It is a great honor and filled with immense enthusiasm and excitement in which I bring to you the debut issue of Modeliste Men’s. Our cover model, Machine Gun Kelly, is as self-effacing as he is talented. Machine Gun Kelly, known also by his real name Colson Baker, effortlessly defies easy categorization. From his rise to stardom and life in the spotlight, the complexities he shares in his song lyrics, to his latest collaboration as the face of the John Varvatos Fall/ Winter 2017 campaign, he has paved his own path on his own terms. In a moment when the “Industry” is increasingly about what’s next, he has risen to a legendary status. With so much talent in one place; hard work, brilliance, and with complex and divergent ideas of what it is to be a musician, he's open and honest enthusiasm have been inextricable from his life’s work. Machine Gun Kelly is a testament to his chameleonic qualities---- and to the fact that he is ultimately only ever himself. It thrills us the most to think of all the things he will let us see this year, next year, and many more years to come. THE REAL REEL MACHINE GUN KELLY

Machine Gun Kelly,is as self-effacing as he is talented. Known also by his real name Colson Baker, MGK effortly defies easy categorization. From his rise to stardom and life in the spotlight, the complexities he shares in his song lyrics, Machine Gun Kelly has paved his own path on his own terms. With so much talent in one place; hard work, brilliance, and a certain kind of honest vulnerability, Machine Gun Kelly’s open enthusiasm have been inextricable from his life’s work. Machine Gun Kelly is a testament to his chameleonic qualities---- and to the fact that he is ultimately only ever himself. There’s something gratifying about seeing someone like Machine Gun Kelly grow because one knows there will be so much more to his story. Here is what we know so far….

Q&A

MKG: What up guys, This is Machine Gun Kelly in the city of fuckin' devils and angels here shooting my cover for Modeliste. Modeliste: We are excited to have you as the first male cover for Modeliste magazine! MGK: Tight. Modeliste: Can you share with us what your favorite look was from today's shoot? MGK: My favorite look today came in the form of a very simple accessory, and that was just taking a button up and tying it around ... I mean classic move for ... Yeah, for a rock and roll soul and just flipping it halfway around. Who would have thought that probably the least most expensive item in here added to the outfit the most. So that one, the long trench half flipped around button up tied around and extremely overly-long earring… there's only probably one person that could pull off. Not naming any names. Modeliste: How would you describe your personal style? MGK: I like passing by mirrors or windows, especially since I travel so much or when you get a glance you're like, "Oh shit," and then you're like "Oh shit, that's me. Tight." You know what I mean? Like "Oh shit" moments, you know? I used to pride myself on making really classic casual looks pop. I used to be big in black leather vests and just classic nice fitting black t-shirts with black skinny jeans. I branded that with me for the first five, six years of my career, and then now I'm kind of giving people the excitement of seeing me look different every time they see me. So it's almost like you go to a Machine Gun Kelly show and you do expect to look onstage and be entertained by not just the voice or the band, but by the outfit as well.

20

Modeliste: You're also the face of the fall/winter 2017 John Varvatos campaign. How did you get involved with John Varvatos? MGK: Me and John Varvatos met outside of one of his shows a couple years back that I was invited to, and I was actually leaving the event to go smoke a joint and Varvatos was walking past me and a mutual friend was like, "Hey John Varvatos, this is Machine Gun Kelly. Machine Gun Kelly this is John Varvatos." John was like, "Oh wow, cool. Nice to meet you man. Where are you going?" And I was like, "Well I'm gonna actually go smoke this joint if you want me to be completely honest with you." And he's like, "I'm coming with you." And apparently we're still riding that same high because we're good friends and we're campaigning together. Modeliste: Tell us about your collaboration with Reebok. MGK: I think there's there is a huge kind of cultural Renaissance of classic styles and I don't think there is a '90's era without like speaking about Reeboks’. Being a '90s kid myself and kind of carrying a lot of that spirit around with me, I think Reebok needed the Young Gunner and the Young Gunner needed Reebok. You know what I mean? So I think we're two people with the same initiative at the same time to like bring cool shit back and make it the shit again!

