EDITOR'S LETTER

A very special introduction to Modeliste’s Empowerment issue by Christina Milian.

Hello and welcome Modeliste readers! It is with great pleasure I have the opportunity to be this month’s Chief Editor of Modeliste Magazine. It is, quite simply, a dream come true. With that said, I would first like to say “thank you”. For years, I was so afraid to use my voice to evoke change. Fear of rejection, close-mindedness or the powers that be silencing me for having an opinion that didn’t count. However, as of late, thanks to many strong women before me and within this generation— I see women finding their voice. I have been able to use my platform to not only inspire, but to be a valuable place for knowledge. Now, I am unafraid to be outspoken & am taking necessary steps towards fighting for our rights and the rights of others. I get butterflies just thinking about it. 2020 has thrown many of us for a loop, but my optimistic side reflects on this and can see us on the other side stronger, wiser, enlightened & more united. To all the women reading this, if you don’t know by now, know your power! We are such beautiful creatures. Our experiences give us the capabilities to accomplish so much and create the answers for change. As the oldest of three girls, I was taught to take accountability for my actions and to be a good example. Sisterhood is an unbreakable bond that binds us. I have since been able to implement this into my business motto, my teachings as a mother and my friendships. It’s the foundation of my integrity. As a first generation LatinX Cuban-American woman, I have experienced many inequalities and want to say thank you to those who may not relate to my race, but have empathy for our daily challenges. Through the inequalities we have experienced as women, we understand the gap and mistreatment we adhere to, but also understand we are the enforcers of change for the better. Being vulnerable is one of our best assets. Women are capable of being strong leaders, and I’m so happy I get to witness such major triumphs in my lifetime. As a veteran of the entertainment business, I can only hope that I have and can continue to inspire women & LGBTQ+ from all over that they too can be something. You are important. I stand beside you. Let’s continue to guide each other into greatness, peace and love.

MODEL DIARIES with CHRISTINA Where are you from? I was born in New Jersey and raised in Waldorf Maryland. And then from 13 on I lived in California.

What inspired you to become an actress? As a kid, I was very imaginative and creative. I grew up in the era of Michael Jackson and Madonna, Julia Roberts, Demi Moore and Bruce Willis, and they all really inspired me to want to be on television and perform. My family realized at a young age that I had talent. I began booking commercials and auditioned with local talent agencies. My mom noticed my potential and we moved to LA to pursue my career. It was all I ever wanted and I’m happy my family helped me make it happen. What's the most challenging role you've ever played? My role as Linda Moon in the movie Before. Honestly, it wasn’t so much challenging as it was being star struck! I couldn’t believe I had the opportunity to work with such big stars and be the center of a movie. It was more of an awakening that my dreams can come true in a big way How did you begin your career as a singer and songwriter? When I was a kid, I was in musical theater and I always dreamed of being a singer - I had dreams of being on stage. When I moved to Los Angeles, people would approach me all the time and ask me to sing for them, if I would be in a girl group, or if I was interested in a record deal. I spent a lot of time making Demos and singing on Demos for producers, and it eventually led me to making my own music. I started writing because none of the music that people were writing felt relatable to me. I wanted to write music that I related to from when I was in school, and about topics that I was dealing with and figured those my age were dealing with as well. When I signed with Def Jam, it was a dream come true because my whole book of CDs consisted mainly of Island Def Jam artists. I was their first pop artist, and I was so excited to be in that position doing what I love. What has been the most challenging and rewarding part of your career? The most rewarding part of my career has been being able to play lead roles and show young black Latina girls that they can do this, too. To show them that they can dream big and, if they work hard, they can make anything happen. The fact that I can inspire others by doing what I love is very rewarding to me. I was that little girl looking up to other people as well. The challenging part is now that I have a growing family, I approach things (traveling, being away etc.) differently, but I don’t mind the challenge. 20 SEPTEMBER 2020 | MODELISTE

MILIAN

As an entrepreneur with a successful Beignet, jewelry, and wine company, what advice can you give to someone who aspires to create a business of their own? Be prepared to dedicate your life to the business(es) you are passionate about. Nothing comes easy. It takes a lot of work, time, and patience. But once you begin to build momentum and see your business(es) start to flourish, there is no better feeling. Don’t ever be afraid to fail because your failures are lessons learned that make you better. There will be a lot of failure and it’s not personal – you just have to keep trying. You have used your platform to speak about the beauty of being a working mom. How do you find ways to balance time between work and family? My family is my priority, and right now, as challenging of a time as it is, I feel so grateful to be able to spend every moment with them. I make every moment worthwhile on my downtime, and as of these last few years, whenever I’m filming or I’m away working, my family comes out to visit me and spends time with me so I can feel that sense of normalcy and family around me.

You recently starred in your first romantic comedy on Netflix called, Falling Inn Love, how was working on a romantic comedy different from your previous roles? It was so much fun working on this film. I’m always grateful to be a part of projects that make the world feel good through entertainment. I’ve done other romantic comedies before like Love Don’t Cost a Thing and even Bring It On: Fight To The Finish has a sense of romantic comedy to it. I’d say working with the director, Roger Campbell, was my favorite part of this film because he wrote and directed Cruel Intentions. It was one of my favorite movies in the late 90s, and I always wanted to be in a movie like that. Now, this movie is nothing like that, but the director is pretty freaking cool! And being in New Zealand was such a great experience. Are there any other career paths you plan on exploring in the future? One day I would love to write a script and direct a movie. Fingers crossed. What would you like to be most remembered for? I would like to be remembered for being hard working, kind to everyone, a great mom and someone who used their platform for good. What inspires you? My children. Everything I do is for them. What is a rule of life you live by? Do good and good will come back to you.

Congratulations on your second child, Isaiah Pokora! How are you adjusting to life as a new mom during a pandemic? Thank you so much. As crazy as this time has been, it’s been a blessing in disguise for me to be able to fully be with my family and enjoy every moment with them. Both Matt and I keep saying how lucky we are - especially since the baby was born. We tend to have to run to work immediately, so it’s been nice to have a reason to not work and be focused on home life. You recently came out with a new show called, What Happens At Home by Kin, what can our readers expect to see? This has been such a fun project. During this difficult time when everyone is at home with more time on their hands, I wanted to be a part of the content that people utilize to keep themselves (and their kids) busy. You can expect a lot of silly, funny and crafty moments with my family. What is your morning and nighttime beauty routine? Honestly? I’m all over the place! I have all types of moisturizers that I try out depending on the weather and how my face feels. I think the most important thing is to drink water all day – it really makes a difference for your mind, body, soul and face! Favorite moment in your career? I've always loved my first lead role in Love Don't Cost a Thing as Paris Morgan. I think it inspired a lot of Afro-Latinas that we could make it in entertainment. Out of every character you've ever played, which one relates most to the person you are in real life? Linda Moon. She came from nothing and made something of her life by living out her dreams and performing. In what ways do you use your platform for the greater good? It’s important for me to use my platform to spread awareness about the charities and causes I’m passionate about, and to help fight racial injustices and support other women in a variety of ways. If you weren't famous what do you think you'd be up to right now? That’s a good question. Maybe something in sports if I had really focused on track and field. I think I would’ve been successful in that area because that was always an option for me growing up. When I got busy with acting and with music, I had to make a choice. What would you like to say to your fans? Thank you for the continuous love and support after all these years. My fans inspire me to keep going and to continue to push myself to the next level.

Modeliste Mode with Meaning salutes MREMBO AFRICA… Women working together, discovering their strength, empowered with training in skills to create and flourish as artisans, to produce, earn, and independently provide for themselves and their families. Inspired by vibrant African motifs, Mrembo Africa is creating new and exciting additions to the international world of fashion and decor giving a uniquely African voice and presence to enhance modern designs and current trends. MREMBO AFRICA translates from Swahili to ‘beautiful woman Africa’, a recognition of the inner and outer beauty of African women, of bonds between women across age, tribal, ethnic, religious and national identities, recognizing their common goals and needs, building success and economic independence. Through a program based in specific training to produce skilled artisans, the women of Mrembo Africa are finding strength through social and emotional support, building a sense of purpose, confidence, and hope for the future in the communities of poverty in Nairobi. Native born Kenyans and refugees from war-torn regions of East Africa, the women of Mrembo Africa strive together under difficult circumstances to believe in themselves and build new lives. This has been the vision of Mrembo Africa since its founding in Nairobi, Kenya in 2016 as a women-led social enterprise to empower women disadvantaged by poverty,

unemployment, lack of opportunity and skills. Partners and friends, Alice Eshuchi, Doreen Aura Munroe, and Lynne Chizzick envisioned a program of outreach that continues to grow, building a supportive community of women training in skills including sewing, tailoring, tie and dye, fashion and design, and the craft of jewelry making. On the job training, learning and earning, includes mentoring in sales and marketing, leadership and personal finance, aimed at encouraging independence and entrepreneurship. Mrembo Africa continues to inspire and expand its program of women empowerment with its model presenting women with a path for growth and leadership. Upon successfully mastering a skill and completing each part of the program, a woman becomes a teacher/ trainer supporting new members of our group. The lasting bonds these women form provide strength and resilience as they work to overcome backgrounds of poverty, extreme vulnerability and gender based violence, creating new pathways to economically sustain their families and provide for their children’s education within a shared sense of community.

Mrembo Africa has hosted student interns from American University in Washington, DC since our founding. This partnership program has been invaluable in providing positive interactions, opportunities for English language support, updates on technology, and a dynamic range of fashion suggestions and observations. Being a part of our women’s empowerment program deeply impacted these students, particularly the personal stories of the women, their dreams and aspirations for themselves and their children. Among our other partnerships, in 2018 Mrembo Africa was chosen to host 30 girls from the Dreams Project under Liverpool VCT Center for two months of training in tie and dye, crochet, jewelry making, and financial literacy. The success of this partnership and the personal growth evidenced in the women of the Dreams Project guided by Mrembo has gained recognition. Mrembo Africa is pursuing additional new and exciting partnerships including a line of children’s clothing coming soon.

