement for magic and merriment,” says Jamesy (Alastair Knowles) the quirky half of London’s 3-time Impresario Awardwinning duo.

James and Jamesy have already won just about every comedy award they can, and the reason is obvious: these two are exceptional. Stepping away from their Off-Broadway debut in New York, the duo will perform at Mississauga’s Living Arts Centre on December 2nd. Leap to get tickets!

Juxtaposing British propriety with an unabashed love for the absurd, O Christmas Tea casts away the conventions of theatre and joyously breaks the fourth wall. Just about the only thing these two don’t break is their Royal Doulton tea set in this wonderful evening of play and whimsy.

“In O Christmas Tea, Jamesy’s wish for tea is granted, but with catastrophic and uproarious repercussions,” says Knowles. “As tea fills my flat, then bursts through the fourth wall to flood the world, our performance spills from the stage into the audience. Classic aquatic narratives like Jaws, Noah’s ark, and the Titanic are all steeped together and thematically wrapped up in the Christmas spirit.”

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE A GELATO A DAY?

I've wanted to write a book for many years. The idea took firm hold in 2019, when I attended a book proposal seminar in Vancouver. I researched and wrote my book proposal, which was accepted quickly by my Ontario-based publisher, Guernica Editions. I signed my contract in January 2020.

AS A PROLIFIC TRAVEL WRITER, WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO ASSEMBLE THIS ANTHOLOGY AND BRING IT TO LIFE?

It was a great process. My submission requests to fellow writers and in writers' groups coincided with the dawn of the pandemic in spring 2020. We quickly realized that nobody was going anywhere - everyone was grounded, and work about travel dried up. The timing of my requests was serendipitous; colleagues had more time on their hands than they would have otherwise had to write and stories for the anthology.

The editing process was fairly smooth. Several of the works had been previously published, and most of the stories were written by professional writers.

In conversation with Canada’s premiere travel writer and author, Claudia Laroye, on her new book, A Gelato A Day.

Claudia Laroye

WITH THE PANDEMIC HALTING TRAVEL, YOUR BOOK HAS COME OUT AT A TIME WHERE TRAVEL IS RETURNING. HOW WILL A GELATO A DAY IMPACT AND INSPIRE OTHERS TO SEE THE WORLD?

The launch of the book in September 2022 couldn't be better, as the world reopens to travel and people are eager to get out there and rediscover it. I hope that the stories in A Gelato A Day will inspire people to reimagine how they can travel with family, and reinforce why it matters.

I'm hopeful that that release will coincide with some gift purchases during the holiday season, too! It’s an ideal time for families to plan future travel; this book can help shape some of these decisions.

THERE'S QUITE A COLLECTION OF STORIES HERE; HOW DID YOU DECIDE WHICH ONES MADE IT IN?

It was tough! The quality of the writing and the variety of the stories made decisions difficult. I chose a mix of stories that would appeal to people with kids of all ages and those without any children, but who'd once been kids themselves and likely had memories of great or infamous family holidays.

The stories cover all the aspects of family travel - the good, the bad, the not-so-ugly, in funny, insightful and poignant ways. There’s a story for everyone in A Gelato A Day!

TO ASPIRING WRITERS, AND AFTER HAVING RELEASED A GELATO A DAY, WHAT ARE YOUR WORDS OF WISDOM TO THEM?

Only you can tell your story. Once you have, be prepared to shout it from the rooftops, as

book promotion these days rests very much with the author. Know that it's never too late to share your story with the world.

WHAT MOMENTS IN THIS PROCESS BROUGHT YOU THE MOST JOY?

There were many joyful moments during the book editing process. Writing my own story, Bittersweet in Banff, about learning of my father's childhood while on a fatherdaughter trip was one. I had to interview my dad which I thought might be painful. But he was eager to share, and I'm so glad he was and still is here to tell his story. Obtaining several book blurbs in advance of A Gelato A Day’s release was work but joyful toil. My Hail Mary email just before Christmas 2021 resulted in a beautiful blurb from actor and author Andrew McCarthy (of Pretty in Pink and St. Elmo's Fire fame), and I literally jumped around my kitchen when he agreed to do it.

Opening up my first shipment of books and seeing the bright yellow cover and pink ice cream cone was incredibleit became real. A Gelato A Day is in the world, and I’m thrilled!