and I don't have future plans, and I don't know what I'm gonna do." That creates this beautiful hunger that people tend to lose. I don't know if I'm just really good at having bad luck or really good at just creating my own anxiety and pain, but it just keeps coming and the hunger just keeps getting better and crafted better. It's not like I'm fucking Lauryn Hill over here, but like there's just something cool about the way I sing the lyrics I write and I just realized that on my third album. So it seems like I'm just finding out how to use my voice, which is crazy. Modeliste: Do you have a favorite song on this album? MGK: My favorite song on my new album is, "Let You Go." It's a song I wrote in my bedroom after the biggest break up of ... probably the first real intense ... That's a lie. The first grown, intense break up for me. It's like, I wrote three chords, four chords and it fuckin' goes off when we perform it live. And you know what? I love looking in the crowd and seeing a bunch of beautiful women with broken hearts just singing the night away. That's where I'm at right now, women singing and being free and sharing their big bright smiles makes me happy. Modeliste: What is a collaboration which you would love to have?

MGK: It would be pretty cool to do stage collaborations right now. I think studio collaborations, I don't know... Modeliste: So going to your music, where do you draw your inspiration Sometimes your collab with people and you never know if you're gonna from when you're creating your get the gem that you want music? from them. I'm more looking "Oh, well like the for like a really cool tour MGK: You know it's funny, on my real world is here to do. Me and Linkin Park supposed to do a last album I wrote now and like I'm were generationally untouchable the song 27 and I broke and I don't tour... The idea of it is was talking about you almost have have future plans, still grand and forever will grand and it's fucking to create pain just and I don't know be awesome. I think, I'm just to get inspiration what I'm gonna now looking for something when you get to a to fill that void because point where like do." that was like the ultimate your normal pain is gone. It’s weird because normal pain collaboration. is of an average young kid growing up and you realize, "Oh, well like the real world is here now and like I'm broke

Modeliste: You perform with a full band and tie together both rock and hip hop elements to your performance. Would you say that the traditional boundaries of musical genres are dead? MGK: I would say that the traditional boundaries are dead, but back when they weren't I was still doing music and I still remember people being like, "Well, how do you categorize your music?" Or like "What genre are you?" 'Cause I would come out with a fucking club banger and I'd still have a six inch Mohawk… I've always been very hard to put in a genre. Yeah. I don't know. I don't know.

Recently, I was just in Norway playing at the top of the hill, like the top of the hill and I like looked over and there's this lake and then you're in Norway. Then the police come and detain you, and you get arrested, and then et cetera. But until that point it was a really, really beautiful view. Hahaaaaaa Modeliste: What do you like to do most when you're not working?

Just pick at Frankenstein all day. He hasn't woke up yet, so I'm gonna just keep fucking picking at Frankenstein until he decides to get up and beat my heart. Modeliste: What's something on your bucket list that you would love to accomplish in the next five years?