OUR TEAM The workshop has up to 10 participants daily; these women arrive by 9.00 a.m with energy and enthusiasm to start their day's work. They all find the workshop becomes a safe haven because they have bonded as a family and a team. They prepare their lunch together as a social gesture and eat together, a time for laughter and jokes, connecting and relaxing. The welcome environment and the sense of community they cultivate is therapeutic, affirms their identity and relieves them from personal stress. Other women have the flexibility to work from home as they continue with their daily household activities and care for their children. A Kenyan mother-of-five describes how sewing has helped her family survive. Jerusa Angokho, from Western Kenya, was left to care for her five children by herself without a profession at the age of almost 40. She is now one of 10 women leaders on the Mrembo Africa team. Jerusa, now 52, says she is a different woman since she joined the Mrembo Team. "I have learned to communicate with clients while selling in different markets. At first, I was afraid to express myself, but now I know I can create, sew, and then sell what I produce.

What does the word empowerment mean to you?

"To me, empowerment is about recognizing someone’s strengths and giving them the confidence and courage to express this. For those who have already found their strength, it’s giving them the support and positivity to continue on their journey. Empowering other women has always come natural to me. I grew up in a family with two sisters and have an all female team, I am constantly surrounded by other women and try to empower and encourage them the best I can.

20 Questions with Natasha Oakley Hello gorgeous, Tell us a little bit about yourself. Hi!! I’m Natasha Oakley, or as many people know me today Tash Oakley. I’m the CEO/ Co-Founder of Monday Swimwear, Natasha Oakley Blog, and social media influencer. I grew up in Sydney, Australia but now spend my time between Los Angeles and Sydney. Growing up in a beach town, I’ve always been passionate about nature, health, and wellness. Growing up my mum described me as having a vivid imagination and love for the arts and fashion. I took on modeling at a young age and became extremely passionate about it. In my early twenties I moved to Maui where I met my now-business partner and best friend, Devin Brugman. We started a production company and then launched our blog, which grew quickly in popularity, A Bikini A Day. From the beginning, we were always inspired to spread a message of confidence and having a positive body image. Naturally, the next step was to launch Monday Swimwear, our first baby! Today, we feel so blessed to work with such an amazing and talented team, travel the world, and set a positive footprint in the swimwear industry. How would you define yourself in three words? Passionate, driven and positive. In what ways have you been incorporating self - care into your daily routine? Setting concrete time for self love and care is so important for me in my regular life, and now more than ever. I do this by taking a warm bath with candles and a glass of red wine, playing tennis which I’ve recently taken on as a hobby, and doing pilates via The Pilates Class, daily. I put a lot of my energy towards my businesses, my team, and those around me that carving time out for myself is essential in keeping me grounded. What's the most fulfilling part of your job? The most fulfilling part of my job is definitely inspiring women and spreading a positive message of body confidence. I put so much love and energy into my business which I’ve used as a platform to spread this message and knowing I am positively impacting women drives my passion and never makes it feel like “work”.

84 SEPTEMBER 2020 | MODELISTE

Can you tell us about an exciting time in your career? Launching Monday Swimwear was definitely one of the most fulfilling and exciting moments of my career. Devin, my business partner, and I, put so much work and energy into the collection and perfecting every aspect of the brand so watching it come to life was a really special moment. What would you title this current chapter in your life? It’s interesting you ask because I just turned 30, and have had some time to reflect on my life so far and all my accomplishments. I have exciting plans for the future but having set the groundwork for my business definitely puts me in a different place. I’m very into numerology, and astrology and the numerology meaning behind “30” is about setting you life path and destiny. I think I would name this chapter in my life ’30’ indicative of my journey so far, and path yet to come. How do you educate yourself on ways of maintaining healthy skin? I’ve always truly believed that healthy skin is reflective of a healthy lifestyle. I try to stay hydrated during the day and drink tons of water, especially when I travel, eat a healthy and well-balanced diet, and get eight hours of rest each night. As crazy as it sounds, I also get a lot of a skincare recommendations and insight from my Instagram, and my social circle. Skin is a hot subject these days and is always brought up at dinner tables or in discussions in some form. I’m always interested in everyone’s skin journey and then look into it afterwards. What do you love most about Pixi Beauty? I love that Pixi Beauty is a natural product range! What are your top 3 favorite Pixi Beauty products? I love their eye effects shadow palette, brightening oil, and lip brighteners What does the word empowerment mean to you? To me, empowerment is about recognizing someone’s strengths and giving them the confidence and courage to express this. For those who have already found their strength, it’s giving them the support and positivity to continue on their journey. Empowering other women has always come natural to me. I grew up in a family with two sisters and have an all female team, I am constantly surrounded by other women and try to empower and encourage them the best I can.

In what ways do you use your platform for the greater good? I started my platform on the basis of body positivity and confidence. I still like to use my platform today to promote this message through working with a diverse group of women, and trying to make Monday Swimwear as inclusive as possible. I also try to utilize my social media to promote causes I support and believe in like climate change, human and women's and right and more. During these tough times, what has kept you motivated? Having a daily routine and structure that helped immensely during this time. At the beginning of the Pandemic, I accepted the fact that things are going to change, and tried to re-structure my brands to be proactive to this change. This has helped keep me motivated and my goals in line with everything going on. How do you remain fit, active, and healthy with stay-at-home orders intact? I started working out via The Pilates Class, and absolutely love it. After yoga and pilates studios started shutting down due to COVID, my favorite pilates instructor, Jacqui Kingswell, launched The Pilates Class. I was so happy to learn that her pilates classes will still be available to me, and I actually prefer the luxury of doing her classes from home. As a creative in quarantine, how have you found inspiration and ways to create? My inspiration has definitely come in different ways like movies, books, and TV. I try to stay pretty balanced and healthy so I’m able to draw inspiration in the new forms it comes in these days. What and/or who has had the most influence on your growth and why? I’ve always been very self-motivated and driven but my mum definitely instilled a really great work ethic and drive in me from a young age. She’s a very successful realtor in Sydney, whom is extremely polished and well spoken. Having her as a role model growing up paved the way for my growth and aspirations. How can you as an individual actively take part in fighting a system of oppression and standing in solidarity with your peers of color to amplify their voices? I’ve definitely been educating myself not only on racism but anti-racism through my own research, readings, and discussions with my friends and peers. As someone who has a strong voice and platform, I’ve made a strong and concerted effort to continue showcasing and working all the beautiful women of color in my industry. I’ve also made countless donations through Monday Swimwear and my own personal efforts. I understand that this is an on-going fight and I’m happy to stand in solidarity with my peers.

How have you found ways to educate yourself and those around you? I have taken time personally to digest all of the important information that my friends, family and others from all around the world have shared to better educate myself on what is such an important matter. You can never know enough about any one humanitarian issue or issue of inequality and I am always open to learning more, and to sharing more with those close to me, including my followers. What do you think are ways that others can help society and our surrounding communities? Firstly, the power of educating yourself is so strong. Being educated on policies and laws in your community and voting is definitely a great start. I’ve always been passionate about animals and try to be as “green” as possible by recycling, cutting meat out of my diet, and feel very strongly against wasting food. I believe if everyone played their part, even a small part, in keeping our world clean, we would achieve great success. Find what you are passionate about, and start small by incorporating a few helpful habits into your life. In what ways has your life changed due to current events? The COVID19 Pandemic, and the BLM Movement both made me hyper aware of the power of my influence and my responsibility to my followers and society. It reminded me to continue educating myself as an ongoing practice and implement stronger checks and balances for every part of my business (Monday Swimwear and my personal Natasha Oakley platform). A lot of my followers have watched my journey of inclusivity from the beginning of launching Monday Swimwear and even A Bikini A Day. As my business and my platform grows, I plan to continue incorporating these core values into my business model and personal life. What advice do you have for someone who aspires to create a career like your own? Be passionate about what you do, success isn’t built overnight, you have to live and breathe your idea. Educate yourself on the market you wish to enter and the industry, through research and education you can find a gap in the market that you can fill or something you're passionate about. Be open minded, business models can change, and you can try a few different things out until you find something that sticks. Don’t be afraid to try, you’ll never know your potential until you do! Have fun along the way. Devin, my business partners and best friend, and I make this a really important part of our life and work rarely feels like a job!

What does the word empowerment mean to you?

"Empowerment means everything to me. Being empowered by fellow women in the entertainment industry is everything to me. That’s why I support them and am constantly a cheerleader cheering them on. I wouldn’t be who I am today without my YouTube friends keeping me inspired with their content and talking about creativity blocks behind the scenes. YouTube is a very emotionally draining job and I couldn’t do it without the women empowering me."

In what ways do you use your platform for the greater good? One brand I’m proud of is my #GirlsSupportingGirls brand where we donate a portion of each sale to a girl’s non-profit organization. We’ve donated to charities such as ovarian cancer, breast cancer, sick kids’ hospital, black lives matter, planned parenthood, Australian fires and so much more. Girls supporting girls is so much more than a saying to me, it’s a movement of empowering women wanting a change! While getting a cute hoodie too ;) During these tough times, what has kept you motivated? Through these tough times, my morning and night routine have kept me motivated. Waking up, having meal prepped breakfast, drinking my matcha, working out and starting my vlog or whatever work I have to do has kept me sane during these crazy times. Without routine, I feel like the days all smush together and there’s no meaning to life. Having those extra hours to myself and focusing on myself has helped so much. How do you remain fit, active, and healthy with stay-at-home orders intact? My favourite people on YouTube have been Chloe Ting and Alexis Ren! They have been my entire search history for the past couple of months haha! I’m currently doing the 24-day hourglass challenge by Chloe Ting and I’ve noticed some great results! I think facetiming a friend and doing the workouts together has helped me stay accountable. Yelling at my friend or my friend yelling at me when we’re lazy has been good motivation for those days you don’t feel like doing anything! As a creative in quarantine, how have you found inspiration and ways to create? When one door closes, another one opens. I’ve been creating a lot of “stay at home” content for everyone in quarantine recently. I used to look at quarantine in a negative light, but I think grabbing life by the reins and taking advantage of any situation you’re thrown in is how you stay on top of your game! What and/or who has had the most influence on your growth and why? My life coach has influenced my growth a lot this past year. I’ve been talking to her about my work and personal struggles and she’s always there to let me know my feelings are valid and guide me through any situation. I always recommend my followers to seek help, whether it be a therapist, life coach, friend or family member. You’re not annoying anyone with your problems, your problems and feelings are valid and demand to be felt! You got this!