MSO'S 2022/23 SEASON

AT PARQ VANCOUVER

modern TRAVEL

Getaway

Great food, entertainment and glitzy night scenes can be found in the heart of Vancouver’s entertainment district, at Parq Vancouver.

My gal pal and I are checking in for a weekend escape. Rolling our luggage past the valet, I look up, struck by the size of the complex. There’s nothing like it anywhere else in the city.

Opened in 2017, Parq Vancouver and its shiny copper-toned glazing reflects downtown’s tall towers and the mountains beyond. Parq is a small city-state, with two hotels, five restaurants and three lounges, casino, fitness centre and spa. It’s located in the city’s downtown Yaletown neighbourhood, steps from the CanadaLine station, BC Place Stadium, and close to historic Chinatown.

It has everything a girl and her BFF or significant other could need for a long weekend of culinary tastings, wellness experiences and pampering. Maybe even a few games of poker.

We check into The Douglas Autograph Collection Hotel, one of two hotels at Parq. The boutique property has brought the outdoors in, with a large Douglas Fir log serving as the reception desk and cosy wooden paneling and plaid accents throughout.

The Douglas was recently awarded a coveted Michelin star, one of eight given out to Vancouver hotels. In addition to having the most Instagrammable elevator in the city, the hotel’s D6 Bar is a hot spot of nightlife with a fantastic outdoor patio that comes alive on summer evenings.

We sip D6’s signature Douglas Fir Gin Cocktail and people watch before heading to dinner at The Victor, Parq’s fine dining restaurant.

Inspired by the bounty of the Pacific Northwest and reflecting Vancouver’s cultural diversity, The Victor features sushi, seafood, and a meat lover’s choice of steak, alongside decadent comfort dishes like mac and cheese waffles and stacks of onion rings. We sample a bit of everything and finish with light-as-air crème brulee donuts crowned in maple cotton candy.

Luckily, the 24-hour fitness centre located in the JW Marriott Hotel tower is accessible to all Parq hotel guests. We pop in for a morning run before heading down to breakfast at in-house bistro, Honey Salt.

We slide into a green velvet booth and enjoy oat milk lattes while reviewing the extensive breakfast menu. There’s everything from light starters of yoghurt and granola to pancake stacks and eggs Benedict. I choose a light frittata and note there’s a full brunch on weekends, including Brookie cookies, an irresistible combination of brownie and cookie. It’s a good thing we packed our stretchy pants.

Nothing says girlfriend getaway more than booking self-care sessions. We don comfy robes and head to the Spa by JW on the 17th floor to choose from a selection of body treatments like massage, facials and mani-pedis. My airy treatment room overlooks downtown Vancouver; my friend enjoys a pedicure with scenic views of False Creek.

We could get used to this kind of pampering. I relax on the table as the masseuse gets to work, grateful to enjoy a taste of the glamourous life on the edge of the Pacific.

Vancouver may come off as all Lulu and laid-back lifestyle, but this coastal city nestled between the sea and sky does have a glamourous side.

THE BEST ROAD NEVER DRIVEN

modern TRAVEL

I once would have told you I could only imagine roads continuing to unfurl beneath my tires in this solitary way forever...

I was born on March 12th, 1978, and for nearly seven years, I was an only child. My formative years were steeped in independence. By the time my younger siblings came along, the pattern was set. I was a loner in a large family. It may not be rare, but we all know the look in another introvert's eyes when we see it. That independence, at times to a fault, carried me through the bulk of my life. Getting my driver's license at 16 gained my freedom from public transit and asking others for rides. I’ve racked up over 1 million kilometres across hundreds of cars.

I once would have told you I could only imagine roads continuing to unfurl beneath my tires in this solitary way forever. I’ve been an entrepreneur for much of my career; the unlimited potential it brings is similar to being behind the wheel, of anything. I’ve filmed and edited over 500 professional car reviews, as writer, host and producer. Long drives by myself are therapeutic, relaxing and reflective; I’ve done on average two a week since 1994. Notice a trend?

