Pat’s Corner Q: What is the best padding to be used under my carpets? A: For carpet that is being stretched-in wall to wall, the wisest choice would be to purchase a 7/16” rebonded padding. Our rebonded padding is not recycled, but is composed of pressed trimmings of cushion generated by the flooring, furniture, and automotive industries. A six pound density or higher padding complies with the carpet manufacturers warranties. If you have any questions for Pat, send him an email at: patrick@embeeandson.com Your question may be published in the next issue of “Pat’s Corner.”

I’m not crafty. I don’t bead, sew or knit. And my scrapbooking took an indefinite hiatus after I had my second child. But, after editing the story about crafty projects for kids on pages 24-27, I was inspired to try one with my 5-year-old daughter, Mara. I chose what I thought would be easiest: the shaving-cream snowman. All I needed was shaving cream, white glue, construction paper and some doodads that I could scrounge up from around the house. I didn’t have white glue, so I sent my husband, Mark, to buy some. While he was out, Mara and I searched her room for scrap paper and fun baubles to decorate our snowman. We dug through school papers and drawers, and I discovered a happy side effect to crafting: cleaning and organizing Mara’s room. After Mark returned with the glue and offered up his shaving cream, we began to craft. All was well until Charlie, who is 9 months old, distracted me for a few minutes, leaving Mara unattended with the glue-and-shaving-cream mixture. The mess could’ve been bigger, but the result didn’t really resemble a snowman.

blooms Love

Keep your flowers fresh longer By JEN BAKER for Smart

A beautiful floral arrangement has the power to make us feel loved and cared for. You can extend that warm, fuzzy feeling — and the life of your flowers — by following a few simple steps.

ydr.com/smart | 9

Florist Marcy Almoney arranges flowers for a wedding in her Springettsbury Township workspace. Her trick for keeping flowers fresh longer is to mix a tiny bit of bleach and some 7Up in the flowers’ water. PHOTOS BY KATE PENN for Smart

Most flowers can last four to seven days, or longer with the proper care. Bouquets typically come with a packet of flower food, and it’s beneficial to the life of the bouquet to mix it according to the instructions. “The packet that comes with it is basically a sugar solution and a bleaching solution,” said Marcy Almoney of Foster’s Flower Shop in Springettsbury Township. “If you don’t have a packet, a little bit of bleach, not even a half-capful per gallon, and some 7Up in the water will do the same job.” How the flowers are cared for before delivery is equally important. For example, Olp’s Flower Shop in Jacobus uses two different preservatives (one in the water and one that is sprayed on) for its arrangements, with positive results from customers. “We’ve been told they can last up to three weeks,” Sue Olp said. If flowers are packaged in a container with floral foam, be sure to press on the foam daily to be sure it still is wet.

10 | smart

Add water if the foam starts to feel dry. Flowers in a vase should have all leaves removed below the waterline, and the water in the vase should be changed if it becomes cloudy. Almoney finds many people forget to change the water. “Change the water and cut the stems every few days,” she recommends. “That will help the longevity.” Lilac, quince, forsythia and other flowers with woody stems and branches should be placed in warm water and flower food to encourage flower opening. All flowers should be cut with a sharp knife or clippers to prevent the stems from being crushed. If possible, cut the stems under water to prevent them from drawing in air. Popular year-round, all-occasion flowers include carnations, daisies, Fuji mums, larkspur and sunflowers, while spring flowers, such as tulips, iris and daffodils, are available as early as Valentine’s Day. “Spring flowers don’t always last as long,” Olp warned.

Roses also are a great year-round choice and, of course, are popular for Valentine’s Day. Roses typically last six to 10 days, but it might be possible to revive them if they start to wilt. Try placing the rose horizontally in a sink filled with warm water and cut about 1 inch off the stem while it’s under the water. Leave the rose in the water for a few hours and allow the water to cool. Just keep in mind that if the rose is beyond its vase life, this trick won’t work. No matter what type of arrangement you have, your flowers will last longer away from hot or cold drafts and out of direct sunlight. This includes keeping them off televisions, appliances and heating/cooling units. “Be sure to keep them out of the sun,” Almoney said. Olp offers the most basic piece of advice to keep your flowers fresh longer: “Keep them cool and keep them watered.”