MGK: On my fuck it list? MGK: I don't do anything else. I just Everything. I'm just playing. Fuck obsessively pluck at Machine Gun Kelly. it. Bucket list would probably be Yeah, when I'm not doing cool things ... Bucket list would be just getting as Machine Gun Kelly, I'm mostly just in a mood and being in a mood at criticizing how much I should be doing the Met Gala or something. Do you something cool at that very moment. know what I mean? Like just a So it took me eight months to use my classic career moment like, "dude, Modeliste: What do you enjoy most and most feel passionate about when pool that I had in the back of my house, Machine Gun Kelly got wasted and which was a fuckin' lit cool pool. I just this happened." Like just getting one you're on stage and touring? Do you never did normal things. I would never of those under my belt is like ... Just have any of those "ah-ha" moments when you're on stage, and you're like, leave my room or a studio because it was because I'm already stuck in the job just like, "any moment you could create of a celebrity at this point. You know "Wow.” the best song ever." Like, "you need what I mean? Quote un-quote. So it's like, "I might as well get a ..." MGK: Yep, I’ve had a handful recently… the best song ever. You need it, man." .I had a stop and stare moment and Like, "you're not filling up arenas, dude. Like God, that Kanye, Taylor Swift soak it all in moment the other day on You need the best song ever." I just sit moment was like ... I mean you look stage. I was actually here in Los Angeles there and I just sit there until it hits me. back and you're like it's fucked up, performing outside of the Colosseum, Obviously I haven't made the biggest but it's just like prime TV, dude. which I think it's like 90,000 capacity or song ever yet, so I'm just probably gonna It's so good. And you know, it's in something like that, and I'm on the show keep sitting here until it happens. hindsight, so it's like, "Fuck off." and I go out there and I'm performing We all were like sitting of the edge of this song called “Kiss The Sky,” and our seat like, "Oh shit!" You know ironically there's this patch of clouds "Before I used to be like what I mean? I'm good for that, trust and then the sun popped out ... that was me. I live in my skin. I didn't do all doin' it, doin' it, doin' tight. these "oh shit" moments just for the I started wearing sunglasses in concert it, because I didn't know six people that are there to enjoy it. because sometimes I just want to cover Six million people need to see a good how fuckin' long I was who I am and I don't want to let people MGK like "fuck it" moment. gonna be around. You in yet. Sometimes I'll keep them on the whole show, other times I'll keep them know what I mean? But Modeliste: Well, we're sorry for on maybe until like the sixth song or now I'm getting all these that. something or other times maybe they'll signs it's like, "Okay, just make me feel so comfortable right MGK: I just hope my ... It's cool I away that I'm like, "Fuck this ... Look you've lost so many people don't like ... Get the wrong moment, at me!" But other times I'm like, just and you've been through it's like, "Oh, fuck dude." depending on my mood, like that was a real dark week for me last week so I so much shit, like you are Modeliste: Someone makes you had my fucking glasses on. But I'll tell here for a really specific the moment? you what, I looked up and through the reason, and I don't think clouds a giant airplane just burst through MGK: If it doesn't turn out, oh yeah, the clouds. I forgot LAX is like right it was to let go." then we'll see how it goes. I won't there, and it was just like stop the whole try I'll just keep letting it naturally song but the chords are still playing. I'm happen. like, "Everybody look up at the fucking You know what I mean? So I'm gonna plane and just look around." And it's chill for sure, but it's just not now, so Modeliste: It'll happen. like, "What a beautiful moment," you what do I do in my spare time? I focus on know what I mean? It sounds lame and becoming a better friend, better father, MGK: Yeah it'll happen. It's gotta maybe I was just high, but it was really better entertainer. I have sex, smoke, and happen dude. ... I mean, it's just a fuckin' plane, but to I just work on Frankenstein dude. play in that setting is like, "Whoa."

21

Q&A Modeliste: Do you have any particular artist or record that you feel inspired you to follow the path of becoming a musician? MGK: Okay. When it comes to inspiration I guess, or how I started, I think I spoke on how I started, but I think there got to a point where I was re-inspired and was able to talk about things a little bit differently, a little bit ... I'm a pretty dark person without the corny stigma of like, "Oh yeah, I'm dark. I'm emo." I say, I don't try to be it's just like naturally what it is, and it's like something I'm just ... it's just, fuck it is. Sometimes I just like being sad, you know what I mean? Like sometimes it's just not ... you know I'm just not ... my chemicals in my body are like the first emotion that comes is not happiness. So I kinda was struggling with that trying to cover it up, and then I discover like gonzo journalism and I was like, "Whoa, this is really intense and it's really graphic and dark and the subject matters are weird." Hunter S. Thompson's one of those faces of gonzo journalism, if not the creator of gonzo journalism, and he was a very like quirky weird guy. I was telling him earlier, it's funny if you work with me I'm a very, very untraditional coworker. Very yeah ... I have methods that I just tapped into and try attain whatever vibe it is that I want to put out on a record. So I think that I've achieved ... Like 27 I don't give a fuck what you think about Machine Gun Kelly. 27 is absolutely from front to back, a perfect example of how you can display the most pure form of yourself on a song. Modeliste: Wow. MGK: You know what I mean? There should be classes on that song 'cause it ... it blows my mind every time I hear it, and I fuckin' wrote it. But you know what's crazy? I didn't even write ... The most intense part of the song, I didn't write. I just picked up a little demo mike, and I just sat ... They were 22