Things changed in January of 2022 when I gained a co-host. As an already established reviewer of considerable talent, her strengths complimented mine. My independence hopped in the back seat; the two of us began making better work. Our system is simple: we split on-camera driving time to maintain our individual thoughts and opinions. She alone bears my terrible puns. I do the filming and editing, the lifelong creative in me still tuning my skills.

continued...

When you’re always the driver, you often forget

In August, we were in New Brunswick for a travel project which included driving on the famed Fundy Trail Parkway. With two location scouting laps on the drive sheet, we were on the road early - all 30 or so kilometres of it - so I could establish the most photogenic spots, stops and scenery that would best reflect the experience. She drove from beginning to end. She drove from end to beginning. My eyes scanned every inch possible between the silent forest to the north and murmuring Bay of Fundy to the south, divided by the gentlest curves. Two slow laps of one of the most beautiful places in the country. My notes were made in my head and on my phone. Through our unwritten agreement, driving duties would be split the following day - filming day. The GoPro was out, the drone was charged, my Canon 6D had 64 gigs of space pleading to be filled with Canada’s underrated utopia. This is clearly the best part of any performance, no matter if you’re the creator of the performer. I glanced at her mischievous smile, sunglasses reflecting the brilliant sunshine. She grinned at me from the driver’s seat.

The cascading first curves of the parkway are easy to be infatuated by, the Bay of Fundy reveals itself immediately, the neighbouring forest standing guard. First twist, second twist, third turn, fourth sweeping bank, fifth supple bend, sixth shallow arc; all revealing that famed landscape as I used every modern device I had to capture a beauty that has been there forever. A quarter of the way in, she asked if I wanted to drive; I politely declined. Part of it was knowing how much joy she gets from driving. The rest of it was my ever-growing appreciation for this relatively short yet enchanting piece of Canada. When you’re always the driver, you often forget just how much the passenger is able to take in.

The bends kept coming and with every inch she drove, the stronger my appreciation and affection became for the route. For someone so fiercely independent and the only person who loves driving more than the person currently doing so, the passenger seat became my throne. Midway through after a brief lunch stop, we crossed a suspension bridge to show each other how rusty we were at skipping rocks in the

modern TRAVEL

just how much the passenger is able to take in.

Big Salmon River. Back at the car, she hesitated before the driver’s door. Same answer. This passenger stuff was appealing to me.

The hairpin turn with the Bay of Fundy calmly watching from below as the apex, the steep rock faces, the ascending and descending S-turns were, strangely both now and at the time, more enjoyable for someone who could take them all in as they revealed themselves as opposed to the one who had to keep her concentration on the precarious road that was delivering that experience. At midpoint, I switched up the setup to capture drone video and photography of her driving this majestic road. She asked once more if I wanted a hand at the wheel, and we both knew we weren’t going to mess with the current magic.

Near the end of the parkway, we made our way down to the beach to watch where the river met the Bay in a gentle tussle of tides. While it was a moment of serenity being this close to the water, I was irrationally impatient to return to my leather perch. As she handled the final few kilometres of driving, no part of me regretted my

decision to decline driving duties. Not then and not now. My usually indestructible independence had taken a back…err, passenger seat for the first time.

There was no anxiety of being a passenger, no “fear of missing out” feelings; no feeling of being pushed aside. For the first time in 340 months of being a driver, I embraced being an observer. For the thousands of Canadian roads I’ve driven on coast to coast, from the $10,000 cars to the $250,000 cars, the Fundy Trail Parkway is now one of the top five roads I’ve ever been on.

It’s also the only one I’ve never driven.

TOILETRY BAG

Being organized is paramount for a successful trip, and a smart way to keep your bath and shower supplies in order is via a rollout toiletry bag. The one I have has a handy metal hook so I can hang it on the shower curtain or back of the door, and maximize counter space. The leather and waxed canvas make it water resistant, so everything inside is well protected.

6ESSENTIALCARRY-ONTRAVELACCESSORIES

As a frequent traveller, and with travel seeing a strong resurgence, I’ve learned what the essentials are for your coveted carry-on baggage.

PORTABLE USB BATTERY CHARGER

My portable USB battery charger keeps my phone charged and the handy LED display shows me its progress. On a recent trip to Louisiana, it came in handy as a colleague’s phone was almost out of power so, of course, I lent it to her. When we returned, she purchased the exact same charger I have. Walled power sources can sometimes be elusive, so it’s always good to be prepared.

