A Word from the General Director

Mrs. Omaya Zamel

A

s we reflect on the 2018-2019 school year, please join us in acknowledging and celebrating the many successful learning experiences and educational opportunities that have taken place for our students. We are proud of all of the academic opportunities we offer our students, with a challenging, yet flexible American academic program as well as the national program that highlights our cultural heritage and meets our students’ individual needs and interests. Our sincere goal is that each student graduates with a plan that has the skills necessary to be successful in his/ her future endeavors. We have stood by our founding principle that education is a continuous journey, not a race. The Modern American School continues to maximize students’ role by placing them at the center of the learning process. To achieve this end, we continue to offer on-going teacher training that focuses on student engagement grounded in reallife experiences. The outcome of this training is that students have become responsible for their learning and led the exploration far beyond the regular classroom setting. To provide a platform for studentcentered learning, we provide a plethora of cutting edge technological resources that allow students the

opportunity to research and access information from around the world. As part of our continuous improvement journey, we introduced initiatives to enhance student learning and focus on the overall wellbeing of our students. For example, we incorporated the Standing Desks, the Read and Ride program, as well as “Raz-Plus” and “I Read Arabic” reading programs into our learning environment to enhance students’ focus, comfort and maximize learning opportunities. We also introduced online courses such as writing and math business-focused courses and a technology course. The AdvancED reaccreditation for the fourth time since 2003 came as a celebration of our growth through our educational journey. After a thorough and comprehensive evaluation of the school’s educational program, improvement plan, and learning environment, we received a high score of 378 out of 400 points. The average score for accredited schools in the Middle East and Africa is 278-283; we beat the average by close to 100 points. I would like to wish all of our MAS family a relaxing and refreshing summer vacation, and we look forward to seeing you next year.

The American Program at MAS Jerald Risner The implementation of the American program at MAS is unique as we fully utilize its flexibility to tailor our courses to fit students’ individual interests while maintaining the rigor of the program. With a wide selection of courses, each course is designed with the students’ needs and interests in mind. This program allows for authentic learning to take place where students create a tangible, useful products connected to real life experiences which demonstrate a deeper understanding of the content. An example of authentic learning is the economics market where students created business model based on real supply and demand situations. The program also focuses on character education based on instilling pride in one’s cultural heritage; students are taught universal values that they apply through extracurricular activities, including charitable events. Our American program helps students to matriculate into top universities and pursue successful careers as we are committed to exposing our students to new and high demand career opportunities. As part of our Career Orientation Program, we held multiple Career Fairs throughout the year to increase awareness among students towards non-traditional careers in technology, thus providing our students with access to world class learning and career opportunities.

A Word from Deputy Director Dr. Maher Zamel Our goal is to challenge students to reach their full potential as global and lifelong learners. We strive to develop an educational system that best prepares the adults of tomorrow through catering to the needs of an ever-changing world. At MAS, we are proud of our American Program of Study that embodies those necessary changes needed to offer our students a comprehensive and balanced educational program. This allows them the choice and flexibility to focus on their coursework and extracurricular activities, while at the same time staying true to the core educational foundation that has built our American Program of Study as one of the best. This is evidenced by our steady stream of graduates matriculating at top colleges and universities worldwide, highest merit-based scholarships awarded to graduates, as well as our strong alumni base that can be found across all professional fields. The well-rounded educational program at MAS also prepares our students for life, where they master core subjects, while building their character with the ability to deal with change maturely. In the face of tremendous change, our students master the soft skills of communication, creative thinking, and flexibility needed to raise globally minded individuals who understand and appreciate other cultures as well. This is a unique advantage that our education instills in each one of our graduates as we bid them farewell on their individual journeys.