Care tips for fresh flowers

1

Re-cut the stems before arranging the flowers in a vase. Use a clean vase to avoid bacteria growth.

2

Remove any leaves that will be below the waterline. Leaves in water will promote bacteria growth.

3 4 5

Keep the vase filled with warm water mixed with flower food.

Keep flowers away from direct sunlight, vents or on top of televisions or radiators. Do not place directly under ceiling fans.

Tips to care for flowers you received as gifts

Cyclamen: Needs 1 to 4 hours of bright, indirect light. Allow soil to become slightly dry before evenly watering. Blooms in winter.

Find something unique for each room of your home.

Poinsettia: Keep it near sunlight to keep the flowers going. It does well with several hours of bright light each day. Don’t allow it to sit in water. Your destination for all of your home decor and gift-giving needs!

Give your hardware some TLC

Mice

• Can be cleaned with a damp cloth and/or can of pressurized air to get in the cracks.

How-tos for cleaning your high-tech hardware By HOLLY WHITE for Smart

Most of us own hardware – stereos, computer monitors, laptops and cell phones. And, although we know we shouldn’t spill water on or eat around our gadgets, we probably could use more instruction on ways to keep each item looking like new.

What you need

• A damp (NOT wet) cloth, or microfiber dusting cloth. • A can of pressurized air • Spray cleaner • Razor blade (as needed for stickers) • Goo Gone (as needed for stickers) • Cotton swabs

A keyboard

• Use pressurized can of air to spray in between keys. • If you spill a beverage on an external keyboard, Austin Ginder of Anchor Development Corp. in Lancaster suggests putting the keyboard in the dishwasher. Unplug it first, then cover the USB port (use a plastic bag with taped ends to ensure no water gets in) and then wash in dishwasher. Soap is not needed. Be sure to remove from dishwasher before heated dry cycle. • After washing, let dry for two days after popping off keys using a quarter. Reassemble after the keyboard is completely dry. SMART Snap a photo of keyboard layout to get TIP the keys back on correctly after it’s clean.

12 | smart

SMART TIP Keyboards and mice are quite affordable, and it might be more worth it to just keep a backup on hand if one is damaged beyond repair.

What should I know about storing hightech hardware?

• Extreme temperatures will damage your hardware. For example, leaving a laptop in a car on a hot day could severely damage its functionality. • Keep location dry as well, moisture can corrode delicate parts, making connections less reliable and increasing the chance of device failure. • Provide air circulation if device is in use. There is not enough air circulation for most hardware units stored in a cabinet with closed doors — put more air holes in the back or sides of a cabinet and keep a door open to provide sufficient air flow. colormakeover Use updated palettes to transform a house into a home

BEFORE

By BARBARA JONES for Smart

Color is the most exciting element of design — not only because it can make the biggest impact, but because it’s the easiest to change. A weekend spent with a brush and a gallon of paint can enliven a staid living room, update a bathroom or bring tranquility to a bedroom. “A home isn’t just a house, it’s a place of comfort and feeling,” said Sara McLean, the color marketing manager for Dunn-Edwards Corp. “Color speaks to who you are, so you shouldn’t be afraid of it.” A veteran of studio design, McLean now tracks color trends as she develops consumer and trade-friendly tools for her Los Angeles-based company. Dunn-Edwards offers nearly 1,700 custom colors so the opportunities for creativity are virtually endless. McLean notes that some people choose a palette because it represents a connection to a personal experience, ethnic heritage or even a social cause. For others searching for inspiration, she suggests experimenting with a color wheel, an artist’s tool which shows the relationships among an array of hues. Then select analogous colors — those included within a pieshaped slice of the wheel — to create a monochromatic, sophisticated scheme; and complementary, or opposing shades to evoke energy and visual excitement. And if a budding decorator still is feeling overwhelmed, McLean advises turning to nature. “Look at a landscape, pick a bunch of flowers. Then take what you like, what makes you happy, and create a color scheme around it.” To help

