Mountains of food, sports fans galore, friends, family, music and (hopefully) warm weather: the perfect combination for tailgating. “You can tailgate at baseball, football and NASCAR, though it gets a bit cold in hockey season,” said Ray Gross of Hellam Township. A Pittsburgh fan, he’s been tailgating since he was in college. “You can either go all out with a grill, tables, chairs, canopies, or you can just throw open your hatch-back and spread out a blanket,” said Kathy Eby, a Penn State tailgater from Lancaster.

Some people arrive with the sunrise, others late morning, but most spend the majority of the day in the parking lot and at the game. “If you want a good spot, you’ll have to get there very early,” Gross said. He usually tries to arrive about 7:30 a.m. Once, he showed up after 8 a.m. and had to park more than 2 miles from the stadium. The important things are that there’s lots of food and lots of fun. “Mostly we walk around, talk to people, look at all the things going on