How can you as an individual actively take part in fighting a system of oppression and standing in solidarity with your peers of color to amplify their voices? I want to use my platform and be an example of how we can be better and do our part to work towards equality. I’ve always been vocal about signing petitions, donating money, going to protests and doing whatever we can to support the #BlackLivesMatter movement. And just because it isn’t trending as much as it was a month ago, doesn’t mean it matters any less. Black lives matter today, tomorrow and every day. How have you found ways to educate yourself and those around you? Social media and Netflix documentaries have helped me educate myself. I recommend everyone to watch “13th” on Netflix and “The hate you give.” They are my favourite films that creatively dive into racism, past and present. What do you think are ways that others can help society and our surrounding communities? Ways that you can help are voting, signing petitions online, going to protests, donating money, educating yourself and educating others on black history. In what ways has your life changed due to current events? I’ve become more educated on black history and always recommend my followers to support local black businesses, black influencers and donate to black charities. Systemic racism is a form of racism that is embedded as normal practice within society, which causes people to have a disadvantage of getting a job, mortgage, house, education, etc. because of the colour of their skin. Lift and rise each other and treat others the way you’d like to be treated. What advice do you have for someone who aspires to create a career like your own? My #1 piece of advice is to take time for yourself and figure out EXACTLY what fuels the fire in your heart, what makes your heart race when thinking about it, what gives you passion. Whatever that is, put your heart and soul into it. It may not pay at first (YouTube didn’t pay me a penny when I first started about 10 years ago), but so many people lack passion in what they do. Having passion will set you apart from everyone else and you are guaranteed success. Good luck!

20 Questions with Asia Monet Ray Hello gorgeous, Tell us a little bit about yourself. My Name is Asia Monet, I'm a Singer/ Artist, Actress , Model and Dancer! Born and raised in OC/LA, daughter of Hall of Fame Bodybuilder Shawn Ray. My life has definitely been a whirlwind of so many blessings but a lot of hard work! I'm so very dedicated to my craft and always see room for improvement for myself and others. I have a passion for inspiring others and finding anyway I can to help and set positive examples for my generation and the next to come. I love animals more than anything and hope to one day have a rescue farm of my own! Overall success takes time and I'm always ready for the challenges, trials and tests to come through my journey God has for me. How would you define yourself in three words? The best 3 words that define me are Loving, Passionate, and Driven. In what ways have you been incorporating self - care into your daily routine? Self-care is very important to me and I try to incorporate it into my daily routine by working out everyday, making time for skincare and face masks, writing and listening to music, spending time with animals (including my 3 birds and dog), fitting in facetimes with my closest friends and keeping a clear mindset by journaling with a candle always near by. What's the most fulfilling part of your job? I would most definitely say, being able to inspire others through my work, while doing the things I love the most. But I can always remember the feeling when I got the call from my manager, that I was cast as Sydney Simpson in American Crime Story, OJ vs. The People. I was so excited and couldn’t believe I’d be working with Director Ryan Murphy and this A-list cast. It was one of my 2nd acting role and it was a really great and super busy time in my career. Then, not too long after that I was fortunate enough to get a call to sing at 11yrs. 108 SEPTEMBER 2020 | MODELISTE

Old at a sold out staples center crowd for the LA Clippers. That was definitely a night to remember. To look up at that whole stadium and see that many people, it was so Amazing! I really felt that this is exactly what I was meant to do. Last, another exciting time in my Career was Performing alongside Mariah Carey for a Month in New York during the Holidays at a sold out Beacon Theater. I was cast to dance for her, but then was also asked to sing 2 solos during the shows as well, which I still can’t believe to this day how amazing that time was. It was such an incredible experience to perform Live. What would you title this current chapter in your life? This chapter in life would be called "Growth and Self-Love" How do you educate yourself on ways of maintaining healthy skin? Coming from someone who grew up with a Mother who was an paramedical esthetician, who instilled proper ways of cleansing , toning and moisturizing by the age of 5. I'd definitely say she was the most influential when it came to skincare awareness. Now that I'm older I'm obsessed with product knowledge, scientific research, origin of the brand and high grade ingredients. I'm still learning so much when it comes to product knowledge and ingredients but, I always make sure to do my research, ALWAYS read the reviews and try them out myself to share my thoughts with my audience . What do you love most about Pixi Beauty? There's so many things that I love about Pixi Beauty, first of all it would be their Founder/ Owner Petra. She has created a brand from the ground up after being a makeup artist for many years, I admire that she has created a brand that is constantly reminding people of their natural beauty and conveying that through her products for the past 20+ years. Fun Fact: Pixi was one of the first makeup brands I started using and truly made me fall in love with enhancing natural beauty. What are your top 3 favorite Pixi Beauty products? In what ways do you use your platform for the greater good? I'm grateful to have a large platform to be a positive role model and able to share my craft, encouragement, current affairs/event, causes that are important to me, people who inspire me and be a voice of influence During these tough times, what has kept you motivated? The last several months have been tough on just about everyone I’m sure. Me, going from having a busy schedule to literally a dead stop a couple months ago, to now trying to do a little more stuff out of the house, but still social distancing and wearing my mask, I would say what keeps me motivated is my passion for my music and just taking this time to grow in my craft as a artist, and be able to have time to write and post more music covers. I think that has really helped me stay connected and stay motivated. How do you remain fit, active, and healthy with stay-at-home orders intact? Coming from a family full of athletes who are in the fitness industry and having dancer background and being an ex my gymnast myself, I've always loved working out and finding to ways to improvise when it comes to self quarantine. During quarantine i have incorporated finding new ways of cardio as in hiking and enjoying some air, while going hardcore on the abs at home!! As a creative in quarantine, how have you found inspiration and ways to create? I've actually been more creative during this time than before by, finding alternative ways of inspiration through music, books, writing, using social media for fashion and beauty and educating myself on current affairs. What and/or who has had the most influence on your growth and why? I'd say my mom because she always supported, encouraged, sacrificed and pushed me to do the times I was good at and to constantly continue working hard on my craft. There's so many things that I can say about her and the things she's done for me but , most importantly, has always used words and knowledge to encourage me to continue what I do. How can you as an individual actively take part in fighting a system of oppression and standing in solidarity with your peers of color to amplify their voices? There is so much to say as we still continue to this day a non-stop fight against a system of oppression. I will continue to stand in solidarity with my Black Community. I will always make sure I am doing what I can as an individual and make it a point to use my platform to reach out and continue to

amplify our voices against racism and hold those accountable. We must as individuals be active big or small to support our Black owned business, donate what we can to our Black community and foundations in need and keep our foot on the gas ... and keep fighting , educating yourself and uplifting our sisters and brothers!!! Fighting for a change, fighting for reforms , fighting for Justice. Fighting for our cilvil rights, Dignity and Liberation for ALL BLACK LIFES!!! How have you found ways to educate yourself and those around you? At the age of 15, I am still educating myself, reading Books, watching suggested Movies and making time to join Live streams on current affairs, conversations with top speakers of my Black community. I’m learning more about Black History than I ever have before in my life, so I can be more educated. I'm too young to vote, but when the time comes in 3 years when I am 18, I will definitely be prepared. Education is everything!! What do you think are ways that others can help society and our surrounding communities? There are endless ways to help society and the world. Here are a few things: Be a Voice for what is right, hold people accountable, educate yourself, Vote if you are eligible and 18. If you have a social platform, use it!! Follow Black Community Educators. Get involved big or small. Donate to a foundation in need. Fight Racism on all levels!!! In what ways has your life changed due to current events? At 15 years old I feel like I have mentally prepared myself that the fight has just begun and we need to continue to apply pressure and fight for the change we need to see! I continue to learn and educate myself with my peers, and be a voice as much as I can. But I do feel Life has changed for all of us and we need to do better as a society. Love Wins. What advice do you have for someone who aspires to create a career like your own? My advice would truly be "If it was easy, everyone would be doing it", everything takes hard work no matter how long it takes, to never give up, to never let people steer you away from what you are passionate about and what you love. Remember we are all unique individuals with different callings and must always support others and their dreams. No dream is too big, so never settle for less.

What does the word empowerment mean to you? Having the confidence to take control of your life and go after your dreams.

In what ways do you use your platform for the greater good? I hope that by sharing my own personal experience I can inspire others to have the confidence to go after their own dreams. I feel the greater good is caused by people following what they’re passionate and meant to do. During these tough times, what has kept you motivated? I always have a vision board at my desk. How do you remain fit, active, and healthy with stay-at-home orders intact? I created an area in my apartment specifically for working out, it helps separate my space. I always follow a workout on an app led by an instructor, I find it so difficult to stay motivated doing my own routine. As a creative in quarantine, how have you found inspiration and ways to create? I try to be creative when I’m in the moment and figure out new ways to capture what I’m already doing in my day to day life. What and/or who has had the most influence on your growth and why? I think it’s important to educate yourself on the history of racism as well as the present injustices.

