Geography

7

Boracay is in the province Manila of Aklan, located in Panay. This is the center of the Philippines Boracay Island Philippines. These central islands are the Visayas, region 6. Caticlan With 18,058 local residents, Panay the Island of Boracay is Island 1006 hectares and shaped like a dog bone. It is about 7 km long, and 1 km wide at it’s narrowest. White Beach and Bulabog beach are the primary and s e c o n d a r y tourism beaches, both located opposite of each other. Boracay is located 2km from Caticlan, the mainland gateway for sea and air access to Boracay. There are ports both in the south of Boracay, Cagban Port and Tambisaan port (only used in Habagat season) as well as in Caticlan (Jetty Port) to ferry passengers across the Tabon Strait. Boracay is separated into three districts; Yapak in the North, ManocManoc in the South and Balabag in the center. It is common to use the boat stations of White Beach for reference to a location. Boat Station 1 in the north, Boat Station 2 in the center, and Boat Station 3 in the south. Boracay has 12 beaches. White Beach is the most famous with most of Boracay’s establishments lined along the 4km long beach and footpath. Bulabog Beach, directly opposite, is the secondary water sports beach which is protected by a great reef. There is also the beautiful and undeveloped Puka Shell Beach in the north. The remaining other beaches are either deserted, remote, or have private resorts and villas. You can access nearly all beaches by a series of paved or gravel roads, or by sea.

Weather

Amihan - High Season (November to March) 25-32°C (77-90°F) Cool at night and warm day time, moderate rain, northeasterly to easterly winds Summer (April / May / June) 28-38°C (82-100°F) Hot and mostly dry, sometimes easterly to southeasterly trade winds. Habagat - Low Season (May/June to September/October) 25-32°C (77-90°F) Winds from the southwest, moderate to heavy rainfall, humid

Tourist Season

The Low Season is when the winds blow “westward” into White Beach. There is more rain than usual, but there are also fewer tourists, better prices on accommodations, and other lower prices on goods and services. The low season begins in June, and ends in October. During High Season, the winds come from the east side of the island, and White Beach is protected. The wind blows out to sea, leaving the beach pristinely clean and generally calm. It is winter in the northern hemisphere, and tourists come in numbers seeking sun, heat, beach and party. High Season starts in October and ends in May. The Peak Season is when tourism is at its height. This includes Christmas, New Year, Chinese New Year, and Holy Week (Easter Week). Some resorts have a +10% to +25% premium on their rooms, and the island gets fully booked. Make sure you book as far in advance as possible.

Getting Here By Air:

Caticlan is a small airport 20 minutes from Boracay. There are domestic flights from Manila, Cebu and Clark. A motorized trike will take you to the Jetty Port, less than five minutes away. This is definitely the preferred airport for ease and convenience. Due to the small size of the runway, smaller turboprop airplanes are used. Kalibo Airport is a larger airport 90 minutes from Boracay. There are some international flights and it can accommodate larger jet airplanes.

By Land and Sea:

A new cruise line named 2GO has recently started transporting guests twice a day between Caticlan Port and Batangas. It takes about 9 hours and they have multiple options for all budgets. You can take a bus or charter a van from Manila to the port which takes about 2 hours. The Strong Nautical Highway is a both an overland route and a series of Roll-on/ Caticlan to Boracay Roll-off ferries. The trip is 12-16 hours Helicopter transfer see page 144 with stopovers and dependant on sea conditions. It’s locally known as the RORO Private plane charters see page 145 Boracay route. 2 Caticlan

