technology Artificial intelligence and the future of the independent agent

w

hat would you say is the most prominent theme throughout human history? Most people argue that conflict or culture defines humanity. Still, when we examine the entirety of human existence, we see one central point that outshines the rest: advancement. Each age of humanity has been defined by an innovation that changed the course of history forever. Whether it be the wheel, the invention of steel or the internet, humans seem determined never to settle for their current reality and are always rushing toward that next defining moment. We believe that the next defining moment is already here, and it has come in the form of artificial intelligence (AI). The floodgates are open, and in as little as five years from now AI will likely have significantly altered how we live and work. So what does this mean for insurance agents? Well, if history has taught us anything it is that those who properly implement innovative technologies are rewarded, and those that don’t either fade into obscurity or serve as a cautionary tale for why you shouldn’t blindly charge forward into uncharted territory. In this article, we explore how the emergence of AI could impact independent insurance agents and make the case for why agents should work to carefully implement this technology into their agencies’ operations.

First things first

The burning question that professionals of all stripes are asking themselves is “Can AI do my job better than I can and will it make my role obsolete?” Insurance agents are not immune to this line of thinking, but thankfully it is unreasonable to assume that machines will eliminate the need for human agents. Most consumers are not experts on the different types of coverages available and defer to the expertise of an insurance agent when navigating the buying process. While AI tools such as ChatGPT do a great job scouring the internet and organizing information to

nov-dec2023

answer a question, purchasing insurance requires trust, and consumers trust that their agent is qualified and capable of advising them on their potential risks and securing the right coverage for their needs. That level of trust is not easily transferable to an artificial machine (do you prefer navigating an automated customer service menu or speaking with a live person?), especially considering the nuance required to properly advise and service a client. As such, it is highly unlikely that consumers would ever prefer their risk profile to be assessed and managed by a programmable machine instead of a real person. No one knows what the future holds, but we firmly believe that no matter how sophisticated AI becomes, it can never replicate the interpersonal value and expertise provided by agents.

BondExchange Catalyit.com

On the bright side

With that being said, AI can potentially eliminate the need for agents to perform repetitive and mundane tasks and empower them to focus on where they provide the most value: advising and servicing their clients. How will it do this? Let’s take a look:

Customer service

The use of AI chatbots to answer basic customer questions is an increasingly popular feature that more and more companies are utilizing. These chatbots help companies stay connected to consumers and are especially useful outside normal business hours. For example, imagine a customer needing information about your agency’s renewal process after you’ve locked up shop for the day and your customer service team has gone home. Featuring an AI chatbot on your website that is capable of answering this customer’s questions will add value to your customer and in turn strengthen their loyalty to your agency. Even today, using AI to enhance your level of customer service can reduce service costs by up to 30%, according continued on page 25

Missouri Department of Commerce & Insurance

very October, the Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance (DCI) joins nearly 2 million people in the 14 central U.S. states that a New Madrid Seismic Zone earthquake could impact to participate in an earthquake drill known as the Great Central U.S. ShakeOut. The New Madrid Seismic Zone is one of the most active seismic areas in the United States, averaging 200 small earthquakes annually. In 2022, 153 earthquakes occurred in Missouri. In 1811 and 1812, this zone produced some of the largest earthquakes in U.S. history. Another major earthquake in this area would be felt not only in Missouri but throughout the Midwest and would damage buildings and infrastructure in much of southern and eastern Missouri, including the St. Louis area. Geologists say there’s a 25% to 40% chance of another large earthquake occurring in the next 50 years. Experts say DROP, COVER, HOLD ON is the best protection from falling debris, which is the most likely cause of injury during an earthquake. Drill participants practiced this technique at 10:19 a.m. on October 19. If you experience a real earthquake in the future, remember these three simple steps: • DROP to your hands and knees; • COVER your head and neck with your hands and arms under a table or desk if you can; and • HOLD ON until the shaking stops. Like any other disaster, planning before an earthquake can help minimize some of the burdens an emergency brings. A discussion with family or friends is a great way to review your emergency plan and confirm you have properly secured items in your household. Missourians are also encouraged to consider earthquake coverage since it is not included in most standard homeowners or renters policies.