PASSPORT CASE

Since my initial trip to Cancun, Mexico in my early teens, I’ve used a passport case as it’s a wonderful way to organize your travel documents. The best ones have ample space and pockets for my passport, airline ticket, boarding pass, cash, and zippers to keep everything protected.

HEADPHONES

I like to watch movies on my iPad during a flight, so having a good pair of headphones is essential. There are several types of headphones. I prefer a good set of noise-cancelling Bluetooth over-the-ear headphones like the Beats Solo 3 Wireless Headphones. These bad boys have theatre-like sound for such a compact design.

ACCESSORIES

MESSENGER STYLE LAPTOP BAG

Having a nice modern bag for my laptop is essential, but it has to fit more than just my laptop. The Spencer Grey & Tan Laptop Bag from Trendhim is both good-looking and quite practical. It has plenty of room to carry my laptop, battery charger, cables, headphones, power strip, and any other tech item I may need while travelling.

SURGE PROTECTOR POWER STRIP

It never fails - you get to your hotel room and there aren't enough USB outlets to plug into. It’s why I always travel with a compact Surge Protector Power Strip. It doubles as an extension cord and a power strip, with both DC and USB connections. Very handy when you need to charge a few devices simultaneously.

No matter where you're going or what you're doing, having the right gear can make all the difference. Happy travelling!

FORWARD TOGETHER

BEYOND

As Modern Mississauga Media enters its eight year in 2023, I do what I do every anniversary; I evaluate the previous years, the last year, review the wins and the lessons, and then strategize and plan for the upcoming years.

I stumbled upon a “7 year itch” article recently and while it primarily references relationships, I thought of it from my relationship with my business. Am I getting bored, uninterested and unhappy with Modern Mississauga? Absolutely notI feel I’m just getting started. However, after a few weeks of introspection and digging deep into the past seven years, there are things that need to change. Not because they’re “bad” but rather, to improve and strengthen the foundation and add new wings to the proverbial building.

If you’re wondering if I’ve failed at anything with the company, I absolutely have. I don’t call it failing; I call it learning experiences. It seems trivial on the surface to use different words for what can be interpreted as the same thing but for me, words matter as does mindset. I used to classify it as a “failure” and I’d only focus on the negative result opposed to the entire

process. Once that terminology changed, so did the results. And now I’m not weary of lessons; I embrace them when they’re here. Looking forward, there’ll be some significant changes here at Mississauga’s community media company.

The bi-monthly interactive digital magazine will keep marching forward providing smart, relatable and local content through a beautifully designed medium. There’ll still be daily articles on the website and a smart social presence.

What’s changing is the scope of content and how it’s presented. I’m looking to have meaningful conversations within our community and share them here. I’m looking to enhance the current version of Modern Mississauga Media and broaden the appeal to more community members by creating interactive content through video and writing.

Mississauga is in the early days of significant change from the LRT, Lakeview, some new councillors, new developments, city facilities and more. And now is the time to strengthen and broaden the relationship Modern Mississauga has with the community. I’m not looking to boil the ocean; I’m looking to do things right instead

modern FEATURE MOVING
INTO YEAR 8 &

of rushed, without sensationalist headlines. Yes, it will take time but slightly changing course for a better route isn’t done in one day, one week, one article or one video.

There’ll be more video content, which will bolster the already heavy amount of video created here. With a heavy amount of information consumed via video, plus social media pushing short-form vertical video aggressively, expect an increase in output. Not to spam levels, mind you. It’ll be well-curated, appealing and relevant content simply in larger volumes.

There’ll be more conversations, more exchanging of ideas, an increase in contributors sharing their thoughts and stories.

I’m sharing this with you as whether you’ve been here since day one or if this is your first connection with Modern Mississauga, I’m happy you’re here, I thank you for the support and I’m excited for what’s ahead. There are more forward changes upcoming that I’m confident will be well-received… you’ll know when they’re here.

MODERN MISSISSAUGA: THE ROLE-PLAYING GAME

The year is 20X2. The weather is hell, the plagues are worse, and Realtors rule the land like the robber barons of old. But deep within the darkened ruins of civilization lies a city where dreams still shine bright. Do you have what it takes to become the mayor of Modern Mississauga?