Thank you for another wonderful and productive school year. I cannot thank you all enough for your endless hours of commitment, for coming to events, reading, donating and supporting whatever was necessary to help our students. We have had memorable experiences this year; in March we received some amazing reports while the school was going through the process of re-accreditation. The teachers and students proved that MAS is certainly a center of excellence and a respectable educational institution. We introduced new reading applications, which will nurture our students to become lifelong learners and future leaders. We also redesigned our classrooms to make them more studentcentered; this certainly was an enormous change for the students to adapt. They are now more independent, using their problem-solving skills more and asking endless questions; this has definitely extended their learning abilities and set them up for better academic success in the future. Our Professional Development program, fully supported by our School Director Mrs. Omaya Zamel, has helped teachers learn more about different ways of assessment. For now, we are saying goodbye to our KG2 students as they continue their educational journey and hello to our next year’s graduates. Have a great summer vacation and please keep reading! Elementary School Dear Students, It was my pleasure to be a member of the MAS family this year. As a principal, I was delighted and honored to witness your growth in heart and mind every day. Together, as dedicated parents, diligent teachers, and leading administrators, we could continue our commitment to develop your intellectual capacity and social competence. As the years go by and with every new chapter in your life, remember that you stem from the Home of the Eagles, so face the challenges with strength, wisdom, patience, and serenity. And remember that “if you can’t fly, run; if you can’t run, walk; if you can’t walk, crawl, but whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward.” The future belongs to you, so keep your mind and heart open to sculpt it the way you want.

Reading Celebrations Becoming a lifetime reader is dependent on developing a deep love for reading. Elementary School students had a reading competition, where they were required to pick a story and practice reading it, foucusing on speed, accuracy, and proper expression in one minute. We are proud of our fluent readers! Keep in mind,“A person who won’t read has no advantage over one who can’t read.” Mark Twain

Elementary School Celebrating World Storytelling Day We celebrated the World Storytelling Day, where we hosted parents to tell fun and informative stories for all elementary grade levels. Our students were introduced to a plethora of cultural traditions that will be engrained in their minds with good memories of that day.

We are proud to present unique, student-made projects in our annual Maker’s Fair. This year’s theme “ASK curiously, THINK critically, and INVESTIGATE thoroughly” has been widely received as our best so far.

Save the Children Workshop In partnership with MAS, Save the Children organized a three-day workshop for all staff members to train them on how to deal with different types of child abuse. This workshop stressed the importance of our students’ overall well-being which is in line with our school’s child protection policy.

Open My Eyes Body Awareness Part of our mission in the Modern American School is to provide our students with profound knowledge that helps them stay safe. On March 26th, we hosted a safety activist, who gave an awareness session to our students about body boundaries and privacy. She taught students to say NO loudly to any person who tries to break those boundaries, and trained them on how to get out of any uncomfortable situations.

Today’s Readers are tomorrow’s leaders!

This year we introduced Raz-Kids as an additional educational tool to extend reading beyond the classroom environment. Raz-Kids is a great application that meets all levels and interests as it provides a digital library of differentiated books. It is student-friendly with fun features that make it an enjoyable experience for our students. It is a great way to differentiate between our learners as there are different reading levels and audio features which enhance the reading experience for them. After reading, stars are rewarded to praise them for their reading accomplishments.

Middle School

My beloved students,

Samah Hamad Middle School Principal

What a journey this year has been; it is hard to believe that the year has passed so quickly. Our journey began with tentative steps, but has over time taken you to remarkable heights. You have encountered trials and tribulations along the way, yet you soldiered on and came out the stronger for them. You have experienced exceptional and magical moments and you have created memories that will be remembered and cherished for the rest of your lives. Henry Ford wisely said, “Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress and working together is success.” As we look back, certainly there was a beginning, and thankfully there was also progress and yes - undeniably we have been successful!

Naseem Zamel

Student Life Coordiinator

In spite of the obstacles that were faced along the way, the end result of our coming together, keeping together, and working together, is the successful culmination of this most wonderful year. Looking forward for a new beginning, new achievements, new memories, and new success.