What do you think are ways that others can help society and our surrounding communities? By taking collective action. Some ways to do this are by amplifying voices on social media, making donations, or signing petitions. In what ways has your life changed due to current events? It’s really opened by eyes to how much work we still have to do to evolve as a society. It’s also taught me the importance of taking a stance and using my platform for causes bigger than myself. What advice do you have for someone who aspires to create a career like your own? Be confident. So many obstacles will come your way and constantly make you doubt yourself but the only way to keep going is to work on your confidence and truly believe in yourself.

20 Questions with Danielle Bradbery How would you define yourself in three words? Visionary, prolific, and honest In what ways have you been incorporating self - care into your daily routine? I’ve been eating better (or at least trying to, haha). I always make sure to make time for working out and stretching! It’s important to me to have that time to for myself, where I can truly be in the moment and not thing about anything else. For me, working out is a great de-stresser and is important to my mental well-being. What's the most fulfilling part of your job? Other than meeting my incredible fans that keep me going, I think a huge fulfilling part is getting to create a song or group of songs that just come straight from the heart. It is the most exciting adrenaline rush! Can you tell us about an exciting time in your career? I’ve been blessed with many!!! There have been opportunities where I’ve gotten to sing on stage with some amazing artist like Nick Jonas, Lee Ann Womack, Andra Day, and Common. If I could list everything I would! What would you title this current chapter in your life? Evolving. As we all go through life’s hiccups right now, plus trying to be creative in my career, I feel like I’m learning so much more about myself, my music, and everything around me. How do you educate yourself on ways of maintaining healthy skin? I love watching routines that some celebrities put up to see how they take care of their skin or I just research the best I can. I’m a dry skin gal so the moisturizer is my best friend!!!. What does the word empowerment mean to you? It motivates me. That word is what I try to run towards when it comes to myself and my career. I want to inspire others and I want to represent myself as a strong symbol that young women especially can relate to.

In what ways do you use your platform for the greater good? I try to give off as much as I can in the best way I can! Whether that be me talking to you right now or posting on Instagram. I’m all about honesty, faithfulness, positivity, and strength!! And also of course being that way even off platforms like meeting you in person, I’m going to spread that good energy in hopes to impact others. I strive to be the same person I am online as I am offline – what you see is truly, authentically me. During these tough times, what has kept you motivated? Trying to take care of myself. When I’m constantly going and going, I might not have time for some of those important selfcare things. Trying to stay active, eating healthier, and setting goals for myself have kept me sane and able to stay creative! How do you remain fit, active, and healthy with stay-at-home orders intact? Honestly, there’ a lot you can do in the comforts of your own home… At-home workouts, stretching/yoga, and you can make your healthy snacks/meals all at home. If you’re not huge into cooking like me, this is also a great time to experiment and get better! Before all this, I was travelling non-stop and never really had a chance to build a routine at home, so these months have been really fun for me to learn and try new things.

What do you think are ways that others can help society and our surrounding communities? Getting involved in causes that you care about, and using your voice in a positive way. In what ways has your life changed due to current events? It’s changed a lot. As a performer and a type of influencer, I feel like we’re having to come up with different ways to do what we normally do and use platforms like Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, or any video/ chat to stay connected!! We’re having to learn a whole new way of communicating the best we can! It’s been fun navigating through this time to say the least. What advice do you have for someone who aspires to create a career like your own? I say to be yourself to the fullest. If you’re shy, that doesn’t stop you and I’m proof of it. I was probably one of the shyest you’d ever meet. I could barely sing in front of people, and an interview??! Never! But I pulled the band aid off and just did it. That saying you hear about getting out of your comfort zone? Well that’s a real thing! You can do it!! Stay true to you. Don’t let people steer you in a direction that’s not you, and have so much fun doing it!

As a creative in quarantine, how have you found inspiration and ways to create? I will say, it’s not easy. There’s a lot of days where I feel a lack of energy and not so motivated, but using this time to also create in silence, is exciting. It’s almost like everything is going to be a surprise! What and/or who has had the most influence on your growth and why? Honestly, opportunities that haven’t worked out through my journey -- I’m talking about both things and people. That has been such a huge influence on my growth I think a lot more than I realized or thought it would be. It makes me have the mindset to be better and show I can do it no matter what comes in my way....I’m going to do it or achieve it. How have you found ways to educate yourself and those around you? I feel like there’s no right or wrong way to do it. Research and just having an open ear rather than just talking without listening. I’m a huge listener and observer and I feel like that’s how I educate myself the best.

MODELISTE | SEPTEMBER 2020 125

20 Questions with Danielle Lombard Hello gorgeous, Tell us a little bit about yourself. Hello Modeliste Family! My name’s Danielle and I am a Small Business Entrepreneur with a background in Cosmetology and Psychology & Social Behavior! Quite the combo, but my passions include traveling, dining out, beauty and recreating some of my favorite dishes at home! How would you define yourself in three words? Loyal, Optimistic and Compassionate In what ways have you been incorporating self - care into your daily routine? I’ve definitely had days where I feel down and need to recharge, but I try not to be stagnant throughout the day. If I’m doing a lot of work on the computer I make sure to step outside and take my dog, Mila for a walk and I love winding down at night with a nice bath. What's the most fulfilling part of your job? I’ve found it the most fulfilling lately to be able to use my platform on Social Media to amplify voices and share methods of action for change. Whether it's in taking better care of ourselves, serving our community better, fighting for equal rights or promoting products and brands that are more sustainable and eco friendly. I’ve found purpose and passion by working to better myself, while sharing those tools so followers can see simple ways to improve their life and the lives of others. Can you tell us about an exciting time in your career? One of my most exciting moments was shortly after I became a partner in my first nail salon at 22. Through our loyal, growing clientele and raving reviews a commercial real estate group in LA approached us to create a concept for their shopping center. It was the first project I worked on where I had full creative control over the concept, design and development. It was such an incredible process and I had also been working on opening an ice cream store in Northern California. It was a very trying time for me, but knowing that I had the capability to manage two projects in separate industries gave me the confidence that I could do anything I set my mind to! 126 SEPTEMBER 2020 | MODELISTE

How do you educate yourself on ways of maintaining healthy skin? Growing up, my mom always instilled the importance of healthy skin. She gave my sister and I an Epicuren 3 Step Kit when I was in my early teens and I learned the importance of cleanse, tone and hydrate! From there it sparked my curiosity of the beauty industry and after getting my Cosmetology License and working in a beauty supply store I gained more access to different products and brands. Now, I love to see what my favorite celebs, makeup artists and dermatologists are using and seeing what works best for my skin. Everyone’s different ingredients are always changing so it keeps things fun and exciting. What do you love most about Pixi Beauty? I love that Pixi Beauty is a cruelty free brand and that their prices are so affordable! What are your top 3 favorite Pixi Beauty products? DetoxifEYE Hydrogels Mask, Lip Icing in Toffee and their Glow Mud Mask (which I actually have on right now!) All of these are Vegan too! What does the word empowerment mean to you? Empowerment to me is when you as an individual take control over what you do have power over. You are able to bring to fruition the things you most desire in life without having to rely on anyone else. In what ways do you use your platform for the greater good? I use my platform to create a community where other women feel safe, heard and empowered. While also using it to bring awareness to causes and movements that are important to me. During these tough times, what has kept you motivated? During these times, it's been a period of self reflection. Scaling back and slowing down has allowed me to prioritize my passions and channel my energy into my new product line which has been incredibly exciting and motivating for me. How do you remain fit, active, and healthy with stay-at-home orders intact? I’m definitely guilty of carb overload especially while cooking so much at home because in my opinion, if it’s made from scratch it’s healthy But seeing all my friends and fellow influencers working out definitely keeps me motivated! I’ve

been loving Chloe Ting’s at home workout routines because they are goal oriented and each program targets different areas of your body. I’ve also done several challenges on the Nike Run Club with my friends that keeps me motivated to get outside and exercise, because getting a daily dose of vitamin D and fresh air is very necessary! As a creative in quarantine, how have you found inspiration and ways to create? Honestly, I took a little break but TikTok was incredibly inspiring to me! Lots of influencers were posting tutorials and how to’s and I think I’m a very visual person so seeing the explanation and process behind the finished photo or video gave me a lot of inspiration and insight. Just gotta be sure you don’t go down a black hole and spend hours on the platform…it can be addicting! What and/or who has had the most influence on your growth and why? For me, it’s been my friends who are in the same industry. Most of us are all multifaceted and their dedication to their craft and hustle definitely motivates me to do more. This is an incredibly competitive space where the market has become over saturated so it’s important to stay on top of content to stabilize your career. How can you as an individual actively take part in fighting a system of oppression and standing in solidarity with your peers of color to amplify their voices? Thankfully I have a platform where I have access to resources that not only promote the fight against oppression, but provide ways to take action. I’ve been protesting, having conversations with people on and off-line, educating family members and even taking note myself of the privileges that I’ve been unknowingly given due to the color of my skin. Even before this movement I have been aware of the racial injustices and ways in which we may be contributing to the systemic injustices. Whenever I hear someone say or do something that is harmful to the Black community, I’ve always been very vocal about how those thoughts and actions have negative repercussions. How have you found ways to educate yourself and those around you? I’m always someone who’s been very diligent and proactive when it comes to educating myself. We are constantly learning, growing and evolving and it’s important to recognize that there is always room for growth. Throughout this movement I have come to acknowledge and accept my privileges and to educate myself by having open conversations with people so that I can improve. Media can skew things in an attempt to distract and avert our attention away from the root issue, but if you educate yourself through valid

sources then you can clearly see what has been occurring in our country for centuries and how to move forward towards a path of equality. What do you think are ways that others can help society and our surrounding communities? Be more involved, continue to share and consume information to educate ourselves. Pay attention to what’s happening in your city by staying on top of local government officials and policies. Go to a protest, attend a sit - in, have open conversations with your family and friends. Use your platform to share information and call for specific actions that will lead to resolutions. In what ways has your life changed due to current events? I’ve definitely been able to redirect my energy and focus into things that really matter for me. Not having to worry about driving around LA all the time and spending a majority of time home, I’ve been able to launch my website, create a YouTube channel and work on my product line. This is also the most consistent I’ve worked out in a long time since I’m not traveling. I also believe that I have grown exponentially as a person and have been able to focus on the people and things that I value most. What advice do you have for someone who aspires to create a career like your own? Put in the work. Success never comes overnight, and I think for me…there’s always room to grow. If you’re interested in a certain industry, you may have to put in lots of hours where you’re not getting anything in return other than experience. Build connections, network, put yourself out there and focus on the things that you’re passionate about and how ways to differentiate yourself or your business from others.