guide that process, McLean relies on the so-called 60-30-10 rule. Very simply, 60 percent of the décor is your primary color, usually the walls; 30 percent is a secondary hue, which can be used for furniture, window or floor coverings, or a focal wall; and the remaining 10 percent is an accent color that can be carried out with striking accessories. Whatever, the hue, McLean adds, it’s very important to carry it throughout the house. “If red is a favorite color, use shots

of it in every room. It may be a throw pillow or the mat in a picture frame, but it should feel like it’s the same house,” she says. “Color is an important element that helps create a unified whole.” A member of the Color Marketing Group, which forecasts trends in the industry, McLean predicts that cream tones will face stiff competition from gray as the predominant neutral shade. Cool smoky pigments are coloring the walls in many contemporary homes, rich

If the weather is going to be cold, we might as well have snow. You might think snow has nothing to do with gardening — that once a white blanket drops over the landscape, all garden activity and thoughts of gardening cease. Not so.

Snowy benefits Snow is a terrific insulator, and the ground never freezes during winters when snow falls early and deep, and stays. Plant stems go dormant in fall, not to awaken until spring, but roots grow when temperatures are not too low, which might be the case under snow even in the dead of winter. Earthworms and soil microbes also work as long as the soil doesn’t get too cold. And a snowy blanket makes it easy to dig carrots, leeks, parsnips stored right where they grew. Snow also keeps perennials and newly planted trees firmly anchored in the ground. Winter winds can dry out the evergreen leaves of perennials such as coral bells and dianthus. Once dormant and nestled beneath a few inches or more of snow, these plants are kept quiet and moist.

Snow does bring some mischief. Lettuce tolerates temperatures below freezing just fine, but its leaves turn to mush when covered by that same moist blanket appreciated by coral bells and dianthus. Snow also exacerbates problems with animals. With less on which to nibble at ground level, deer turn their attention to fat buds on apple trees and crisp leaves on rhododendrons. Mice become free to scoot about within a snowy realm, protected from the searching, hungry eyes of hawks, cats and dogs. Given free rein, rodents will gnaw at young bark, even chomp on those tender carrots awaiting harvest from soft ground. A thick blanket of snow gives rabbits a leg up to reach branches they could not previously reach. When a foot and a half of snow falls, rabbits can chomp away on young stems that were more than 2 feet

off the ground in summer. Snow does bring one more potential problem with evergreens. These plants have a hard enough time drawing water from frozen soil. That trouble is compounded when sunlight reflected off snow sucks even more moisture from leaves. The best way to avoid this problem is by not planting evergreens, especially broadleaf ones, where a broad expanse of open land to the south can bounce reflected sunlight on them. And mulch them well with wood chips or straw before the ground freezes so it does not freeze so deeply (or hope for a deep, insulating blanket of snow).

As low as * per vehicle

Beautiful snow Mice, rabbits, deer and desiccating evergreens notwithstanding, isn’t a snowy winter landscape nice to look at? Take a hodgepodge of plants, paths and lawn and sitting areas, throw a snowy blanket down over everything, and what’s left is a harmony in white. Snow does drain what little color might be left in the winter landscape, yet more than mere whiteness remains. Line and form, then dominate. Patterns are created by dark lines of fencing and tree limbs, and by billowing mounds of dense twigs. Each fresh snowfall lends yet another dimension as snowflakes pile up on every horizontal surface. Upper sides of tree limbs become painted in craggy swaths of white. Straight, white swaths line fence rails, and each fence post gets capped with a dot of white. Whatever evergreen greenery remains is all the more appreciated.

Rachel Bontoyan of Shrewsbury Township looks at her baby’s ultrasound during her 11-week visit to Dr. Mary Keperling’s office in Shrewsbury.