Despite the ongoing threat of earthquakes, a substantial and growing gap of earthquake insurance coverage protection exists in the area. DCI’s Insurance Market Regulation Division produces an annual report of residential insurance coverage in Missouri. The most recent data from 2022 shows earthquake coverage in a six-county section of southeast Missouri has dramatically decreased, falling by over 49% between 2000 and 2020, from 60.2% to now only 10.9%. The cost of earthquake coverage has also increased significantly, particularly in the highrisk area of the New Madrid Seismic Zone. Since 2015, costs have increased nearly 60% in the New Madrid counties. Since 2000, costs have increased by 891%. Although one of the likely culprits of the continuing decline is the sharply escalating cost of earthquake insurance in the region, a recent study conducted by the DCI, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), and the University of Missouri’s Disaster and Community Crisis Center found these to be the top three predictors of uptake in earthquake insurance: • Using agents to help make insurance decisions • Talking to friends and family about earthquakes • Confidence in having sufficient information about earthquakes The NAIC is hosting the second annual Central U.S. Quake Summit from November 13-14 at the Crowne Plaza in St. Louis to bring together leading voices in the insurance industry, regulatory industry, and government to focus on what needs to be done to “close the gap” on earthquake insurance coverage in the New Madrid Seismic Zone. Register to attend this event by using the QR code above. DCI is charged with protecting Missouri consumers through oversight of the insurance industry, banks, credit unions, utilities and various professional licensees operating in the state. For more information about the department, please visit our website at dci.mo.gov.

he insurance industry is one of those careers that, for many people, is something they fall into; it isn’t really something they planned on. For some, like me, it is something I grew up in. While I sure learned a lot about the industry around the dinner table, riding in a car to appointments and other countless times that a family trip included a stop for the business, insurance was probably the last career choice I had in mind, that is until a switch flipped. That was around my junior year in college. Long story short, I ended up with a degree in insurance and risk management. I don’t recall exactly how many students were in that department, but it wasn’t many. There were two professors and most core classes in the major were only offered one semester a year. Needless to say, it was one of the smaller departments in the school of business at Southwest Missouri State University (that now dates me a bit), and you didn’t exactly perk other students’ ears up at a party when you said you were an insurance major! Straight out of college I worked in the catastrophe claims department for a very large national carrier. During that time, I was a desk adjuster, field adjuster and trainer over said

department. In those five years, I only met one other person with an insurance degree, although I had met hundreds if not over a thousand different employees of that company during that time. My involvement with MAIA didn’t start until after joining and purchasing my family agency. The agency had been around for about 20 years, but it wasn’t until I joined the folks at Valley Insurance Agency Alliance that I learned about MAIA. After my first conference, I was hooked. While it was great meeting with carriers, vendors, etc., it was the camaraderie that made me crave more. I immediately joined up to volunteer with the Young Agents Committee. Through my ongoing work with the committee, I learned about how MAIA is trying to get more people involved, especially newer agents and even college students looking for a career in the industry. Like many things in life, you get back what you put in. I would challenge anyone, from a new agent to a seasoned veteran, to find a spot to help within MAIA. Volunteer to work on a committee, to help staff a desk at an event, etc. I myself look forward to what the future holds for me within MAIA.

member Recycling is great. Not for passwords.

t

hese days we’re all overloaded with the number of accounts that require credentials, and remembering them is impossible. Using the same password for different accounts is tempting—like having one handy key that opens every lock you use. But reusing passwords is not the solution. Compromised passwords are one of the leading causes of data breaches, and reusing passwords can increase the damage done by what would otherwise be a relatively small incident. Cybercriminals know that people reuse credentials and often test compromised passwords on commonly used sites in order to expand the number of accounts they can access. For instance, if you use the same password for your work email as for Amazon or your gym membership (you know, the one you registered for right after New Year’s), a breach at one of those companies puts your work emails at risk. Reusing credentials is like giving away copies of the key that opens all your locks. You’re putting all of your data in the hands of the company with the weakest cyber security. Before reusing a password for different accounts, especially across work and personal ones, think of all the data that someone could get into if they got that credential. Here are some tips to help you avoid falling in this trap: • Use completely separate passwords for work and personal accounts.