GETTING STARTED

You will need some 6-sided dice, a pencil, and 0-3 friends. Begin by choosing a Class for your character. Each Class has a unique Special Ability that will help you earn Votes on the Campaign Trail. The first player to earn 10 Votes wins.

CLASSES REALTOR

Buyer’s market, seller’s market, doesn’t matter—it’s never been a better time to invest in real estate.

Special Ability: Neo-Feudalism. Convert your Rental Properties to Votes at a rate of 2 for 1.

CROMBOT

Once a robot butler to Mayor Bonnie Crombie, you were keyed by a City Councillor and now you’ll do anything

to dismantle the system.

Special Ability: RECALCULATING. You may spend 1 Spare Part to reroll a die.

DRUID

A peaceful wizard of nature. The salmon is your brother, the seagull your uncle.

Special Ability: Rat King. Swap your number of Votes for your number of Rats.

CRAIG Despair made flesh.

Special Ability: Cosmic Antipathy.

At any point during the game, you may roll 1 additional die. Nothing happens.

GAMEPLAY

Each turn, roll 2 dice (or 1 die twice, if you're cheap). Then consult the table on the following page. Your dice tell you which Big Issue you encountered on the

Campaign Trail that day. Your first roll determines the column, your second roll determines the row. Read the issue facing Modern Mississaugans, promise them a solution, then claim the indicated number of Votes and Other Resources. Keep track of everything in the spaces provided.

HURRICANE WARNING!

But be warned: every path to the mayor’s office runs through Hazel McCallion, who is nearing the end of her decades-long rejuvenation cycle outside space and time. If she awakens before any player collects 10 votes, the crown is hers!

Whenever you make a stop on the Campaign Trail, cross it out. If any player stops there again, it counts as a Time Paradox.

If your total Time Paradoxes reach 7, Hazel McCallion returns and the game is over.

MALTON MINUTES

Fall is an incredible time to look at how to celebrate all that is local. Pumpkin Spice season is more than just a marketing ploy it is a whole reason to get out into the community and find the perfect way to soak up the last of the fall sunshine.

Need some Malton centric inspiration? Paul Coffey Park is wonderful not just the fun castle themed park, but for cricket, basketball or a family picnic. Don’t overlook the many incentives at visitmississauga.ca for planning a staycation here in Mississauga to add to your fun or to arrange for family to visit.

Coming up this month of course is Diwali a five day celebration of lights after the summer harvest. Each of the five days has its own theme but linking them all are overarching themes of family, colourful rangolis and of course food. Look for the traditional lamps and their

decorative creations to be displayed at homes, workplaces and places of worship for the festival.

Shopping local is still important, don’t overlook the incredible service providers we have all across Malton as well. Of course we can all use a bit of self care from our spas, salons and more but don’t overlook the contribution of our local accountants, law firms and training providers. While we don’t shop at them our local not for profits are a critical part of our community. No matter what holiday season you celebrate consider supporting a local not for profit to help our community continue to thrive.

WHAT DOES BEING SAFE LOOK LIKE NOW?

With a different booster shot having been available from the 26th of September and indoor events on the horizon many of us are evaluating what that means. To be clear, many of us are not as the pandemic and the precautions have worn down the public to a sense of inevitable “we are all going to get it” feeling.

Having said that it’s good to review what kind of steps you can take to reduce risks, if you have family that is more vulnerable. What are some easy options?

• Plan for ventilation, think about how to create airflow in your space or use a combination of indoor and outdoor space for gatherings.

• Testing is still a great way, if your planning a larger family event (or even the planner for a work one) consider testing as a way to reduce the risks.

Masking may not be practical for a dinner, but it can be for many other types of gatherings. While not required it is still recommended and a good way to reduce the risk in smaller spaces.

With all that what’s the number one way you can reduce risk? Stay home if your sick, encourage your friends, family & coworkers to do the same. Don’t assume that cough is nothing take a test and see (Tests are still free and available at many drug stores and grocery stores).

I get it we’ve all had enough, we want to see people, festivals and concerts return and so much more. We can and should do that, but we also want to respect each others choices to protect ourselves and our families. So the most important way you can keep each other safe is by leading with kindness and understanding the choices that people make.