FAMILY

Waiting for motherhood

As women get older, complications in pregnancy become more common By TERESA McMINN for Smart

Rachel Bontoyan faced a number of differences in her most recent pregnancy compared with when she was expecting her son, Brandon, six years ago. Bontoyan, 39, of Shrewsbury Township said although she doesn’t feel much older, she was tired through the first trimester of her pregnancy, possibly because she teaches high school, cares for her little boy and was helping her stepdaughter, Sara, 18, prepare for college. Bontoyan also said she worried about her pregnancy because she suffered a miscarriage about a year before. “I’m also a little stressed about ... being older,” she said.

Bontoyan’s doctor, Mary Keperling of the Women’s Health Center in Shrewsbury, said women older than 35 have a tougher time becoming pregnant. “The chances of getting pregnant start to decline after 32,” Keperling said in an e-mail. “This is a progressive process since women are born with a set number of eggs and these decrease over time. Men produce new sperm all the time,” she said. “The other factor with the limited egg supply is that the eggs that are most responsive ovulate when we are younger. The older ones don’t divide as well, and this is the reason that there is an increased risk of trisomies, Downs

syndrome and related problems increase with maternal age.” Bontoyan said she had a scare during her pregnancy, when doctors thought she was at-risk for having a baby with a chromosomal disorder. “But then I had the amino and everything was fine,” she said. In addition to age, obesity and medical conditions, such as diabetes and hypertension, also affect fertility and pregnancy, Keperling said. With age comes an increased risk of ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage, congenital abnormalities, placenta previa, gestational diabetes and need for a cesarean delivery, she said. “Even the fertility treatments don’t work as well with advanced maternal age,” Keperling said. “This is why even though in a younger population we quote that the average couple takes a year to get pregnant.” Physicians recommend a woman age 35 to 40 get a medical evaluation for risk factors at six months of unprotected intercourse and a woman older than 40 should see her doctor immediately, she said. “There are blood tests that can be done on day three of a cycle to access ovarian reserve,” she said. “It should be remembered that these risks are based on population studies and patients can always be exceptions. “We see many women that delay childbearing and then get very anxious when it doesn’t happen on their schedule,” Keperling said. “Then, at times, logistics of job and travel as well as ... stress makes this a tough time for these women.”

Waiting on baby

Mothers are older today than they were 20 years ago, according to a recent report from the Pew Research Center. The Social and Demographic Trends project compared U.S. mothers who gave birth in 1990 and in 2008. According to the report, mothers of newborns — in all race and ethnic groups — are older than their counterparts 20 years ago. Fourteen percent of births in 2008 were to women ages 35 and older, and 10 percent were to teens. This reversed the stats from 1990, when 13 percent of U.S. births were to teens, and 9 percent were to older women.

Hidden treasures Kids hide the darndest things in their pockets By KARA EBERLE for Smart

Sometimes, I forget to check pockets before tossing laundry into the washer. Thankfully, my husband, Mark, almost never leaves anything in his pockets (one of his best qualities). I’m less reliable and have been known to leave a tissue or two in a jacket pocket, which turns into a mess in the dryer. When it comes to our 5-year-old, Mara, I should check every crease and fold in every piece of clothing, because she loves to stash things everywhere. She also likes to wrap dolls in socks or put stuffed animals “to sleep” in a bed of towels and washcloths. I have found toy cars, hair ties, stickers, rocks, clover flowers, dandelions and Barbie shoes (usually not matching ones) in her pockets. I also have discovered other kids’ toys and made Mara return them. (We had long talks about not taking toys that aren’t hers.) My favorite find was a child-sized handful of mulch crammed into a fuzzy pink jacket pocket. To Mara, mulch isn’t chopped up pieces of wood and dirt. It can be cake mix or glitter or a cup of tea. I’m always amazed. ILLUSTRATIONS BY SAMANTHA K. DELLINGER for Smart