Jetty Port Caticlan Airport

1. Caticlan Airport to Caticlan Port – After getting out of the small airport, there will be a lineup of Motor Tricycles. The ride costs 50 PhP per trike for the five-minute trip to the port. 2. Caticlan Port to Boracay Port – The Jetty Port has Bangka pump boats that ferry between the Caticlan mainland and Boracay Island from Sunrise to Sunset. There are sometimes ferries after dark, but not reliably so. The Bangka trip is 25 PhP, however non-residents also pay a 75 PhP environmental fee, and a 75 PhP Terminal fee. You need to get these tickets outside the Jetty Port before you enter. The trip from the mainland to the island is about 15 minutes. If you have heavy luggage, there are porters to assist you at 20 PhP per item tip. Depending on the season, you will arrive at one of two Boracay Ports – Cagban Port in the High Season and Tambisaan Port in the Low Season. 3. Boracay Port to White Beach – The distance from either port to White Beach is about 10 minutes. There will be a long line of motortrikes to take you from the port to White Beach. This trip is 150 PhP per motortrike. 4. White Beach – The Motortrikes cannot go right down to the beach and will leave you on the Main Road next to a path that leads down to White Beach. The larger paths have pedal trikes that can take you down to your resort, or you can walk the five minutes. The Motortrike drivers should know the right place to drop you off.

Getting Around Most visitors to Boracay stay on or near White Beach so it is convenient to travel by foot. It’s about an hour walk from one end of the beach to the other. Motor vehicles are not allowed on the footpath and beach. There are motorbikes with sidecars on the main road running parallel to White Beach. The fare between boat stations is 10 PhP. You can also hire a trike driver to take you around the island for 150PhP/Hour. This is a good way to visit other beaches such as Puka Shell Beach, or the highest point on Boracay, Mt. Luho View Point. You can also rent bicycles from Patio Pacific and vendors on White Beach for around 200 PhP per hour. Wear a helmet and go slow. You can also hop around to the island’s remote beaches (Island Hopping) by Paraw, native canoe type sailboat. They are all over White Beach and should be around 1000 PhP per hour with crew. Popular trips are to Puka Shell Beach, up and down White Beach, sunset sails, and around the Island (weather permitting). There are also ATVs and off road buggies available for rent on the main road past station one.

12

Money

The currency is the Philippine Peso (PhP). Bill denominations are: 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1,000 pesos. If possible, bring your cash in 500 PhP denominations as you will find that getting change for 1000 peso bill can be difficult at times. ATMs dispense in 500 and 1,000 PhP bills. There are ATMs on White Beach, at D’Mall, and on the main road that will accept foreign debit/bank cards. During high and peak season the ATM’s tend to run out of cash and are not refilled till the next business day, so take out money early in the day and before the weekend. Foreign Currency is best exchanged at the banks or money changing stores. Only the larger restaurants and hotels accept credit cards including MasterCard, Visa and American Express. Personal checks are generally not accepted. Traveler’s checks get a lower exchange rate and should be changed at Allied Bank or the Boracay Tourist center. The Tourist Center will also give cash advances on credit cards (7%+ fee), and safe deposit boxes are available for rent.

Communication Boracay Island is serviced by two mobile providers, SMART, SUN CELLULAR and GLOBE. They have good reception through most of the island. Visitors can purchase a SIM card with phone number for 65 PhP and then purchase loads (user minutes) in amounts as low as 10 pesos. Text messages are definitely the main form of local communication at a cost of 1 peso per text. (The Philippines is the text message capital of the world). Talk time is more expensive between 6 to 8 pesos per minute. International text messages are quite affordable (most countries 20 PhP).

13

Landline calls are cheaper, and best for international calls. There are several International Phone booths along the White Beach footpath and in D’Mall. Some resorts also have international phone service, but generally at higher rates. Philippine country code is +63. Boracay’s area code is (036). My Boracay Guide’s phone number calling from overseas would be +63 36 288-9999. Boracay has several internet cafes along White Beach, at the Tourist Center, and in D’Mall. Half hour is 25-35 PhP, one hour is 50-70 PhP. Connections are not very fast, but sufficient to email home. There is a private post office in the Tourist Center opens at 9am-10pm daily and on holidays. There is one LBC branch in station 3 on the main road along with a new branch next to Budget Mart. There are two local newspapers that cover many of the events and happenings on the island called the “Boracay Sun” and “Boracay Informer”. You can find this at many of the popular establishments on the island. There are three major FM Radio Stations, Yes FM 91.1, Easy Rock 93.5 and Radio Boracay 106.1.

