QUINCY, Ill. – Thirteen-year-old Ryan Caldwell doesn’t have much experience with plants, but he’s convinced he has a green thumb. So is 12-year-old Taniya Hatchett. Both will get a chance to prove it thanks to a project that provided small flowerpots, seeds and gardening basics to young people involved with Teen Reach. It’s part of a larger effort bringing raised garden beds this summer to the community surrounding the Teen Reach headquarters, but “I wanted you to have your very own plant,” said Margie Williams with 5210 Let’s Go, an initiative led by the Adams County Health Department and United Way of Adams County. “I want you to learn how to care for and watch something grow.” See PLANT, Page 3R

Making that commitment takes work. “You’ve got to watch it and stuff, water it,” Taniya said as she added her name and designs to a flowerpot before planting zinnia seeds. But planting something – in this case zinnias, sunflowers or chives – also brings some rewards, including helping to inspire healthy living. The afternoon of planting continued a recent 5210 family night activity to reinforce the importance of healthy eating and active living every day by eating five servings of fruits and vegetables, no more than two hours of recreational screen time, one hour of physical activity and zero sugary drinks. “A lot of people don’t eat fruits and vegetables, but I believe if you grow it, you will eat it,” said Williams, a nurse educator for more than three decades focused on community health and experiential learning. That spurs community garden projects, but “the downside of community gardens outside is they’re only good un-

2 approaches to turning recycled materials into art Jennifer Forker ASSOCIATED PRESS

What have you not seen recycled into an art form? Everything from T-shirts to trash finds new life, as artists and crafters scramble to create something new out of something old. Here’s a look at two couples who have found interesting ways to turn recycling into art, and enjoy doing it together. Jennifer Wozniak and Mark Serwinowski of Denver, scour antique stores and record swaps for vinyl records and album covers, which they turn into purses in their garage. Wozniak had been developing ideas for making a beautiful purse that was sturdy and could hold a lot of stuff. “It’s been evolving, but when my husband figured out how to cut the vinyl, that’s when this really got going.” See RECYCLED, Page 4R

til it gets cold,” Williams said. Using an aeroponic tower garden, like the ones displayed at the family night, extends the growing season to year-round both indoors and out. “If you want to garden and can’t, a tower garden is great for people with disabilities, people who are older and great for parents and children,” Williams said. “The tower garden does go outside, but sometimes people just keep it inside. Lettuce can’t grow outside when it gets warm out, but this allows you to grow those kinds of greens all year.” Williams convinced some of the youngsters to taste from her garden. “They were not really excited about it,” she said. “We had to persuade some to try and eat lettuce.” There’s value, too, just in being around a garden – or a plant. “People love to see green things,” Williams said. Williams opted for easy-to-grow plants for a first-time effort for many of the kids. “What I love about zinnia is you can’t kill them. They seem to be very hardy,” she said. “If you want to try growing food, chives grow real well and don’t die easily.”

Serwinowski uses a small Dremel saw with a diamond blade. Toward the end of the project, he drills the holes through which Wozniak hammers decorative rivets that help hold the purses together. Wozniak recycles leather belts picked up at thrift stores into the purse handles, and uses album liner notes to line the insides. She recently started making mini purses with smaller 45s, or record singles, and she opened an Etsy online store, ShesARainbowCO. Otherwise, she sells her vinyl record purses in boutique shops and at summertime art markets. Avid recyclers who work in parallel fields – Wozniak works for Xcel Energy and Serwinowski is a sustainability consultant – the couple tries to toss as little waste as possible. “I have been passionate about recycling before recycling was the cool thing to do,” said Wozniak. “It makes me sad that a lot of people have this throwaway mentality, and it’s not a sustainable practice for our environment.”