22 | smart

I found the mulch before putting the jacket in the washing machine, but I wasn’t quite as lucky when it came to the orange crayon that made its way from the washer to the dryer. When I opened the hot dryer door, it looked like there had been a massacre inside. The casualties were Mara’s Strawberry Shortcake sheets, one pink blanket and my baby boy’s silky blue blanket. (If you know how to get melted crayon out of cloth, please share!) We ran a contest asking other mothers to share the funniest things they’ve found in their kids’ pockets. Our top three picks won tickets to Dutch Wonderland. Here are their responses:

What’s Circulating in YOUR Air Ducts? Dust Mites Pollen Dust Pet Dander Dirt Debris

DUCT CLEANING Breathe Easy Again... “My daughters love to pick flowers, and my oldest loved to bring me flowers home from school. One day I was doing laundry, cleaning out her pockets, and she had both pockets full of flowers. I asked her why. She said she couldn’t pick just one that day for me so she filled her pockets!” — Krista Resto, Dover Township

“The funniest thing I found in my daughter Jennifer’s pocket were live lady bugs! I asked her why she had them. She said they were friends, looked to be lost and needed to stay warm! How in the world could I ever get mad! We very, very quickly released them into the garden! — Rosemarie Colville, New Freedom

“As the mom to four boys, I have encountered many things in the pockets of their clothes! But I must say the surprise I found in my third son Chandler’s pocket made doing the laundry an adventure that day! He was 3 years old at the time and loved digging in the dirt and also loved collecting things. That day, he had collected several earthworms and put them right in his pocket. As 3-year-olds do, he moved on to a new adventure and forgot about the worms in his pocket. I sadly found them in the bottom of the washer that night! We still laugh about this many years later! Chandler is now 15 years old, and I still check his pockets!”

These two didn’t win, but I thought they were cute, too: “Last year while on a beach vacation with my 5-year-old son Logan, his beach hat had developed a horrible smell. The hat had a small zipper pocket built into the side and after a few days I discovered the source of the smell: three slimy, dead sand clams, which he had stored in there as a souvenir. — Lisa Connolly, West Manchester Township “The funniest thing I found in a kid’s pocket was a chicken hot wing.” — Tina Powers, York

A mysterious ailment plagues children this time of year. As a mom, you probably know the symptoms: whining, repeated declarations of boredom, bickering with the nearest sibling. The diagnosis? Cabin fever! Debbie Stapf of Hanover sees cabin fever symptoms in her two daughters at home and in the first-graders she teaches at Shrewsbury Christian Academy. “I think it’s a combination of the cold weather and that kids have been in school for months and are looking forward to spring,” she said. According to Stapf, one of the best medicines for cabin fever is novelty. She

suggests keeping a stash of items hidden away: board games, craft supplies, word finds, activity books, coloring books – anything your kids haven’t seen before. You don’t have to spend a fortune, though, she said. “When you see things on sale at Walmart or Target, pick them up and save them in a box.” Encourage hands-on activities, like painting and molding, which allow kids to be creative and get more of their senses involved, Stapf said. “Anytime you get kids actively involved in doing something, it keeps them occupied.”

Crafts and recipes

Sarah Schmidt of Felton finds doing simple things with her two children can be the most fun. “We like board games, baking or even building a fort for the day,” she said. Schmidt and Stapf shared these fun craft and recipe ideas.

Trace a mitten pattern onto cardboard and cut it out to make a template. Trace the template onto construction paper making four for each child. Cut out mittens. Place two matching mittens together and use a hole punch to poke holes around the outside edge of the mittens. Allow children to decorate the mittens with crayons or markers. Start string by tying a knot in hole at cuff of each mitten. Allow children to lace the rest of the mitten, going up and down through the holes. Stuff each mitten with a few cotton balls. Use another string to connect the mittens and hang them up. For added fun, read the book “The Mitten” by Jan Brett.

Beat boredom with books!