MODELISTE | SEPTEMBER 2020 131

20 Questions with Elle Ferguson Hello gorgeous, Tell us a little bit about yourself. Where do I begin…? In short I am the Founder and Creative Director of ELLE EFFECT - an Australia cult beauty brand that specializes in sunless tanning essentials. I am also a digital influencer and entrepreneur. How would you define yourself in three words? Kind, loyal and fearless In what ways have you been incorporating self - care into your daily routine? When I created ELLE EFFECT, it started with self-care. For me self-care is so important to make you feel good and shine from the inside out. I always ensure I have a golden glow (I apply the ELLE EFFECT self tan every three days to my face and once a week to my whole body). I start my day with a one hour session of pilates, which really allows me to connect with my body; and from there, self-care includes good hair; a healthy gut and a positive mind set. What's the most fulfilling part of your job? It’s the fact that I have created something that makes people happy and that I’m proud of a product I have made and a brand that is part of me. I also love profiling & celebrating amazingly talented strong women as “Boss Babes” on my website, www.elleeffect.com Can you tell us about an exciting time in your career? To be honest with you, there have been so many milestones in my career that have been real pinch me moments, however if I had to choose one, an exciting time in my career would be my first ever Cosmopolitan Australian Cover. I had modeled throughout my late teens and early 20’s and had never landed that cover and it was something I had always strived to achieve. It wasn’t until I launched my own company and became a real ‘girl boss’ that I got that cover. I earned that cover for many hard years of work and becoming someone people could look up to. I was so incredibly proud- that the cover wasn’t just about beauty, but also brains! What would you title this current chapter in your life? It's funny you say that as I always describe life as a book and we can always start a new chapter when we need to. This chapter would be called ‘learnings’. 132 SEPTEMBER 2020 | MODELISTE

How do you educate yourself on ways of maintaining healthy skin? I am addicted to reading articles online about how to achieve healthy skin and then I’m also very lucky to be surrounded by some extremely talented people that know the secrets to great skin. Also it's always about trial and error and I work with some of the best makeup artists and brands that I am constantly exposed to new products in the ever evolving world of beauty. What do you love most about Pixi Beauty? I love that their products are fuss-free and so easy to use. What are your top 3 favorite Pixi Beauty products? The NaturelleLip Lipsticks are amazing and keep your lips super hydrated. I’m a HUGE fan of blush so the on-the-glow multi use Moisture stick is my fav for blush I always wear a nude liner on my water line in my eyes, so the Silky Eye Pen in MatteNude is a MUST! What does the word empowerment mean to you? It means being fearless and not being afraid. Believing in yourself.

set those goals and worked out a plan to achieve them. I also signed up to a clean eating program that delivers fresh food weekly so I just follow the recipe cards. I have really used this time to stop and take a moment to reset. As a creative in quarantine, how have you found inspiration and ways to create? I have loved the challenges and really strived on being inspired by my surroundings and limitations. I have become so much more inventive and creative! I also allowed myself the time to be more creative and be still; before isolation was there was never enough time in the day… Now I’ve had the time to take a breath and discover new creativity. What and/or who has had the most influence on your growth and why? My mum always… She is my biggest inspiration and someone I continually want to make proud. How can you as an individual actively take part in fighting a system of oppression and standing in solidarity with your peers of color to amplify their voices? I am educating myself. I am using my time to educate and make changes.

In what ways do you use your platform for the greater good? I feel very strongly about supporting small businesses and I have always used my platform to promote and support them. I have had countless businesses contact me about how my support has created success for them or changed their business. I also believe in using my platform to support charities and organizations I believe in to promote.

How have you found ways to educate yourself and those around you? Knowledge is power and also by asking questions. All questions, even the uncomfortable ones, are so important, particularly now.

During these tough times, what has kept you motivated? The people I love and my community keep me motivated. And then working out. For the past three and a half months I have been working out twice a day six days a week. I set myself goals and I am staying motivated by achieving them and constantly setting new goals. I feel motivated when I am working towards achieving a goal. By doing this I am inspiring others to do the same.

In what ways has your life changed due to current events? Like everyone in the world, my life has changed. I feel like life has some-what slowed down. I’m also doing everything from home and not traveling overseas at all.

How do you remain fit, active, and healthy with stay-at-home orders intact? In week two of isolation, I purchased a treadmill and installed it on my balcony. I also invested in daily pilates classes at the same time every day with a pilates instructor via Zoom. This gave me a routine to follow and kept me accountable to show up. Once I had the routine, I started to

What do you think are ways that others can help society and our surrounding communities? We need to listen and learn. And continue to educate.

What advice do you have for someone who aspires to create a career like your own? I often say this when I’m asked this question, just do it!!! Go for it! The time is now, don’t wait!!! If there’s anything that we can learn from this situation the world is in right now, it’s that life is short and things can change in an instant – don’t wait, just go for it.

I'm a Sydney based lifestyle influencer, i love to travel and i also own a social media marketing agency. How would you define yourself in three words? Free spirited, Passionate, and Compassionate In what ways have you been incorporating self - care into your daily routine? Self care to me, means so many things. Taking care of my skin, doing a face mask, working out, meditation. Making time for things daily that put you first is so important. What's the most fulfilling part of your job? Truely, last year when I was traveling the world and experiencing cultures from around the world and sharing that on social and seeing how much joy and wonder it brought my followers and awareness it brought to places not widely traveled. Can you tell us about an exciting time in your career? I was in a really cool documentary about social media that's definitely one and a super cool experience. And I think all of the travel I've been blessed to do for work. I've been lucky enough to visit places I never dreamed I would see. What would you title this current chapter in your life? Reflection and growth. I think with the world slowing down and being unable to have the freedom i once had, it's made me really find time to look inside and make time for the goals i never made time for previously. How do you educate yourself on ways of maintaining healthy skin? I have a great beauty therapist, and an amazing skin care brand i adore. I thank them. What do you love most about Pixi Beauty? What does the word empowerment mean to you? Its a whole bunch of feelings. Being in control of my own destiny and always working hard for everything i've achieved, but in a graceful manner with integrity and honesty, whilst feeling strong and confident, is what empowerment means to me.

In what ways do you use your platform for the greater good? I always try and spread awareness about world issues and issues that I feel strongly about, and have a voice even in controversial times. Having a big platform and audience is great, but you have to use it for more than your own good and to spread awareness for those that cant at times. During these tough times, what has kept you motivated? I think knowing that there is always a light at the end of the tunnel and trying to just be present and use this time for some self growth. I always try and be postive in any saddening situation. I'm healthy and safe which i need to be grateful for always. How do you remain fit, active, and healthy with stay-at-home orders intact? Luckily having access to a lot of wonderful fitness apps, walks and facetime work out with friends to stay connected, has been super helpful. As a creative in quarantine, how have you found inspiration and ways to create? It actually made me think out of the square. A lot of my creativity comes when I travel, so I really had to get back to basics and details and it's actually been super fun. What and/or who has had the most influence on your growth and why? I take so much inspiration from others and myself. Anything I've ever really wanted to do I've managed to do and I think that comes from my Mum and all her faith in me. How can you as an individual actively take part in fighting a system of oppression and standing in solidarity with your peers of color to amplify their voices? I think having a voice, empathy and compassion is so important on social platforms. Having lived in LA for years, I felt truly saddened by the riots to the point where I helped spread awareness for what was going on across my platforms, stood in silence for weeks and actively promoted and bought from black owned businesses, and did not support companies known to uphold racist standards.

How have you found ways to educate yourself and those around you? I read a lot. A Lot of blogs, listen to alot of podcasts, educate myself as much as I can from across the world by listening to people I respect, and making my own decisions based on my own research. What do you think are ways that others can help society and our surrounding communities? Spreading awareness, having a voice and actively taking actions to support and help people in communities that truly need it. In what ways has your life changed due to current events? Well last year i spent half my year travelling for work, this year i caught one international flight before the pandemic hit. My whole job and a lot of my life has changed. I'm just hoping for the best for next year and staying as positive as I can. It's tough not being able to see my family, but I take comfort in knowing we are in this together. What advice do you have for someone who aspires to create a career like your own? Don't think just do it. Don't question yourself. Trust yourself, make a plan and then execute it step by step. Draw inspiration from others and have fun in the process. Dress by BEC AND BRIDGE

What does the word empowerment mean to you?