playing something and I just ... I said the first thing that came to my mind and it was the chorus of the whole song. It was just super ... it was just like my subconscious speaking, because I didn't even think about it. I sort of just said it. It was the darkest, and everyone was like, "Holy shit," and the room just stopped and it was weird. Then we pressed record and no one said anything about it, and then we put the song out and the fans said everything about it. I sort of just said it. It was the darkest, and everyone was like, "Holy shit," and the room just stopped and it was weird. Then we press record and no one said anything about it, and then we put the song out and the fans said everything about it. Modeliste: That's amazing ... about any upcoming projects you have. MGK: I have this movie coming out next year called Captive State. It's the first ... Huge is a weird word, but it's the first big budget, big, big budget, motion picture that I've been a part of. First scifi thing I've been a part of. I've just been doing a lot of music and I think I owe the streets some bounce. I think I owe the rock community some more of that. People keep trying to figure out who I am. I'm just The Gunner dude. It's just, there is no fucking genre. I make what type of music I want to make. I'm a punker, I'll beat your motherfuckin' ass, and I've been through a lot of shit. It's just a fucking vibe dude. You can't put me in a box, BITCH…I'm six foot four, it doesn't fit.

GROOMING

MANSCAPING

For most men, body grooming is stuck somewhere in between looking like a ultra-hipster caveman or one of the guys from One Direction. To help strike that balance, we have the lowdown on what you need even for those down low spaces you probably never thought of could use a little upkeep.

28

BACK CHEST

Get yourself a good pair of clippers. Trim your chest, going in the direction of the grain. Do it dry and use a toner or moisturizer after to prevent redness. Try: Tendskin $15, tendskin.com

I think we can all agree that back hair is never sexy. That’s right, it’s time to book an appointment. Tips for your first time: Take an Advil or a couple of Aspirin before your appointment. Get this done generally every four to six weeks to make it less painful . Don’t put any product on the area for up to 24 hours to prevent irritation. Use a product in between appointments to help keep hair growing back at a rapid pace. Try: Inhibitif Body Serum $47, inhibitif.com

GROOMING BASICS

DOWN UNDER

ARMPITS

Simple deodorant guys. And a light buzz with your clippers if your pit hair is creeping out your shirt sleeves. Try: Task Essential Keep Fresh Deodorant Stick $25, taskessential.com

It’s good to be groomed in this area. Think in terms of keeping hair, but having less volume. A quick pass with clippers can usually do the trick. If you’re tempted to go ‘balls deep’, then be sure to use lots of shaving cream and a very good sharp razor. Use tiny strokes, one stroke and then clean the razor. Then, go back for the next one. Treadmill Workout Dont’s Whether you’re a beginner or you’ve been hitting the gym for years, approaching an unfamiliar piece of equipment is intimidating. That’s why we’re tackling “The Don’t List” things you should never do while using certain pieces of gym equipment. We’re starting with the treadmill. Treadmill workouts might seem simple on the surface, you hop on, crank up the speed, maybe try an incline? How hard can it be? But appearances are deceiving. There’s a right way and a wrong way to get your treadmill workout in. Whether you’re a beginner or you’ve been hitting the gym for years, approaching an unfamiliar piece of equipment is intimidating.

1

Don’t hold the treadmill when you incline walk Holding on while you walk on a treadmill defeats the purpose of using your own body weight to burn fat. The action of what is essentially pulling your body weight up a hill is essential to getting the most out of your treadmill workout.

When you go into cruise control mode, it’s easy to lose sight of whether or not you’re improving week to week. Running is all about being mindful and aware.

3

Don’t let the treadmill pull you, you pull the treadmill During any treadmill workout your mindset matters. Imagine pulling the treadmill with the balls of your feet and propelling yourself instead of the treadmill propelling you. Stay light on your feet and don’t strike the machine with your heels.

4

Don’t let the numbers you see intimidate you When you increase the speed, immediately look up and allow your body to acclimate naturally. Let your physical body take over without mentally agonizing about the speed number you’ve chosen. Settle into the pace without freaking out.