Visa Extensions The Bureau of Immigration (BOI) can extend visitor visas as well as process other changes required in visa status. For visa extensions you will be required to make photocopies of your passport and fill out a visa application form. The cost varies depending on your visa and desired length of stay. You can expect to pay 3,030.00 PhP for 38-day extension. Please extend 1-2 weeks before visa expires to avoid penalty. There is a dress code so don’t wear board shorts or tank tops. They are located on the main road next to Nirvana Resort, open Mondays to Friday from 8am to 12 noon and 1pm to 5:30pm. There is also a branch in Kalibo near the airport next to Saylo Restaurant. For more information call 288-5267 (Boracay) 500-7601 (Kalibo).

Hotels & Resorts White Beach, Boat Station 1 White Beach, Boat Station 1 is the North section of White Beach that is home to some of the top luxury resorts on Boracay. Almost all the resorts are directly on the beach, and offer most in-house services that you would expect from high end resorts. The footpath ends, and you must walk directly down the beach to arrive at the central action of Station 2.

White Beach, Boat Station 2 Boat Station 2 is the restaurant, shopping, and entertainment heart of White Beach. Here you can find some of the high-end resorts, and many of the popular pubs and bars. D’Mall is also here, a collection of 100 small tourist shops and restaurants that stretch all the way to the main road.

White Beach, Boat Station 3 White Beach, Boat Station 3 was the last section of White Beach to be developed. Most of the remaining White Beach budget and native style bungalows are located here, although recently more upscale resorts and services have been developed to take advantage of this more relaxed atmosphere. It is the quietest part of White Beach.

Bulabog Beach Bulabog Beach is the 2.5km long water sports beach of Boracay, and is located on the east side of the island. It is home for much of the windsurfing and kite boarding and also has jet skis, parasailing and boating of all types during habagat season. It is a 5 minute walk to D’Mall, 10 minutes to White Beach. There are some resorts here as well. The beach is protected by an offshore coral reef. “Number One kite boarding beach in Asia.”

Off White Beach Off White Beach there are various other accommodations, including some of the top luxury resorts nestled away in private, if you are looking to stay away from the hustle and bustle of White Beach.

Shopping White Beach

resorts

After a delicious meal why not work off the calories with a bit of shopping. Take the time to walk white beach end to end to find some of the unique shops Boracay has to offer. As you leisurely stroll white beach you will be approached by men from the Muslim Vendors Association selling sunglasses, pearls, model sailboats, fake watches, belts and numerous other trinkets. There are a few stalls offering made to order bracelets customized with your name or whatever wording you decide upon. There will also be other people with laminated cue cards selling scuba diving, water sports, sailboat adventures and other activities. There are other services you will be offered as you enjoy your walk such as pedicures and manicures, beach side massages, henna tattoos, and hair braiding. Sometimes it can get frustrating hearing the same sales pitch over and over again, but just smile and shake your head‌ relax you are on vacation.

There are also cell phone repair vendors, souvenir shops and some budget friendly hotels and restaurants. Find everything you want and more at D’Mall, located in Balabag (station 2).

D’Talipapa This “small market place” is by no means small as suggested by its Tagalog name. With numerous alleyways you can maneuver around for an afternoon of shopping for all the souvenirs you can carry. There are vendors selling fresh veggies, fruits, meat and seafood for you to cook up yourself as well as many of the restaurants in the marketplace will cook to your pallets content. Depth: 18m- 30m Experience Level: Advanced This wreck was sunk in 2001 by the Boracay Diving association. Over the years the wreck has become home to Jacks, Sea Bass, Grouper, Surgeon fish, and Tangs. Just off the wreck you can find pygmy Sea horses and the very rare ghost pipe fish. Since the wreck was deliberately sunk, it has been cleaned of toxic chemicals and wires that would tangle a diver, it also has wide swim thru’s extending throughout most of the length of the ship. 3

Site: Crocodile Island

Over half a hectare of rainbow colored soft and hard corals, table corals, anemone’s define this spectacular site. Trumpet fish, fusiliers, garden eels and triton trigger fish can also be found here. Below the soft corals is a 10 meter high wall where small caves, sea fans and whip corals can be found.