Theresa Flippin

22

missouriagent

• Avoid words that can easily be guessed by attackers, like “password” or “September2017,” or predictable keyboard combinations like “1234567,” “qwerty,” or “1q2w3e4r5t.” • Longer is stronger. Use passphrases rather than passwords. Passphrases could include several random words like “Highway owl purple elephant” or could be taken from favorite song lyrics or books. • Add some complexity with capitalization or special characters if required. “Fido!sAnAwesomeDog” is a stronger password than your pet’s name. • Just adding numbers or special characters at the end of a word doesn’t increase security much, because they’re easy for software to guess. • Avoid words like your kids’ names that could easily be guessed by coworkers or revealed by a few minutes of online research. • Answers to security questions are often easily found— your mother’s maiden name is public record—so pick another word for whenever that question comes up.

Cyber liability with Beazley Beazley offers comprehensive cyber coverage exclusively to MAIA members through a pre-rated program. If you qualify for the program, you will find significantly lower rates than other carriers, with very comparable high limit options. Beazley consistently remains in the top 10 cyber carriers. associated with changes to the overtime pay regulations, and such changes would only exacerbate the difficulties businesses are currently facing. workers for their skill and time. But we would propose a measured approach to increases in wages, as opposed to stark increases that would cause disruption to an already fragile economic stability. In yet another example of the federal government knowing what’s best for both citizens and businesses, some lawmakers are determined to pass data privacy legislation that would preempt state laws relating to the same and impose unclear and unworkable requirements upon insurance agents. Obviously, we as insurance professionals have a duty and requirement to take all precautions necessary to protect consumer information, considering insurance entities are prime targets for individual who would seek to obtain and use such information for nefarious purposes. However, this federal proposal is not the way to do that. We have concerns about this legislation and cannot support it in its current form for three primary reasons: 1) the bill would impose potentially unworkable requirements on insurance agencies, 2) this bill would effectively fully preempt state insurance regulation in the context of GLBA, and 3) it would require state insurance regulatory systems to enforce inappropriate federal regulations against state insurance licensees. Certainly, over the course of time, governments, both federal and state, have implemented valuable protections for us as citizens, consumers and business owners. But weeding through those proposals that seem to provide no valid protections and at worst actually threaten our livelihood, is yeoman’s work. If you’re not already involved in protecting your industry, what are you waiting for?

technology

continued from page 15

to Entrepreneur. Imagine what that number will be 10 years from now as AI continues to advance. Additionally, companies such as Synthesia allow users to create AI videos that could potentially be used for employee training or continuing education purposes. It is important to note that AI chatbots are best used in tandem with your customer support team and should primarily be utilized when your team is unavailable (holidays, weekends, non-business hours, etc.) or as a fast reference for your team members when issues arise outside of their circle of competence. In our opinion, having a live person responding to customer inquiries is the preferred method (especially since being an insurance agent is a service-driven role), but when a live person is not available an AI chatbot can provide an acceptable level of support in the interim and is certainly better than no support. Remember, AI should not replace your customer service staff but instead work in tandem with them to increase the amount of value your agency can provide to your customers.

Underwriting

AI and machine learning (ML) technologies are already transforming the underwriting process by improving data collection and risk assessment methods. For example, instead of relying on potentially inaccurate data provided by customers on an application, insurance companies are beginning to utilize technology that can automatically gather data through many different sources and more accurately discern the level of risk present in each policy. According to management consultancy McKinsey and Company, by 2030 underwriting processes will be almost entirely handled by machines and most policies will be quoted instantaneously. This removes the need for underwriters to handle repetitive tasks such as data entry and allows them to focus their energy on handling complex submissions. These innovations will be groundbreaking for carriers and brokers. However, independent agents stand to benefit as their customers receive increasingly accurate and error-free assessments of their

nov-dec2023

risk profiles and instant quotes on most policies, allowing agents to focus on other value-add items such as product education and customer retention.