THE MULTI-TALENTED &

MULTI SPORT VOICE OF

Matt Cullen has been the voice of the Mississauga Steelheads and the Raptors905 on Sauga960AM but that’s just the beginning….

PRAVEEN AMIRTHARAJ: How did you get your start in broadcasting?

MATT CULLEN:

I've always loved watching and listening to sports games going back to my childhood, particularly with a passion for play-by-play commentary. I would hide my old Sony Walkman underneath my pillow and listen past my bedtime. Much later when I was in my final year of university, I had the opportunity to call USPORTS hockey and basketball with no previous experience. I was hooked. After a few years of working mostly outside of sports, I decided it was finally time to "go for it".

PA: What do you think has been the key to your success thus far?

MC: Legendary sports broadcaster Jim Van Horne was one of my first instructors and is a longtime mentor to me. From the beginning, he encouraged me to be as versatile as possible. Say "Yes" as much as you can. I've always kept that in mind and calling multiple sports has become a big part of my skill set.

PA: Who’s play by play style you most emulate ?

MC: No one. I've always strived to find my own voice. I find that every broadcaster has his/her own unique flair and personality. We all have our favourite broadcasters but I think if you try and emulate someone else, you are not being yourself. Most audiences will be able to see and hear that quite easily.

PA: What annoys you the most about broadcasters when you watch a game ?

MC: Overtalking, especially in big moments. On a TV broadcast, I think the pictures and natural sound will almost always be the strongest and most compelling to the viewer. I think it is naturalespecially for young broadcasters - to overtalk these big moments. Listening to my old tapes, I know I certainly did...and in a few years, I'll probably still say the same!

PA: Do you prefer announcing on TV or Radio or does it matter ? MC: Both calls are very different and I enjoy both in their own way. Radio is a much more descriptive call. Choosing concise, efficient wording is key and often the most difficult. TV has different challenges. There isn't pressure to fill every second of the action but most times you have a producer speaking in your ear throughout the game. And while that is going on, you also have to look natural on-camera.

PA: If you had the opportunity to call your dream game, which one would have it been?

MC: That's a tough one. I think every broadcaster dreams of calling the big game at the highest level. Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs or the NBA Finals. The Super Bowl, the Grey Cup, the World Series, that Gold-Medal Olympic moment. Maybe the next one will be Canada at the FIFA World Cup!

PA: What is the hardest part of your job ?

MC: The preparation. It takes hours and sometimes days & weeks to be prepared for games and tournaments.

SAUGA960

PA: What’s your best advice for the young up and coming broadcasters ?

MC: It all starts with preparation. It sets you up for success. I also think being creative and bringing your own brand & style to your work is key. Unlike in past generations or even in the last few years, there are now so many different ways and platforms for people to see your work.

PA: Do you have a signature call ?

MC: I don't have a signature call - I have played around with a few different ones over the years but covering and calling multiple sports, there hasn't been one that fits... not yet anyways. I think my "trademark" is excitement and energy. Most of the

feedback I receive is that my passion comes through with my energetic style.

PA: Which broadcast that you called in recent memory are you most proud of ?

MC: I recently came back from the Canadian Little League Baseball Championship in Calgary with CBC Sports. It's a tournament that means so much to the kids (10-12 years old) and their families. I was mostly solo in the broadcast booth, calling 3-games a day. Telling each team's and player's story in the right way comes with a lot of preparation and challenges. In most cases, it's a once-in-a-lifetime event for the kids to play baseball on TV and I am proud to be a part of it.

Cool your

9 nifty tips on how to keep your home warm in winter

modern LIFESTYLE

your spending

With the cooler weather here and upcoming winter season, it’s time to run through some ideas to stay warm and save some cash while enjoying your home. We’ve put together nine for you - let us know what you’d add to the list!

1. Inspect/replace the weather stripping around your exterior doors, range hood and dryer vents. Basically anywhere where the cold air can invade your palace of warmth. For your front and back doors, look into getting a "sweep", which can keep the warm air where it belongs.

2. Inspect/replace the caulking around your windows as it's a fairly simple DIY solution.

3. If you have a ceiling fan, run it in reverse mode at a low speed. It distributes the warm, pooled air (because hot air rises) throughout the room. Logical on the surface? No. Effective? Yup.