"I think the root of empowerment is liking and accepting, all of yourself. From there, you can feel confident about who you are and what you bring to the table. Taking it a step further, you learn how to advocate for yourself and make better choices. Once you master that, you can extend that to advocating for others within your personal and professional community and the world at large. That’s what empowerment means to me…so far. 20 Questions with Hassie Harrison Hello gorgeous, Tell us a little bit about yourself. Hi! My name is Hassie Harrison. (Yes, that’s my real name.) I’m an actress that grew up in Texas and live in Los Angeles now. I’m obsessed with dogs and am currently in a deep and meaningful love affair with my morning coffee and consider myself to be a cereal enthusiast. How would you define yourself in three words? Passionate. Artistic. Loyal. In what ways have you been incorporating self - care into your daily routine? I take a lot of walks to exercise my body, spend time with friends and family to fill my heart, read and listen to audiobooks and podcasts to stay informed and make sure to get a lot of vitamin D! As an extra bonus, I also love a good facemask. What's the most fulfilling part of your job? Why live one life when you can experience so many. Each time I book a role; it sets me off on a whole new adventure. It’s incredibly satisfying as I’m continually learning and growing and being challenged in numerous ways. Can you tell us about an exciting time in your career? Right now! Being on two shows at the same time has added rocket fuel to my life. Moving back and forth between a comedy (Tacoma FD) and a Western (Yellowstone) is beyond rewarding. Being surrounded by people whom I consider titans in the industry i.,e. Taylor Sheridan and Kevin Costner on Yellowstone and the comedic genius of Kevin Heffernan and Steve Lemme on Tacoma FD is incredibly humbling. I am in a constant state of awe and wonderment. What would you title this current chapter in your life? -The Upswing? -I was told there would be snacks. -Might be going big, might be going home. -This is where I’m hanging my hat…for now. How do you educate yourself on ways of maintaining healthy skin? I became a certified health coach a few years ago, so I am a big believer in the inside-out approach. What we eat and drink shows up on our skin, in our sleep patterns and in our dayto-day energy levels and moods. 144 SEPTEMBER 2020 | MODELISTE

What do you love most about Pixi Beauty? I really appreciate the high-quality ingredients and botanical infusions they use that makes my skin glow. I’m partial to the thoughtful and elegant packaging; which looks so chic on my vanity. And you can’t beat Pixi’s refreshingly affordable price point. What are your top 3 favorite Pixi Beauty products? My skin can get dry, so my go-to products are the Rose Oil Blend, the Rose Caviar Essence, and the H20 Skin Drink. They have been lifesavers for me! What does the word empowerment mean to you? I think the root of empowerment is liking and accepting, all of yourself. From there, you can feel confident about who you are and what you bring to the table. Taking it a step further, you learn how to advocate for yourself and make better choices. Once you master that, you can extend that to advocating for others within your personal and professional community and the world at large. That’s what empowerment means to me…so far. I’m sure I will expand on that as I get older and gain more life experience.

In what ways do you use your platform for the greater good? I lend my voice, financial assistance, my time and my energy on a regular basis. I’m always trying to use my platform to highlight organizations and individuals who are doing work I admire and who need the support. During these tough times, what has kept you motivated? Staying motivated has been challenging. I spent so much time trying to keep up with the news about what was going on in the world, while simultaneously trying not to be anxious about it all, which led to mental and emotional burnout. It’s a really heavy time, and there is a lot to be anxious about. My priority has shifted to a more balanced approach of staying safe, staying informed and staying connected to my loved ones. How do you remain fit, active, and healthy with stay-at-home orders intact? I guess this will track back to what you just asked me, but I have slowed down my life and exercise routine. I have been taking beautiful long walks with my puppy and have noticed how my body has appreciated the gift of rest and relaxation. To balance that out, I have put more focus on eating healthy and cooking my own clean meals.

As a creative in quarantine, how have you found inspiration and ways to create? Utilizing the senses helps me stay balanced and engaged. I have been reading a lot, which inspires me to write, listening to a bunch of new music, which lead me to learn the guitar, and when all that fails, I turn to baking which always takes my anxiety away. How can you as an individual actively take part in fighting a system of oppression and standing in solidarity with your peers of color to amplify their voices? I think the most essential step is to educate ourselves on what it means to be antiracist. From there, you can appreciate how supporting Black-owned businesses, protesting, advocating for your Black friends and co-workers, standing up against racist micro-aggressions and holding corporations accountable can and will effect real change. How have you found ways to educate yourself and those around you? There are so many resources to choose from now. I have been learning so much through podcasts, books, and quite frankly Instagram where I follow @theconscioskid, @osopepatrisse, @egi_org and @shityoushouldcareabout, to name just a few. I encourage you to check them out if you aren’t familiar. In addition to that, I’ve been initiating difficult conversations, exchanging information and ideas and encouraging people I know to research, follow the money and dig deep into individual and corporate alignment and agendas. What do you think are ways that others can help society and our surrounding communities? We are living in an unprecedented era wherein social media has the ability to connect people to organizations, and communities are being created because of that. You can find countless opportunities to volunteer your time, services, or donate resources, from the local to global scale. In what ways has your life changed due to current events? I’ve taken this time to slow down and go inward. I’ve tended to my relationships with more care. And like everyone else, I’ve become more proficient with Zoom. What advice do you have for someone who aspires to create a career like your own? My chosen career requires a lot of passion, patience, and persistence. It’s also necessary to stay out of your own way by continuing to show up and do the work. Just as important, you must study and educate yourself through film, theater, observing actors and directors and reading a ton of scripts. Work hard and you’ll be rewarded. I’ve found that to be true in life and in acting. It’s that life is short and things can change in an instant – don’t wait, just go for it.

20 Questions with Julia Friedman Hello gorgeous, Tell us a little bit about yourself. Hello! I’m born and raised in Los Angeles, California which is where I currently live. I am a lifestyle blogger and have a passion for creating and exploring. I am also an aspiring actress. Acting has been a passion of mine since I was 15 but life and school got in the way and I recently got back into it! How would you define yourself in three words? Savvy, compassionate, and ambitious. In what ways have you been incorporating self - care into your daily routine? I have been exercising regularly and taking my goldendoodle puppy on lots of walks which has been great for both of us! I also am very passionate about skincare. I love to mask about three times a week. What's the most fulfilling part of your job? Meeting and connecting with people. Can you tell us about an exciting time in your career? I went to Italy with Atelier Cologne last year and it was the most amazing trip. We covered almost all of the Amalfi Coast and Southern Italy to local fruit groves and extraction facilities. What would you title this current chapter in your life? “The Rebirth" How do you educate yourself on ways of maintaining healthy skin? From fellow bloggers and beauty gurus, YouTube is great for honest opinions from real people as well! What do you love most about Pixi Beauty? That they are 1000% cruelty-free. What are your top 3 favorite Pixi Beauty products? Oooh I love their It’s Eye Time eyeshadow palette, their MultiBalm, and their brow gel! What does the word empowerment mean to you? I like to think of empowerment as a way to internally lift yourself (and those around you) by expressions of both passion and reason. 150 SEPTEMBER 2020 | MODELISTE

In what ways do you use your platform for the greater good? I am very verbal with my beliefs on all my different platforms. I have been educating myself from people I follow and really finding time to take action by not working with brands who discriminate against any race or religion. I allow no hate speech on my account and I will have an argument (if necessary) with anyone who challenges my opinions on the much needed reform of this country. During these tough times, what has kept you motivated? Honestly, the thought of traveling again, but working out has definitely been my savior. How do you remain fit, active, and healthy with stay-at-home orders intact? In Los Angeles, gyms have finally begun to reopen. I have a personal trainer that I train with 4 times a week. Before the gyms were open I really liked doing Melissa Wood Heath and Wundabar On Demand which are both online pilates/yoga workout programs. As a creative in quarantine, how have you found inspiration and ways to create? I really have had time to focus on what makes me truly happy and what I am actually passionate creating content about, I started my YouTube channel at the start of the pandemic and it has become the thing I look forward to doing every week (I post every Wednesday on there). What and/or who has had the most influence on your growth and why? I don’t think there is a single person, but I think myself. I am pretty hard on myself and being self-employed at 22 comes with the responsibility of holding yourself accountable day in and day out. How can you as an individual actively take part in fighting a system of oppression and standing in solidarity with your peers of color to amplify their voices? Well to start, I did a ton of research and learned what I can do to help fight. I have hard conversations, I actively post accurate information on my socials, and I will not support any company that discriminates against any religion or race. This is only the beginning for me, I know I can do more and I know I still have a lot to learn. How have you found ways to educate yourself and those around you? I follow and am friends with a bunch of influencers who are constantly posting useful information on their socials. I turn to them first, then I do my own research via Google and Twitter.

What do you think are ways that others can help society and our surrounding communities? In my mind it’s very simple: don’t be a racist prick, yet many people have stereotypes ingrained into them and so I think we need to turn to the younger generations and people my age to truly show the future generations that we are all one and that we, as a whole, will not tolerate any discrimination in any environment. I was brought up with the idea that everyone is equal and that we are all given an equal opportunity, however just the mere fact that I am white is a privilege. I have had to educate myself and I think most people need to educate themselves. My advice to you would be: Have the uncomfortable conversations, shift peoples opinions, and help pave the path for change. In what ways has your life changed due to current events? I’ve been suffering with anxiety and honestly sadness. I can’t believe the suffering and loss our country is experiencing. The future is just so unknown, it’d scary. What advice do you have for someone who aspires to create a career like your own? Do not take no for an answer. If someone tells you no, you’re talking to the wrong person. Be passionate, be original, be you! No one is you, it’s your superpower.

What does the word empowerment mean to you?

I read a quote once that stuck with me. “You may never know how powerful your words and actions are, or ever realize the impact they make on other’s lives.” To me, empowerment is about being confident in who you are and having control over your life. Being unapologetically yourself can give someone else the confidence that they didn’t know they were missing.