High School

Mr. Blake Rodabaugh High School Principal

Dr. Maher Zamel Deputy Director

Dear High School Students, It is hard to believe that the year has passed so quickly. It seems like just a moment ago when we welcomed you on the first day with the musical band and banners, and now it draws to an end! Amazing things happened along the way. Our basketball team won the national championship, our students performed talent shows, cultural celebrations, and celebrated Halloween and prom. You have created memories that will last the rest of your lives. Please always remember that the end of one stage is the beginning of another. It is Ok to be sad that it has come to the end, but also be happy and excited that it signals a new beginning. For each class or grade level, this is both the end and the beginning. It is both the end of this year and the beginning of the next for seniors as graduation marks the end of high school, the beginning adulthood and the rest of your life. Think of the beginnings and endings as doors to be opened or closed. So yes, a door has closed and there is no going back, but think of all of the doors that are open to you now. Which will you choose? What are your options and your choices? Remember that life is a series of choices, so choose, but choose wisely. Sincerely, Blake Rodabaugh High School Principal

Professional Development

Professional Development Matters Professional development is about life-long learning and growing as an educator. In education, research has shown that teaching quality and school leadership are the most important factors in raising student achievement. At MAS, professional development is one way we enhance quality education through equipping teachers with new strategies to improve their performance and raise student achievement. MAS implements a rigorous, and ongoing intensive Professional Development program to help teachers improve their skill sets, and learn innovative teaching strategies to prepare their students for success in an everchanging world; they need to be able to teach students how to use emerging technologies, how to navigate through evolving professions, how to communicate effectively to different audiences, and how to think critically and solve problems. The MAS Professional Development program encompasses both internal and external workshops; Induction Week at the beginning of every year; multiple professional development days through the year; and peer mentoring. This year, over 20 teachers and administrators led by our General Director Mrs. Omaya Zamel attended the global Dream Big Conference hosted by AdvancED in Cairo. During this conference, we had the pleasure of working with highly trained educational professionals from around the world. We felt the world of continuous improvement is a stimulating area in which we could work and continue to meet inspiring people to ensure our institution remains at the cutting edge within a set of international research-based standards. Such conferences allow us time to reflect on how advanced MAS is in terms of progressive, global education, and the long journey we have taken to get to where we are. We believe that there is always more to learn and new skills to attain.

Anti-Bullying Campaign T

o reinforce the concept of a safe learning environment, the Counseling Department launched an Anti-Bullying Campaign in October to raise awareness on the subject and to train students on how to deal with bullying situations. The overall goal is to inspire our students to choose respect and peace over bullying behavior. The campaign included purposeful activities, such as integrating the subject of bullying within classrooms in coordination with the various departments in school. Students crafted persuasive essays about bullying, held group discussions, drew up posters and sketches, and attended seminars. Our students in coordination with our counselors also conducted purposeful presentations and lectures about bullying. Additionally, students wore a blue t-shirt with anti-bullying slogans on them to show our solidarity together in alignment with other schools around the world. Abdel Rahman Rabie Counselor

Over 160 University representatives visit MAS each year

MAS Academic Counselors take pride in helping high school students achieve their dreams and embarking on the journey that lies ahead. As the breadth and diversity of university choices costantly expand and new opportunities emerge, the need to provide advocacy and support for students and families contiues to be the main focus of the College Counseling Department at the Modern American School. The College Counseling Department takes on the academic and career counseling in one busy but holistic approach. Following students from Grade 9 through Grade 12, guiding them through the entire college application and admission process, writing recommendation letters, contacting college admission offices and providing them with detailed information about specific colleges, the academic counselors have the opportunity to create a long-standing relationship with students guiding them towards a life beyond secondary school that suits their individual chosen career paths. Through our commitment to providing quality education in a continuous improvement journey that promotes student engagement, creativity, critical thinking and innovation, our students continue to achieve great results and attend the most prestigous universities worldwide.

Graduation Reflections Class of 2019

My favorite part of senior year was the day when we took our graduation pictures. These were unforgettable moments that we will cherish for the rest of our lives. I will always remember the jokes we cracked about our formal attire and the many funny and serious poses we took for our pictures.