No matter how old your kids are, reading aloud to them cures cabin fever, Stapf said. When she and her daughters visit the library, they check out books with a similar theme. For example, they chose Dr. Doolittle and a book on how to make clay animals. Having an activity to go along with the book helps kids get more involved in the story, she said. When reading the Little House books, Stapf and her girls tried activities characters in the book did, such as making butter and keeping a diary. “Focus on your child’s interests, whether it’s princesses or animals or whatever, and look for activities that go along with that,” she said.

Benefiting babies Beautiful Baby contest raises money and awareness for the March of Dimes.

And the winner is...

Lauren Marie Sweigart, born Sept. 18, 2009, of Newport won first place in the 2010 March of Dimes Beautiful Baby Contest. Lauren won a bedroom suite from Wolf Furniture, a child’s art kit and a basket filled with March of Dimes ducks, stickers and animals. The contest raised $6,065.86 for the March of Dimes, according to Kristen Campomizzi, community director for the March of Dimes. For details about March of Dimes, visit marchofdimes.com.

Three words are inscribed in a simple silver circle that hangs from Kathy Sweigart’s necklace. Believe in miracles. The ring hangs close to her heart, where she holds the memory of her first child, Sarah Marie, who died 50 days after being born at 24 weeks and five days. She weighed a mere 1 pound, 6 ounces. It reminds her of watching her 5-yearold son, Jacob,

develop during his stay in the neonatal intensive care unit after being born at 1 pound, 13 ounces. And Sweigart doesn’t take for granted the miracle that is her third child, Lauren Marie, who was born full-term with few problems. Since giving birth to two micropreemies, Sweigart has become involved with the March of Dimes, which works to help mothers have full-term pregnancies, researches the problems that threaten babies and raises awareness about premature births.

When she heard about the March of Dimes Beautiful Baby Contest this year, she entered Lauren to help raise money for the organization. She never imagined Lauren would win. Sweigart is proud of her baby girl, but she’s even happier that she helped raise money for an organization she cares about. “I’ve been helping out to promote prematurity awareness and to raise money to do research so they can get everyone to nine months.” As a learning support teacher at West Perry High School, Sweigart shares her stories about Sarah and Jacob with high school students to make them aware of the problems that can arise during pregnancy and child birth — and that they can happen to anyone. Sweigart, now 31, had no indication she would have problems when she became pregnant for the first time. “I was healthy,” she said. “Everything was fine.” And that’s why she is involved with the March of Dimes.

Your skin is your body’s largest organ, and can be exposed to many toxins and harsh elements, especially in the winter months. Indulge and nourish your partner’s skin with some products from Sunrise Soap Co. at 29 N. Beaver St. in York and also inside Eastern Market at 201 Memory Lane in Springettsbury Township. Its products are made locally in small batches with ingredients that are

good for your skin such as coconut, castor and olive oils, shea butter and cocoa butter. The soaps are great for any skin type and are made without petroleumbased chemicals or preservatives. For Valentine‘s Day it has heart-shaped soaps available, like those pictured above. Visit the Web site at sunrisesoapco.com or call 858-4549.

Dinner date Instead of going out for a fancy dinner date, treat your significant other to fine dining at home. A homemade meal is especially appreciated if the full-time family cook gets a night off. Buy local ingredients at a farmers’ market or grocery store. All of the farmers’ markets in our area sell seasonal and local produce. Dietz Produce sells all that and more at its stand in York’s Central Market. While it is not certified organic, it stopped using conventional pesticides in 2001. Visit it at localharvest.org/farms/M3920 or call 318-7082. Also try shopping at Allen’s Natural Foods at 350 S. Richland Ave. in York or Sonnewald Natural Foods at 4796 Lehman Road in Spring Grove for more organic products.

Single? Here’s how to mingle By JEN BAKER for Smart

Single? Looking to date someone? Finding that special person to make your heart flutter might be easier than you think. In today’s busy world, finding the time to get out and meet people can be difficult, but there are many options other than the bar scene or online dating sites. “You’ve got to put yourself out there and let people know this is who I am and this is what I’m looking for,” said Rebekah Sweeney of White Rose Matchmaker.