20 Questions with Laila Loves

Hello gorgeous, Tell us a little bit about yourself. Eeek, where do I start? Ok let me try and keep this short and sweet! I grew up and lived in London pretty much all of my life and that’s where I started my career as an online content creator after deciding to plunge into the world of YouTube. I create content surrounding fashion, beauty, travel… and my dog. Last year I was named in Forbes in their Top 10 Beauty Influencers which was surreal! How would you define yourself in three words? Outgoing, funny and bubbly In what ways have you been incorporating self - care into your daily routine? Being quarantined for the last few months gave me a real insight into self care. It allowed me to discover new skincare and haircare products that I’ve fallen in love with and have now introduced into my daily routine. Firstly, skincare is a HUGE love of mine and I do the 8 step Korean skincare routine twice a day, morning and night. I also discovered the meditation app called “Calm” a few months ago which I’m loving. It gives you the space and time to focus on the present moment and allow my mind to become still. What's the most fulfilling part of your job? Meeting new people!! That is definitely one of my favourite things about my job, hearing people’s stories and that I’ve helped people through hard times is the most incredible feeling. Can you tell us about an exciting time in your career? Yesss! Ok, so have you heard of the Netflix show “Elite”? Netflix contacted me to fly out to Madrid to be part of the trailer for Elite which was just insane - I am obsessed with Money Heist and some of the cast from the show were there. Yeap, I fangirled. What would you title this current chapter in your life? UNAPOLOGETICALLY ME. How do you educate yourself on ways of maintaining healthy skin? As I mentioned earlier I love finding new skincare products and new techniques. I enjoy watching YouTube videos and browsing through online articles about vegan skincare and ingredients that benefit your skin. What do you love most about Pixi Beauty? E V E R Y T H I N G! haha, no seriously. Can I say everything? Pixi Beauty has so many 156 SEPTEMBER 2020 | MODELISTE

incredible products that do wonders for my skin. I couldn’t live without their Glow Tonic Serum!! What are your top 3 favorite Pixi Beauty products? Glow Tonic Serum, Glow Tonic and Hydrating Milky Mist. In what ways do you use your platform for the greater good? In a world full of social media and editing apps where the “perfect image” is forced in our face on a daily basis, it’s very important to show people that your flaws are beautiful. I never edit out my stretch marks or edit my body/face in any way because I think of how my younger self would feel looking at all of these perfect, retouched images and compare herself to them. It’s extremely important to me that I use my platform to normalize things like stretch marks, scars, birthmarks etc. During these tough times, what has kept you motivated? It was tough at the start of the year when we were all uncertain of what was happening but I think I’ve finally gotten into a routine of staying motivated. I found that ensuring I wake up early every single day at 7am and then working out straight away kept me motivated for the rest of the day. Working out in the morning before checking my phone or anything else makes a huge difference to my mood. How do you remain fit, active, and healthy with stay-at-home orders intact? As all the gyms were closed I resorted to online workouts, which worked out great for me because it became part of my daily routine. Also making sure that I eat healthy but also still allow myself to have a treat every now and then seems to keep me on track. (my addiction to ice cream is not normal, really…) As a creative in quarantine, how have you found inspiration and ways to create? During quarantine I have discovered so many incredible content creators! It’s been so fun and interesting - I also found myself using different social media platforms such as TikTok and now Instagram reels where you can show a whole different side of yourself to your audience which is super fun.

What and/or who has had the most influence on your growth and why? My mum has had the most influence on my growth in life. She’s supported and guided me through the toughest times I’ve faced and helped me grow into the woman I am today. If I could be 1/4 of the woman my mum is, that’s enough for me. How can you as an individual actively take part in fighting a system of oppression and standing in solidarity with your peers of color to amplify their voices? Educating yourself on the past and the present of oppression is a start, then learning positive actions to take in exp. promoting more people of colour on my social platforms, also day to day life I must embrace my beauty as a black woman, and use platforms I have been given from Instagram to Modeliste to be able to amplify so many beautiful peoples voices within and outside of the black community but mainly within the black community as well as this who choose to stand in solidarity with the black community in this time and forever until we create change together. How have you found ways to educate yourself and those around you? Using my social media platforms to share documentaries, books, petitions, articles on ways that people can educate themselves is something that I’ve continued to share. Having conversations with friends and family which were viewed as taboo, being open and truthful about how I see things and a big one is listening to others and their stories so I can see where they are coming from and whether some of my truths can assist them to see things a bit better. What do you think are ways that others can help society and our surrounding communities? More public empowerment of black females and males in the media so the same way over the years their negative image in the media has created a negative image in people's minds and stereotypes, it will do the reverse and create a positive effect and option in peoples minds. We can give our time I would love to do women empowerment talks and women retreats…. Actually I would like to do something like that with Modeliste lol sorry for going off topic.. How would you guys like to do a Women's empowerment retreat with Laila Loves ? What advice do you have for someone who aspires to create a career like your own? Consistency, study your craft - find out what it is that interests you and go with it. Study other people who influence and inspire you and believe in yourself. One of the main things that I would say is to make sure that you’re doing it for the love, not for the money, attention, fame… honestly for the love and passion and everything else will fall into place. I know that sounds cliche but it’s the realness!

20 Questions with Louise Roe Hello gorgeous, Tell us a little bit about yourself. Hello! My name is Louise, I’m a journalist and TV host. I lived in LA for a decade before moving back to the English countryside with my husband and daughter, last year. How would you define yourself in three words? Focused, kind, silly In what ways have you been incorporating self - care into your daily routine? I try to give my skin a face mask once a week, to play tennis a couple of times a week, and to put the phone away and switch off with a movie at the end of a long day. What's the most fulfilling part of your job? It used to be the travel! Actually, it’s the makeovers. I absolutely love seeing the change in people’s demeanour and reaction when they’ve had a full makeover. It’s often quite emotional for everyone! Can you tell us about an exciting time in your career? I once hosted the Oscars red carpet, live, for ABC. We had 31 million viewers, which (thank goodness) I didn’t know at the time. I interviewed every nominee and had my very own stage, it was such a buzz. What would you title this current chapter in your life? The happiest I’ve ever been. So much family time and back in England, which I missed. How do you educate yourself on ways of maintaining healthy skin? I love learning about clean products, effective ingredients and new things on the market. Also- a huge difference is made from the inside, so I keep hydrated and eat a lot of healthy fatty foods, like salmon and avocado, which make a noticeable difference. What do you love most about Pixi Beauty? It works! The pigment stays in place all day, and the colours are beautiful. I’ve tried a lot of makeup in my life so when I find something flattering and affordable, I stick with it. What are your top 3 favorite Pixi Beauty products? Vitamin C sheet mask- it instantly makes my skin look plumped and happy, eye reflections palette Reflex Light- the colours are just perfect, I love them. And Other Glow blushJuicy, it’s this peachy, apricot shade and perfect for Summer. 162 SEPTEMBER 2020 | MODELISTE

What does the word empowerment mean to you? Education, empathy, compassion, courage.

How have you found ways to educate yourself and those around you? As above!

In what ways do you use your platform for the greater good? That’s very important to me. What’s the point in having followers and a voice if you don’t use it the right way, particularly right now. There are different ways I try to use mine. On a day-to-day level I respond in depth to messages, many of which are from people seeking help and advice. I work with children’s charities Spread a Smile and Step Up, and I’m also hosting a live session giving people tips on how to become a mentor, with a list of links to organizations that help communities in need. I use my blog for more in-depth articles about causes I really believe it.

What do you think are ways that others can help society and our surrounding communities? I believe so much in mentorship. It’s something almost anyone can do (people often think you need special qualifications - but you do not). I was lucky enough to have 2 incredible mentors in my career, and it’s important to pass that forward, particularly to a younger generation in less privileged communities.

During these tough times, what has kept you motivated? I’ve actually felt more creative during this time than I have in years. Maybe because our brains can rest for a second, they’re able to think in ways they haven’t for a while. I’m launching an entirely new business and can’t wait to share more!

What advice do you have for someone who aspires to create a career like your own? Contact lots and lots of people for an internshipit’s the best way to start and learn on the job. Always smile and be early to work- work your butt off! Keep in touch with any contacts you meet there, and you’ll be top of mind when a position arises. There are no shortcuts, even though social media might make it look that way- so do lots of research and just go for it. You can do it!

How do you remain fit, active, and healthy with stay-at-home orders intact? I’ve been working out from online classes (I wrote a blog post all about my favourites ) and in the beginning we planted a bunch of fruits and veggies in the garden, which we are now picking to eat! That’s very satisfying, and our daughter loves it. As a creative in quarantine, how have you found inspiration and ways to create? I’ve read more books, gone on long walks and watched a lot of old movies that have been on my list for literally years! What and/or who has had the most influence on your growth and why? Becoming a mother. It focuses the mind and prioritizes life in a completely new way. How can you as an individual actively take part in fighting a system of oppression and standing in solidarity with your peers of color to amplify their voices? There are so many ways, big and small, and personally I think that begins with education. I read Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People About Race, along with a few other titles, and am still making my way through different documentaries. Podcasts too. It’s also really important to me to educate our daughter about racism, including what institutional racism means. I’ve been sharing what I’ve found helpful and interesting online, including children’s book recommendations, and some incredible black-owned brands in the fashion, beauty and interiors space too.

In what ways has your life changed due to current events? We have spent so much time at home - like everyone else - and just appreciate any moments much more now. Going for a coffee with a friend is a huge treat now!

I take advantage of these moments to have time for myself and my loved ones As a creative in quarantine, how have you found inspiration and ways to create? We are all human beings, we only differ by characters. I think that if we all propose to work actively and promote acts and protests of non-discrimination and denounce each case, we will eradicate racism. How have you found ways to educate yourself and those around you? I believe that life is a constant learning, we are constantly evolving and we learn from experiences, even bad ones, everything adds up in this life so as not to make the same mistakes. What do you think are ways that others can help society and our surrounding communities? We all live in this world, in the same society, we should not be so selfish and close circles. In what ways has your life changed due to current events? I could say in general terms that within all the bad things, it has helped me to focus on my personal projects, which because of constantly traveling I did not have time. In addition to valuing such simple things, this pandemic has brought out the best of many such as solidarity. What advice do you have for someone who aspires to create a career like your own? 20 Questions with Sarah Grey

What does the word empowerment mean to you? What comes to mind, is the act of taking all of your power back, that you didn’t realize you were giving away. Respecting yourself, speaking up for yourself, loving yourself, and looking out for yourself. It’s a pretty great feeling.