5 6

Only use the treadmill for intervals and shorter workouts Avoid the treadmill for long runs. This may seem counterintuitive (especially in the winter) but many treadmills are hard so it’s basically like you’re running on concrete. Avoid watching TV during all workouts You have the time you spend on the treadmill to unplug from life. Be mindful when you run and think about your body, the motion, and breathing. Watching TV isn’t going to give you any of that. Run because you want a mental release. It’s also all too easy to zone out to the TV and lose your footing.

2

Don’t put a towel over the numbers You need to be mindful of pace and time when you run. There should never be a running workout wherein you are completely oblivious to your statistics. 31

The Ultimate Skateboarding Experience

33

Modeliste Men’s caught up with the founder and creator of the most renowned skateboarding ramps in the World, Tyler Large. With simplistic designs and concepts, built for the most epic of rides, it’s easy to see why OC Ramps has taken the industry by storm and has become a celebrity favorite. Here’s why we’re obsessed. Describe the overall concept of OC Ramps. Tyler Large: We manufacture wooden skateboard ramps in the kit form. We pre-cut and pre-drill all the pieces, box it up and ship to the customer to assemble on their own. It's like the Ikea of Skateboarding- except our products are a lot of easier to assemble. Based online, we ship kits all over the world. How did OC Ramps evolve into the brand it is today? Tell us about your journey. Tyler Large: I began building ramps with my family and friends in the late nineties in Huntington Beach. In high school I started selling the ramps with my brothers. Once I graduated high school, I came up with the idea of building/selling ramps in kit form. From there (2005), we got a basic website and started a very basic line of products (ie a few quarter pipes, one size mini ramp/halfpipe). It was very grass roots. Each year we got a slightly bigger warehouse, better website; I would have never dreamed of being in my thirties and in our 13th year of business. Skateboarding has brought us to people and places we would have never imagined. What inspired the creation of your latest styles of ramps? Tyler Large: We build ramps that we like to skate ourselves. We also have a professional skate team that ride for us; guys that are X-Games gold medalists and compete in all the major worldwide contests. These skaters have come up with their favorite ramp (or rail) to skate and we’ve created that product line called the pro ‘signature series.’ They are all obstacles that these guys skate at their house in between contests. 34

35

36

Tips to picking out the perfect ramp style? Tyler Large: So much is personal preference- it's like ordering a pizza. Some like skating ledges and rails while others may prefer to skate transition such as quarter pipes and halfpipes or mini ramps. Fortunately, there truly is no right or wrong answer, but we do recommend kids skating at their local park to help determine their favorite items to skate. How do you describe your personal skateboarding style? Tyler Large: Growing up it was a mix of both street and mini ramps. As I get older, I’m not so much a fan of street (too brutal these days!). I like to skate mini ramps and bowls. My favorite ramp to skate would be any of our (wider) mini ramps; something 16ft and wider.

37

3 Most important rules in skateboarding to follow:

1Skate

2 Don’t quit

because it's because you enjoy it. tough

3 You’ll get

a million times better with any OC Ramps obstacle.