“Girls need to know it’s OK to ask a guy out. Just go for it.” Sweeney offers matchmaking and date coaching services to singles who are looking to share their life with someone. Her clients, both male and female, range in age from mid-30s to late 60s. “They need to know what they’re offering a relationship and why that person should go out with them,” Sweeney said. “It’s kind of like going on a date with a resume.” Breaking the ice with someone who

has caught your eye can be as simple as saying hello and asking how they are. Also commenting on a shared experience, such as waiting in a long line, can jump-start a conversation. Be confident, and don’t focus on one subject for too long. “Talk about the other person and keep the conversation rolling,” Sweeney advised. A fun and exciting way to meet potential partners is speed dating, which Story continues, page 40

provides the opportunity for several short dates in one evening in a safe, no-pressure environment. Sparks Speed Dating offers local events where singles can have up to 15 great dates in one night. Aliyah Johnson, president and CEO of Sparks Speed Dating, believes the biggest benefit of speed dating is that you get to meet the person face to face. “People can masquerade online, but you can’t hide in person,” Johnson said. “You get to interact, talk and see if you have that spark.” Teresa Mills of York contacted Sparks Speed Dating about organizing an event for singles in the York area. After trying online dating sites such as match.com and plentyoffish.com, Mills was interested in the idea of speed dating. “It’s a perfect scenario; the person is sitting right in front of you,” Mills said. “You can get to know someone via e-mail and phone, but it all boils down to chemistry. With speed dating, it’s five minutes. It’s painless. You can tell whether there is potential chemistry.” At Sparks Speed Dating events, nobody is allowed to ask for your last name or contact information during your initial conversation. Ice breaker topics are provided. After each mini date, attendees indicate on their date cards if they’d like to meet the person again. Sparks will provide contact information to attendees who have indicated an interest in each other so a second date can be arranged. “It takes away some of the fear of rejection,” Mills said. Johnson offers some great dating advice. “Make sure there is a mutual attraction and take it slow from there. Get to know each other.” Even if you’ve spent a lot of time dating the wrong people, it’s important to stick to what you want. “Focus on core values and what’s important to you, and you’ll learn a different relationship pattern,” Sweeney said. “The right relationship is out there.” Both men and women have a “checklist” of traits they would like in their ideal mate. It’s important to be flexible but not to settle when it comes to crucial areas of relationships. These are physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual and financial. “You don’t have to have everything in common; the best part of a relationship is exploring new things,” Sweeney said.

Mills added, “You have to be adventurous and do things together, but you also have to have your own life.” In addition to knowing what you offer a relationship, also know what you must have in your life to make you happy. “It’s about putting yourself out there and getting involved in the things you enjoy,” Sweeney said. “Find your happiness and the rest will come.”

Looking for love? While the Internet can be a great tool for making connections, there also can be a variety of places to meet people right in your own backyard: ■■ Accept invites to parties, weddings or social events. ■■ Host your own party, where each invitee brings a potluck dish and a single friend.

Primp struts its stuff Designers from near and far take on the catwalk for the York County Food Bank

By KARA EBERLE and SAMANTHA DELLINGER for Smart

Local models hit the runway at the Yorktowne Hotel in November to benefit the York County Food Bank. Primp the Runway was organized by Sha’ Summerlin, a longtime York resident and CEO of the Primp Agency. She organized the event to “put the food bank in the spotlight” and to bring a bit of high-fashion to downtown York. Because of the show, Summerlin was able to donate 24 bags filled with food to the York County Food Bank. For details on how to donate food this winter, visit yorkfoodbank.org.

We’ve all seen the ads and heard these funny shaped shoes can help you tone your legs and butt just by walking. If you haven’t heard about them yet, read about them at Skechers website www.skechers.com. Reebok has its own version of Shape-Ups called EasyTone. While I was interested in their benefits as well, I ended up choosing Skechers’ Mary Jane style, because I thought the design would work better with a variety of outfits. I do feel a little sore, but I haven’t noticed any changes yet. I will keep you posted!

GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR SHOES: • Walk up hills, and you will definitely feel a good stretch throughout your legs. • Walk fast, don’t run in them. • Tighten your abs and glutes when walking. • Try doing lunges and squats while wearing them. — Samantha Dellinger

They have a lot of cushion, which makes them very comfortable to stand and walk in for long periods of time. The extra cushioning and rounded bottoms are what engages you to use more muscles to balance yourself when you walk. These shoes might not be the final answer when it comes to significant weight loss, but I do believe they can help you tone up.

Moisturize dry hands this winter If you’re extremely sensitive to dry weather, you’re probably always on the lookout for good moisturizers. Neutrogena’s Deep Moisture Hand Cream works great on hands that take a beating in the cold. The subtle scents won’t give you headaches. The lotion is butter-cream-scented, but it’s not so sweet that it turns your stomach with every whiff. It absorbs quickly and doesn’t leave a greasy feeling.

Makeup finds at the Dollar store

I decided to check out the Dollar Tree for fun. I ended up finding some really great deals on makeup and not just the no-name brands either. 1. Two tubes of Sally Hansen lip gloss (both for $1.) The average cost for the lip gloss is $7.99 a tube. 2. Revlon matte eyeshadow ($1 each.) The average price for this eyeshadow is $4.99 3. L’Oreal On-the-Loose Shimmering powder. The average price for this eyeshadow is $4.99 4-7. I didn’t buy the makeup brushes pictured from the Dollar Tree. I have them shown to let you know what I used to apply my makeup.

Pet care without the car ride This vet makes house calls. By ROSE HAYES for Smart

Do you have any pets of your own? I have had many pets all my life. Currently, I have Pumpkin the cat; we lost our dog over the summer and are still recovering from her loss. What made you start a veterinary house-call business? York County has a definite need for a vet who will make house calls. On a personal level, I am very much enjoying connecting with people and their animals in their home environments. Had you worked out of a veterinary office prior to starting house calls? I have been a practicing vet for more than 11 years and practiced at Shiloh Veterinary Hospital and Old Trail Animal Hospital. What types of pets do you treat? Cats, dogs, ferrets, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, rats, mice, chinchillas, sheep, goats, pigs, llamas, alpacas, reptiles, amphibians, fish, birds, cattle, horses ...

What was your most memorable and/or unusual case so far? That has to be Ziggy, the 150-pound pot-bellied pig. I was called out to trim his overgrown hooves. He wasn’t the most cooperative patient, but with some patience and sedatives, I got the job done. It was a very rewarding treatment, because when I was finished, he could walk so much better! I also have to mention that the in-home euthanasias I have done, while incredibly sad for everyone, have made me realize how invaluable the house-call service is at that moment in a pet’s life. The experience is personal, peaceful and less stressful for everyone involved.

Are there any types of animals that you won’t treat? I am not really equipped to do a large farm practice, so the large animals listed here would be more from hobby farms or backyard pets. Do you handle emergency calls, or only visits scheduled in advance? I work by appointment. A true emergency, such as hit-by-car, uncontrolled bleeding, loss of consciousness, difficulty breathing, etc., is best handled by the emergency clinic (or a veterinary clinic during regular business hours) because this animal will need X-rays, intensive care, possibly surgery. I cannot do these things in the home. For illnesses that can be handled at home, or for a pet that is in imminent need of euthanasia, I make every attempt to work those visits into my schedule. What are the prices for house-call treatments? Is there an upfront fee for the house visit? I charge $35 for the house-call visit. Exam fees, vaccines, and other services are competitively priced with other area veterinary clinics, if not a bit cheaper. Payment is due at the time services are rendered. Will you treat multiple pets in one visit? If so, is there a discount for multiple pets? Yes, multiple pet appointments are welcome! There is a 10 percent discount on the entire bill. If neighbors within 1 mile of each other schedule back-to-back visits on the same day, then each neighbor gets a 50 percent discount on the house-call fee.
