Delaney’s Hitting Wickets!
Year 12 student and School Captain Delaney Laffy has had a dream run so far this year playing cricket. Delaney, who currently plays A Grade in the women’s league and C grade in the men’s league for Echuca Cricket Club, was selected for the NSW CIS Secondary Open Girls Cricket with 12 other students from across the state, after trying out in Sydney in February. Picked as an emergency, Delaney was not sure that she’d get out on the field. When she got called up to play in the tournament in Barooga, she was thrilled.
Delaney is a pace bowler, and she gave it all she had against the NSW combined high schools’ and Catholic schools’ teams during the tournament from 28 February to 2 March. The vast majority of players came from Sydney, with Delaney being one of the few from a rural area.

Delaney’s team blitzed the competition, winning each match and emerging undefeated. To top it off, Delaney was named Player of the Tournament after her impressive bowling performance. Finishing the carnival with 11 wickets at an impressive average of just 4.5, Delaney was undoubtedly the stand-out of the competition.
Delaney only started playing cricket at age 11, but she’s now been selected for the NSW All Schools Team (made up of the best players from the carnival) and will play in Coolangatta, Queensland in September.
What an outstanding achievement – congratulations, Delaney!