38

Skateboarding Icon? Tyler Large: There are too many legends to write. Obviously, I have a huge respect for the original rippers that brought it to what we have today; Eric Koston, Steve Berra, Chad Muska, Rodney Mullen, etc. At the same time I think the skaters of today are extremely iconic. I have nothing but love for our pro team; Dave Bachinsky, Greg Lutzka, Cody McEntire, Jordan Hoffart, Chris Joslin, Ryan Decenzo and TJ Rogers. Celebrity fans of your line? Tyler Large: We do a lot of ramps for Lil Wayne. About 5 years ago, he added us to his ‘rider.’ In essence, it means, wherever Wayne goes to film (music video, commercial, etc) we go set up ramps and skate with him in between sets. It’s a blast- super rad guy. We have built skate ramps for just about every celebrity in Hollywood— they all have kids that skate; Britney Spears, Madonna, Mike D (Beastie Boys), Ben Stiller (just built a ramp in his office), Will Smith, Johnny Depp, Travis Barker, James Hetfield, etc. We’ve been very blessed to work with some fun and amazing folks! If OC Ramps had a Theme Song this very moment, what would it be? Tyler Large: Ahh man, well, we were just out in Texas doing some work and ended up following Metallica for a few stops. I’d have to say anything from the new Hardwired album. What we can look forward to with OC Ramps? Tyler Large: Our biggest event is in October, we call, Ramptober. This year will be our 9th annual event. We have all the pro team come out, several live bands, skate contests, food/drink…. it's an absolute blast. Its an all ages and free event. We also have some new products coming out Q4 of this year— just before Christmas. Time to get a rad ramp/rail from Santa. Describe your blog/ social channels? My blog and social channels revolve around fashion, lifestyle and travel. I use my pages to express myself through my photography and fashion. What makes your blog and social channel so unique and the ultimate go-to for all the latest trends? My blogs and social channels are very personable. I feel I have a connection with the people that follow me. I do a lot of live streams to engage with all those who take the time out of their day to look at my page. What inspired you to create a blog? How did you begin? I realized that I could share my passions with other people through instagram. I didn’t start it to necessarily get a career from it but it turned out that way. It gave me a different creative outlet at a time when I was working 6 days a week on my audio engineering degree. Consistent, pragmatic, and elegant, there’s nothing not to love about J Fig’s look. Jose is a great example of those men who steadfastly eschew kowtowing to anyone else’s rules. We love the birdseye views of his outfits and are constantly envious of his jet-setting lifestyle

Describe your blog/ social channels? A menswear and lifestyle blog aimed to inspire and be an outlet of motivation for men to be the best version of themselves, on the outside and on the inside. What makes your blog and social channel so unique and the ultimate go-to for all the latest trends? My blog and social media channel is all about menswear, current and classic. I like to mix and match the current trends with timeless classics. I also talk a lot about taking a “subtle bold approach” to outfits, push the boundaries just enough while still holding on to some classic ease. What inspired you to create a blog? How did you begin? I have a very interesting story… I used to be a “fat kid” growing up and carried all the negative stigmas that come with that. Fast forward to changing my life be losing 60lbs, I found this confidence that was once not there. This allowed me to fully dive into my passion for menswear and fashion and so, one 4th of July, I posted my first “outfit lay”. This would be the start of many outfit posts to come. I think for the first 2 years, I posted a new outfit everyday! (wow, that was tough!!) What has been your greatest achievement or “ah-ha!” moment with your blog/ social channels? I knew that I was making a mark in the menswear community when GQ reached out to include me in their “Top 10 West Coast male fashion influencers” What elements do you think create an engaging IG feed? Personality, great content and unique and genuine style. People see through all the gimmicks! Any favorite bloggers you personally love to follow? Blake Steven and Eff Ulloa are two of my favorites. I am also a huge fan of Ty Severe, Blake Scott and Perkens Bien Aime (who have become some of my greatest friends!). And,of course, the menswear influencer pioneers that began this social media craze!

In 3 words: How would you describe your personal style? West coast, business casual, modern classic. Sorry, 3 words were not enough. What types of posts do you think create the most engagement? My followers really gravitate to my #aerialview shots and close up shots of the details of my outfit. But, I strongly believe that the best posts are the personable and relatable ones. What you’re looking forward to wearing most this Summer season? I love a bold and printed shirt and those are always in heavy rotation in the summer. Pairing them with a linen suit or white jeans and a pair of loafers. Can’t forget a classic pair of shades. What item can’t you live without when traveling? I always have to have lip balm with me…. and a pair of trunks, I make sure to always hit the pool. Any Summer plans? I intend to do some serious traveling and creating some fun “staycation” content. Summers in LA are the best for some serious city exploring! The warmth and sun make everything that much better. What is your ultimate go-to hair, grooming or skincare product? I love American Crew pomade and a mix between Khiels and Lab Series products. Favorite App on your phone. Obviously, Instagram but non-social media app? I would have to say Spotify. I love music! Most used filter? I’m a purist to the original VSCO filters, finding myself using A2 or A6 too. Most played song on itunes/spotify? I currently have the new XX album on heavy rotation. Also, “Can’t stop me now” from Queen gets played often, it motivates me! What is your current indulgence? I just binge watched the new season of Master of None.… iced coffee is a forever indulgence.