4. Program your thermostat for cooler temperatures during the day. Try 17 C during the day, 19 C when you're home at night and 18 C while sleeping. Before you say "blasphemy!” read the next tip.

5. Layer, layer, layer. Sweaters can increase body temperatures by a couple of degrees. So can long underwear. A long sleeved shirt and a sweater brings you up to nearly 5 degrees of extra warmth. Heck, even wear your ugly Christmas sweater. With the cash you save on heating costs, you can invest it into a couple of new ugly sweaters.

6. Cook! You'll save money on take-out and create warmth from the stove. It won't warm your entire living area but the kitchen and adjacent room(s) will be warmer.

7. Sleep with the whole gang, including socks, sweaters, long underwear, flannel anything, extra blankets, sweatshirts, and anything else that's warm-worthy.

8. Light some candles to keep the room you're in warmer.

9. Clean your furnace filter, have your furnace serviced yearly to make sure it's in tip top shape and running efficiently, keep your vents obstruction free, wear indoor slippers, sip on some hot chocolate or mulled wine.

These tips will help keep your heating bills lower and your body temperature higher.

DECANTING DIGEST:

Three great wines for autumn

modern FOOD & DRINK

autumn entertaining

Autumn is a special time for entertaining. Summer’s bounty of fresh vegetables gives way to a harvest that benefits from roasting and caramelization.

There’s a crispness in the air that makes gathering around a fire feel like an ideal way to spend an evening among family and friends. And the feeling of warmth that surrounds us there translates into a greater warmth within us.

If you’ll have loved ones gathering with you this autumn, give these wines a try. They add just the right punctuation to a variety of dishes that are likely to grace your table as the temperatures dip and the leaves begin to fly.

CANONICA A CERRETO RISERVA

CHIANTI CLASSICO 2016

Tuscany, Italy | LCBO # 275867

$24.95

Medium-bodied reds that marry fruit with warm complements are a perfect way to transition out of the lighter wines of summer and look ahead to frosty days. This highly tradtional Chianti Classico carries DOCG designation—check out the Decanting Digest column “A Tour of Tuscany” if you’d like to learn more about what that means—layers flavours of cherry amid cedar and licorice notes. Turn to this overperformer as richer dishes like braised short rib return to your table. Score: 8/10.

CAVE SPRING SELECT LATE HARVEST RIESLING 2017

Jordan Village, Ontario | LCBO # 415901 or direct from the winery

$24.95

Of the wines being reviewed here, this is perhaps the most straightforward: it tastes of summery-sweet strawberries, through and through. There’s little nuance to it, but for the right person, that can be a good thing. It’s a refreshing and predictable companion to charcuterie or chocolate-based treats on a hot day, or it can be something different for drinks on the deck all on its own. Score: 7.5/10

FIELDING ESTATE WINERY UNOAKED CHARDONNAY 2020

Beamsville Bench, Ontario | LCBO # 164491 or direct from the winery

$16.95

Chardonnay doesn’t need oak to shine, and some of the best examples of that fact can be found right here in Ontario. And as a bonus, underappreciated varietals tend not to be overpriced. Fielding Estate Winery is a standout in many areas, but their Unoaked Chardonnay is an especially brilliant one. This 100% VQA Chardonnay features notes of late summer fruits like melon, plum, and sweet apple, underscored by a crisp minerality that makes it pair well with salty and savoury dishes. Try it with sesame-crusted seared Ahi tuna in a tamari glaze. Score: 7.5/10.

SLOW COOKER VeganChili

There’s a reason slow cookers are so readily associated with autumn: they’re perfect for creating low-maintenance and hearty meals, which is exactly what we all need when the weather gets cooler and the kids go back to school.

This vegan chili fits that very bill. Follow the recipe as-is and it’s an affordable, sustainable, and easy to prepare weeknight meal, or add any pre-cooked ground meat if you need it to go a little further.

You’ll need a 6-quart slow cooker to accommodate these quantities. This recipe makes plenty of leftovers unless you’re feeding a crowd, and they freeze well for even quicker meals down the road. Those jalapeños pack plenty of heat, so go down to one or omit them entirely if your crew won’t tolerate it.