Claims

Claims processing can be a tedious task that requires hours of investigative work and the examination of countless documents. McKinsey and Company estimates that by 2030, AI and ML will play a significant role in the claims process with nearly half of all claims being fully processed without human oversight or intervention (Lemonade already handles half of their claims via AI and recently set a world record for processing a claim in just two seconds). What does this mean for agents? Well, less time focusing on data collection and information sharing with carriers and more time providing support and counsel to their customers. AI will never be able to match the interpersonal touch of a live agent, and using AI and ML to eliminate tasks such as data collection and information sharing allows agents to focus their efforts on ensuring their customers have the guidance needed to properly file their claims.

A pivotal moment

AI has already proven itself capable of enhancing customer support, underwriting, and claims processes. The technology is here to stay and will only become more prevalent over time. The way we see it, insurance agents have three options for how to respond: • Reject its implementation and become the equivalent of an agency still using a typewriter in 2010. • Rush to implement the technology without cause or consideration and watch it blow up in your face. • Identify the areas where AI can increase efficiencies and cut costs and meticulously implement the technology over time. The key to mastering the age of AI is to choose option three. If you don’t, you may be overtaken by competitors that are more efficient and provide more value to their customers.

the E&O Guardian website. Remember that documentation is key to your defense should an E&O claim develop. Three things you should not do during these times: • DO NOT offer to pay any outstanding (or new) claims for your clients. • DO NOT offer to refund unearned premium if their policy is cancelled mid-term. • DO NOT rely on the rehabilitator/receiver to contact your clients on your behalf. Communication with your clients about any changes in their carriers is key to strong client relations. missourinews MAIA presented PIA membership growth award MAIA was recognized with a membership growth award at the fall meeting of the National Association of Professional Insurance Agents last month. The award recognizes MAIA’s commitment to attracting Missouri agencies to the value and products that the association provides. MAIA has been awarded the award for three years in a row. If you are interested in learning more about the products and services that accompany MAIA membership, reach out to the association at maia@moagent.org to schedule some time to discuss.

MAIA education department receives an IIABA award The 2023 Excellence in Insurance Education (EIE) award recipients have been named and include 38 state associations. Missouri received a Gold level award. First presented back in 2010, the EIE award is not a competition but rather a points-based system designed to recognize and honor state associations and staff who, through a variety of traditional and cutting-edge professional development programs, have made significant contributions to insurance education. Recipients of this award have proven their dedication to promoting quality insurance education year after year, and the Big “I" Agent Development department is proud to honor them for their accomplishments.

Retiring committee chairs We would like to thank the following members who have served their terms as chairs to MAIA committees and will be retiring from that role this year. • Colt Atwood, Young Agents Committee – served as chair for one year • Nick Brenizer, Education Committee – served as chair for three years • Tim Wahl, Coverage Advisory Committee – served as chair for eight years

Tim Wahl receives MAIC Agent of Change award Tim Wahl, of Gallaher Insurance Group, was presented with an “Agent of Change” award at the Mid-America Insurance Conference (MAIC) for his work in shepherding a needed change to the ISO Form CR 20 27 which allows for the scheduling of varying deductibles for a commercial crime policy. While Wahl proposed the change years ago during a previous conference, his dogged work and determination to get the form approved for use by ISO (Insurance Services Office) kept the issue alive until it made it across the finish line. This form is now available for use by insurance carriers that utilize ISO forms.

Utica presented PIA Award of Excellence Utica Mutual Insurance Company, headquartered in New Hartford, New York, was recently awarded the PIA National Company Award of Excellence. The award honors an insurance company that demonstrates a commitment to the American Agency System and seeks to further the interests of professional, independent insurance agents by creating a better business environment. Formed in 1974, InsurPac, the Big I’s federal political action committee (PAC) is one of the largest small business PACs in the country and the most recognized PAC in the insurance industry.

InsurPac allows our federal lobbyists to consistently attend fundraising events on Capitol Hill. At each of these events they develop relationships with members of Congress and their staffs.

Those relationships help open doors to advocate for or against legislation that directly impacts the IA system.