Without them, my page would serve no purpose. THANK YOU GUYS!! LOVE YOU ALL! something personal? I have ran 4 marathons and was 15 seconds shy from qualifying for the Boston Marathon. What did you love most about the Modeliste Mode Around the Globe Getaway? The people! Everyone on the trip was amazing! Describe your blog/ social channels? Goldnique is a lifestyle blog dedicated to the values of individual style, aspirational travel and genuine selfexpression. Showcasing my personal style, grooming and travel adventures, Goldnique strives to be the manual for modern Millennial living. What makes your blog and social channel so unique and the ultimate go-to for all the latest trends? I am really focused on channeling a new voice for Millennials. I defy being boxed into a niche, remain fluid in my interests, stay ferocious in my individuality and passions... just like my audience. It’s important for me to embody a new generation of influencer, one whose authenticity can be seen in its multi-dimensionality. Kendrick Lamar and Karl Lagerfeld, Skateboarding and Saville Row, James Bond suits and James Dean t-shirts... It’s always a surprise what I’ll post next. What inspired you to create a blog? How did you begin? I’m a former AAA hockey player and professional skateboarder. I started to gain a social media following when I was living in LA and Paris, showing my life and my skateboarding. When I stopped skateboarding due to injuries, I was really lost as to what to do with my life. My mom suggested I start a blog because I already had a social media following and had always had a passion for individuating myself through my style choices. I now work as a full-time fashion, travel and lifestyle digital influencer and editor of Goldnique. What has been your greatest achievement or “ah-ha!” moment with your blog/ social channels? I just had a two-page spread in GQ’s March 2017 edition. That was epic! What elements do you think create an engaging IG feed? I know everybody’s big on niche feeds, but I find them fairly repetitive. I like the element of surprise, like “Wow, I didn’t expect to see that on their feed!” That captures my attention and makes me stop to see what it’s all about.

64

Any favorite bloggers you personally love to follow? I mostly follow people that I have a personal connection to. People whom I admire because they don’t just put out awesome content but are truly decent people. In 3 words: How would you describe your personal style? Rockstar dat way. What types of posts do you think create the most engagement? Instagram is pushing video hard through its new algorithm, and we’ve been seeing higher engagement on the videos I’m producing. We wanted to integrate video in a unique way, which is why I’ve been creating compilation videos that take the best of a month’s worth of my Snaps/Instagram Stories and making them into a fast-paced, behind-the-scenes look at my world. What you’re looking forward to wearing most this Summer season? I wore a lot of velvets last season, so I’m looking forward to more silks with embroidered florals. I’ll be pairing them with color blocks of black and white. What item can’t you live without when traveling? New socks. I hate wearing socks that have been worn before, so I always load up before a trip. Any Summer plans? European domination. I’ll be spending the summer in Paris, where I grew up. What is your ultimate go-to hair, grooming or skincare product? My GHD straightening iron. I have naturally curly hair that I’m constantly working to straighten. Favorite App on your phone. Tinder. Most used filter? Fade. Most played song on itunes/spotify? “Mask Off” by Future, “What I Got On” by Minus Gravity.

65

66

What is your current indulgence? Voss Water. They send me bottles whenever I travel, so I’m spoiled. Favorite way to end the day. In bed with a beautiful woman. What did you love the most about the UNICO 20º87º Hotel Riviera Maya? The Jacuzzi on the balcony was a game changer. Top 3 Things on your Bucket List. Resurrect Marilyn Monroe, win an Oscar, win a Grammy. What’s next for you? Any upcoming projects we can be on the lookout for? I’m passionate about music and have a ton of friends who are recording artists. I’m going to be spending some time recording in the studio with them, so we’ll see where that leads. What’s one thing you would like your fans to know about you? That I’m a really nice person. I just play a villain in social media. What did you love most about the Modeliste Mode Around the Globe Getaway? I’m really new to the influencer world, so I haven’t made many friends in the industry. It was great meeting people who make a living doing similar work and learning about their careers. There was a great comradery in the group that has lasted long after the trip.

