Apple Harvest (965-09-13-13)

Suggested ages: 1st-6th grade Friday, September 13, 2013, 1:15 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. Horticulture Research Center Tour the Birthplace of the Honeycrisp Apple and find out how University of Minnesota Scientists are growing better apples for Minnesota. Tour the orchard to see the trees and learn about apple breeding research and Integrated Pest Management (IPM). In the apple room, we will conduct a scientific taste test and find out about bees important role in apple production. In the cider shed we will make and taste fresh pressed apple cider. $8 member/$10 non-member, includes adult admission for home school educator and all materials. Siblings are welcome but all participating siblings should be registered.

Get to know Minnesota trees, how they grow, and their importance to people and wildlife. Find out how scientists classify trees and practice identification in the Woodland Wildflower garden using a scientific key. Do a real life tree math story problem that looks at how trees grow. Learn some simple methods for estimating the height of a tree, and tour the Pillsbury Shade Tree exhibit to compare the qualities of many different shade trees. $8 member/$10 non-member, includes adult admission for home school educator and all materials. Siblings are welcome but all participating siblings should be registered.

Hey, isn’t that a life cycle ripening in the garden? Play Life Cycle Bing and search for plants in all stages of their lives. Start a pumpkin seed investigation. Compare the insides of pumpkins and their relatives. Estimate a giant pumpkin’s weight and see the amazing diversity of the pumpkin family. $8 member/$10 non-member, includes adult admission for home school educator and all materials.