Brad and Sundie Ruppert of Des Moines, Iowa, are longtime graphic designers who spent 15 years making folksy art pieces together before taking a turn toward fine art. They found their inspiration when, while installing a hand-crafted sign at the Greeley Hat Works shop in Greeley, Colorado, they stumbled on piles of thin felt strips trimmed from hand-built cowboy hats. The felt “wasn’t much to work with . literally, it was the outline of a circle 1inch wide,” said Sundie Ruppert. They took a pile of felt strips home, and Brad played with them in his workshop. He created a crow, then a feather, followed by a rooster. After the third sample, the couple knew they’d hit upon their own art form, and now they create a menagerie of mostly furry and feathered animals:

birds of all colors and sizes, farm animals, and wild creatures like foxes and bears. “Why do we do animals? I think it’s because the material itself is fur-like,” Sundie Ruppert said. They sell their work at art fairs and on their website, Vintage Sculpture. Sundie Ruppert designs the pieces and adds the details – eyes and beaks, for example, generally fashioned from metal – while Brad carves the wooden bases and builds up layers of colored felt to fashion the bird or beast. The limitations of the material sometimes prove liberating. “The tiny pieces of felt force us to figure out, ‘What in the world can you do with almost nothing?’” Sundie Ruppert said. “We don’t have a big sheet of something to cut a shape out of, which would be the easier and faster way to accomplish a piece of art. That drives our art.” The Rupperts work closely together on a project, but not side by side. They have separate workspaces, but consult with one another. “The fact that it goes back and forth between the two of us ... (a project) doesn’t seem to get stuck as often,” Sundie said.

Most housing is designed for nuclear families, but most U.S. households don’t meet that description. That’s why flexible floor plans – and innovations including movable walls, smart technology, multifunctional furniture and space-saving features – are the future, according to a new exhibit, “Making Room: Housing for a Changing America,” at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. The museum’s curator, Chrysanthe Broikos, says only about 20 percent of households today are nuclear families, so housing and zoning rules need to adapt to keep pace with demographic changes. In addition to interiors, the exhibit highlights a number of studies on housing, and information about what’s going on around the country in new development and zoning. “We’re trying to say ‘Hey, what are the other 80 percent of households doing?’ ” Broikos says. The exhibit features an “Open House” designed by Italian architect Pierluigi Colombo, co-founder of the design firm Clei, to show how a flexible space can adapt to accommodate three different living arrangements. Initially set up to house four imaginary roommates (two singles and a couple), the space was then transformed to house an imaginary multigenerational

family. At the end of May, the space will be reconfigured again to house an imaginary retired couple, and will include a rental apartment. The show, which opened Nov. 18, runs through Sept. 16. Although the Open House is only 1,000 square feet, it feels much larger – and allows for flexibility – because all the beds fold up to become walls, sofas or tables, and it features acoustically sound motorized moving wall systems made by the Wisconsin-based Hufcor company, long known for making the bigger moving walls used in gyms and ballrooms.

“A floor plan should not just be a picture in time. It should be adaptable,” says Lisa Blecker, marketing director at Resource Furniture, whose multifunctional furnishings are featured in the exhibit. “The big takeaway is that if you’re planning to renovate or reconfigure your home, it’s essential to think about the long term and opportunities for flexibility in years to come,” she says. “The makeup of a household is fluid, and, more than ever, home layouts, wall configurations and furnishings need to keep up with those changes.” The beauty of the home set up in the exhibit is that it can accommodate multiple household configurations without moving bathrooms or the kitchen. “And the kitchen has been carefully See SPACES, Page 7R

designed to work well for children, millennials, older people and someone in a wheelchair,” Blecker says. The kitchen in the exhibit features adjustable-height counters for wheelchair accessibility. Pull-down cabinet fittings, which al-

low high shelves to be pulled down to almost counter height, save people from having to stand on stools to reach upper shelves. Bathrooms are compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, and sinks are mounted separately from the vanity so a wheelchair can be accommodated without redoing the plumbing. “We will always need single-family homes and apartments that are designed to accommodate a nuclear fam-

ily,” says Sarah Watson, deputy director of the Citizens Housing & Planning Council, which helped organize the exhibit. “But today, the majority of our households are comprised of singles living alone, multigenerational families and adults sharing their homes with roommates. Our population is also aging rapidly and will need new housing options that can support aging-in-place with diminished physical or cognitive abilities.” 4/28/18

Dan Soliman, director of the AARP Foundation, a major funder of the exhibit, says that one-fifth of U.S. adults will be 65 or older by 2030, “and a recent AARP study found that almost 90 percent of people want to continue living in their own home for as long as possible.” “We need more designs like this one to meet the needs of individuals and families through all stages of their life,” he says.