If you’d like to pair this with a robust red wine, you’ll find one of those and two more wines perfect for fall in this issue’s Decanting Digest on page 54 & 55.

modern FOOD & DRINK
56 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | AUTUMN 2022

8 servings)

2 onions

4 cloves garlic

4 stalks celery plus a handful of celery leaves

3 bell peppers in a variety of colours

2 jalapeño peppers (optional)

1/4 c cooking oil

A few sprigs of fresh thyme, stems removed

1 tbsp chili powder or to taste

Salt and pepper to taste

3 10 oz cans beans (we chose black, white kidney, and pinto)

2 28 oz cans whole tomatoes

Green onions and corn chips

DIRECTIONS:

1. Finely chop the garlic and set aside in a small bowl.

2. Finely dice the onions, celery, bell peppers, and jalapeños (if using) and set aside in a medium bowl.

3. Heat oil in a large skillet at medium heat. Add garlic and sauté until fragrant and starting to brown, about 30 seconds.

4. Add the remainder of the diced vegetables. Increase burner to medium-high and sauté, stirring occasionally, until vegetables are releasing less steam and are lightly browned, 8 to 12 minutes. (Sautéing the jalapeños may cause caustic vapours. If your space Is not well-ventilated or if you prefer, add these later with the rest of the ingredients.)

5. Season with thyme, chili powder, salt and pepper, and sauté for one more minute.

6. Pour the contents of the skillet into the crock of a 6-quart slow cooker.

7. Drain and rinse each can of beans and add to vegetable mixture. Add full contents of each can of tomatoes and the tomato paste. Stir to combine. Place the lid on the slow cooker, then turn it on to cook for eight hours on low or four hours on high.

8. Serve garnished with chopped green onions and crushed corn chips.

I used the Hamilton Beach 6 Quart Programmable Defrost Slow Cooker. It comes with a temperature probe, flexible time and temperature options, and works well for frozen meat, as it defrosts first, then cooks it until done. Best of all, it’s dishwasher safe.

SENSIBLE SMARTPHONE VIDEO ACCESSORIES

With nearly everyone using a smartphone paired with the popularity and the nearly non-existent barrier to entry for social media apps, we’re in a world where anyone can become a content creator. I embrace that as it allows for enhanced creativity, different styles and approaches to content and encourages others to improve their craft. Whether you’ve created one or 1,000 pieces of content, these are the tools that can help elevate your material.

1 modern TECHNOLOGY 6

1 2 3

MICROPHONES

Poor audio and stellar video results in a diminished product. The two types of microphones I use are a wireless lapel microphone and a shotgun microphone so all of my shooting locations are covered. Don’t let wind, background noise and other interruptions derail what could be a strong video.

TRIPODS

Stability in your videos/pictures are key and using a tripod, monopod, gimbal, selfie stick, etc. are the best ways to do so. There are various sized tripods and I use both a small and large one for various environments. Gimbals are popular, are multi-functional with various shoot modes and coming down in price. There are even some upgraded tripods that have accessories that let you add lights, microphones, a second screen and a power source to them.

LIGHT

Another key component of composition is light, which can take what you capture from good to outstanding. If your content is vlog style, consider investing in a ring light with a few different intensity settings and remember to place it 45 degrees from you opposed to head on. If you’re not on camera, a portable light with various shades and brightness, does the trick. Yes, you can use the built in flash but having a second light source ups your game.

2

4 3

4 5 6

PORTABLE POWER

There’s finite battery life per charge on everything, including your phone. Remove the “I only have X battery life left” and replace it with a portable charger. Don’t have a creative session cut short or rush it by running out of power.

CAMERA BAG

Staying organized and knowing where all your gear is prior to and on location is paramount. Imagine finding the perfect location at the perfect time with the perfect creative vision only to realize you left your microphone/battery/tripod at home. There are several sized options with various pockets/ pouches/zippers that can fit your smartphone gear.

EDITING APPS

The core social media apps have built-in editing capability that’s simple yet useful. To bolster your finished product, pick from dozens of free apps that, with a bit of time invested, can help transform your raw footage into something eye-catching. From adding captions, sound, transitions, cropping, etc., find the right app for you. Some free apps have in-app purchase options while there are paid apps that come with more firepower. Invest time determining what in fact is right for you and know that features vary from app to app.