Hello gorgeous, Tell us a little bit about yourself. Hello! I’m Sarah Grey, born and raised in Canada, and I’ve been acting since I was 13. I also love to sing, play guitar, and spend time in nature.

In what ways do you use your platform for the greater good? The Internet can be a scary and hateful place. I try and keep my platform a positive one. I’ve used it a lot recently, through all of the current events, which has felt really fulfilling and purposeful.

How would you define yourself in three words? Sensitive, silly, creative. In what ways have you been incorporating self - care into your daily routine? I think the problems that arise, especially with quarantine, comes from all of the ruminating with our fears and emotions. So I make sure to find ways to get out of my head, and let the emotions flow through me. For me, that’s making sure I get physical and out in nature. I journal to get in touch with myself, and also make sure to write out the things I’m grateful for. Singing/ songwriting has also been a great outlet. What's the most fulfilling part of your job? I love being present and connecting with other artists. So that’s what’s fulfilling while filming. The other fulfilling thing, is hearing that the work I’m doing is bringing something positive to the viewers life. Whether it’s helping them escape for a bit, or making them feel understood, or smile. Can you tell us about an exciting time in your career? I would say there are two exciting times in my career. One is the first time I booked an acting job. That was the first confirmation that someone actually liked what I was doing, and that I might be able to do this. But booking “The Order” was definitely a huge milestone. Probably the most exciting time of my career so far. It was that job that I dreamed about for so long, and it actually came to fruition. What would you title this current chapter in your life? Growth. How do you educate yourself on ways of maintaining healthy skin? YouTube. It’s so great. What do you love most about Pixi Beauty? I love how great the products are for your skin. I think skincare is most important when it comes to the beauty routine. What are your top 3 favorite Pixi Beauty products? Glow mist, sheer cheek gel, and glow mud mask. 174 SEPTEMBER 2020 | MODELISTE

During these tough times, what has kept you motivated? A positive mindset. Focusing on gratitude, love and the hope for change. We can’t control what happens to us but we have control over how we react and look at it. That’s what keeps me motivated. How do you remain fit, active, and healthy with stay-at-home orders intact? I blast music in my headphones and dance like crazy. That was my best hope at getting active. I also have a newfound appreciation for the simplicity of just taking a walk, for the sake of walking and getting fresh air. As a creative in quarantine, how have you found inspiration and ways to create? I had to be more active on finding ways to revive my creative juices a bit, and seek out new art, or change within an unchanging environment. I was watching different movies, and listening to different music. But honestly, the self care is what flowed into being able to create. It started there. What and/or who has had the most influence on your growth and why? I have to just say my parents and my older siblings. I was raised to always explore and face growth head on. I love to learn and find moments of clarity, and that all started with my extremely self aware family. How can you as an individual actively take part in fighting a system of oppression and standing in solidarity with your peers of color to amplify their voices? I am lucky to have the platform I do. I’m able to reach a lot of people with what I share, and I am so grateful that I could use that during this time. There are many ways you can help. This movement isn’t going to evolve through one lane. I think we need support in every avenue. Actively educate yourself. That’s the first step. From there we can be mindful in the way we vote, the way we speak, the way we speak UP, who we support and who we don’t. We can sign petitions, donate money to organizations, support black owned businesses, and use our voices. I want to drive home that your voice is so much more powerful than you realize. Please use it.

How have you found ways to educate yourself and those around you? There is a ton of information out there. The “13th” documentary on Netflix is a great place to start. I tried to amplify by sharing any content that I felt was informative, eye opening, encouraging, and supportive. And having ongoing discussions with my loved ones. I think it’s important everyone talks with their circle, because sometimes it takes hearing it from someone you respect and admire, to truly take it in. In what ways has your life changed due to current events? I think the biggest change has been my perspective. I see the world in a much different way now. What advice do you have for someone who aspires to create a career like your own? Firstly, make sure it’s something you truly love. It’s an interesting ride, but the love of acting is the tether. I’d say, try different acting classes and explore the craft. Try to find a good acting community because you can lean on each other, and learn from each other. There’s of a lot of rejection, so it’s important to have a good support system. Therapy wouldn’t hurt either. And on that note! Thanks for having me!

20 Questions with Stephanie Ahn

What do you love most about Pixi Beauty? Pixi Beauty clearly stands for diversity and has incorporated this in all aspects of their brand. From influencer collaboration collections to the models they use on their website, it is so apparent that Pixi Beauty has made it a priority to make their brand relatable to EVERY girl out there.

Hello gorgeous, Tell us a little bit about yourself. My name is Stephanie Ahn. I’m a Canadian Korean influencer and based in Toronto. I became a full time influencer about a year and a half ago to fully pursue my dream and it’s been an amazing ride so far!

What are your top 3 favorite Pixi Beauty products? Summer Glow Palette—it’s the perfect warm neutral palette for my skin tone. The Multi Balm in Baby Petal—I’m a sucker for multi-use makeup products to save time! Glow Tonic—the best and most affordable toner that you need to start using if you haven’t already!

How would you define yourself in three words? Confident, Hustler, Extrovert In what ways have you been incorporating self - care into your daily routine? For me, self care is about living a healthy lifestyle, both mentally and physically. The most important thing I do is start my day with a cup of coffee and do my devotion with God. Meeting God through prayer and reading His word prepares me both emotionally and mentally for my day. The second way I incorporate self-care into my daily routine is working out. Exercise has given me so much energy and rejuvenates my body so I feel stronger and ready to tackle anything that comes at me. What's the most fulfilling part of your job? As an influencer, I have direct access to my followers. Through my content, I am able to inspire young women like me to love themselves and be true to themselves. When I get messages that other women relate to my content, are getting encouraged, and find motivation from my content, that’s when I truly feel that I’m in the right space doing what I’m meant to be doing. Can you tell us about an exciting time in your career? Last year, I got flown out to LA to shoot Laura Canada’s prom collection. It was an absolute dream to be able to shoot with a brand that stood for diversity and loved all body shapes and this was shown through the prom campaign I shot. I’ll never forget the experience and am still close friends with the girls I met on set! What would you title this current chapter in your life? Growth. How do you educate yourself on ways of maintaining healthy skin? I’ve always been obsessed with Korean beauty and skincare and it’s definitely no secret that Korea is incredibly influential in the beauty industry. I keep up to date on the latest products, brands, and techniques that come from Korea and I usually see them popping up a few years down the road to North America.

180 SEPTEMBER 2020 | MODELISTE

What does the word empowerment mean to you? For me, empowerment means believing in yourself and taking control of your own actions, words, thoughts, and life. Everyone is equal and has the same rights. It’s my goal to help individuals feel confident in who they are and their capabilities. In what ways do you use your platform for the greater good? I encourage my followers to be go-getters, be confident in who they are and to practice self-love. Making a difference in our world starts with US. We have to love ourselves first to love others to create change. That’s always what my brand has been built on. During these tough times, what has kept you motivated? My faith. This whole year has been filled with uncertainty and is definitely not going as planned. It’s easy to get lost in a time like this and become discouraged. My relationship with God has helped me get through this time and see the positives that have come out of this. That’s what keeps me going to work harder and never give up no matter what the circumstances are. How do you remain fit, active, and healthy with stay-at-home orders intact? I work out at home and have been trying out new sports to keep it interesting. For me, it’s important to have a weekly workout routine that stays consistent but I leave room for other sports and yoga to change things up 2 days of the week. As well, since quarantine, I’ve started to cook and bake much more and have committed myself to only cook healthy foods. I share a lot of my recipes with my followers and it has become sort of a hobby now! As a creative in quarantine, how have you found inspiration and ways to create? It was definitely a process at first but the first step for me was changing my perspective of my home from “the place I live” to a creative backdrop. I’m at home just like everyone else doing the same things everyone else is doing. So, I took those daily activities and turned it

into content—cooking, cleaning, self care routines, working out--all of this is content and it’s what I realized what my followers wanted to see. The real me doing boring things that everyone else is doing. What and/or who has had the most influence on your growth and why? Definitely my friends and family. I surround myself with positive and hard working people and they push me and encourage me to continuously learn and grow in all aspects of my life and work. If it weren’t for them, I definitely would not have made it this far! How can you as an individual actively take part in fighting a system of oppression and standing in solidarity with your peers of color to amplify their voices? Change starts with us. I truly believe one of the most impactful things we can do is to reflect on how we can change our own actions and words on a daily basis. We must educate ourselves and have difficult conversations addressing racism with our friends and family. Once we realize how prominent racism is in our own communities and commit to transforming our society, that’s when we’ll make a difference. How have you found ways to educate yourself and those around you? I’ve had deep conversations with POCs around me and every single one of them has a story. The things I have heard is heartbreaking—and I live in Canada, the most multicultural country in the world. Now, imagine all of the POCs around the globe that struggle and battle racism on the daily. Getting insight from real people and their real tragedies they have faced, has made me realize how severe and prominent racism is. It’s these stories that I have shared with my peers, family, and followers to educate and show how real racism is in our world. What do you think are ways that others can help society and our surrounding communities? Keep sharing stories, signing petitions, donating, and don’t stop, EVER. Racism is an issue that is going to take time to eliminate and it’s up to us to change our society. In what ways has your life changed due to current events? We’re experiencing so much uncertainty but at the same time, we’re seeing a lot of positive transformation that will be historical. With so much happening, I’ve definitely become more proactive and outspoken on things that matter. I’ve shifted my priorities and goals in life and have never felt more confident in my own personal brand and future. What advice do you have for someone who aspires to create a career like your own? Just GO for it! If you’re passionate about it, don’t look back and just do it. Hesitation and over analyzing can be the biggest hurdle to defeat in this industry and you have to see past it. Don’t care about what other people think and be confident in who you are. Know that your potential is endless!