STYLE MYTHS TO AVOID 70

No. 1

No. 3

No. 5

Designer clothing is always expensive

The key to good style is to follow the trends

Only celebrities have person stylists

Yes, most, but not all, designer clothing is expensive and some items never get price reductions, but many do. If there is something you really want, but it’s not within your budget, just keep your eyes and mouth open. Check websites often, subscribe to mailing lists, and don’t be afraid to ask a sales associate when a particular item might be discounted. Another way to get a discount involves making a purchase on a website for the first time. Many companies offer you a discount outright or in exchange for your email address and other information. If there is a particular label you like, check out flash sale sites such as Gilt, or try outlets and their websites, such as Barney’s Warehouse, OFF 5TH, Last Call, or Nordstrom Rack.

This is just plain wrong. Having style is about finding what looks best on you and what your personal preferences are. In fact, classic menswear often looks more stylish than seasonal trends do. The key is to create a signature look that you feel confident in. If you love bow ties, wear one every day. If you want to wear a blazer over everything from T-shirts to dress shirts, make that your thing. You don’t have to wear the latest and greatest in order to stand out.

f you aren’t the kind of man who is good at choosing wardrobe options for himself, you should consider using a stylist either in person or online. Whether you need casual clothes, formal wear, or something in between, a professional stylist can help you discover what looks best on you and how to coordinate everything with your current wardrobe. Trunk Club and Bonobos have retail locations where you can schedule an appointment with a stylist. If meeting with an actual person just isn’t for you, Trunk Club has online stylists. You can also try services like Bomb Fell and The Mr. Collection.

No. 2

You have to buy expensive clothes to look stylish This is so false. Stylish clothing comes in a range of prices. Even brands and stores that are known to sell higher priced items will generally offer some more affordable pieces each season. Additionally, there are a variety of brands that offer high style at a fair price, such as J.Crew and Frank & Oak. Fast fashion shops are also a great option to find trendy items you only want to wear for one season. Check out Forever 21, H&M, and Uniqlo.

No. 4

You are the same size in every brand Most men wish this was true, but standard sizing just doesn’t exist anymore. Every brand has its own sizing, but even that can vary from item to item. You could be a medium and a large within the same label. Certain brands are even vanity sized, so a size 36 might really have waistline of 38 inches. Buy everything based on fit, not on size.

The Key Habits of Highly Stylish People

72

A

Anyone with a credit card can stroll into Barneys and emerge looking like Fashion with a capital F— but that’s not necessarily what truly stylish people do. Very few people—credit cards or not—can be considered humans of genuine style. Yes, draping yourself in the coolest labels and piling on “It” items might give you a boost of instant sartorial gratification, but in six months those pieces will be obsolete, you’ll be out a month’s rent, and you’ll feel compelled to keep up with the cycle of buying the next round of coveted pieces. It’s exhausting. Still, so many Men seem to be falling victim to that exact cycle.

Understand labels don’t make you cooler

Blame it on today’s street style-obsessed world, but all we have to do today is take a quick peek at Pinterest, give Instagram a quick scroll, or visit any one of the gazillion personal style blogs that exist, and we’ll be inundated with up-to-the-minute images of what's hot and not. And that, in turn, can result in scores of young Men looking, well, exactly like everyone else and going broke in the process. Then, however, there are those images you’ll see on blogs or street style sites of young Men who look so amazingly chic, cool, or interesting who aren’t covered in head-to-toe labels, but rather know how to take nondescript pieces and style them in such a way that their whole look is completely enviable and covetable. These, friends, are the truly stylish Gentlemen from whom we should aim to take our fashion inspiration. To that end, we’ve compiled the 8 habits of highly stylish people to get you started.

1 2

Don’t surf street style blogs and copy exactly what you see.

3

Know how to style yourself according to your own taste.

4

Don’t be afraid to shop in a variety of store- take a little bit of extra time and you can find something almost anywhere.

6 7 8

Don’t be a slave to fashion Dress to be considered stylish. Have fun with your style

Try to look a little less “done” than everyone else.

Moors and Ottomans, Sicilians, French and British have competed for dominance.
